Key FiguResRailways and related industries in northern France employ 16,800 people, 60% of them working in smes.

They account for 35% of French railway manufacturing activity, and represent total revenues of €1 billion.

three of the world’s top manufacturers/assemblers of rail cars–Bombardier, alstom and siemens, plus titagarh wagon aFR–are present in the region, along with manufacturers of essential subsystems (wheels, axles, infrastructure equipment) and over 200 specialized suppliers and subcontractors.

In addition, French Rail (SNCF) has a maintenance depot near Lille specializing in heavy maintenance, TGV renovation and overhaul, engineering and training. This site has over 1,000 employees. Eurotunnel is also on hand, with a terminal coordinating cross-Channel rail services–over 270 trains a day–and a maintenance center that includes the world’s longest repair facility: 825 meters in all.

Companies in the Valenciennes area make all types of rail cars used in France: single- and double-deck regional trains, light-rail cars for urban and suburban traffic, metro cars with automatic train control systems, and cross-Channel shuttles to carry automobiles.

Regional Railway stRuctuResaiF - Railway industries association With more than 120 member firms representing 10,000 employees in all, this association is dedicated to consolidating and promoting rail activities in Northern France. www.aifonline.com

ceF - railway test track A unique test track for urban and suburban light-rail systems, metros (including steel-wheel and rubber-tire vehicles) and signaling systems such as ERTMS. www.c-e-f.fr

eRa - european Railway agency ERA is in charge of writing Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSIs)-key technical rules applied Europe-wide with a view to building a truly interoperable European railway network.

i-trans is France’s national railway research and innovation cluster (“competitiveness cluster”), with roots in Northern France. It is in charge of collaborative research and innovation projects bringing together businesses, research and educational institutions, and works with 7 similar railway clusters in Europe under a special cooperation agreement (ERCI: European Railway Cluster Initiative).
