SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Choice

"If you choose you can keep the commandments," Sirach tells us. God "has set before you fire and water; to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand" (Sirach 15:15-16). This is a great mystery: God does not control us so completely that we cannot choose our own path. We have certain boundaries, of course, but no one but we can choose our way within those boundaries.

In today's reading from Matthew's Gospel, Jesus reminds us of our freedom and our responsibility for our lives. He calls us to look beyond the words of the commandments, all the way to their meaning. Look beyond the adultery to the selfishness that poisons our love. Look beyond the murder to the anger that eats away at our compassion. Look beyond the perjured testimony to the lies and deception that drive our behavior.

Our vocation is to choose life for ourselves, and to choose a path through our part of the world that helps make life possible and more abundant for others as well.

“A disciple is a learner. He is constantly in a learning and maturing process. The goal of that process is change toward faith and Christlikeness. One of the factors involved in bringing about this kind of change and maturity in an individual is through the

experiences of the Christian life and the Christian faith. This experience happens in small groups, where struggles, victories, pains, and recoveries are shared. Another factor for bringing

about spiritual transformation is Bible study. Scripture grounds believers in their faith and provides a lamp for their feet and a

light for their path (Psalm 119:105).” - Michael C. Mack in www.smallgroups.com

PARISH LENTEN RETREAT: Got questions for God? God has questions for you!

February 27 & 28, 2017 Monday and Tuesday evening at 7:30pm

Throughout the four Gospels Jesus asks well over 100 questions. During our retreat, we’ll explore how these life-changing questions can help move us toward the goal of personal discipleship. And beyond that, how Jesus’

questions can help transform us as a parish to be missionaries in action to bring about the Kingdom of God. Join us as our retreat leader, A W (author, international speaker, Academic Dean for Evangelization, Adjunct Professor), leads us deeper into our encounter with Jesus through reflecting on some of His questions from the gospels.

Dr. Wright will speak at all of our weekend Masses, February 25 & 26, 2017.

YOU’VE GOT MAIL!

As part of our renewed parish vision and mission, you will receive this week an important mailing from Father Paddy about who we are as a parish, where we are going, and how we can all be a part of it. Please take some time to read the materials enclosed and prayerfully reflect on the gifts you have to share. Next weekend as a family of faith we will unite in our commitment to fulfill our parish mission! If you have any questions regarding the mailing, contact Cristina Folan at [email protected] or Fr. Paddy at [email protected].

Please note! If you do not receive the mailing this week, there will be materials available for you in our Gathering Space. Please also contact our parish office at 973-538-1358, ext. 100 as it is likely that we do not have your family officially registered as parishioners of Notre Dame.

5 STEPS TO BECOMING AN INTENTIONAL DISCIPLE

Part 5of 5 in a series from an excerpt by Mark Shea, OSV Newsweekly

In her book Forming Intentional Disciples, Sherry Weddell outlines five stages of spiritual growth that typify the experience of conversion (becoming an intentional disciple). In the past few weeks we shared Step 1: Initial Trust; Step 2: Spiritual Curiosity; Step 3: Spiritual Openness; Step 4: Spiritual Curiosity. Please visit back issues of our bulletin on our website to reference back to these steps.

Step 5: Intentional Discipleship: This is the decision to “drop one’s nets,” to make a conscious commitment to follow Jesus in the midst of his Church as an obedient disciple and to re-order one’s life accordingly. It is the single most important decision a person can possibly make (which is why Jesus calls us to count the cost). But it is the goal of the Christian life — all Christian lives, not just converts. It can be as dramatic as St. Paul getting knocked off his horse or as unseen as a quiet resolve arrived at during a sleepy Sunday morning Mass. But however we arrive at it, that resolve to follow Jesus consciously and intentionally with our whole heart, soul, mind and strength is what the whole of the Christian call to discipleship is all about. Once made, that decision will henceforth be the controlling decision that will drive and coordinate everything — absolutely everything — in the life of the disciple of Jesus Christ and, as Paul says, “destroy arguments and every pretension raising itself against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive in obedience to Christ” (2 Cor 10:5). Here begins the New Life.

These five stages of growth in discipleship are not a law. It is not inevitable that one will pass through all five stages in neat succession, nor that one will pass through all the stages, nor that one will not regress or waffle between them, nor that one will not precociously leapfrog from trust to spiritual openness to intentional discipleship via some dramatic intuition or gift of the Holy Spirit. And, as many people sadly demonstrate, it is not a given that somebody will even reach the initial stage of trust due to factors ranging from personal trauma to the terrible witness a Christian may give to Christ.

HELP PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES - SUPPORT THE MURRAY HOUSE DINNER DANCE!

Please help support the Department for Persons with Disabilities (DPD), a Catholic Charities Agency, as they host their 47th Annual Murray House Dinner Dance at the Brownstone in Paterson. The Gala will be held on Sunday, February 19 at 6pm. For more information visit: www.dpd.org/Murray or contact DPD’s Development Office at 973-406-1104 or at [email protected].

We received this email message over the weekend:

“In thinking about our mission to reach out, I tried doing so on Facebook in our local mom’s group. I let them know what a great faith community we have and that parents who have been having a hard time going to church because it's hard with young kids have support here. I let them know about Shepherd's Call and Religious Ed. (Name omitted) contacted me almost immediately. Her family is new to the area. She was interested to learn more about the Pre-K Religious Ed and the church in general. I offered to connect her to you. I hope that's okay- I figured it might be the most efficient way to plug her into relevant programs and the church in general.”

PARISHIONER CAELA PROVOST ANNOUNCES HER NEW BOOK!

Parishioner Caela Provost recently published a young adult novel, Someone Else's Shoes, available on Amazon. After participating in our Guatemala Outreach mission last year, she felt compelled to use her gift of writing not only to entertain a young adult audience, but also to give back to a mission close to her heart. From now until August 1st, 2017, Caela will donate half of her book proceeds to our Notre Dame “Guatemala Outreach” mission trip this August.

“Set in Vermont, Someone Else's Shoes tells the story of a young girl, Vera Walker, navigating the normal ups-and-downs of high school life...with a twist; on her 16th birthday, she discovers she is a telepath and learns that with the perks of her new powers comes an avalanche of troubles. Focusing on themes of friendship, loyalty, and courage, Someone Else's Shoes gives readers two protagonists (female and male) who are flawed, funny, brave, and intelligent...quite simply, it's a coming of age story with a fantastic/sci-fi twist.”

For more information search on Amazon for Someone Else’s Shoes or reach out to Caela at [email protected].
