That's it
for now. Remember Just Keep Carving,
CHIPS FROM THE PREZ
We were invited by Diana Noble-Gulliford of the Historical Soci-ety of Federal Way to participate in a week-end at the Barker Cabin Park on Hylabos Creek. Ken Davis and Richard Mazza joined me on Saturday May 8th, and Loyd Case and Richard Mazza were with me on Sun-day May 9th. We had a lot of fun and did a lot of carving. Richard sold Flutes and fan Birds and I sold a little Duck We gave out about 200 fliers over
the two days. Dale Goebel made the trip down to Adna, Wa on May 22nd to
the spring meeting of the Northwest Chap-ter of IWCS. He can tell us about it at the
next meeting. There are three events this June, Northwest Carvers Picnic June 12, Spo-kane Carvers Assn. Rendezvous June 11-13, and Tri-Cities Woodcarving Assn. Rendezvous June 10-13. Check Coming Events for informa-tion. If you are going to one of the rendez-vous take some fliers with you. You can get them from me, just let me know a few days ahead of time, so I can
print them up.

I can hardly believe that it is May already which means it’s time to get the RVs ready for service (if everyone can find the $$s for gas) Guess we need to get reservations in for places close to home--as much as I dislike res-ervations. You plan for a fun weekend and then it rains. Boo Hiss. Right now I’d better get back to the business at hand here. We received some new images for our visi-tor gallery so I also went to look at his website at Underwood Wildlife Studio. William Un-derwood has some great carvings here. There are some terrific examples of colorings that might help you. I’ve posted 3 works on our site www.woodcarvers.org/woodcarverpage1.htm a n d h i s w e b s i t e i s a t www.underwoodwildlifestudio.com/index.htm. There are several galleries. You will also want to take a look at the work of Gary McDaniel at 3 Crosses Wood-carving. He has two videos on YouTube about carving eyes. He has several nice galleries at his blog spot and he also has some free pat-terns on Picasa, one of which I’ve used in this newsletter as your pattern for the month. If you watch the first video you will see how to click on the second one. The Video is at h t t p : / / w w w . y o u t u b e . c o m / w a t c h ?v=9aHfhquZe5Y&feature=related Gary’s web-site is at http://gator1037.hostgator.com/~garymc/carving-galleries/ The free patterns are at http://picasaweb.google.com/gmgarymc/WoodcarvingPatterns# After you look at the video on carving eyes you’ll see there are other carving videos there too. If you need another project to carve, Will Hayden has a link to carving some little carica-tures at http://picasaweb.google.com/w i l l h a y d e n 3 3 / 2 T o 4 I n c h C A R V I N G S ?feat=email#5457245255879474018 (Can you believe these long URLS?) There are 9 images here for this project. There will be a week-long West Coast Na-tive American carving class taught by Rick
Page 2 2010 Issue
Wolcott at the Lodge at Weirs Beach which is about 20 minutes north of Victoria BC. The class will be held July 4-10. For Information contact Rick at 403.241.5316 or [email protected] or go to the website to see the Lodge at http://www.thelodgeatweirsbeach.com. Have you thought that chain saw carving is unique to the United States? Well then, travel to the German website of Holgar Bär and take a look at his bears, eagles, owls, and totem poles. Or to the site of Klaus Soostmeyer. Don’t ask me why a German is carving totem poles. For the same reason they like country-western music I guess. If you “hier klicken” (click) on the pic-tures you can get the larger image. Bär also does some interpretive sculptures. A second German chainsaw carver is Klaus Soostmeyer who has nine galleries of his work. Here are these two websites: http://www.baerart.de/ http://www.chainsaw-artist.de/ Before going to press with this I’ll let you know that I just added 3 more carving pictures that just arrived from St. Petersburg, Russia by Fedor Ballakh. He would also like to connect with some carvers if you are in the mood to go international with your e-mail. Once again our international gallery is at www.woodcarvers.org/woodcarverpage1.htm Speaking of being international, one of our carvers was contacted by an old friend who is liv-ing in Saudi Arabia whom she hadn’t heard of for years. The friend happened to see her name on our club information page. We do get around………. That’s all for now. Happy surfing. See you next month. Send me your favorite urls.

Minutes Gen. Mtg. May 14
We were happy to see several guests and a couple of returning members at the meet-ing. We hope they will continue to come
and share in the fun. Dale Goebel gave the status of our fi-nances. He reports $ in our general account, $ in the small savings account, and $ in the Edward Jones account. To-night we collected $57 for the raffle, $1.25 in name tag fines, and
$8.55 for coffee. Loyd Case says the Summit Library carv-ing class/group have developed an interest in Chip Carving – if you’ve ever wanted to give it a try or if you have some expertise to share, this is a great opportunity.. dates, times, etc are in this
newsletter. John Merchant re-ports that the Wood-turner’s group will have a program on inlay. Thursday 5/20 at 7:00 pm at the Fife Community Center on 54th – guests are very welcome. It promises to be a very interest-ing presentation by
Russell Hatch. SHOW AND TELL: Brian Hogan showed us an adorable in-the- round Unicorn. Bill Orvis brought quite a
The meeting was called to order by President Bob Hark-ness at 6:50 pm follow-
ing the potluck dinner. Instead of a meeting in June, we will have our picnic on June 12th at North Lake Park. Re-member to bring your wood burner to join Paul Langston’s project and a carving knife to learn how Richard La Plant makes those cute
little skunks. Our new sew-on patches have been or-dered and we hope to have them available for
$5 each at the picnic. Plans are on sched-ule for the annual show in November. The banquet/auction will be at Charlie’s in Puyallup on November 13th and is sure to be a great evening. This year there are 6 choices of meal, all under $23. (even includes des-sert). The banquet/auction is for every-one… yes, including YOU. Details will be in the prospectus for the show (when it comes
out). PROGRAM: There are many kinds of wil-low trees; 6-8 of those types form “diamond” shapes in the bark. Richard Mazza knows just how to bring out those diamonds and turn that piece of
wood into a beautiful walking stick, candle holder, or centerpiece. Making a variety of items allows you to use every bit of the wood which is very strong but not hard to carve. In the rough, with the bark on, you can’t tell much about how the wood will look but Richard quickly re-moved the bark be-tween the diamonds with a sharpened lino-leum knife. Once the whitewood was re-vealed you could begin to see the possibilities of the finished piece. A horseshoe cleaning knife works well to clean up the inside of the dia-monds. Richard’s “V” tool defines the shape of each diamond, his palm gouge shapes be-tween. By removing enough of the white wood using only palm gouges he reveals the darker heartwood be-low. Occasionally he uses the natural fea-tures of the wood to add a face, figure or other bit of whimsy. It was a pleasure to watch the process of turning a plain looking stick into a beautiful and functional piece. Bonus Tip: a crepe eraser designed to clean sandpaper makes a du-rable non-skid foot for
a cane.

Richard Mazza brought an inlaid red cedar flute (#38), an Alaskan white cedar flute (#39) and a beau-tiful Hunters Mahog-any flute which he presented as a gift to Bob Harkness in ap-preciation of all Bob does. Bob Harkness completed the show and tell with his fre-q u e n t l y p a i n t e d Buffle-head Drake. Looks like you got it
