2013 marks the 50th anniversary of our building.

The ‘new’ Playhouse, designed by Peter Moro, is one of the landmark designs of 1960s modernist architecture, and now an icon in the city.

To celebrate this significant milestone in the life of the building, and the variety and quality of work it has allowed us to offer audiences over five decades, we will be presenting a number of special events throughout the year. A highlight will be a gala performance of the pantomime in December 2013, 50 years to the day that the company presented extracts from Shakespeare’s Coriolanus on the new stage.

Roundabout, the Playhouse’s acclaimed theatre-in-education company, is 40 years old in spring 2013.

Founded in 1973 under the direction of Sue Birtwhistle, Roundabout’s remit was to create theatre-in-education productions for schools in Nottinghamshire. In the last 40 years we’ve expanded our reach and now perform our work regionally, nationally and internationally – but the majority of our performances still take place in local schools. We celebrate our anniversary with a production that reflects our aim throughout four decades: to create a programme of world-class work that is relevant, accessible and inclusive for all children and young people.

We are delighted to announce that, to celebrate Roundabout’s 40th birthday, we are planning a new tour of White Peacock, our vibrant play for young people aged 11+ with profound and multiple learning disabilities and autism. White Peacock, written and directed by Gill Brigg, offers a unique experience rich in action, colour, sound, touch and emotion. It is performed inside a specially-constructed micro theatre for just six young people and their companions and features live music, singing, digital projection and Makaton signing. There will be a national tour in late spring 2013, after which the play returns to Nottingham for residencies in schools and family performances at the Playhouse.

Tell us a bit about what you do…I look after our membership scheme Backstage Pass – surely one of the best deals in British theatre!

What do you enjoy most about your job?I love meeting our members and sharing an extra glimpse of upcoming shows with them.

What is the best thing you’ve seen or experienced at the Playhouse?A whole menagerie of highlights: tap-dancing penguins; a luminous hound and a white peacock; a shrew tamed and a goldfish electrocuted. Not all in the same show of course.

What are you most looking forward to in the Spring 2013 Season?I Was a Rat! I really enjoyed reading the novel with my daughter and it sounds like the adaptation will be brimming with stagecraft and invention.

What’s the most unusual thing you have been asked to do in your job?Last season I found myself interpreting for a French dance troupe at the post-show discussion: quelle horreur! I have also run around the streets of Nottingham dressed as an Ugly Sister on behalf of the Playhouse, but then that was voluntary.
