NorthallertonSchool!

Welcome toWe have received the exciting news that you will be joining our school community as a Year 7 student in September. We know that life has been very different recently; however, we hope you have had a chance to think about what secondary school will be like. It will be exciting for some of you and a very anxious time for others. We’ve created this ‘Moving Up Guide’ just for you and all the other students, like you, who are joining us in September.

Whether you are moving up with lots of friends or you are the only person coming from your school, don’t worry! Our Moving Up Guide will help answer lots of your questions about moving to Northallerton School & Sixth Form College – what to expect and what you’ll need. It might be

your home and have a chat about it too. If you still have questions, we’re here to answer them. You or your parents or carers can email our Primary Transition Co-ordinator, Mr Myers, at: [email protected].

We are really looking forward to meeting you and ensuring you become an integral part of our school community.

For now, good luck with your return to primary school and enjoy your remaining special weeks.

We’ll see you soon. From all staff at,

Northallerton School & Sixth Form College.

Throughout Northallerton School, every learner and member of staff is part of a house

and forms a community within the wider school. We strongly believe that this provides learners with an increased sense of belonging.

We have four houses, all named after former students: Boakes, Cowell, Radcliffe and Chapman.

BoakesNamed after Becca Boakes, a karate champion who, at 17, became the European champion.

CowellNamed after Sylvester Cowell who was in the Merchant Navy. He was killed when his ship, the S.S.T.R. Thompson was torpedoed in the First World War.

RadcliffeNamed after John Radcliffe who was a doctor and, later, a politician. The Radcliffe Camera, a famous library in Radcliffe Square in Oxford and the John Radcliffe Hospital, also in Oxford, are named after him.

ChapmanNamed after Hannah Chapman

Northern Echo.

Cashless CateringHow do I pay for my snacks and lunches?

We operate a Cashless Catering system which means that you don’t pay for your break time snacks or lunches at the tills using cash. Payment for meals can all be made online using ParentPay or using the Pay Point facility.

To reduce the amount of money held on school premises, ParentPay is our online payment service and the preferred method of payment for items such as dinner money and school trips. Using a secure website your parent or carer is able to pay online using their credit/debit card.

Each student that joins Northallerton School & Sixth Form College is provided with a unique username and password which your parent or carer will be prompted to change upon initial login. Once they have activated their account they can make online payments straight away.

If you would prefer to continue to pay for school meals in cash, you can request a PayPoint Card from school or make payments via the Reval machine in school. To search for your nearest PayPoint centre, please visit consumer.paypoint.com and enter your postcode.

Paypoint payments* are recorded alongside online payments in ParentPay, and account balances can be checked online in exactly the same way.

(*Please allow up to 36 hours for your payment to be creditedvia the PayPoint network).

Hear from ourstudents...

“I enjoyed the tasks we did in Induction Week, especially the rocket project as it was fun

and gave me the chance to meet new people and work as a team. I was nervous at first as there were lots of new people, but I guess

really it was good as I'm still with them.”

Cole, Year 7

“Don’t worry about getting lost, everyone is really friendly and will help you. I came to school on my own with no one else from my primary school, I was very nervous but have made some

really good friends.”Brogan, Year 7

“It might seem that the school is big, but after a week or two you soon know where everything is. The base coaches

are very helpful.”

Edward, Year 7

Hear from ourparents and carers...

“I want to thank you for my daughter’s parents’ evening. I found all the teachers engaging, professional and positive. They all seemed to know my daughter as an individual and gave

constructive feedback.”

“May I just pass on our sincere thanks for all the sustained hard

work you have put in over the time my daughter has been at your

school. She has thrived there and we know she will go onto further enjoy and progress her learning as she moves onto A Level studies.”

ChromebooksWe would like all of our new Year 7 students in September 2020 to have a portable laptop computer called a Chromebook leased from school. Students who sign up will be issued with a named Chromebook. The students will bring their Chromebooks into school each day so that they can be used in lessons. They will take them home every evening, weekend and holiday to help with their independent study. At school the

We have been using Chromebooks for the past year and found them to be an invaluable educational tool. The students found that they not only made independent and research tasks easier, they also found that they were much more motivated and enjoyed working more. Teachers have found that using Chromebooks makes it easier to increase the breadth and variety of learning tasks. Parents have been pleased that the Chromebooks are user-friendly, robust and easy to use, they have also commented on the students’ increased motivation. We have clear rules in school about how and when the Chromebooks are to be used and the students are very clear about how to use them sensibly and effectively.

The Chromebooks will be leased to the students for a cost of around £10 per month for 36 months. At the end of the lease period the Chromebook becomes yours. This cost gives the student exclusive use of their Chromebook and also includes an insurance policy which provides cover for all breakdowns, damage, loss and theft.

Please visit our website www.northallertonschool.org.uk

under ‘Curriculum’ ‘Chromebook Scheme’. Here you will

frequently asked questions. We will inform you when the portal will be opened for you to sign up should you wish to. Should you have any further questions, we would be happy to answer these for you. Please contact Miss Cox via email on [email protected]

Many of you will have completed the Transition Activity, we would love to see what you have done. If you have done it on a computer, you can email it to us at [email protected], if you have made or drawn

or written something, perhaps you can take a picture and email it to us? Don’t worry if you can’t email us with it, just keep what you have done

safe and we will see it when you come into school.
