Northwood News Thursday 11 May 2017 Volume 16 From the Headmaster MR P L McAVOY A school environment is never boring. It’s the human factor that makes it so…and it’s the perfect preparation for life beyond your school years. It teaches you (ironically) that people are inherently good, and want each other to succeed. When we became aware of the pest control issue in Bruyns House on Friday afternoon last week, the scale of what needed to be done, swiftly at that, was daunting. The Health Department had recommended that, despite the small number of bed bugs found (in two dorms out of the twenty-plus rooms), the best approach was to treat the entire facility. Enter the Northwood parent community. Within 24 hours of putting out an appeal to parents to assist with hosting of boarders, every single boy was accommodated, with spare capacity! On behalf of the Bruyns House boys, I wish to thank everyone who has opened up their homes to these young men. Your generosity and willingness to help has been magnificent to witness. As an aside, it occurred to me that this will also provide an opportunity for the parents of some of our day scholars to gain insight into the typical Bruyns House boy. We trust they have made a favourable impression! We are hurtling towards a number of important events in the coming weeks…most critically of course the June examinations. It is so easy to think that this is far away, but in reality the full session starts four weeks on Monday. Only two timetable cycles left! That can be as few as six lessons in a particular subject in the junior grades. Also, with the Paper 3 Language exams taking time out of the day on 19 and 26 May, alongside the Life Orientation exam on 2 June…the clock is ticking fast. Please assist your sons in drawing up and sticking to a study timetable, whilst maintaining his commitments to in-class academics and extra- murals of course. Many thanks to those who have offered to host a Parktown boy on the night of Friday 19 May. This is reciprocity for our annual trip to Johannesburg, and helps us greatly in maintaining our out-of-province relationships. A further reminder that Saturday 20 May is a compulsory attendance event for all boys. Times for this will be communicated next week. From the Head of Extramurals Mr G. Le Roux [email protected] Deputy Headmaster – Extramurals

We have just over one week left before Parktown Boys make their way down to Northwood. The parent response has been good so far but we are still a fair number of beds away from being able to fully host all their boys. Please, we ask that you make your home available for Friday 19 May and assist us with the hosting of these learners. Please fill in the link below if you have not done so already. https://goo.gl/forms/hpPOVZ66xtk9JbSA3

Tennis On Saturday 06 April the 1st Team played Ashton College Ballito at Ballito. The match was of excellent standard and played in sportsman-like spirit. Unfortunately half of our 1st Team players were unavailable due to other sports demands. Nevertheless Ashton fielded a very good team and beat Northwood 6 - 3. All credit goes to Ashton for their fine performance. Well done to the Northwood Boys for their good performance, determination, and sportsmanlike conduct.
