INTRODUCTION

This species checklist is intended as a guide to assist you in identifying, and keeping a record of, major animal and bird species you were fortunate to see during your visit to Botswana.

The checklist is not intended to be a substitute for a comprehensive field guide but as an introduction to the variety of species of wildlife - mammals, reptiles and birds - you might encounter.

Major species you are more likely to observe are presented with representative photographs for easier identification. English/common, scientific and Setswana names for such species are provided along with a brief observation on the species and a space for you to record notes about your sightings. Minor species that are less usually sighted are listed along with their scientific names.

Pages are provided at the back of the checklist for additional travel notes or unusual sightings.

The checklist follows a standard taxonomic order as listed in The Kingdon Field Guide to African Mammals and Robert’s Bird Guide to Southern Africa modified as required for the purposes of presentation and formatting.

Distinctive plumage of adults unlike other species. Juveniles have scruffy brown and white plumage. Dark eyes distinguish juveniles from Osprey.

Large eagle with plumage varying from dark rufous brown to more common light brown. Fully feathered legs and yellowish eyes.
