MOVING OUT OF HARM’S WAY by Tony Onellion

The most memorable movie scene from my childhood is the one from “The Wizard of Oz”, when a tornado is approaching Dorothy’s home in Kansas. Even with the advanced filmmaking technologies since that movie, filmed more than 75 years ago, no tornado scene has ever had the visceral impact of that one. Strong fans, great audio wind effects, classic contrasts in black and white…it terrorizes until Dorothy is knocked out by a flying window while in her bedroom and begins the dream sequence which leads to the major portion of the film. It is, to me, the greatest scene in the movie, which creates a visual explosion with the sudden appearance of color once Dorothy opens the door to walk into Oz, but not the entire personal effect or impact created in the previous storm scene. It is timeless and unparalleled in the craft of filmmaking.

So, then, did I look forward to my move to Edmond, Oklahoma in June of 1979. Our company had purchased a radio station there, with its tower located just south in the city limits of Oklahoma City, thus making it de facto an Oklahoma City FM radio station, incredibly underpriced because of that situation. The station did okay for a while but circumstances led me to sign on with another local broadcast company later that year, a decision which eventually led to my moving to the Northshore in the early 1980’s.

What I looked forward to as much as the promotion to General Sales Manager and general manager-in-waiting was the market. I had been wanting to be a part of the fraternity of storm chasers who began their existence in Norman, the university city just 15 miles south of Edmond on the other side of Oklahoma City. While in Shreveport before my move to Oklahoma, I had a chance to interview Dr. Fujita, the University of Chicago doctor whose study of tornadoes had earned him the honor of having their intensity named after him. The F-scale, or Fujita scale, rates tornadoes generally from an F-1 to an F-5, with an F-5 being catastrophic. His stories about the properties of tornadoes were fascinating and his only regret is that he had never seen an actual tornado. All his research was done from studies of created tornadoes in his laboratories.

The storm chasers of that era were ill-prepared to follow the meanderings of the typical super cell that produces most tornadoes. The University of Oklahoma had just begun its first organized chase program in 1978 and there were few viable chasers. The most visible weather person in the Oklahoma City area was, and is today, Gary England, the Channel 9 meteorologist who used the first Doppler radar to predict tornadoes on the air and with his folksy approach, warned residents in his viewing area “to move their flower pots from the south side of their houses to the north side” as a possible F-1 twister made its way towards El Reno, Okarche or Midwest City. You might remember Gary from the movie “Twister”, when Gary played himself during all the televised portions of that exciting tornado movie.

With my work schedule, I found little time to formally storm chase. Back then, it wasn’t the well-organized, well-publicized, day-after-day activity that it became in the 1990’s. Mostof my efforts were like Bill Paxton’s character in 1996’s “Twister”… I looked at the sky, sniffed the air, and tried to figure out where a bad storm might come down. In my nearly three years in Oklahoma, I never saw a tornado. One tried to form just north of my home in Edmond but sloughed off any real efforts to gain sufficient rotation. The skies many times took on the green and/or yellow of an impending twister, but no luck. Luck. I was lucky. Look at this same area of central Oklahoma this week. Hail, torrential rains, flooding, drownings…and no way to see an approaching funnel cloud. Since the turn of the century, the Oklahoma City/Norman/Moore areas have been tormented with at least four F-5 tornadoes with deaths in the hundreds and property damage in the billions of dollars. Our home in Edmond had a “fraidy hole”, a place where the faint of heart could go when the winds picked up and they became afraid. Ours was a reinforced master bedroom closet with a concrete ceiling, concrete walls and a solid wood exterior door. Today, about 40% of the homes in Moore have their own “fraidy holes” - reinforced below ground cellars or similar shelters in garages or nearby outbuildings. There’s nothing wrong with being a “fraidy cat” when a monstrous black funnel cloud with straight and circular winds exceeding 150 miles per hour and the ability to suck all oxygen out of the immediate area, suffocating and collapsing everything in its path, approaches you. The storms from the past 15 years have been, as a group, the most severe and debilitating acts of nature in this confined geographical area of central Oklahoma that this country has ever seen. No hurricane creates the instant terror of a twister and a hurricane gives you time to leave.

Be careful what you wish for. I wished mightily for a chance to chase a tornado back in my salad days. It might have chased me into eternity if I had succeeded. Today, I still would like to see a tornado, but from the west or northwest, miles away, one that has passed without doing any harm except to fascinate. We have a small risk of tornadoes here in southeast Louisiana. Let’s thank our lucky stars.

Welcome To Dogs On DeploymentYou help can our serving military! Visit: http://dogsondeployment.org

Military members nation-wide confront a multitude of problems during their careers, the last thing they need to worry about is their pet’s care during their service commitments. Dogs On Deployment is a 501(c)(3) national non-profit which provides an online network for service members to search for volunteers who are willing to board their pets during their owner’s service commitments. Dogs on Deployment promotes responsible, life-long pet ownership by military pet owners by advocating for military pet owner rights, providing educational resources and granting financial assistance for military pet owners during times of emergency. Join Dogs on Deployment’s mission in changing the lives of our military members and their pets.Dogs on Deployment aids pets of all types that belong to active duty, reservists, guard, honorably discharged veterans and their families. Our Goals• DoD aims at having DoD Boarders located near all major military bases in the United States. A military member should be able to find a DoD Boarder located within 50 miles, no matter what base they are stationed at or deploying from.• DoD will become a first resource for military members to turn to when they need long term boarding for their pets. This includes, but is not limited to, being recommended by military assistance organizations, base family support centers and animal shelters impacted by relinquished pets.• DoD plans to increase the rights and education that pet owners have while serving active duty in the military. This includes bringing light to the problem of pet relinquishment by military members to higher levels of the chain of command, and petitioning for annual, military-wide pet responsibility training. We want pets to be considered part of the family by military regulations, not disposable objects.• DoD will help promote the military-pet community by providing a database of partnered pet related businesses which support their troops through discount and incentive programs. Users will be able to search for local businesses which will provide them with affordable options for pet care.• DoD wants to help qualified military members with the cost of pet care during emergencies, and/or before and during deployments in order to promote responsible pet-ownership, providing financial assistance to get military pets spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and help with cost of pet care. This is known as our Pet Chit Program.

Words to GROW by!GOOD POLLINATION ESSENTIAL FOR MANY

GARDEN VEGETABLESMost gardeners hope that home-grown vegetables come off the vine perfect in every way. That’s why most people have a vegetable garden. They not only want produce fresher than they can find in the supermarket, but they also enjoy picking it at the peak of perfection.Perfect fruit starts with good pollination and growing conditions. Conversely, poor pollination is often the reason for misshapen fruit or no fruit set at all. Some plants, like sweet corn, are wind-pollinated. The wind carries the pollen from the tassel to the silks. Each silk must receive a pollen grain for the kernel to fill. To achieve a good ear of corn, plant in blocky patches rather than in single rows. With this configuration, pollen from neighboring plants can help the pollination process.Vine crops such as cucumbers, watermelons, squash and others are pollinated by insects. For fruit development, the insects must transfer pollen from male to female flowers. If the insects are not present, or it there is only one gender of flower present, generally you won’t get satisfactory fruit set. Insecticides can be disastrous to setting vine-crop fruit if applied during the morning or peak of the day while the flowers are wide open. Pesticides should be used late in the afternoon after bee activity has slowed. This way bees are not killed by freshly laid chemicals that fall inside the flowers. The third category of plants are pollinated by a system that uses both insects and wind. A slight breeze or disturbance by an insect on a complete flower (both genders in each) shakes pollen onto the female flower part and causes pollination.Such environmental condition as rain, cold, wind or hot and dry weather also will create problems with flower development or pollen activity and pollination. Some diseases attack flowers and block pollination. These are more of concern in greenhouses or damp areas. Sometimes it is what gardeners’ do that creates barriers to nature at work. Crowded plantings, high or low extremes of fertilization and inconsistent sources of water also can lead to unsatisfactory fruiting.

CARPENTER BEES ACTIVE AROUNDUNPAINTED WOOD

Many homeowners who have unpainted furniture, decking, fences or camp structures are finding small piles of sawdust these days, a sign that carpenter bees may be at work. These bees drill a neat three-quarter-inch hole in the bottom of the larger pieces of wood, a hole that will go in about 1 ½ inches, then turn at a right angle for 8 to 10 or more inches. This is how the carpenter bee makes its nest.Once the home is completed, the female begins collecting pollen which she rollsinto a ball, then lays an egg in it. She then seals off the 1-ich cell and repeats the process until the tunnel is full.Larvae that hatch form the eggs feed on the pollen to maturity, pupate, then emerge as adults. The last egg laid is the first to mature and emerge as an adult. Then the process begins again. Many people confuse the carpenter bee and the bumble bee. The carpenter bee has a black abdomen and a black and yellow thorax. The bumble bee has black and yellow on both parts of its body. The carpenter bee is not as aggressive as the bumble bee, and the only time you will get stung is if you grab or catch one in your hand. Bumble bees are much more aggressive and string viciously if disturbed. Carpenter bees will dive at you, but seldom sting. To control a population of carpenter bees, apply Sevin to the affected area. The holes in the wood should be filled, then the area treated with the insecticide that is brushed or sprayed. If a spray is used, mix 2 to 3 ounces of the material per gallon water. If the holes are reopened, treat the area again.

NURSE NEW PLANTINGS THROUGH FIRST SUMMERHome gardeners who have made major plantings in the landscape, such as trees and shrubs, should be mindful that the first summer of growth is often the most critical to survival for such greenery. Plants which make it through the first six months from spring to the cooler months of fall will usually survive in fine fashion, but extra care must be provided during this critical period.Newly-planted trees and shrubs, as well as some ground covers, do not have root systems developed sufficiently during the first few months after transplanting to vigorously support the upper portion of the plant. One critical moisture stress in the spring or summer could lead to an early demise for such a plant.Begin the spring with a good mulch around all new plantings. Spreads six to eight inch cover of pine straw, leaves, bagasse or other organic matter under a new plant. A good mulch reduces soil temperature, prevents sudden changes in soil temperature, and most important, it will conserve moisture in the soil. A mulch will also reduce competition for soil nutrients from weeds. Since Louisiana often experiences some high winds, large trees should be staked in some fashion to keep them upright and to prevent much movement. More trees are lost by winds loosening the trunk of a tree from its roots than by any other manner.Very little fertilizer is needed for a new plant during its first year. If a gardener has provided a good planting bed with good top soil, organic matter and sand, plants should be able to make it for several months on their own. However, a light application of fertilizer in mid-summer should prove beneficial. For further information contact Alan Vaughn, County Agent, Plaquemines/St. Bernard Parish 504-433-3664 or 504-278-4234. SHINGLESWhat is Shingles?

Shingles is an illness that is caused by the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays in the body in an inactive state. For reasons that are not fully known, the virus can reactivate years later, causing shingles.Shingles is also known as zoster or herpes zoster. It is not caused by the same virus that causes genital herpes, a sexually transmitted disease. Almost one out of every three people in the United States will develop shingles. Although children can get shingles, the risk of disease increases as a person gets older. About half of all cases occur among men and women 60 years old or older. Half of persons living until age 85 years will develop shingles.People who have medical conditions that keep their immune systems from working properly, such as certain cancers, HIV and those who receive immunosuppressive drugs, such as steroids and drugs given after organ transplantation, are also at greater risk of getting shingles.

Symptoms of ShinglesShingles usually starts as a painful rash on one side of the face or body. The rash forms blisters that typically scab over in seven to ten days and then clears up within two to four weeks. Before the rash develops, there is often pain, itching, or tingling in the area where the rash will develop. This may happen anywhere from one to five days before the rash appears. Most commonly, the rash occurs in a single stripe around either the left or the right side of the body. In other cases, the rash occurs on one side of the face. In rare cases (usually among people with weakened immune systems), the rash may be more widespread and look similar to a chickenpox rash. Shingles can affect the eye and cause loss of vision. Other symptoms of shingles can include fever, headache, chills or an upset stomach.

ComplicationsThe most common complication of shingles is a condition called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). People with PHN have severe pain in the areas where they had the shingles rash, even after the rash clears up. The pain from PHN may be severe and debilitating, but it usually resolves in a few weeks or months in most patients. PHN can, however, persists for many years in some persons. As people get older, they are more likely to develop PHN, and the pain is more likely to be severe. PHN occurs rarely among people under 40 years of age but can occur in up to half of untreated people who are 60 years of age and older. Shingles may lead to serious complications involving the eye. Very rarely, shingles can also lead to pneumonia, hearing problems, blindness, brain inflammation or death.

Laboratory TestingThe diagnostic tests used to confirm shingles are the same as those to confirm chickenpox. Skin lesions are the preferred specimen, but scabs are also useful. Treatment of Shingles Several antiviral medicines - acyclovir, valacyclovir and famciclovir - are available to treat shingles. These medicines will help shorten the length and severity of the illness. But to be effective, they must be started as soon as possible after the rash appears. People who have or think they mighthave shingles should call their healthcare provider as soon as possible to discuss treatment options. Pain medicine may help relieve the pain caused by shingles. Wet compresses, calamine lotion, and colloidal oatmeal baths may help relieve some of the itching.

Is Shingles Infectious?Shingles cannot be passed from one person to another. However, the virus that causes shingles, the varicella zoster virus, can be spread from a person with active shingles to a person who has never had chickenpox. In such cases, the person exposed to the virus might develop chickenpox, but they would not develop shingles. Keep the rash covered. If the lesions are well covered the person will not transmit the infection. The virus is spread through direct contact with fluid from the rash blisters, not through sneezing, coughing or casual contact. A person with shingles can spread the virus when the rash is in the blister-phase. A person is not infectious before blisters appear. Once the rash has developed crusts, the person is no longer contagious.Shingles is less contagious than chickenpox and the risk of a person with shingles spreading the virus is low if the rash is covered. If the lesions are well covered the person will not transmit the infection.

If you have shingles:- Keep the rash covered.- Do not touch or scratch the rash.- Wash your hands often to prevent the spread of varicella zoster virus.- Until your rash has developed crusts, avoid contact with:- Pregnant women who have never had chickenpox or the varicella vaccine- Premature or low birth weight infants- Those with cancer, especially leukemia and lymphoma or undergoing chemo-therapy.- Other immunocompromised persons (such as persons receiving immunosuppressive medications, organ transplant recipients, and people with HIV infection).

What can I do to reduce my risk of having shingles? The only way to reduce the risk of developing shingles and the long-term pain that can follow shingles is to get vaccinated. A vaccine for shingles is licensed for persons aged 60 years and older. People who develop shingles typically have only one episode in their lifetime. In rare cases, however, a person can have a second or even a third episode.

Reader Advisory: The National Trade Association

we belong to has purchased the above classifieds.

Determining the value of their service or product

is advised by this publication. In order to avoid

misunderstandings, some advertisers do not offer

employment but rather supply the readers with

manuals, directories and other materials designed

to help their clients establish mail order selling and

other businesses at home. Under NO circumstance

should you send any money in advance or give

the client your checking, license ID, or credit card

numbers. Also beware of ads that claim to guarantee

loans regardless of credit and note that if a credit

repair company does business only over the phone

it is illegal to request any money before delivering

its service. All funds are based in US dollars. Toll free

numbers may or may not reach Canada.IMPORTANT

TO NOTE: Copy (phone numbers, addresses, phone

extensions, web site addresses, etc.) often changes

from week to week. Please review the comment

in the left-hand column to note any ads that have

changed. If so please make sure that you update

the copy in your system. A reminder—the rebate

program requires that all ads in the audit period be

run correctly. Also, if you cannot or do not run any

of the ads below, please let us know in writing by

faxing a copy back to us at: 781-459-7770 indicating

which ads were not run and the reasons for not

running them. All explanations are subject to rebate

approval by the executive director. Thank you.

What can I do now to prepare for the unexpected for my pets or my

older family members?

In the confusion that accompanies a person’s unexpected illness, accident, or death, pets may be overlooked. In some cases, pets are discovered in the person’s home days after the tragedy. To prevent this from happening to your pet, take these simple precautions: Find at least two responsible friends or relatives who agree to serve as temporary emergency caregivers in the event that something unexpected happens to you. Provide them with keys to your home; feeding and care instructions; the name of your veterinarian; and information about the permanent care provisions you have made for your pet. Make sure your neighbors, friends, and relatives know how many pets you have and the names and contact numbers of the individuals who have agreed to serve as emergency caregivers. Emergency caregivers should also know how to contact each other.

Adults over the age of 65 are turning their healthcare focus into something much better rounded. Blending several healthy life aspects together such as fitness, spirituality, meditation, entertainment, travel and clean living, has resulted in a shift to healthier senior adults.

Most seniors are unaware that they are a unique group of people.
