Welcome back to the RGPS Stadium for this Ebac Northern League Division Two fixture against Alnwick Town.

First of all I would like to wish all our fans, players and supporters a happy, peaceful and prosperous New Year. A little late I know, but the weather means this is our first home match of 2013.

Things have not been going too well for us on the pitch in recent weeks which has seen us embark on a run of seven games without a win. Of course it is not what any of us would have wanted but everyone in this league has had a poor run at some stage of the season and this is ours.

The good news is we are still in the promotion race and as has been shown, we are more than capable of reeling off 5-6 wins in a row. Let’s not forget this is the same group of players who were sweeping aside all-comers just a few weeks ago and you do not become a bad team overnight.

Football is all about confidence and one win will make all the difference. Let’s hope that win comes today and we can push on again. Let’s not forget there is still a long way to go.

The highlight of the last few weeks was undoubtedly the North Riding Cup tie at York City 10 days ago. The match at Bootham Crescent was a great experience for everyone at the club and the lads gave a great account of themselves against a side that had 9 full time professionals.

Off the pitch there has been a change to the coaching staff. Craig Winter, currently sidelined with a back injury, has taken on the role of player-coach. Wints is a well respected figure at the club and I am sure everyone wishes him well in the role.

The games are certainly coming thick and fast at the moment although a lot of that may well depend on how well our pitch holds up. The bad weather has certainly taken its toll and it remains to be seen if all the scheduled matches go ahead. Fingers crossed the weather will improve, although the forecast is not promising.

Finally I would like to offer a warm Northallerton Town welcome to the players, supporters and officials of Alnwick Town for today’s game. I hope you enjoy your visit and we wish you all the best for the rest of the season, after today of course.

Good afternoon and welcome to all the supporters, players and officials of Alnwick Town Football Club and today’s match officials.

To say we are in the middle of a poor spell is a massive understatement. Its times like this that you learn a lot about your players, who is prepared to get stuck in and drag the team out of the run and those who want to bury their heads in the sand and leave it up to others. The only way to move forward is for everyone to pull in the same direction,

roll up their sleeves and work their socks off.

At York City in the North Riding Senior Cup I thought we saw evidence of this starting to happen. Despite playing against 7 pros and some good youngsters we fought hard, work tirelessly and with a little more luck, could have gained a better result than a 3-0 defeat. The first ten minutes we were chasing shadows but gradually we started to gain some possession and our more illustrious opponents were struggling to break us down.

On thirty five minutes disaster struck when a back pass to Briggsy caught him having to readjust and slipping as he did so. He managed to regain his feet but was unfortunate to lose his footing again as he went to kick clear and their forward was able to score into an empty net.

This lifted York and we were again pushed back by some good passing football and from a defence splitting pass their striker was able to finish one on one with Briggs. The half time whistle couldn’t come soon enough which gave us chance to regroup, regain our composure and start again. The second half began more even and we had a couple of good chances to get back into the game, firstly a header from Bowman which he put wide and a shot from Bulmer which was blocked near the line by Emmo with Marcus smashing the follow up well wide.

When York scored their third from a good move and close finish from a great pullback, the game was over as a contest but we battled away and ensured that the score-line was not to be any worse.

At Esh Winning last Saturday we asked the lads to take the work ethic from the York game into this game which they did for the first 5 minutes, then slipped back into defending too deep, allowing Esh Winning to mount persistent pressure on our goal and finally from overplaying at the back we conceded a corner. The corner fell to their forward who was able to fire home at the near post.

This still did not force us to increase our tempo and from an optimistic ball forward their striker managed to get to the ball first to score their second. To be fair we were lucky to go in only two down at the break and we tried to get the lads to play at a higher tempo and to get their back four turned as much as possible. We seemed to be doing this well until from a quick break they scored their third and the hill we had to climb had suddenly become a mountain. From there on in we laid siege to their goal and despite pulling one back from Chilli we were unable to score further and so fell to our third league defeat on the trot.

Today we must ensure that we return to winning ways if we are to ensure that this season does not fall away from what had been a positive start. We managed to win the reverse fixture earlier in theseason at Alnwick where our clinical finishing was the main difference and we must start finding that cutting edge again and quickly.

ALNWICK TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB

Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, known as Alnwick United Services, it was the only ‘Association Football’ side between Newcastle and Dunbar. They went on to win the North Northumberland League in 1898-99.

1900 saw the club move to St. James Park under the new name Alnwick United Juniors. It was from this time until the beginning of World War One that the club changed its name from United to Town and back to United several times.

The Club’s most memorable years were between 1960-1972, in just over a decade they won 20 trophies, including eight Northern Alliance titles and five league cups,including the Durham Central League in 1964-65. This was the season the Alliance didn’t operate. In 1971-72 the club celebrated as winners of the Northumberland Amateur Cup, and also in 1980-81 as winners of the Northern Alliance Subsidiary Cup.

After several unsuccessful Northern League applications, Alnwick Town were accepted to the inaugural Second Division in 1982, leaving the Northern Alliancehaving won the championship a total of eleven times and the league cup five times. They have since spent over £30,000 on renovating the clubhouse facilities and floodlights which were first used in October 1987 and officially switched on by Newcastle United when they played Alnwick the following March.

They finished runners-up in 1988-89, gaining promotion, on goal difference, to Northern League Division One. In this season Alnwick elected the League’s first female chairman in Judith Daycott.

By the end of 1990 it was evident the club was not in good shape, they were relegated from the Northern League Division One in 1990-91, however they went on to be runners up in the Craven Cup in 1995-96 and 1999-2000. But from this point the club appeared to be on a downward spiral and finished bottom of the Northern League Division Two at the end of the 2007-07 season.

Disappointingly, this was followed by relegation from the Northern League for failing to meet ground criteria, although they did entertain Newcastle United Reserves in the first round of the Northumberland FA Senior Cup.

A remarkable turning point came when a new committee was put into place and was set to take over the club at the end of the 2008-09 season. It was welcome news.

Bringing the club back from the brink of closure proved to be every bit as tough as expected but with much optimism and the pledge of financial backing from the Duke of Northumberland the club turned a corner.

The season ended with Alnwick the winners of the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup Final, beating Newcastle East End 2-0. Alnwick Town Reserves became double winners, with the Runciman Cup and NNL Division Two Champions. Alnwick Town made history in 2009 when, for the first time ever, they were awarded FA Charter Standard.

Alnwick then went on to win the Senior Benevolent Bowl Final 2-1(aet) against Heaton Stannington, and in the same season Alnwick Town Reserves were again double winners with the Sanderson Cup and the Bilclough Cup.

In 2010-11 Alnwick Town finished second in the Northern Alliance. This good run continued into 2011 with the club being accepted into Northern League Division Two and the Reserves accepted into the Northern Alliance Division Two.

This season, the club has formed a third team Alnwick A. They have joined the North Northumberland Football League Division Two. This means that all three teams are playing in a higher position than in previous seasons.

Danny Lowes - Defender. Age 21. Joined 2008.Danny has been a first team regular since the age of 18, excelling anywhere along the back line, but also possess’ an eye for goal & loves attacking down the flank. As the hardest “Grafter” in the club Danny likes nothing better than getting on the bike in his spare time & cycling all over Northumberland.

Neil Catlow - Defender. Age 28. Joined 2000.Cultured defender with vast Northern League experience who has a deadly left foot, watch out for his set pieces, also possesses a quick turn of pace during the summer months. Often mistaken for Alan Shearer & has been known to do over 2000 press ups a week when in full training.Previous Clubs: Alnwick Juniors, Berwick Rangers, Alnmouth, Ashington.

Alex Makin – DefenderRejoined the club this season. An attacking fullback who isn’t afraid to get into a tackle. Competes with Marc Nixon for the tallest player at the club.

Bryan Murray – Defender / Midfielder. Age 30. Joined 2003.Club Captain, Bryan is the heart and soul of Alnwick Town with over 400 games for the club, leading by example can play anywhere along the back line, but excels at right back. When not building walls Bryan likes nothing better than cooking a pair of Craster Kippers for breakfast.Previous Clubs: Alnwick Juniors, Craster, Amble.

Gary Patterson - Defender. Age: 33 (23).Joined 1998. Gaz is an Alnwick stalwart with over 600 games for the club, a commanding centre half who can also play in midfield. When not spending his hard earned money, Gaz enjoys nothing better than a round of golf in the rain. Bookies favourite for own goal of the season against Crook away.

Tom MacPherson - Defender. Age 23. Joined 2011.Tom is a classy centre half who dominates in the air at both ends of the pitch. He has made a promising start to his career with Alnwick Town, and is also a contender for own goal of the season.Previous clubs: Alnwick Juniors, Rothbury, Wallington.

David Hubbard – Defender. Age 23. Joined 2011.Hubby has made the step up from the reserves this season, and has already shown he has the potential to succeed in the Northern League. Not afraid of a tackle, and is normally a good price with Betfair to pick up the first booking.Previous clubs: Alnwick Juniors, Shilbottle CW.

Jake Lowes - Defender/Midfielder.Jake has also made the step up from the reserves this season, and will hopefully be the future of Alnwick’s left hand side for many years to come. Easy to spot on the pitch as he could do with a haircut.

Mark Cockburn - Midfield. Age 32. Joined 1998.Marky is a creative midfielder who works all day & has an eye for goal with driving runs into the box, where he’s often compared to Archie Gemmell, is vastly experienced in the Northern League. He also scored the winning goal in the Northumberland Senior Bowl final in 2010.Previous clubs: Alnwick Juniors, Ryton, Ashington.

Tony Brown - Midfield. Age 23. Joined 2008.Tony is a classy creative midfielder known as Alnwick’s “Xavi” has an eye for goal & also good in the air.Previous clubs: Alnwick Juniors, Shilbottle.

Paul Hodge - Midfield. Age 32. Joined 2011.An attacking midfielder, Paul has a cracking left foot & delivers quality from set pieces or from the flank. A former junior who has returned this season, also surprisingly quick for an old man.Previous clubs: Alnwick Juniors, Seaton Deleval.

Chris Kidd – Midfield. Age 21. Joined 2011.Local Celebrity (@Chris_Kidd4), Balokiddy is another player from the reserves to make the step up this season. A tough tackling midfielder with a bright future ahead of him.Previous clubs: Alnwick Juniors, Alnmouth.

Kieran Hogg - Midfield. Joined 2011.Joined from the reserve team this season. Rumour has it that Stoke City are eyeing him as a replacement for Rory Delap when his back gives way. Apparently better than Brooks at darts.

James Jackson – MidfieldJoined this season from Shilbottle, ‘Mins’ has a bright future ahead of him at the club.

Dale Kennedy - Forward. Age 20. Joined 2008.Dale has an unbelievable work rate & is non-stop for 90 minutes. He can play anywhere on the pitch, but is a real threat up front & score important goals. Out for the rest of the season through injury, but everyone is looking forward to his return. Previous clubs: Alnwick Juniors.

Jon Colley - Forward.Another player to make the step up from the reserves, Jonny has contributed with goals and assists throughout the season whilst becoming a first team regular.Previous clubs: Alnwick Juniors, Embelton.

Ben Keenan - Forward. Age 32. Joined 1997. Di Keenio, who has been the leading goalscorer for the past 3 seasons, is the fans favourite. He is also vastly experienced at Northern League level, always proving a handful for the opposition defences. Affectionately known in North Shields as Granddad.Previous clubs: Alnwick Juniors, Whitley Bay, Morpeth Town, Shilbottle,

Alnmouth.

Wyn Fremlin – ForwardJoined the club this season. Wyn has started well and his pace has been causing problems for plenty of defenders.

David Ross - Physio. Age 53. Wing Commander Ross performs a great roll for the club both on & off the pitch, always has the lads in tip top condition. Whilst also driving the club forward off the pitch. Any twinges or muscular pain then Dave’s your man. Previous clubs: Leighton Town, Wing F.C, Bromham Utd, Robin Hood F.C (Bermuda)

Paul Yeadon – Manager.Paul was given the manager’s job on a permanent basis in the summer following successful spells as caretaker boss. Paul has been involved with the football club from junior level. The club are hoping that Yeadaz has a long and successful career as manager.

Ahead of this afternoon’s game, we catch up with Alnwick Townmanager Paul Yeadon to get his views on the match and the start to the Ebac Northern League Division Two season.

How would you assess your club's season to date?

It has been a difficult season so far; with players having other commitments or injured and getting points deducted it’s been a struggle. But we feel we turned a corner last weekend away to Whickham picking up 3 points and putting out our

strongest squad this season so far.

What are your expectations for the club this season?

At the start of the season it was to finish mid table, but as you can see we are bottom of the league and have a fight on our hands. But I am 100% sure we will be playing

Northern League football next season and hopefully get a cup run.

What are your personal hopes for the season?

To keep Alnwick in the league, it’s my 1st full season as a manager and it’s been hard work but I am enjoying the challenge and hope to turn things round. Alnwick is unique as nearly all the players in our 1st and reserve teams have come through our junior sections at the club and I am very keen for this to continue over the season.

Which teams do you think will be challenging for promotion from Division Two this season?

I think North Shields could be possible challengers along with Ryhope CW, but I hope we could cause a few up sets along the way.

What are your predictions for your match at Northallerton tonightand what do you expect from us?

I expect a hard working, well organised football team tonight with a mixture of experience and youth. We played you early in the season and you came away 4-0

winners but we created a lot of chances but didn’t hit the back of the net …… Score will be 3-2 to Alnwick

Town were missing Craig Winter, Gary Shardha, Stu Hardy and Alex Kell through injury. With the wind at their backs, Town played most of the game in the visitors half and took the lead on 12 minutes when Colin Anderson's cross was slid home by Carl Chillingsworth.

Town doubled their lead on 30 minutes when Chillingsworth's reverse pass freed Dan Clayton who fired across the keeper into the bottom corner via the inside of the post.

On 75 minutes Town made the game safe when Peter Bulmer crossed for Chillingsworth who beat the keeper from 12 yards for his second and Town's third.

Town were without Carl Chillingsworth but Colin Anderson returned. Town started brightly and were on top for the early stages.

Danny Chapman looked to have given Town the lead in the 12th minute but his goal was ruled out for offside. They took the lead on 21 minutes when good work by Anderson and Steve Butterworth set up James Bowman to score from 6 yards.

Alnwick equalised on 51 minutes when Moffet showed great composure lifting the ball over Craggs to make it 1-1.

Town were then reduced to 10 men on 55 minutes when Danny Shoulder was shown a red card after a tangle with an Alnwick player.

Town travelled without the suspended Danny Shoulder while Col Anderson, Gary Cook, Ian Smurthwaite and Steve Craggs were also unavailable.

Town were fast out of the blocks and got the boost of an early goal. A long ball out of defence by Craig Winter was deftly flicked on by Steve Butterworth into the path of Carl Chillingsworth, who drilled home from the edge of the penalty area.

It was 2-0 midway through the second half when Adam Emson cut in from the right before firing into the corner of the net, while Emsonscored twice more in the closing stages to compete his hat-trick, the last of which came from the penalty spot.

Famous former Alnwick players

Burnley's 1960’s full-back John Angus, who won England honours.

Goalkeeper Chris Guthrie, released after one reserve game and later sold by Weymouth to Tottenham Hotspur for £100,000.

Tony Carss, a former Alnwick Junior, went on to have a career in the game from 1994 until 2006 with Blackburn Rovers, Darlington, Cardiff City, Chesterfield, Carlisle, Oldham Athletic and Huddersfield. Currently working as an Academy coach with Huddersfield Town.

James Sinclair, former junior, made his debut in the Premier League for Bolton Wanderers against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. He also played briefly for Gateshead, before moving abroad an appearing for Sektzia Nes Tziona in Israel. He is currently starring for Polonia Bytom in Poland.

Ben Webster, former junior who left to join Newcastle United's academy from Under 9's through to senior reserve side. He left Newcastle to play in Sweden with VSK Futbol, making 48 appearances and scoring 4 goals between 2006-2008. Ben then returned to Alnwick Town for a short spell before joining Mypa-47 in the Finnish league until the end of 2010. Then followed Charleroi Olympique in 2011, and he is now in Bangkok starring for Rajpracha FC.

FORMER TOWN captain Martin Butterworth returned to the RGPS with a Boxing Day goal to deny Town another two promotion points.

Fanning's starting XI showed two changes from the draw at Tow Law ten days earlier. Emson was back up front in place of Ian Smurthwaite, while recent signing Jon Burton was given his first start for the club at left back in place of Stephen Banks.

On a pitch that did not lend itself to good football, it was the visitors who were given the perfect start. Less than five minutes were on the clock when Steve Allison saw his effort deflected onto the crossbar by Steve Craggs and Butterworth stooped to nod home from close range.

Town looked way off the pace in the opening period and the RA should have doubled their lead midway through the half. Allison again created the opportunity with a great run down the right but Louis Whensley fired over the top from 18 yards.

But it took almost 44 minutes for Town to finally create a chance of note. Emson whipped in a dangerous cross from the left but Gav Parkin failed to trouble RA goalkeeper Matt Calvert with a header from 6 yards.

Indeed it was only a fine double save from Craggs that prevented Fanning's side going in at the interval with a two goal deficit to pull back. He was out quickly to deny ex-Town forward Aaron Ramsbottom before keeping out Allison's follow up.

Grant Hickman almost headed Town level from a Pete Bulmer free kick within four minutes of the restart, but it was the introduction of Wayne Gredziak on the hour that finally made the difference. The former Durham City man saw a header tipped over the top by Calvert within seconds of coming on before Town finally drew level in the 66th minute.

Parkin released Emson down the left and he showed great strength to hold off the challenge from Andy Ramsbottom before producing a composed finish past Calvert from 12 yards.

The game really began to open up after that and both sides had chances to win it. Whensley shot straight at Craggs from 10 yards while RA substitute Jordan Hanratty then saw an effort deflected narrowly wide.

Meanwhile at the other end, Emson brought the best out of Calvert after Gredziak sent him clear down the left, before James Bowman, who had replaced the injured Parkin, saw an effort from 20 yards deflected narrowly wide by the RA 'keeper, while Chillingsworth fired wildly over in stoppage time.

TOWN ended 2012 with a disappointing defeat at new Division Two leaders Crook Town on Saturday.

With several players missing, Town failed to produce their best form and saw their 13 match unbeaten away record in the league - a run stretching back to March -brought to an end.

The Town starting XI saw three changes from the Boxing Day draw with Darlington RA. Leading scorer Adam Emson, Stephen Butterworth and Marcus Laing were all unavailable so Stu Dunn, Ian Smurthwaite and Wayne Gredziak all came in.

Crook, who came into the game on the back of an 11 match winning run, got off to the perfect start when Chris Wallace headed home at the second attempt after just 16 minutes.

With very little to choose between the sides, the first goal was always going to be crucial and that was how it proved. Town were forced to chase the game after that but they rarely looked like saving their unbeaten away record.

Manager Mark Fanning brought on York City Academy graduate Chris Dickinson for Carl Chillingsworth on the hour in an attempt shake up the Town attack but it failed to have the desired effect.

Town did come close to an equaliser midway through the second half when Gav Parkin rattled the crossbar from 20 yards.

That proved to be the turning point as Crook sealed the points, and a club record12th consecutive victory, when Kyle Davis headed home a left wing cross from Dave Gordon in the closing stages.

"If Gav's effort had gone in, then it would have been a different story," said manager Mark Fanning at the whistle.

"Our game plan was not to concede an early goal, but they were quicker and sharper than us today."

TOWN began 2013 as they ended 2012, with a disappointing away defeat, this time against a hard working Brandon United side on Saturday.

The starting XI showed two chances from the previous weekend's 2-0 defeat at Crook Town. Steve Banks replaced Stu Dunn at left back while James Bowman replaced the suspended Wayne Gredziak.

Meanwhile Alex Caisley was recalled to the squad and took his place on the bench alongside Dunn, Marcus Laing and Chris Dickinson.

Town dominated the early possession but the home sides’ work-rate meant that they were restricted to very few chances.

On 20 minutes Ian Smurthwaite's cross shot found Carl Chillingsworth 8 yards out, but the keeper produced a fine save to deny him.

The best chance of the first half came when Peter Bulmer's cross was not cleared and Jon Burton fired against the post from 12 yards.

But Town were rewarded just two minutes into the second period. There looked to be no danger when the ball reached Chillingsworth who was running away from goal, but he expertly hooked the ball over his shoulder and into the far corner of the net -his 16th goal of the season.

But the lead lasted barely ten minutes. A cross was not cleared by the usually reliable Danny Shoulder and Glen Hendrix seized on the loose ball to fired across goalkeeper Steve Craggs to make it 1-1.

Worse was to follow on 70 minutes. A Town corner was cleared to the half way line but Burton was caught in possession and Andrew Blackburn raced clear before firing an unstoppable shot past Craggs to give his side the lead.

Laing and Dickinson were introduced in the closing stages but the hosts defended well and despite the ball spending much of the last 20 minutes in the Brandon half, Town created few clear cut chances and it finished 2-1.

"It was a totally unacceptable performance and attitude," said manager Mark Fanning. "Too many players were either not prepared to treat this game with thedesire and passion required or think they are better than they are. I have spent enough time defending them but that stops now.”

York City 3 Town 0North Riding Senior Cup Quarter Final

TOWN crashed out of the North Riding Senior Cup at York City but there was certainly no disgrace in the performance against a side who fielded 9 full time professionals.

Mark Fanning’s starting XI showed two changes from the weekend's disappointing defeat at Brandon. Goalkeeper James Briggs returned from injury in place of Steve Craggs, with Marcus Laing coming in for Jon Burton in midfield.

Meanwhile leading scorer Adam Emson, absent for the previous two matches, was back on the bench alongside Stu Dunn, Alex Caisley, Burton and goalkeeper Dean Hudson.

Despite being up against such an accomplished side, Town started well and for half an hour they gave as good as they got. Carl Chillingsworth might even had given them the boost of an early goal when he looked to have got on the end of a Gav Parkin corner, but defender Tom Allan just nicked the ball off his head at the crucial moment.

But it was the hosts who made the breakthrough after 34 minutes, although it was a goal gifted to them rather than one they created for themselves. Steve Banks' back-pass was a little short and Briggs slipped under pressure from John McGready, leaving the former Darlington man with a simple tap in.

And it was 2-0 five minutes later. Reece Kelly looked to be in an offside position when he ran onto Jon Challinor's through ball but the linesman kept his flag down and the speedy winger coolly slotted past Briggs from 18 yards.

With nothing to lose, Town came out for the second half looking to get more support to loan striker Chillingsworth and they should have found a way back into the tie five minutes after the restart. Hickman did well to head a Parkin free kick back across thegoal but James Bowman put his header wide from 6 yards.

Undeterred, Town continued to take the game to their more illustrious opponents and Pete Bulmer saw an effort scrambled off the line by the impressive Allan following another set-piece delivery from Parkin.

But the brave stand was over five minutes later. Kelly, who had been lively down the left all evening, whipped in another dangerous cross and McGready was on hand to stab home his second from close range.

Challinor then brought the best out of Briggs after a thrilling solo run, but 4-0 would have been harsh on a Town side who should take great pride from their performance.

ON THIS DAY – 19 January 1983By Mark Jones

This afternoon we turn the clock back thirty years to January 1983 and a LeagueCup quarter final that provided plenty of talking points.

Match of the Day

Tottenham Hotspur was undoubtedly one of the top cup sides in the country in the early 1980s.

May 1981 saw Ricky Villa's mazy run see off Manchester City to take the FA Cup to White Hart Lane (a man called Ricky scoring the goal to win the cup for Spurs –sounds like the stuff of the editor's dreams). May 1982 saw the Cup retained with victory over Queens Park Rangers in a season when Spurs also reached the League Cup Final. With both FA Cup Finals going to replays and two Charity Shield matches thrown in, they visited the Twin Towers seven times in less than 16 months between May 1981 and August 1982, and this before the days when semi finals were routinely played at Wembley.

By January 1983 Spurs were contemplating another final, safely through to the last eight of the League Cup and drawn at home to Second Division strugglers Burnley. Their form in the run up to the match was, however, a little shaky and they were probably glad to be at home. The period between 11 December and 3 January saw three comfortable home wins but three away defeats, part of a run of six away defeats in a row with no goals scored and 13 conceded which was only broken by a 1-1 draw at Luton Town on 15 January.

If Spurs' form was hit and miss, however, Burnley was a club in turmoil. Their season had actually started well, with seven points from their first three games, including a 4-1 win at Middlesbrough on the second Saturday which had been a reality check for Boro fans who were expecting their team to bounce straight back to the top flight after relegation.

Burnley were fourth after those first three games but it was generally downhill from there. Nine defeats in their next ten matches saw them slump to twentieth by mid November, a win and two draws lifted spirits, but then December saw five more consecutive defeats, leaving Burnley bottom of the league at the end of the year. The win at Ayresome Park remained their only away league victory.

During this time, however, cup form had been good. Bury and Middlesbrough were dispatched in the first two rounds of the League Cup (Burnley weren't Boro's favourite team that year) and the next two rounds fell in the middle of Burnley's November improvement, bringing a 2-1 win at Coventry City and a 3-2 home victory over Birmingham City, both First Division opponents.

January started well, with a 4-1 New Years Day home victory Sheffield Wednesday and a point from the home league game with (you guessed…) Boro, followed by an FA Cup 3rd Round victory over Carlisle United. On 15 January, however, four days before the Tottenham match, Burnley made the short journey to North West

neighbours Bolton Wanderers and lost 0-3 while Boro, who were fourth bottom, were drawing 1-1 at home to Sheffield Wednesday. The results left Burnley in deep trouble, nine points from safety, and proved to be the final straw. As the team boarded the coach to travel to London on the morning of 19 January manager Brian Miller was sacked.

The timing was curious, making such a major change just a few hours before a big cup quarter final and it looked like a case of damage limitation for the man given temporary charge, Frank Casper.

Adversity can, of course, pull a team together, and in the first half at White Hart Lane Burnley buckled down, put off field distractions aside and matched their illustrious opponents. Early in the second half, however, the inevitable happened. A long throw from the left was allowed right across the Burnley box and Terry Gibson hooked it home from the edge of the six yard box to put Spurs ahead.

Game over? Well, not quite. Ardiles made space for himself on the edge of the box but had his shot brilliantly saved by veteran Burnley goalkeeper Stevenson when set to double Spurs' advantage and it proved to be a turning point. On 65 minutes, Burnley won a corner on the right and when the ball was played into the box Graham Roberts headed it into his own net to put the visitors level.

Shortly afterwards, Spurs keeper Ray Clemence raced out of his goal to beat Burnley forward Hamilton to a through ball and after dribbling the ball to the wing he played his weak clearance straight to a yellow Burnley shirt. After handling the resulting chip outside his area Clemence was lucky to stay on the pitch for what would today no doubt be a red card offence, but Burnley extracted their own punishment. Brian Flynn flighted the free kick into the box and Hamilton stabbed it home from close range to put the second division side ahead.

Suddenly, the crowd of 30,771 started to sense that a shock away win might be on the cards. As Spurs pressed for an equaliser, they were increasingly at risk of a Burnley break. Sure enough, four minutes from time the Clarets got away down the right and the cross from the bye-line was deflected off both Roberts and Clemence and in for the visitors' third.

To rub salt into Spurs' wounds, in the last minute a long ball through the middle set Hamilton clear again and he finished with a crisp right footed shot from the edge of the area. 4-1 to Burnley and a glory glory night at White Hart Lane at the end of a dramatic and difficult day. (Editor’s note – sounds like a great result to me!)

Elsewhere

In the night's other League Cup Quarter Final, Manchester United swept aside Nottingham Forest 4-0 at Old Trafford. McQueen scored twice with Coppell and Robson adding the others in front of 44,413. Arsenal and Liverpool had booked their places in the semi finals on the Tuesday night with home wins against Sheffield Wednesday (1-0) (Editor’s note - Tony Woodcock scored the winner in a game I attended) and West Ham United (2-1) respectively.

Meanwhile, European Cup holders Aston Villa were in Wednesday night action against Cup Winners Cup holders Barcelona at the Nou Camp in the first leg of the European Super Cup. A Marcos Alonso goal after 52 minutes in front of 40000 gave the Spanish side a narrow advantage to take to Birmingham for the second leg.

None of our local teams were in midweek action, but all had played, of course, at the weekend. In the First Division, Sunderland had moved out of the relegation zone and up to fourth from bottom with a 2-0 home win over Aston Villa in front of 16052. Liverpool was ten points clear at the top of the table after a 1-0 win at West Bromwich Albion.

In Division Two, Boro stayed fourth bottom after their draw with Sheffield Wednesday. Leeds United, who had been relegated alongside Boro at the end of 1981-82 were making a slightly better fist of their attempt to bounce straight backand were 7th, on 35 points from 24 games after a 1-0 win at home to Grimsby Town before a modest Elland Road crowd of 13583. Newcastle United were 14th after losing 0-2 at second placed Queens Park Rangers, who moved to within four points of leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers, who drew 2-2 at Blackburn Rovers.

Lincoln City was three points clear at the top of the Third Division with a game in hand despite losing 1-2 at Wigan Athletic. Meanwhile, Darlington and Hartlepool United were both struggling in the Fourth Division's bottom six. Darlington were fourth bottom on 22 points from 24 games after drawing 1-1 at Rochdale, while Hartlepool were two points and two places better off having played a game more after losing 0-3 at Scunthorpe United on the Sunday.

York City was ninth after an encouraging 3-1 win from the long trip to Torquay United, while Hull City led the table after a 1-0 home victory over Bristol City.

The Wednesday morning newspaper headlines thirty years ago today were made by the release of the findings of the inquiry of Lord Franks' committee into the Falklands War. Much to the relief of Margaret Thatcher, her government was absolved from blame for not foreseeing the Argentinean invasion or preventing it. Amongst other findings, the committee held that the Argentine junta made the decision to invade at a very late stage and the Government had no advance warning from US intelligence.

In a further sign that this was still a potentially dangerous world, Soviet foreign minister Andrei Gromyko announced that while his nuclear disarmament talks with West German leaders had been positive, his country would not agree to total disarmament.

A lance corporal in the British Army, Philip Aldridge was jailed for four years for attempting to sell secrets to the Soviets and on a bad day for those in uniform Detective Constable John Jardine was charged with attempted murder over the shooting of Stephen Warldorf in London the previous week.

If you wanted to escape the troubles of the world with some retail therapy an automatic washing machine would set you back £279.99 in the Winter sales and a

fridge/freezer was £249.95. A Renault 5 motor car was £4,246 or, on a cheaper note, family tissues were 17p a pack, bath towels were £1.99 and as a wise precaution for the time of year, jump leads in case your Renault wouldn't start were a very reasonable 99p.

BBC1's Children's TV featured 1980s regulars Jackanory, Take Heart and John Craven's Newsround. Early evening entertainment included Dr Who and A Question of Sport with captains Bill Beaumont and Willie Carson. The later part of the evening featured Open All Hours and Dallas (with the hearing to overturn Jock's will), followed by Sportsnight, with Britain's heavyweight boxing prospect Frank Bruno.

ITV had Crossroads, This is Your Life and Coronation Street (Mike Baldwin took naughty Dierdre Barlow to a posh restaurant behind the back of her husband Ken), before a Midweek Sports Special later in the evening featuring the Spurs v Burnley football. BBC2 had One Man and His Dog and MASH while the relatively new Channel Four featured Brookside (with Damon Grant's sudden helpfulness at home arousing suspicion) and the film In Celebration.

If you preferred a film on the larger screen, movies on release included ET, Kentucky Fried Movie and Airplane II The Sequel. Meanwhile, in the music singles chart, Modern Romance were at five with Best Years of Our Lives, the lovable Keith Harris and Orville were at four with Orville's Song, Renee and Renato were at three with Save Your Love, David Essex was at two with A Winter's Tale and Phil Collins at number one with You Can't Hurry Love.

So that was January 1983. Now I wonder whether Ken ever found out about Mike and Dierdre?

STEPHEN CRAGGS - Age 25 (Goalkeeper) - Starting his third season at the club, Stephen’s previous clubs include Sunderland FC, Crook Town

and Darlington RA.

JAMES BRIGGS – Age 27 (Goalkeeper) – First season with the club having signed from Billingham Town, where he spent the last two seasons.

Briggsy was previously with Norton, where he was part of their promotion winning side.

DANIEL SHOULDER – Age 33 (Right Back/Centre Half) –Experienced defender now in his third season at the club. Player’s Player of the Year for the past two seasons and new Club

Captain, Danny’s previous clubs include Shildon, West Auckland and DarlingtonRA.

CRAIG WINTER – Age 28 (Centre Half) – The son of former Premier League referee Jeff, Craig is a very experienced defender who’s previous clubs

include Darlington FC, Bradford, Marske United, Bishop Auckland, and is now in his second spell at Northallerton.

GRANT HICKMAN – Age 21 (Centre Back/Right Back) –Signed from Darlington FC, Grant made his debut in the relegation season 2008/09. He

was the only ever-present in 2010/11 and was winner of Management Player of the Season that year.

ANTHONY ROBERTS – Age 33 (Defender) – Now in his second spell with Northallerton having signed this season from Marske United. ‘Basher’ is an

experienced defender who has played for Guisborough Town and Norton.

IAN SMURTHWAITE – Age 21 (Centre Midfield / Centre Half) – Tough tackling midfielder is now in his fourth season at the club. ‘Smurf’ returned to Northallerton last October, after

a short break in the USA. He had previously been at Darlington FC.

STEPHEN BUTTERWORTH – Age 22 (Centre Midfield) –Following a coaching stint in USA, Stephen is now in his second season with the club. Previous clubs include

Darlington FC and York St John’s.

WAYNE GREDZIAK – Age 32 (Striker) – Signed from Durham City this season, Wayne is a proven Northern League goalscorer. Previous clubs include Shildon and

Bishop Auckland, this is Wayne’s second spell at Northallerton.

CARL CHILLINGSWORTH –Age 36+ (Striker) – Veteran striker Chilli has played at Whitby Town, Bishop Auckland, Guisborough and Billingham Town, but every

time he leaves Northallerton, ‘Boomerang’ always comes back.

COLIN ANDERSON – Age 25 (Striker) – Starting his second spell with the club following a successful season in the Teesside League with Richmond Town, where he

finished as the league’s leading scorer.

SAM GRAINGER –(Defender) – Graduate of the Academy side, Sam has moved into the first team squad this season.

STEPHEN BANKS - Age 26 (Defender) – Signed this season having played first division football last season with Tow Law Tow. Former

clubs include Jarrow Roofing, Esh Winning and Chester-le-Street.

GAVIN PARKIN - Age 25 (Midfield / Striker) – Gav, a cultured midfield player, has previously played with Darlington, Bishop Auckland,

Consett and Norton & Stockton Ancients.

STUART DUNN – (Full-back) - Promising young full-back in his second season of senior non-league football after impressing in the Teesside League with the Academy

side.

NATHAN HEMINGBROUGH – Age 22 (Midfield) – Nathan is in his first full season having moved up from the Academy side last season. Was a member of the Ernest

Armstrong Cup winning squad.

ALEX CAISLEY – Age 22 (Midfield) – Another to come through the Academy side and also part of the cup winning squad, Alex was previously with West

Auckland.

MARCUS LAING - Age 26 (Midfield) – Signed this season from Thornaby, who he joined from BillinghamTown. Marcus was also a

member of the Norton promotion winning side.

ADAM EMSON – Age 28 (Striker) – Proven first division goal-scorer, Adam signed this season from Stokesley. His previous clubs

include Thornaby, Shildon and Consett.

JAMES BOWMAN - Age 25 (Full-back) - Now in his second spell with the club after a spell with Hallem FC. Originally with Town in 2009-10, James

previously played for Darlington RA

DAVID ALDERSON – Age 26 (Midfield/Defence) - 'Aldo' is a solid and intelligent defender or defensive midfielder who also brings with him experience of promotion from the second division in his time at Norton. Previous clubs include Darlington RA and Norton & Stockton Ancients.

PETER BULMER – Age 22(Winger) – Popular winger rejoined the club recently after spells at Consett and Norton. Previously played for Coxhoe

Athletic.

JONATHAN BURTON – Age 19 (Defender) – Left-sided player Jon, is son of former Town boss Paul and can play in either defence or midfield.

now starting his fourth full season in charge. Mark previously managed at Ferryhill Athletic, Willington and Horden.

MARTIN COLLINS – Age 47 (Assistant Manager) – Agreed to take up the role at the start of the 2009/10 season, the clubs Statto is also qualified to cover the physio role. Previous

clubs include Hurworth and Crook Town as a player and Darlington All Stars as coach.
