Cronk wat net na 07:00 die Donderdagoggend op die karkas afgekom het, sê dat die renoster aanvanklik in die bors geskiet is waarna sy horing en helfte van sy gesig met ‘n panga uitgekap is. “Dit is iets wat ek nooit weer in my lewe wil sien nie.“

“Dinsdagmiddag was die laaste keer dat ons al vyf renosters naby die huis gesien het. Ons het hulle elke middag gevoer sodat ons hulle kon tel. Toe hulle nie Woensdagaand nader kom nie het ons gaan ondersoek instel. Ons het op twee renosterkoeie afgekom wat gewond was. Aanvanklik het ons gedink dat hulle baklei het, dit het egter te donker geraak en ons kon nie verder soek nie. “Donderdagoggend het ons op die karkas van die bulletjie afgekom en toe eers besef dat stropers op die koeie ook geskiet en drie van hulle gewond het.

Uit die ondersoek wil dit voorkom of twee stropers met ‘n kleinerige kaliber

geweer op die renosters geskiet het. “Dit lyk vir ons of hulle nie regtig

geweet het wat hulle doen nie. Woensdag was donkermaan en stropers slaan gewoonlik toe as dit volmaan is. Miskien het hulle gewag vir die reën wat hulle voetspore sou wegwas.”

Die saak word tans ondersoek en Cronk wil graag die department van

Natuurbewaring bedank vir die vinnige uitreik van permitte om die oorblywende renosters van die plaas te verwyder.

LEPHALALE - Numsa vowed to close Medupi down should Eskom not respond to a memorandum of grievances marching workers handed to Eskom Representatives who participated in a protest march last Friday. Jerry Morulane, Regional Secretary of Numsa said Eskom had seven days to respond to their demands.

On Friday around 1500 Medupi workers and members of Numsa marched from Onverwacht to Thabo Mbeki Street where the deputy general Secretary of Numsa, Karl Cloete handed over the memorandum to Eskom representatives.

Rumours abounded this week that shots were fired during the march, but according to Lephalale police and Vetus Schola Security the march was peaceful. Several workers however reverted to stone throwing in Marapong prior to the march where an estimated 2500 workers gathered to ‘hijack’ busses on route to Medupi to transport them to the Mogol club.

According to Stephen Nhlapo, Numsa Sector Coordinator, frustrated Numsa members started stoning busses and vehicles when it became clear that bus operators halted all bus services. “We expected around 10 000 Medupi workers to join the march, but transport became a big problem. We had security guards pulling people from busses to prevent them from joining the march, a legal march at that.”

Warrant Officer, Frans Mokoena confirmed to Northern News on Friday that the march was legal, but that Numsa members were prevented from gathering at the Eskom building in town. They were re-directed to Thabo Mbeki Street opposite Shoprite.

Vetus Schola, General Manager, Marthinus Byleveldt told Northern News this week that the Company categorically denies the allegations by Nhlapo, saying that the company has and always will act within the framework of its mandate with its clients and within the context of the law, and that security guards were deployed in Marapong to prevent workers from hi-jacking busses. “Numsa failed to organize transport for the march and illegally tried to re-direct busses originally contracted to transport workers to Medupi.”

Vetus Schola’s contract to be terminated immediately, following complaints from workers that the company employs “Congolese mercenaries” who traumatize and intimidate workers.

Byleveldt also denied these allegations, explaining that Vetus Schola was not engaged to infringe on employee rights but

was only contracted to deal with violence and violent strike action and is also involved when sites are demobilised. “We have a strike force with specialised security personnel who are deployed when there is any form of strike action with a mandate to protect lives and property.”

In response to the threats Eskom commented this week by saying that “Eskom has noted the issues raised in the memorandum and will engage with trade unions and contractors to address these issues. Eskom will respond within the period requested by Numsa.”

Pippie Kruger was hierdie week vir die eerste keer sedert die ongeluk, Oujaarsaand weer op haar ouers se plaas net buite Lephalale.

Anice vertel dat dit vir Pippie baie spesiaal is om haar boetie Arno om haar te hê. Arno (1) woon sedert die ongeluk by Anice se ma en Anice en Pippie kry maar min van hom te sien.

Pippie is onlangs uit die rehabilitasiesentrum ontslaan en bly nou voltyds saam met Anice in ‘n woonstel in Johannesburg. Daar kry sy drie dae per week terapie om haar te help praat en loop.

Anice vertel dat Lephalale baie verander het sedert hulle hier weg is, en dat die vars plaas lug hulle albei hierdie week baie goed gedoen het. Een van die eerste plekke waar hulle besoek afgelê het was by Dr Herman Minnaar, “my hero” soos Anice hom noem.

Minnaar het die aand van die ongeluk die familie bygestaan en gehelp om dokters by die Garden City Hospitaal in Brixton te oorreed om Pippie op te neem ten spyte van die feit dat dokters haar ‘n 10% kans tot oorlewing gegee het.

MOKOPANE - Local politicians scrambled to the aid of a family that lost most of their earthly possessions in a fire last week.

The Maluleke family’s house in RDP extension 19 was set alight when it was struck by lightning last Tuesday.

Fortunate Maluleke, a grade 11 student at Gojela High School was sleeping in the room next door to the room where the fire started. He is unharmed but were treated for smoke inhalation.

Unfortunately all the children’s school books, clothes and stationary were destroyed in the blaze, as well as all their bedding and blankets.

DA councillor Beyers Smit jump to action and immediately made arrangements with the school principal to have Fortunate’s books and stationary replaced so that he could continue with his exams.

“With my visit to the family I discovered that none of the RDP houses have lightning earthing to prevent such disasters from happening,” said Smit. “We as the DA want answers on this matter and will submit written questions to the relevant authorities.”

Northern News contacted Mogalakwnea municipal manager, William Kekana, for comment but he was not available at the time of going to print.

‘n Nuwe grondhervormingsplan is Maandagaand deur President Jacob Zuma in Pretoria aangekondig. Zuma het by ‘n jaarsvergadering van die African Farmers’ Association of South Africa (Afasa) gesê voedselsekuriteit is hoog op die regering se agenda en dat Suid-Afrikaners moet terugkeer na die ‘grond’ om te verseker dat daar altyd voedsel sal wees.

Die voorgestelde plan is distriksgebaseer, waar elke distrik ‘n grondhervormingskomitee moet stig om 20% van die kommersiële grond in daardie distrik te identifiseer vir oordrag aan swart boere. Kommersiële boere sal die geleentheid gegun word om aandeel te hê in die hervormingsproses deur fisies by die stelsel in te koop.

Die vyfstapplan lui soos volg:Eerstens sal grond wat reeds in die

mark is, of waar ‘n boer in ‘n finansiële verknorsing is, of waar ‘n grondeienaar grond besit, maar nie fisies daar boer nie, of wat in ‘n boedel beskryf is geïdentifiseer word.

Tweedens sal die staat grond teen 50% van die markwaarde aankoop en dan geleentheid bied vir kontant bydraes van komersiële boere in die omgewing, wat vrywillig sal bydra om die verliese op te maak.

Kommersiële boere wat wel ‘n bydra maak sal beskerm word van grondonteiening omdat hulle deur hulle bydra swart ekonomies bemagtigingstatus sal verkry.

Vierdens sal die Tesourie, die Landbank en gevestigde wit boere saamwerk om finansiering daar te stel. Die moontlikheid

om verbande vir ‘n tydperk van 40 jaar te registreer word ook ondersoek.

In die vyfde plek sal die regering meer belê in landbounavorsing en -ontwikkeling

In reaksie op die grondhervormingsvoorstel meen Agri-SA dat daar meriete in elemente van dié voorstel is, maar dat dit te kort skiet om billikheid teenoor alle partye te verseker.

Waarmee Agri SA saamstem is dat plaaslike komitees getaak kan word om grondhervormingsbehoeftes per distrik te bepaal. ‘n Meer omvattende finansieringsbystandpakket vir begunstigdes is ook onontbeerlik.

Maar Johannes Möller, president van Agri SA meen dat hoewel dié voorstel poog om die koste van grondhervorming oor ‘n breër basis te versprei, dit nie billik en regverdig is om die las van grondhervorming, wat in openbare belang gedoen moet word, tot ‘n groot mate op die finansiële bydraes van mede grondeienaars in ‘n distrik aangewese te maak nie.

“Die fiskus beskik oor die vermoë en behoort sy volle bydrae in dié verband te lewer, soos wat die Grondwet bepaal. Dit grens aan afdreiging om sodanige addisionele bydraes van grondeienaars te verlang in ruil vir sekerheid van grondbesit en die verwerwing van swart ekonomiese bemagtiging status. Dit laat ook buite rekening of ‘n mede-grondeienaar die finansiële vermoë het om sodanige finansiële bydrae te lewer of nie. Dit kan vir talle medium tot kleiner boerderye ‘n onhaalbare proposisie wees en derhalwe hul toekoms in onsekerheid dompel,” sê Möller.

TLU-SA se Assistant Hoofbestuurder, Henk van den Graaf sê die unie is bekommerd dat boere selfs minder as 50% van die markwaarde sal kry.

“Die regering se groenskrif vir grondhervorming dui daarop dat ‘n waardeerder generaal aangestel sal word om die waarde van grond te bepaal. Dié persoon sal ‘n staatsamptenaar wees wat sonder twyfel die waarde van grond sodoende sal manupileer om die regering te bevoordeel.

“‘n Boer wat dus sy grond aan die staat verkoop sal slegs 50% van ‘n reeds verlaagte prys kry. Eintlik kom dit neer op onteiening of selfs nasionalisering.”

Hy meen ook dat die belofte van swart ekonomies bemagtigings status as afpersing bestempel kan word.

Volgens van den Graaf het 95-97% van alle grondhervormingsprojekte misluk en is die grond nou onproduktief. “Daar is wel swart boere wat uiters suksesvol is, dit is egter boere wat self op die vryemark grond gekoop het, so ‘n persoon wil immers boer. As die regering aanhou om grond vir sogenaamde swart boere te gee wat nie werklik wil boer nie gaan voedselsekuriteit ‘n groot probleem in ons land word.”

Hy meen ook dat die skuldlas in landbou jaarliks vergroot terwyl die winsmarge verklein. “Hoekom moet boere wat reeds finansieël swaar trek verantwoordlik gehou word as die staat nie sy verpligtinge en beloftes nakom nie.”

TLU stel ook voor dat die staat so gou as moontlik ‘n omvattende grondoudit doen.

“Daar is baie staatsgrond wat tans nie in gebruik is nie. Ek dink bevoorbeeld aan die weermagbasis in Walmansthal wat in ongebruik verval het. Hier is baie goeie landbougrond wat aangewend kan word.”

Intussen het President Jacob Zuma reaksie op sy voorstelle verwelkom.

Nie baie mense weet wie is Bennie Venter nie – totdat jy verduidelik

dis die ou met die rekkie in sy baard. “O ou Bennie,” sê hulle dan en wil sommer dadelik weet watter kleur gaan sy hare by hierdie jaar se Brille, Pille en Wielewfees wees. “Pers. Nee Turqoise, sê Bennie terwyl hy met Noordelike Nuus gesels oor sy betrokkenheid by die fees.

Dit het begin toe vier bikers een middag by die ou Orinoco Hotel in Mokopane begin gesels het oor hoe bevoorreg hulle is om daar te kan sit en ‘n drankie geniet terwyl baie mense nie eens die basiese lewensnoodsaaklikhede kan bekostig nie, wat nog te sê ‘n koue bier.

“Ons het sommer daar en dan besluit om vir Mariaan van Tonder by die ouetehuis te gaan sien en te hoor wat hulle nodig het en hoe ons kan help,” vertel Bennie Venter, een van die vier.

“Daai tyd was daar ‘n behoefte aan sagte kombersies en sagte speelgoed om vas te hou vir die bejaardes in die tehuis se Kosmos afdeling. Dit is die spesiale sorg afdeling waar mense wat voltydse verpleging nodig het woon,” sê hy.

“Ons het al die motorfietsryers wat ons in die hande kon kry geskakel en ‘n uitstappie na die ouetehuis gereël waar elke ryer ‘n kombersie of sagte dingetjie of twee geskenk het.”

Uit die sukses van hierdie uitstappie het dit duidelik geraak dat motorfietsryers ‘n groot rol kan speel in die versorging van die dorp se oumense. Bennie en Mariaan het koppe bymekaar gesit en gesels oor ‘n gereelde langtermyn samewerkingsinisiatief.

Daar is besluit dat die tehuis se volgende basaar met ‘n biker saamtrek gekombineer sal word en so is die Brille, Pille en Wielefees sewe jaar terug gebore. Die eerste jaar was daar 75 motorfietse en het die fees ‘n obrengs van R38 000 gelewer. Verlede jaar is daar ‘n rekord R103 000 ingesamel.

Hierdie fondse is broodnodig en help die tehuis om staande te bly ten spyte van staatsbydraes wat elke jaar minder word.

“Baie van ons inwoners kan nie eens hul verblyfskoste hier betaal nie, om nie eens te praat van medikasie, doeke en etes nie,” vertel Mariaan wat aan die stuur van die tehuis staan.

“As dit nie vir die fondse was wat ons insamel met die Brille, Pille en Wielefees nie, sou ons baie van die dorp se armste bejaardes eenvoudig moes wegwys,” het sy na afloop van verlede jaar se fees aan Noordelike Nuus gesê.

'n Sagte plek vir goue oues

Bennie sê hy is bietjie bekommerd oor die huidige ekonomiese situasie. Ander soortgelyke projekte waarby hy betrokke is se inkomste het hierdie jaar so effe afgeneem, verduidelik hy.

“Maar die Brille en Pille is nie sommer enige biker saamtrek nie, en hierdie jaar het ons vir Flooze hier.”

Bennie en Sorina of dan ‘Flooze’ is nie vreemdelinge vir mekaar nie. Hulle het al dikwels die mikrofoon gedeel by motorfiets saamtreke waar hy as serimoniemeester optree terwyl sy ‘n blaaskans vat.

Tussen die twee van hulle gaan hulle volgende Saterdag sorg dat die verwagte 300 bikers hierdie jaar tuis voel en die dag saam met die dorp en sy bejaardes geniet.

Om 11:00 vertrek die motorfietsryers op ‘n massa-rit deur die dorp en dan sluit die bejaardes in rolstoele op die roete by hulle aan. Daarna word bejaardes op pretritte geneem deur die dorp, terwyl die wat agterbly deur ‘n waaghals op ‘n motorfiets vermaak word.

Die prysuitdeling vind om 13:00 plaas. Die dag sluit ook in heerlike kosstalletjies, gebak en naaldwerk, teetuin en taverne – meestal deur senior burgers self beman. Ontbytkaartjies is beskikbaar by die tehuis in Hoogestraat 60 teen R50 per persoon.

Drie Limpopo swem-mers het 20 Okto-ber aan die Sun City ope-water kompetisie deelgeneem. Al drie die swemmers het binne die kwali-fiserende tyd geswem vir die SA ope-water kampioenskappe! Hulle gaan dan ook eerskomende naweek deelneem aan die Ebotse Rynfield-Myl in Benoni, Johannesburg, waar hul elkeen die 3000m (3km) afstand weer sal aanpak.

Laerskool Krugerpark se tennisspelers het verlede Donderdag aan ‘n tennis- rondtomtalie teen mekaar gespeel. Altesaam 20 spelers het in twee groepe teen mekaar te staan gekom. In Groep een was JD Vorster eerste, Hansie Engelbrecht tweede, Schalk Boltman derde, Nicki Oosthuizen en Zirk Mostert vierde en Tiaan Strüwig vyfde. Die Bossie-onnies het verlede Dinsdag “Baas-dag” saam met hul hoof, Louwtjie Pretorius gevier. Om hul medelye met sy beseerde been te betoon, het die personeel ook elkeen 'n verband om hul linkerbeen gedraai. Die “baas” is verras met 'n geskenk en 'n tradisionele boerewors-braai. Die aanvanklike planne om mnr. Pretorius te trakteer op 'n potjie gholf is in die wiele gery deur 'n ontydige aksie-krieket besering! Nietemin, “Baas-dag” is behoor-lik gevier deur Laerskool Bosveld Primary se personeel.

Hoërskool Piet Potgieter se hoofleiers vir 2013 is verlede Woensdagaand tydens die skool se Lourier prysuitdeling aangekondig. Van links is die onderhoofseun - JC Minnaar, Onderhoofdogter - Simoné van Wyk, Hoofdogter – Iné Vorster en Hoofseun Christo Grové. Die Dux leerlinge vir die jaar is Bennie Brönn en Esther-Marie Malan. Lenice van Eyk is aangewys as sportdogter vir 2012, Theunis Botha en Zeldri Nel, Kultuurseun en dogter vir 2012 en Beyers Barwise is aangewys as Beste Leerlingraadslid.

Dit is die Gr 9 leerders van die Sedibeng gekombineerde skool in Lephalale se laaste jaar by die skool aangesien leerders hul matriek deur ‘n tegniese kollege verwerf. Die feit dat die groep van 12 nooit ‘n matriekafskeid sal kan meemaak nie het hulle ouers aangespoor om vir hulle so ‘n geleentheid te reel. Met ‘n rekord opkoms van belangstellendes en muurbalspelers het Mogol Muurbal Saterdag aan World Squash Day deelgeneem, ‘n inisiatief om bewustheid van die sport te skep in die hoop dat dit dan teen 2020 deel te kry van die Olimpiese Spele.

Voorlopige uitslae dui daarop dat Mogol Muurbal en ander klubs regoor die wêreld dit reggekry het om die grootste sport wedstryd in die geskiedenis aan te bied.

Klubs is opgedeel in twee spanne: Team

Squash en Team 2020. As twee spelers gespeel het was een speler in Team Squash en die ander in Team 2020. Alle klubs regoor die wêreld wat deelgeneem het het hulle uitslae na afloop van die verrigtinge ingestuur na WorldSquashDay en al die punte is opgetel.

Mogol klub het dit reggekry om 16 wedstryde te speel. By Mogol het Team Squash 11 van die 16 wedstryde gewen en Team 2020, 5. So dit lyk of Squash op die ou einde gewen het!

NOTICE OF INTERUPTION OF NORMAL SUPPLY OF WATER.

Business people and community members residing at Lephalale town, Onverwacht and Marapong township are hereby notified about 24 hours interruption of Water supply to their households and business-es, scheduled to commence at midnight of Friday 26 October 2012 at 24h00 and continue until evening of Saturday 27 October 2012 at 24h00.

This interruption is due to the fact that Mokolo pipeline will be shut down to make tie-inns for future connection of the de-bottlenecking section. This interruption will have an impact on the ability of water service providers to provide uninterrupted service. This municipality regrets any inconvenience that may be caused by this arrangement and will make sure that all our reservoirs are full on Friday before the lock-out. Members of community and business people are requested to make some contingency plans and use water sparingly. The mu-nicipality will try by all means to supply consumers with portable water where and when the need arise.

Although terms of the specification for this project indicate continuous shutdown of 24 hours, members of community are warned that the interruption may take a bit longer given activities that will be taking place; meaning the shutdown may extend to Sunday 28th October 2012. The municipality hereby requests community members to save water, avoid activities that consume a lot of water like washing cars and watering gardens and lawns during the week end of 27-28 Octo-ber 2012.

In die ses jaar wat hy dwelms gebruik het, het sy paaie met ten minste 21 plaaslike dealers gekruis. So vertel Pieter* ‘n 24-jarige inwoner van Lephalale wat op 18 begin Cat gebruik het.

“Jy kan alle soorte dwelms hier op amper elke hoek en draai kry, jy moet net weet waarvoor om te kyk. Parkeertereine van winkelsentrums en motorhawens is maar van die plekke waar deals daagliks gemaak word. Ek onthou dat ek eendag agter ‘n polisieman by ‘n stopstraat gestop het, die dealer het oop en bloot na my motor gestap vir my die pakkie gegee en die R200 by my gevat sonder dat die polisieman iets agterkom. R200 se Cat was genoeg om my ‘n dag te hou, die volgende dag was ek weer op straat opsoek na my volgende fix.”

Hier waar Pieter saam met sy ma in sy ouerhuis sit is hy nie skaam om te vertel hoe sy lewe die afgelope ses jaar gelyk het nie. Dit is familieverhoudinge wat die ergste skade gelei het en dit is veral sy ma wat vasbeslote is om ander ouers te waarsku oor die groeiende probleem. “Ek wil graag hê dat ouers in Lephalale moet weet dat dwelms hier orals beskikbaar is en dat baie tieners reeds in hierdie strik getrap het. Dit is so belangrik dat ouers ten alle tye weet waar hulle kinders is en om nie sommer net geld in hulle hande te stop nie,” vertel sy en ‘n mens kan sien dat die saak haar baie na aan die hart lê.

Pieter erken dat hy groot bedrae geld by sy eie ouers gesteel het en selfs hulle goed verkoop het om ‘n fix te kry.

“Jy wil ophou want jy weet jy is fisies besig om dood te gaan, maar jy kan nie, want die ontrekking is te erg. Jongmense wat dink hulle wil dit net eenkeer gebruik om te voel hoe dit voel is naïef. Ek was na die eerste probeerslag totaal gehook. Ek kon dit vir baie lank vir my familie wegsteek – hulle het gedink ek gaan maar deur ‘n fase. Die sere op my lyf, die dae lank niks eet of slaap nie, die swart kringe onder my oë, my persoonlikheid wat totaal verander het - het hulle raakgesien, maar nooit gedink dat dit dwelms is nie. Ek het in ‘n stabiele liefdevolle huis groot geword, maar toe ek met verkeerde vriende deurmekaar raak en uit nuuskierigheid wel die Cat probeer wat vir my aangebied is, het my lewe ‘n verkeerde koers ingeslaan.

Vier maande gelede het Pieter ‘n Naltrexone pil in sy lyf laat inplant.

Dorpe is vrot van die dwelmsDie revolusionêre maar ook omstrede medikasie blokeer reseptors in die brein en onderdruk sodoende smagtinge (cravings). Dit veroorsaak ook dat die dwelms geen effek op die ligaam het nie. “Jy word glad nie hoog nie, ek wou dit op die proef stel en het dwelms gebruik nadat die pil ingeplant is, maar ek het besef dat ek my geld gemors het, want ek het niks gevoel nie. Ek smag ook nie meer na die dwelms nie.”

Hy vertel dat hy soveel keer self probeer ophou het, maar nooit daarin kon slaag nie. “Die dag toe my pa uitgevind het dat ek dwelms gebruik, het ek hom belowe dat ek sou ophou, maar ek kon nie. Met Naltrexone en met die ondersteuning van my familie is dit nou moontlik. Dinge is nog nie 100% soos wat dit voor die dwelms was nie, ek kry woede uitbarstings en my vehouding met my familie het baie skade gelei, maar ten minste is ek van die dwelms af.”

Navorsing toon dat sowat 50% van dwelmverslaafdes wat Naltrexone gebruik nie weer terug val nie. Dit is egter belangrik dat hulle berading ontvang om die rehabilitasie proses te versterk.

Daar is ook digene wat waarsku dat die middel baie gevaarlik is aangesien pasiente wat steeds aanhou dwelms gebruik saam met die Naltrexone hulself kan oordoseer. Die gevaar bestaan ook dat sodra die medikasie na drie maande uitgewerk het en die persoon dan terug gaan op dwelms sy ligaam nie meer gewoond is aan dieselfde hoeveelhede nie. So ‘n persoon kan dan maklik oordosseer.

Neltrexone veroorsaak ook versnelde onttrekking dit is dus gevaarlik om dit in te plant indien daar nog dwelmmiddels in die liggaam is.

Dr GF Kirsten wat die implantings in Pretoria doen meen self dat Naltrexone net beskou moet word as ‘n eerste stap, ‘n hupstoot as te ware maar dat rehabilitasie ‘n lewenslange proses is.

Pieter moet nog twee maal inplantings kry aangesien die Naltrexone na drie maande uitwerk. “Na ‘n jaar behoort ek heeltemal skoon te wees. Ek is dankbaar dat ek my lewe terug het en nog meer dankbaar vir my familie en God wat hierdie baie moeilike pad elke dag saam met my stap. Sonder hulle sou dit nie moontlik wees nie.”

Texas-rigged plastic worms are the most versatile lures you can find. They can be fished throughout the year, and around any type of structure or cover. Plastics will catch bass when fishing is tough and even more bass when the bite is on. Learn to Texas-rig and you WILL catch more bass more often!

Worms are great to fish with when bass are related to timber or other heavy cover, or when bass are concentrated in an area such as grass beds, submerged brushpiles, bridge pilings, points or any other kind of structure.

Rigging & ColourTo Texas-rig a worm you slide a bullet-shaped weight

up the line before you attach the hook. When fishing heavy cover or pitching, it is advisable to peg the weight to prevent it from sliding up and down the line. Make sure to bury the point of the hook into the body of the worm to ensure your rig is weedless.

I prefer a few basic colours for all my lures; colours naturally found in and around the water, which include baitfish colours such as pearl/silver and white, and forage and habitat colours such as watermelonseed, green pumpkin, junebug, pumpkinseed, or any variation of the above. The rule of thumb is to use darker colours when visibility is low, and lighter natural colours as the water gets clearer and visibility increases.

Worm StylesFor the sake of simplicity I am

going to divide the styles into two basic categories - worms and creatures.

Worms can be divided into three different styles, a straight-tailed worm, a ribbon-tailed worm with a lot of action, and a sickle-tailed worm.

When fishing is tough or the water is cold and clear, the straight-tailed worms sink faster with less action and will generally produce more strikes from inactive bass. As the weather warms and bass become more active, ribbon-tailed worms produce strikes enticed by their tail-action.

Ribbon-tailed worms are good to be fished amongst submerged grass and weed beds because they slip easily through the cover and provide a lot of motion with their tails. When fishing deeper water, off-coloured water or pitching close to cover sickle-tailed worms create more vibration and move more water, which is needed when trying to entice bass to bite in water with lower visibility.

Creature worms are the weirder looking plastics that sometimes resemble life found in or around the water such as lizards, or nothing at all, like brushhogs. Most of these plastics have primarily been designed for pitching purposes and elicit violent reaction-strikes from bass embedded in heavy cover.

HardwareThe type of cover you will be fishing should determine the

size of the sinker you fish with. When you have to penetrate dense cover you will need a heavy, pegged sinker. If bass are slow to feed or suspended you will need a lighter weight which will allow the lure a slower fall past the bass. When fishing very shallow water a light weight will bump the bottom and allow you to work through any cover lying close to the bank.

TechniqueCast or pitch your lure into the best-looking bass cover you

can find and drop the rod tip so that your lure can fall on a slack line. This allows the lure to fall straight down into the cover in a natural way. If you are fishing deeper water you may have to disengage your reel and feed some extra line until your bait hits the bottom. Always watch your line when you are doing this because any movement in the line could be an indication of a strike.

Once on the bottom, engage your reel and gently pick up the rod tip to feel if a bass has taken the worm. If it has, strike! If not, pick the bait up a couple of inches off the bottom and drop it down again. Repeat this action three or four times before moving your lure.

If you are fishing amongst tree limbs or a laydown, swim your worm through and over the limbs and lower your bait into any available holes. Repeat all of the above steps until you have thoroughly covered every inch of the cover you are fishing.

Swim the bait across the top of grass mats, dropping the worm into any holes, allowing it to sink down to the bottom each time.

‘n Liefde vir die Bosveld en ‘n keuse om hul kinders in die platteland groot te maak het gemaak dat André en Liesl de Beer nie huiwer toe hulle die geleentheid kry om Mokopane toe te trek en deel te word van Laerskool Krugerpark se wenresep nie.

André is deur die beheerliggaam aangestel om die skool se sportaktiwiteite te ko-ordineer en help organiseer. Hy is ook verantwoordelik vir die bestuur van projekte. “Behalwe vir sport is ek ook voortaan verantwoordelik vir die reëlings vir projekte soos die onlangse Oupa en Ouma-dag.”

Maar André is ‘n sportman in murg en been. Hy het van jongs af uitgeblink op die tennisbaan. Dit is sy liefde vir die sport wat hom vir etlike jare aan die stuur van Namibië se tennis ontwikkelingsprogram geplaas het.

“Nadat ek my honneursgraad in sportwetenskap behaal het, het ek ‘n

Bosvelddrome bring sportkenner na Krugerparkonderwysdiploma verwerf en toe begin skoolhou. Eers by Die Wilgers en toe by Affies,” gesels hy.

In 1996 het hy egter die behoefte aan ‘n tennisakademie in Namibië geïdentifiseer en na Windhoek verhuis om so ‘n fasiliteit op die been te bring.

Hy vertel trots van een van sy groot suksesverhale in Namibië: ‘n Meisie van die Reheboth gebied wat op sewe-jarige ouderdom haar eerste kennismaking met ‘n tennisraket gehad het by een van André se klinieke vir minispelers, het op 11 Namibië se no. 1 speler in haar ouderdomsgroep geword en die titel jaar-na-jaar gehou. Sy

het nou ‘n sportbeurs gekry om in die VSA te gaan studeer en tennis te speel.

Maar na 11 jaar in Namibië het dit vir die De Beers moeilik geraak om weer hul

verblyfpermitte hernu te kry. Boonop het hulle begin terugverlang Suid-Afrika toe.

Hulle het hulle in George in die Suid-Kaap gaan vestig waar André ‘n soortgelyke akademie op die been gebring het. “My akademie in Namibië is steeds aan die gang. Ek het die hele besigheid net so vir my assistent daar gegee om oor te neem en aan te gaan.

Maar hul harte was in die Bosveld. Ilse se pa was die vroëe 90’s Tolwe Laerskool se hoof en hulle het die Bosveld leer ken en liefkry deur gereelde kuiertjies by haar ouers. Hulle wou graag hul kinders, André (11) en Elsje

(8), op die platteland grootmaak

en so idillies as wat die Wes Kaap mag wees, is George ‘n stad.

Hulle het dus die geleentheid om Mokopane toe te verhuis met beide hande aangegryp. Die pos wat hy hier vul is deur die skool se beheerliggaam geskep om druk op onderwysers en onderwyseresse te verlig wat dikwels klastyd moet inboet om te help met sportreëlings of aktiwiteite.

Persoonlik stel hy dit ten doel om massadeelname onder leerlinge te bevorder. “Ek wil graag meer kinders aan sport sien deelneem,” sê hy.

Hy beplan om sommer binnekort ‘n mini-tennis kliniek by die skool aan te bied waar alle klein aspirant tennisspelertjies ‘n bietjie touwys gemaak gaan word op die tennisbaan. Sy lys idees en planne vir volgende jaar is eindeloos en sy passie vir die Bosveld en sy natuurlewe is so groot dat hy dalk nie net vir die skool ‘n aanwins gaan wees nie, maar vir die hele omgewing.
