Town Crier -From the Editor

Welcome to the RGPS Stadium for this much anticipated Ernest Armstrong Cup fixture against Ryhope CW.

We take a break from the promotion race tonight as we continue our defence of the cup we won so spectacularly last May.

This may not have been the draw we would have wanted but it should be another exciting game and it gives us the chance to get past one of our main threats in this year’s competition.

Ryhope has enjoyed a great first season in the league and recently became the first club to pass the 100-goal mark. The front two of Johnny Butler (no relation) and Chris Winn have scored a vast majority of them, but as they showed in the 2-2 draw here in November, they are by no means a two-man team.

Off the pitch we are disappointed to announce the departure of winger Pete Bulmer, who has signed for Division One side West Auckland. Although not back with us for long and unable to recapture his best form on a regular basis, everyone at the club would like to wish him all the best for the future.

The biggest talking point in recent weeks however has been the pitch itself. The bad weather has certainly taken its toll and it has become very difficult for the lads to pass the ball on.

We have struggled to find our form at home at times this season and the pitch has definitely played a part in that. The ground staff has done well to get the games on in recent weeks and they have at least been rewarded with three home wins in a row. Hopefully there will be a fourth tonight.

Finally I would like to offer a warm Northallerton Town welcome back to the players, supporters and officials of Ryhope CW. We hope you enjoy your second visit of the season to the RGPS and everyone at the club would like to wish you all the best for the rest of the season, after tonight of course!

Enjoy the match,

Ricky Butler (Editor)

From The Dugout with Mark Fanning

Good evening and welcome to all the supporters, players and officials of Ryhope CW Football Club and today’s match officials.

Tonight’s EA Trophy game promises to be a tough test of our current form as we entertain one of the promotion favourites Ryhope. They have taken their form from the two previous seasons in the Wearside League into the Northern League and have

made the transition with consummate ease. They have scored in excess of 100 goals so far this season which is more than any other side in the league both 1st and 2nd division. The strike force of Butler and Winn have scored more league goals between them than all but one of the teams in division 2, which is some achievement.

If the last game between the two sides is anything to go by then tonight should be a cracker. I thought the 2-2 draw earlier in the season was a great advert for 2nd division football and let’s hope that tonight’s match is as entertaining.

One of our better away performances came recently at Seaham where despite going down to an early strike we played some good football to lead 3-1 going into the last minute of the first half. Our goals had come from Emmo(2) and a Danny Shoulder penalty and should have been enough for a comfortable lead at the break but from a position of some 5 yards offside their striker was allowed to continue his run on goal and slot passed Briggs.

For their manager, who was stood in line with the incident, to openly admit he was ‘a tattie field offside’, makes the linesman’s decision not to raise his flag even more annoying. To our credit we didn’t let the feeling of injustice bother us and in the second half we controlled mostof the play restricting our opponents to limited opportunities and when Emmo was brought down in the area, Shoulder stepped forward to score his second penalty of the game. A good solid 4-2 victory against the side who were just above us in the table was just the lift we needed. Our all round effort and tempo was exactly what had been missing during our slump in January.

The following Saturday we played host to local rivals Stokesley in the league. The game started fairly evenly but it wasn’t long before we took control and asserted plenty of pressure of their goal but we lacked the killer and decisive finish. The breakthrough came via a long ball from Gav Parkin in behind their defence which Emmo latched on to and fired past their keeper as he came out to narrow the angle. We were unable to add to our lead by the break and the danger is that one slip and they could be right back in it.

We continued to push forward in the second half and after a good build up involving Bobo and Mick Dunwell, Emmo scored his second of the game and when he completed his hat trick with a delicate lob over the keeper the game seemed to be all over. To Stokesley’s credit they kept going and after a corner was only half cleared their midfielder hit a cracking shot into the top corner. This setback seemed to spark us back into life and when Bobo headed home at the far post the scoring was complete, a 4-1 victory and our third league win on the bounce.

After our poor start to the year which had seen us drop to fifth place in the table, it was good to climb back into fourth, although Jarrow have continued their good run and are now looking to consolidate their position in the promotion places. For our part we need to continue winning our games and hope the teams above hit a bad run similar to ours.

But we can forget about the league for tonight as we look to continue our defence of the Ernest Armstrong Trophy and the winners can look forward to an away tie in the quarter final at Chester-Le-Street.

Enjoy the game,

Mark

In Town TonightRYHOPE CW FOOTBALL CLUB

The club was founded by the Coal Miners of Ryhope in 1892 but itwas not until 1927–28 that the club won its first league title.

However the club enjoyed most of its success in the 1960s, winning the Wearside Football League on four occasions, the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup twice as wellas the Sunderland Shipowners Cup and League Challenge Cup during the decade.

In the 1967–68 season, the team reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the only time in the club's history, losing 1–0 at home to Workington.

The club's next successful season was 1977–78, finishing 3rd in the league, winning the League Cup and with the season culminating in winning the Durham Challenge Cup for the only time in the club's history.

Between the 1988–89 and 1991–92 seasons, the club was known as Vaux Ryhopeafter a merger with Sporting Club Vaux (previously South Hetton FC).

In season 2009–10 the club won the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup for the first time in 44 years as well as being runners up in the league their highest position also for 44 years.

Season 2010–11 however was the most successful in the club's history, winning all four competitions; the Wearside League Title, Sunderland Shipowners Cup, Monkwearmouth Charity Cup and League Cup. This was only the third time in the history of the League that this has been achieved by a club.

However in season 2011–12 the club repeated the feat of the previous season winning all four competitions and gained promotion to the Northern League for the first time in its history. They ended the season having only been defeated once in their last 70 Wearside League and Cup games.

The Rt. Ho. Ernest Armstrong PC.

Ernest Armstrong was born on January 12, 1915 at Stanley, Crook, (about 200 yards from the football ground). He played in the Northern League for Stanley United as a centre half, making his debut while at Wolsingham Grammar School. Following his retirement from football he became a Northern League referee and in his later life a vociferous supporter of the club and of the league.

His brother, Dick was secretary of Stanley for a time, succeeding an uncle, Rob Walker just after “The Crook Town Affair of 1929”. A cousin Dickie from Easington also played in the early 1930’s before joining Nottingham Forest.

Ernest went to the City of Leeds Teacher Training College and became a teacher. He was elected Member of Parliament for Durham North-West on October 15th, 1964 and was a Junior Minister with the Labour Government of 1974 – 1979 and Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons from 1981 – 1987. He was succeeded in the House by his daughter Hilary following his retirement.

Mr Armstrong was elected President of the Northern League in 1981 and stood down in 1996, when the annual meeting of the league was held at his home in Co Durham. He died in Bishop Auckland General Hospital on July 8th, 1996.

Ebac Northern League News

HORDEN’S new coach John Cornforth was quick to play down the Messiah tag after he helped them to their first win in five months.

The former Sunderland player was appointed coach at Horden earlier this month, and his introduction had an immediate positive impact as they ended a 21-match barren run by overcoming Esh Winning 2-1.

“I’m not too keen on being called a Messiah!” said Cornforth, who made 32 appearances for Sunderland between 1985 and 1991, before moving to Swansea, Birmingham and Wycombe as a player, and then Torquay, Exeter and Newport as manager.

“When I moved to Wycombe from Birmingham as a player, they called me the Messiah – then I broke my ankle!”

Cornforth was once transferred for £350,000 from Swansea to Birmingham, and he also has two Wales caps – his grandmother was born in Wales – even though he was born in Whitley Bay.

He said: “I’ve come across some characters in football. When I was manager of Exeter, Uri Geller joined the board, and he was adamant that he could bring Paul Gascoigne to the club as a player, but that never happened for various reasons.

“I’ve taken over clubs at the bottom of their tables, and kept them up. When I went to Newport County, they were bottom of the Conference and I managed to keep them up on half the budget they had started the season with. I kept Torquay up after Leroy Rosenior left by bringing in players from Chelsea, Yeovil and Swansea. The chairman then brought in Ian Atkins, supposedly as a coach, but he gazumped me and was given the job.

“My last job in football was at an academy in South Korea, helping to develop youngsters. Some of them were technically very good and had amazing attitude, but there were problems at the UK Borders Agency and they could only come to England as scholars working for 16 hours a week, which was no good.

“After that fell through, I came back to the North-East after living in Devon for 12 years. I didn’t have anything lined up and then Phil Naisbett, who was with me at Exeter, asked if I fancied doing some coaching at Horden because they needed a hand.

“I want to be involved again so I agreed to help them out for the time being. I did one session and I was surprised at the standard of some of the talent.

“Then against Esh Winning, I did the warm up on the pitch and during the game I kept having words with the defence and midfield.

Page 13: Northallerton v's Ryhope CW e-programme
Page 14: Northallerton v's Ryhope CW e-programme

“I want to be involved in full time or semi pro football again, so I don’t know how long I will be helping Horden out for. They’re a great set of lads and they should be good enough to avoid relegation.”

RYHOPE CW manager Martin Swales say he has not any goal-scoring targets for his team.

Ryhope became the first club to reach 100 league goals for the season at the 2-1win at Whitehaven earlier this month.

“We’ve never aimed to score 100; all we’ve tried to do is win games. At the moment we’re happy to be in the running for promotion,” said Swales.

“There are some very good teams. Crook seems to be grinding out results and moving away from everyone, and there is Seaham and Northallerton just behind us. There will be plenty of twists and turns yet.”

Talking Point –Is match fixing the end of the game as we know it?

By Ricky Butler

The UEFA investigation into match fixing has thrown a massive cloud over the integrity of the game.

The one thing that has always set football apart from other sports is its honesty. You watch a match and you know that every single player on the pitch is doing all they can to win it. At least that is what we have always believed.

But suddenly every little mistake is now being over-analysed. Did the defender miss his tackle on purpose as he had bet on his team losing? Did the striker miss thateasy chance as he did not want his team to win?

Betting is now big business and betting on football is the biggest of the lot. You only have to see how many adverts for online bookmakers are shown during thetelevision coverage of any match to see evidence of that.

With so much at stake, billions of pounds in some cases, is it any wonder some are doing anything they can to ensure they get the result they want?

Personally I do not know how a football match can be fixed. It may be easy to get to one or two players, but all 11? Can’t see it myself. However, I have often suspected the odd referee could have been bribed… (take a bow Mr. Webb)

Thankfully this problem will probably never drop down to this level of the game. I cannot see too many Far East betting syndicates gambling on the outcome of Jarrow Roofing against Horden somehow, can you?

But that does not mean we shouldn’t be concerned. The result of problems at the top of the game all too often filters down eventually. Plus, match fixing could spell the end of the game as we know it.

Why would anyone pay good money to watch a match where the final result has already been pre-determined? Okay, so 70,000 do just that at every Manchester United home match but they have all had lobotomies so that doesn’t count.

Live sport is all about the unexpected. You never know what is going to happen.Take that away and it becomes just like watching Match of the Day without Gay Linekar. An improvement you might think, but watching football when you already know the result is like reheating last night’s Chinese – not as good as you thought it was going to be.

So it would be a sad day if these match fixing allegations are proven to be true, unless of course they fix it for us to win all our remaining matches and get promotion.

Seaham Red Star 2, Northallerton Town 4Ebac Northern League Division Two

09/02/2013

By Ricky Butler

TOWN ended a great week in fine style with this superb victory at third-placed Seaham Red Star.

After a win over fellow-promotion rivals North Shields seven days earlier, Mark Fanning's side produced another performance of the highest quality to move within one point of the top three.

The Town manager again shuffled his pack, making seven changes to the side that had beaten Alnwick in the Ernest Armstrong Cup in midweek. The only players to retain their place in the starting XI were Ian Smurthwaite in defence along with Marcus Laing, Peter Bulmer and James Bowman in midfield.

But Seaham, who have been occupying the third promotion place since the turn of the year, started well and they were given the boost of an early goal. James Briggs did well to deny Sean Sweeney initially, but the Washington-born striker reacted quickly to force home the rebound with the match just nine minutes old.

And they very nearly doubled their lead two minutes later. A rare mistake at the back from Grant Hickman let in Peter Bryson but Briggs came to his rescue with a fine save.

That proved to be the turning point as Town scored twice in eight minutes to gain control. Adam Emson latched on to a weak back-pass from Carl Thorp in the 12th minute, and as he rounded Shaun Newbrook, the Seaham goalkeeper brought him down in the area. Danny Shoulder, who had scored from the spot against North Shields, made no mistake again to make it 1-1.

With Town now in the ascendancy, they grabbed the lead soon after. Mickey Dunwell did well to hold off two defenders before squaring the ball for Emson to finish from close range - his 27th goal of the season.

Fanning was forced to reshuffle when Bowman, who had scored in previous two matches, was forced off with a calf injury just prior to the half-hour mark so Steve Butterworth was brought in to the midfield.

But it was 3-1, two minutes before the break, and what a goal it was. The move actually started with a Seaham corner and when the ball was cleared to half way, Emson beat his man before running through to slot past Newbrook from 18 yards.Emson was then inches away from grabbing a first half hat-trick when he beat Newbrook again but fired into the side-netting and that looked like being a crucial miss when the hosts pulled a goal back in controversial circumstances in first half stoppage time.

Page 21: Northallerton v's Ryhope CW e-programme

Alan Pegram appeared to be at least five yards offside when he ran through a static Town defence, but the linesmans flag stayed down and the former Hebburn Reyrolle midfielder rounded Briggs to slot home.

But Town did not let the apparent injustice affect them and they should have regained their two-goal cushion seven minutes after the resumption. Emson's cross from the left found Dunwell, and after his close range effort was somehow kept out by Newbrook, the former Billingham man fired over the top of a gaping goal.

It did not prove too costly however, as Emson was sent sprawling in the penalty area by Richard Stubbs five minutes later and Shoulder once again made no mistake fromthe spot.

Seaham were not out of it yet and Briggs needed to be at his best to deny substitute Channon North before Sweeney flashed a shot wide of the far post, but Town had chances to put the seal on the victory in the closing stages.

Newbrook denied Emson a hat-trick with a full-length save before making an even better stop to tip an effort from Butterworth over the top. Then, five minutes from time, Emson chipped the Seaham goalkeeper only to see the ball land agonisingly on top of the net.

"There was a real sense of injustice about the Seaham second goal on the stroke of half time," said Town assistant manager Martin Collins.

"The player’s attitude was great in the second half as they didn't allow this to affect them. The work rate all over the field was outstanding.

"It was one of those days where you looked round the whole team and could say that everybody had a good game."

ON THIS DAY – 27 February 1978

By Mark Jones

This evening we turn the clock back 35 years to a muddy Monday night in February 1978 and one of the most memorable games in Northern League history.

Match of the Day

Blyth Spartans may be plying their trade a couple of steps up the football pyramid alongside Whitby Town in the Premier Division of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League this season, but they can make a good claim for the title of Northern League Team of the Seventies. They spent much of that decade competing for supremacy with Spennymoor United, but it was their exploits in the 1977-78 FA Cup that earned them their place in national footballing folklore.

Their rise to prominence gathered pace in 1971-72. Runners-up to Spennymoor in the league, Spartans came within ninety minutes of Wembley in the FA Amateur Cup, losing a semi-final to Enfield at St James' Park. Silverware did find its way to Croft Park in the shape of the Northumberland Senior Cup and Blyth also reached the Third Round Proper of the FA Cup before losing to Reading in a replay.

1972-73 saw Spartans win the Northern League Championship, edging out Bishop Auckland by two points, and completing the double with the Northern League Cup while reaching the quarter-final of the Amateur Cup alongside Spennymoor and Evenwood, before losing 1-2 at Slough Town.

The following year produced an exciting climax to the Northern League season with Blyth and Spennymoor finishing level at the top on 64 points, sixteen clear of third placed Willington. The top two met in a one-off Championship play-off, with Spennymoor taking the title 2-1. Blyth took some consolation from regaining the Northumberland Senior Cup and reached the quarter-finals of the Amateur Cup again, losing 1-3 at Bishop Stortford in a season when Ashington reached the semi-finals.

1974-75 saw the Northumberland Senior Cup retained and the Northern League title regained, as Blyth finished ten points clear of Spennymoor at the top, and 1975-76 brought a third Northern League crown in four seasons albeit more narrowly, with Spartans edging out both Spennymoor and Willington by a single point. By the time the 1977-78 FA Cup campaign began, then, Blyth were firmly established as a powerhouse of the North East non league scene.

The road not quite to Wembley but closer than anyone at the time probably thought began at Dean Street, Shildon on Saturday 17 September 1977 with a comfortable 3-0 win in the First Qualifying Round. Three weeks later, on 8 October, Blyth was back in County Durham for a 1-1 draw at Crook Town in the Second Qualifying Round on a day when Middlesbrough was beating Manchester United at Ayresome Park. The replay was negotiated 3-0, sending Blyth into a Third Qualifying Round tie at Consett on 22 October.

Page 25: Northallerton v's Ryhope CW e-programme

Consett were dispatched 4-1 on another good day for Boro, who was this time beating Leeds United 2-1 on Teesside (indeed this was one of the rare 1970’s weekends when Boro, Sunderland, Newcastle, Darlington and Hartlepool all won). The win took Spartans into the Fourth Qualifying Round, one step from a potential tie against league opposition and the draw gave them another away day and more Northern League opposition. This time it was a trip to Bishop Auckland on 5 November 1977, for a 1-0 win which (to use the obligatory pun) may or may not have produced fireworks. In fairness to Ricky I should mention that on this occasion it was Arsenal who was beating Manchester United at the time, winning 2-1 at Old Trafford.

The First Round Proper finally gave Blyth a home draw, against non league Burscough. A 1-0 win on 26 November meant that Spartans had successfully negotiated five rounds, enough to take a First Division side to Wembley. Spennymoor United were still in contention too, beating Goole Town 3-1 to secure their own place in the Second Round Proper.

Second Round day was 17 December 1977, a week before Christmas with the gift of a glamour Third Round tie with a First Division giant on offer. Blyth was at home again, but this time with the tougher nut of Third Division Chesterfield to crack. The league side were sitting seventeenth in the table and in patchy form, having lost their previous three away matches but were still strong favourites. Spartans were not to be denied, though, with another 1-0 win taking them into the Promised Land. Spennymoor's hopes came to a crashing end with a 0-6 defeat at Rotherham United.

The weekend was spent dreaming of who Blyth might get in Monday lunchtime's draw. European Champions Liverpool or local giants Newcastle United were top of the Christmas wish list. In the event, six rounds of toil brought an anticlimax –Enfield at home. As the dust settled, however, the realisation grew that this might not be such a bad draw. It was a home tie with a real possibility of further progress and an opportunity for revenge for the 1972 Amateur Cup semi-final defeat in the best possible way.

Spartans were not going to forego the opportunity, as a fourth successive 1-0 win took them to the heady heights of the FA Cup Fourth Round. The win, on 7 January 1978, left Blyth as the sole non league survivors, Scarborough, who lost 0-3 at Brighton, being amongst the five non league clubs who went out. It also meant that Blyth had gone further than Sunderland, who lost 0-1 at home to Bolton Wanderers, Leeds United, who lost 1-2 at home to Manchester City, and Liverpool, who lost a classic 2-4 at Chelsea.

Looking back, this was a pretty useful Blyth side, with the experience of Ron Guthrie, who played for Sunderland in the 1973 Cup Final, and former Brentford and Southend United striker Terry Johnson alongside prospects such as Steve Carney and Alan Shoulder, both of whom went on to join Newcastle United, all marshalled by coach Jackie Marks, one of the great characters of the Northern League. Amongst the eccentricities that caught the imagination of the media were dressing room team renditions of Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah (Google it, youngsters) and a pre match drink of "speed oil" to release tension and build courage. Blyth Spirit perhaps?

Page 26: Northallerton v's Ryhope CW e-programme
Page 27: Northallerton v's Ryhope CW e-programme

It was clear from the Fourth Round draw that the squad would be tested to the full, as Spartans were given an away tie with Second Division Stoke City. Stoke had only been relegated from the top flight at the end of the previous season and featured the likes of veterans Howard Kendall, Terry Conroy and Alec Lindsay together with a young Garth Crooks. The winter weather was taking its toll on fixtures and on the scheduled day for the Fourth Round of 28 January the match was called off, but this simply served to add another twist to the story.

The postponement ensured that Blyth's name was in the hat for the Fifth Round and Monday lunchtime brought the draw that the whole of the North East wanted. Newcastle United or Wrexham v Blyth Spartans or Stoke City. Pull off an unlikely victory at Stoke and the trip to St James' Park was on and with a place in the last eight of the FA Cup at stake to boot.

The game at Stoke finally took place on Monday 6 February and Spartans quickly showed they meant business, Johnson putting them ahead after ten minutes. Whatever was said in the home dressing room at the break had an effect, though, as Stoke scored two quick goals in the second half as their higher status began to show. Still Blyth would not lie down and ten minutes from time they drew level. A Guthrie free kick deflected off the wall onto one post, Shoulder headed the rebound against the other post and Carney finished it off.

Incredibly, more was to come in the very last minute, Johnson finishing off another free kick. 3-2 to Blyth, much to the despair, no doubt, of Stoke's Viv Busby who wrote himself into history as the man who was on the wrong end of two of the great cup shocks, having also been in the Newcastle team that lost at Hereford in 1972. Spartans were through and on their way to their dream match against the Magpies. Or maybe not. They came off the pitch to learn that while they had been doing their bit, Newcastle had been losing their Fourth Round Replay 1-4. The Fifth Round would take Blyth across the border to Wrexham. European football?

The eyes of the nation were now on the little team from the North East and the game at Wrexham was played out in front of the Match of the Day cameras on 18 February. It was classic FA Cup fare. A frozen, rutted pitch, a packed ground and an army of green and white clad travelling supporters who were hailed by the players even before the match kicked off, as they unfurled a "Super Supporters OK" banner on the pitch.

The frozen pitch, in fact, played into the non league side's hands. Wrexham full back Hill tried an uncertain back pass to Welsh legend Dai Davis, underhit it and Terry Johnson nipped in to put Blyth ahead. The home team toiled and strained to get back into it but Spartans frustrated them until finally, in the final moments, fate conspired against them.

Blyth captain John Waterson tackled Wrexham's Bobby Shinton in the area and the ball clearly rebounded off the home player and out for a goal kick. The referee, though, gave a corner. The first kick was punched away by goalkeeper Clark for a second corner, which Clark easily gathered. The referee, though, had noticed that Cartwright had moved the corner flag to make more space and it had fallen over. He

ordered the kick to be retaken and this time Dixie McNeill headed home. 1-1 and Blyth denied in the cruellest way.

In a further twist of irony, the Police (not the pop group) directed that the replay should be moved to Newcastle. Blyth was to get their big match at St James' Park after all. So it was that 35 years ago tonight 42,000 fans flocked to Newcastle to watch a Northern League team in action, with an estimated 10,000 more locked outside. The Blyth coach needed a Police escort to reach the ground, the players assuming there had been a traffic accident and not imagining that the crowds were there to honour them.

This time, though, Wrexham were ready for the challenge. It was hard to avoid the feeling that, as can often be the case, the minnows had missed their chance first time out. The Welsh side came into the game in third place in the Third Division, a point off the top with games in hand, and their class began to tell.

On a heavy, muddy, pitch, Blyth were two behind inside twenty minutes. First, Whittle scored from a contentious penalty and then McNeill blasted home the second. The quarter final draw had already been made but Spartans' hopes of claiming the rich prize of a tie against Arsenal were receding. Although Johnson pulled one back with eight minutes remaining that was as good as it got.

Try as they might in a frantic finish, the second goal wouldn't come. The cup run that had started at Shildon in September was finally over in front of 42,000 at the end of February as Blyth left the pitch to a rousing reception, a reward of £350 worth of vouchers each from a local bedroom furniture supplier and a wealth of memories that would still be being written about in non league football programmes 35 years later to the night.

Elsewhere

Just down the A19 on 27 February 1978, Middlesbrough was playing their FA Cup Fifth Round tie at home to Bolton Wanderers. Goals from Billy Ashcroft and Stan Cummins gave Boro a 2-0 win in front of 36,662.

At the time Boro had never been to an FA Cup semi-final but hopes were growing that this could be their year as the win set up a quarter-final at home to Second Division Orient, who produced the surprise of the night 35 years ago today by beating First Division Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge. Roffey put through his own goal to put Chelsea ahead, but Peter Kitchen scored twice to turn it around for the visitors in front of 36,379. Sadly for Boro, Orient sprang another surprise in the next round, putting the Teessiders out in a replay.

The night's other replay saw Nottingham Forest and Queens Park Rangers draw 1-1, taking them to a second replay in the days before FA Cup penalty shoot outs.

There were too games in the Fourth Division 35 years ago tonight, Rochdale beating Swansea City 2-1 and Huddersfield Town winning 1-0 at Stockport County, while Rangers reached the Scottish League Cup final with a 5-2 semi-final victory over Forfar Athletic.

In the News

Growing unemployment was in the news on 27 February 1978, with the TUC calling for the Chancellor to give the economy the biggest boost it had ever had in April's Budget. Industry and commerce were also being hit by a flu epidemic, particularly in Scotland.

Indira Gandhi's Congress Party enjoyed success in elections in India, while Chinese Premier Hau Kuo-feng told his country's Parliament that the country aimed to reach the front rank of world powers by the end of the Century.

A brand new Volvo 343 would set you back £3,549.77 and an Electrolux freezer could be had for £135 in the winter sales, but if those prices seem cheap by today's standards, Sharp microwave cookers were advertised in the newspapers 35 years ago today for £270.

Meanwhile, the Scalp and Hair Hospital in London was advising women not to tie their hair in tight plaits because it might cause them to go bald. (Editor’s note – If only I had listened to their advice)

For Your Entertainment

Children's TV on BBC1 on 27 February 1978 included Play School, Deputy Dawg, Jackanory, John Craven's Newsround and Blue Peter (in which Cambridge University students attempted to break the world record for musical chairs). The evening schedule included Blake's Seven, Panorama and the Robert Redford film The Candidate.

ITV had the wonderful Indoor League at lunchtime (a programme based around televised pub games for those who don't remember). The big question on Coronation Street was "who was Suzie Birchall calling in France?" and the schedule also featured Opportunity Knocks, A Sharp Intake of Breath, World in Action and Hazell. If Indoor League wasn't enough for you, ITV also had late night darts from The Butlin's Grand Masters Darts Championships.

If you fancied a film on the big screen, the movies on release at the cinemas included The Sting, The Choirboys, Annie Hall and Carrie.

Meanwhile in the music singles chart ELO were at six with Mr Blue Sky, Scott Fitzgerald and Yvonne Keely were at five with If I Had Words, Rose Royce was Wishing on a Star at four, Darts was at three with Come Back My Love, Brotherhood of Man was at two with Figaro and the UK number one was Abba with Take a Chance on Me.

So that was February 1978. Now I must take this plait out of my hair.

Northallerton Town 4, Stokesley SC 1Ebac Northern League Division Two

16/02/2013

By Ricky Butler

A MAGNIFICENT hat-trick from Adam Emson ensured the Town revival continued with this comfortable victory over Stokesley SC.

Manager Mark Fanning made just one change to the side that had won 4-2 at Seaham last weekend - Steve Butterworth replacing the now departed Pete Bulmer on the right side of midfield.

Town were on the front foot from the start and twice Butterworth came close to breaking the deadlock in the opening seven minutes. Firstly he fired over at the far post after a lovely cross-field ball from the impressive Ian Smurthwaite, before seeing a close range effort blocked by defender Phillip King.

But it should have been 1-0 in the 19th minute. Gav Parkin's corner from the left hit the top of the crossbar and fell invitingly to Emson at the far post, but with the goal gapping he somehow blasted over the top.

However, the leading scorer would more than make amends ten minutes later. A long ball from the back by Danny Shoulder found Emson on the halfway line and he easily beat his man before racing towards goal with the air of a man who was not going to miss. And as Laverick came out to narrow the angle, he coolly slotted the ball home from 18 yards.

Fanning had expressed on his troops during the interval just how vital it was to kill the game off and they came out for the second half looking determined to do just that. Emson was denied by Laverick at full stretch within four minutes of the restart, but it was 2-0 seven minutes later.

James Bowman, who was having another fine game down the left, burst into the penalty area, and when the ball broke to Mickey Dunwell, he showed great awareness to square for Emson to tap home.

Emson then completed his hat-trick twenty minutes from time to finally put the game to bed. Parkin's long ball sent him clear again and this time the former Stokesley man chipped the ball over the advancing Laverick from 12 yards - a great way to bring up 30 goals for the season.

The visitors did grab a consolation almost immediately with a fine strike from Greg Upton but it was Town who had the final word soon after.

Parkin was again the creator with a lovely free kick to the far post where Bowman rose highest to nod his third goal in the last four matches.

History of Northallerton Town

Nobody knows the exact formation date of Northallerton Town Football Club, but The Elliott Bowl, a trophy donated by local M.P. Sir George Elliott, was contested for the first time in 1895 carries the clubs name as its first winner.

Known variously as Northallerton, Northallerton Alliance and Northallerton Town, the club played for many years on The Bluestone Ground behind County Hall. Many honours were won during this period including The Harrogate and District League Championship, The Richmond Cup, Bedale Cup, Milbank Cup, Orde-Powlett Cup, Dales Cup, Harrogate Invitation Cup and The Alverton Trophy.

The Club was forced to leave its Bluestone Ground in 1974 when North Yorkshire County Council put a compulsory purchase order on the ground in order to extend County Hall. (The extensions never took place and the Bluestone Ground still remains a football ground to this day.) The N.Y.C.C re-housed the club on its present Ainderby Road Ground (re-named the Regency Stadium in 2006) where two pitches, a clubhouse, changing rooms and car park were officially opened on August 21st.1976.

Northallerton continued to play in the Harrogate and District League until the end of the 1981-82 season when, with chairman Stan Kirkbride and manager Neil Milestone at the helm, they successfully applied to become founder members of new the Northern League Second Division in 1982. Sadly Mr Kirkbride passed away during that first season of Northern League football and was replaced by Vice-chairman Ron Longstaff.

Joining the Northern League was a big step for the club as something like £150,000 had to be raised to upgrade the Ainderby Road Ground to Northern League standards. The Club’s first game in the Northern League was on August 28th 1982 when they were defeated 4-1 at Ryhope. A week later, Town gained revenge with a 2-0 home victory when Ryhope became the first Northern League visitors to Ainderby Road.

Early years in the Northern League were difficult but they reached the final of the North Riding County Cup in the 1983-84 season, unfortunately losing 2-1 to York Railway Institute. The appointment of former Burnley, Leeds United and Middlesbrough star Ray Hankin as manager in March 1989 saw an upturn in the club’s fortunes.

Hankin guided them to promotion to the First Division in 1989-90 having finished runners-up in the Second Division behind champions Murton. Season 1990-91 saw the club consolidate itself in Division One, but at the end of that season Hankin resigned and his number two Geoff Cane was appointed manager.

Under Cane, the Club enjoyed great success in both the F.A Trophy and the F.A Cup - reaching the last sixteen in the F.A Trophy in 1992-93 before going out to Farnborough of the Vauxhall Conference - and in the same season they reached the fourth qualifying round of the F.A Cup before narrowly losing at Accrington Stanley.

Page 35: Northallerton v's Ryhope CW e-programme

Major ground redevelopment was carried out while Cane was in charge - a new grandstand with seating for 150 spectators was erected together with covered terracing for a further 400 spectators. The open ends behind both goals were also terraced, making the Ainderby Road ground the envy of many. The Club will always be grateful to Geoff as without him most of this work would not have been completed. Unfortunately, off the field disagreements were taking place which resulted in Cane leaving the club at the end of the 1992-93 season. Sadly Geoff passed away in 1995, aged 46.

Town were now a force to be reckoned with in the Northern League and they won the League Challenge Cup in 1993-94, when they beat Blyth Spartans 2-0 in the final at Brandon. But this was to be the last game that Northallerton Town Football Club was to play.

Disaster struck during the summer of 1994 when they were declared financially insolvent in the High Court and were ordered to close down. Had this happened during the playing season then there is not much doubt that the club would have folded. Fortunately there was still time before the new season started for a local businessman to come forward and rescue the club, this despite vandals breaking into the ground and daubing slogans on the stand walls and breaking all the windows in the clubhouse.

A new committee was formed and the club was able to kick off the 1994-95 season under the new name of Northallerton F.C. 1994. Still in the First Division of the Northern League, the opening game was Northallerton, League Cup winners, against Durham City, League Champions, in the annual Cleator Cup. After playing a 1-1 draw after extra time, Durham won the cup on penalties.

With no money available to reimburse players there was a mass exodus, and many players from local football leagues were brought in. Although these players gave their all it was no surprise when they were relegated at the end of season 1994-95.

During season 1995-96, the Club gradually got back on its feet, but after a poor opening the Committee decided that players could once again be reimbursed and many of the club’s former players returned resulting in the Club finishing in a respectable 5th place in the league.

During the summer of 1996 the Club was allowed to reinstate the name “Town” to once again become Northallerton Town Football Club (1994), and under the joint guidance of the management duo of Mickey Sell and John Woods, they won promotion back to the First Division when they won the Second Division Championship. For personal reasons both Sell and Woods resigned as joint managers at the end of 1996-97, although both remained at the club, Woods as assistant manager and Sell as an occasional player.

After making a disastrous start to life back in the First Division (winning just three points from the first twelve games) the Club appointed former Bristol Rovers, Middlesbrough, Carlisle United and Darlington star Archie Stephens as their manager. But they fared no better, and, after finishing second bottom, they were

Page 36: Northallerton v's Ryhope CW e-programme

relegated back to the Second Division. Stephens, and his assistant Woods, left the club by mutual consent at the end of the season.

Peter Mulcaster was appointed manager at the start of the 1998-99 season, and heguided the club to a commendable fourth place in the league. But in the February of his second season (1999-00), with the club lying in third place and one of the favourites for promotion, he surprised the club with his shock resignation in order to take the vacant manager’s job at Spennymoor United.

He was replaced as manager by the experienced ex-Guisborough Town boss Micky Hodgson, but after failing to win promotion at the first attempt, Hodgson and hisassistant Peter Bell left the club at the end of season 2000-01.

Peter Mulcaster returned to take over for his second spell as team manager at the start of the 2001-02 season, but after two seasons in charge and failing to get the team promoted, it was mutually agreed that he should leave the club at the end of season 2002-03.

The very experienced former Whitby Town captain Paul Burton was appointed manager at the start of the 2003-04 season. Under Burton, Town regained First Division status when they finished runners-up in Division Two at the end of the 2005-06 season, where they also reached the final of the North Riding Senior Cup for the first time in their history - losing 3-1 to York City at Bootham Crescent.

The following season (2006-07) they again reached the Senior Cup final - losing 5-0to a strong Middlesbrough side at Billingham Synthonia. Burton surprised the club at the end of the season by handing in his resignation for what he claims were personal reasons.

He was replaced by the vastly experienced Andy Toman, who lives in the Town, but he resigned after just the one season.

Toman was replaced by Alan Robinson, but on the eve of the season Robinson shocked the club with his resignation as he was going to start a new life in Thailand.

Ex-Doncaster Rovers player Martin Speight and former Norton & Stockton Ancients manager Stuart Dawson - who were to have been Robinson’s assistants - were appointed as joint managers, but following a run of poor results, Dawson left the club in early January.

Speight was then appointed sole manager but results failed to improve and, following the heavy 5-1 home defeat by Ashington at the end of March, he also resigned.

Mark Fanning, who had been part of the coaching staff at Darlington FC, was appointed and he is now in his fourth season as manager. Last season, Fanning guided the club to their first silverware in 18 years when they came from behind to beat Second Division champions Team Northumbria 3-2 in the final of the Ernest Armstrong Cup.
