2 French Missionaries in Oceania

1. Niel Gunson, Messengers of Grace: Evangelical Missionaries in the South Seas, 1797-1860 (Oxford, 1978).

2. Ralph M. Wiltgen, The Founding of the Roman Catholic Church in Oceania, 1825 to 1850 (Canberra, 1979). Wiltgen's comprehensive book provides useful information on almost all the subjects covered in this chapter, so I have not made further references to his work in the notes. Similarly, Hugh Laracy, Marists and Melanesians (Canberra, 1976), is a thorough treatment of the Marists in the Solomon Islands; the first two sections cover many of the same questions as the following account.

3. J. B. Piolet (ed.), Les Missions catholiques franr;aises au XIXe siecle (Paris, 1902), remains the best overall account; volume 4 provides a survey of missionary activities in Oceania, organised by island groups.

4. Information from Paul Hodee, Tahiti, 1834-1984 (Papeete, 1984). See also Piolet and the summary by Patrick O'Reilly, Le Tahiti catholique (Paris, 1969).

12. L. M. Raucaz, Vingt-cinq anm!es d'apostolat aux lies Salomon meridionales (1898-1923) (Lyon, 1925) and A. Monfat, Dix annees en Melanesie (Lyon, 1891); both accounts have also been used by Laracy.

missions 50 (1928), pp. 161-98. See also Edmund Campion, Australian Catholics (Sydney, 1987).

Annales (hereafter referred to as the AMSM) are compilations of letters and reports, almost always without notes or commentary; they should be considered, therefore, as primary sources. Pagination and volume numbering is erratic. A microfilm copy is available in the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris.

contradictions (Paris, 1978), pp. 127-59. 25. Subsequent commentators have advanced varying interpretations of

1878. Roselene Dousset-Leenhardt, who has done the most extensive research on the insurrection (and who brought the Trentinian report to light), sets the rebellion in the context of settler spoliation of Melanesian land and aggression against the islanders which culminated in the 1870s and sees the rebellion as inevitable. Alain Saussol and Jean Guiart concur in seeing the actions of 1878 as a large-scale uprising against European colonisation of New Caledonia. Apollinaire AnovaAtaba, a Melanesian priest and author of D'Atai a l'independance (Noumea, 1984), regards the insurrection as one episode - the major one up to the time of his writing in the 1960s - in continued Melanesian resistance against the French; Anova-Ataba underlines the importance of 1878 in developing Melanesian nationalism. The independantiste activists of recent years have also seen in Atai a political and ideological ancestor and have made him a symbol of their struggle. Other writers, however, have emphasised the particular circumstances in which the rebellion took place and stressed the internecine struggle in the Melanesian population; Linda Latham, in particular, looks at the systems of alliances and the 'hasty settling of old feuds' among the various tribes for which the affair provided the occasion in La Revolte de 1878 (Noumea, 1978). She also points out that much of the fighting was

done by the Melanesians and argues that the repression was 'slow' and says that the Melanesian death total was closer to 400 than 1200.
