A Holy Day of Obligation

Friday, December 7th 6:00 p.m. English Vigil 7:30 p.m. Spanish Vigil

8:30 a.m.—Latin 12:00 p.m.—English

Last week I mentioned the Parish Catalyst Project, and a model for understand-ing Parish Life, in terms of the known traits of "dynamic disciples" in "great parish-es" and in the context of Paul VI's "Cycle of Evangelization" (Evangelii Nuntiandi, 20-27 [1975]), by which he described the whole existence and purpose of the Church in a single perspective. Here's a diagram that illustrates what I was talking about, and which I've mentioned in somewhat abbreviated fashion in recent homilies. It bears studying. As you look at your life, can you see where you've been "invited" (e.g., by parents, perhaps at infant baptism) to "gather" regularly in the parish community, for various experiences (social, instructional, service, worship, etc.), by which you would "grow" in getting the big picture clear and entire? and identify where you "came to believe" in a way that began shaping your life, more completely? and sense where you took on the whole meaning of Baptism and Confirmation as the pattern of your life, and wanted to live your identity as a "child of God and member of the Body of Christ," not just as a passive bystander but as an agent, a first-string player on Team Christ? and do you have a heart for inviting others to taste and see the gift that you have received? If so, you are getting a sense of the ever repeated "cycle of evangeli-zation" in your own life. What is God moving you to be and do, now, and tomorrow, and for the rest of your life?

Laudato Si #48 The human environment and the natural environment deteriorate together; we cannot adequately combat environmental degradation unless we attend to causes related to human and social degradation. In fact, the deterioration of the environment and of society affects the most vulnerable people on the planet; "Both everyday experience and scientific research show that the gravest effects of all attacks on the environment are suffered by the poorest."

Shepherds Field Olive Wood Handcraft—On November 17-18 a group from the Holy Land (Bethlehem & Jerusalem) will be selling religious articles after masses to support the Catholic Christian minorities in Beth-lehem. As a tradition, many of the Catholic families in the Holy Land work in small workshops to produce religious articles from olive wood. These articles represent the Christian art of the Holy Land. In the past,

they used to sell their artwork to pilgrims who visit the Holy Land. However, these days they are facing an economic hardship as very few tourists visit the Holy Land due to security issues. Many of the Catholic families immigrated and left the Holy Land. The percentage of Christians in the Holy Land has dropped to less than 1%. Sales will be used to help and support the Catholics in the Holy Land and to encourage them not to immigrate.

• St. Vincent de Paul Food Collection is the third Sunday of each month, Nov. 17-18, 2018. St. Vincent de Paul is accepting non-perishable food donations. Please take food donations directly to the white St. Vincent de Paul Van in the parking lot.
