A momentous occasion took place last week, with the release of 26 red kites in Newbridge House. After an absence of several hundred years, red kites will soon be gliding over the fields and woods across the North County. Minister for the Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan T.D., released the first batch of birds from aviaries in a secluded wood within the demesne. The kites, which were collected under licence from wild nests in Wales were released in the public park and a further 13 young kites will be released shortly from a private location in the north of the county. In order to maximise the potential for an expanding Red Kite population in Ireland, it was decided to release 39 red kites in the North County area and establish a satellite population half way between the red kite populations in County Wicklow and County Down. It is expected that this project will be a welcome addi- tion to the rich and varied natural heritage in North County Dublin and that sightings of these graceful and colourful birds will further enhance the local community’s appreciation of their nearby amenities and wildlife. All the kites released here and also those released in Down and Wicklow over the years have been sourced in Wales from wild young kites. “I have great hopes that the release of these red kites here today, will lead to a situation in a number of years where we will have a viable, sustainable and enjoyable population of red kites,” said Minister Deenihan. Mr Hans Visser, Biodiversity Officer, stated that “the County Council are very happy to work with the Golden Eagle Trust and facilitate the Red Kite project at Newbridge Demesne and the restora- tion of this majestic bird to our countryside”. The project has been supported by representatives of the local Irish Farmers Association (IFA) and the National Association for Regional Game Councils (NARGC). All the birds were attached with a small radio transmitter, each with a unique frequency, and small PVC wing tags. These devices allow the project team and the public to locate and identify each individual bird. It was decided at the outset to release the birds in or near to busy public parks, even though this may have run the risk of the birds being disturbed or found during the very sensitive captive phase. The Golden Eagle Trust would like to reassure the people of the North County that now that the birds have been released, they intend to open the Red Kite project up to the public and their local media as much as possible by regular media updates, educational activ- ities, project website reports and public talks. North County Dublin and adjoining counties offers ideal red kite foraging and breeding habitat. Red Kites primarily feed in farmland areas and nest in mature trees. Experience amongst the farming and shooting interests in Wales over the last century prove that the rather light weight kite is not a threat to livestock or game birds. The decision will be revealed next month. Excitement has been building over the past few weeks as residents and business owners alike await a positive outcome. This outcome will bring commer- cial life to our region, not only in Swords but to the entire North County. There are many positive reasons why the Metro North should absolutely go ahead, all of which were published in past editions of the County Leader. Speaking to the County Leader , Lorraine Sutton from the Swords Community Council says that the council continue to push harder than ever to ensure the project will go ahead: “The project is vital for Swords and everyone in the North County and absolutely must go ahead,” she said. Pressure will continue to be placed on local minister Leo Varadkar, who will ulti- mately decide whether this vital project goes through or not. Cllr Coppinger (SP) said: “We would like to meet with the Minister to really emphasise our case for the Metro North. We will be looking to put across the point of the project being a good economic investment and will be also reminding him of his pre-election promise to have Metro North delivered, a feature of his campaign poster.” The Metro North will create an initial 6,000 jobs- 4,000 in the construction phase with 2,000 indirect jobs following. According to the economic plan for the project, a further 25,000 to 37,000 jobs will then be created locally over the next decade. ResidentsVulnerableWithout Rangers

Residents who visit Swords TownPark and River Valley Park areleft in a vulnerable state, thanksto the recent withdrawal of thePark Rangers. The parks are nowunsupervised with gates to bothbeing left open 24 hours a day.According to Cllr EuguneCoppinger (SP), “this will lead toadded anti-social behaviour andreduce the safety and security ofpeople using the parks.”The council have recentlyrejected these claims, however

evidence of this safety issue wasbrought to light, as it wasreported that a young girl wasrecently attacked in RivervalleyPark. This terrible attack mayhave been avoided, had therebeen adequate supervision at thepark. Speaking to the CountyLeader, Lorriane Sutton fromSwords Community Council, saysthere has to be an alternative dueto the dismissal of the Rangers:“What we want to know is,what’s the alternative plan? Whoor what is being put in place toensure that residents or visitorswill be safe?.”“The parks absolutely cannot beleft unattended and we’ll becalling on the county council toact on this,” she said.

IRISH people traditionally invest a greatdeal of thought into how they deal withthe difficulties of bereavement; they setgreat store in paying suitable tribute asthey seek out carefully the appropriate fu-neral service for their beloved relative. Our attitude to bereavement is often in-formed by a blend of culture, history andspiritual legacy but also by the rapidlychanging needs of our contemporary soci-ety.

Stafford’s new Funeral Home in Port-marnock has been open for over sixmonths now; this newest branch reflect-ing Stafford’s Funeral Directors long-standing service with deep strong roots ofNorth Dublin city and its surrounds.

A key component of Stafford’s profes-sional hallmark is the ability to uphold allthat is appropriate and dignified about tra-ditional service while moving progres-sively to accommodate social change inliving habits – Stafford’s at the NorthStrand for example is synonymous inmost people’s mind with a well estab-lished reliable family firm.

Stafford’s of Portmarnock is also in-dicative of how, since the 1940’s, expan-sion in this leading Dublin FuneralDirectors has progressed in a mannerwhich is calm, measured and timely, suit-ably reflective of the slow and timelypace of a gentle funeral procession. Geo-graphically, the same story applies.Stafford’s of Maypark in Donnycarneywas opened in 1981 to mirror the moder-nity of a new era in the rapidly expandingnorth suburbs. Maypark continues toserve the communities of Donnycarney,Artane, Killester, Marino, Clontarf, Ra-heny, Coolock, large parts of Beaumontand beyond.

Portmarnock takes the journey to adifferent level. After over 20 years as aFuneral Director, Jonathan Stafford re-searched into the benefits of building anew state-of-the art funeral home in Port-marnock. While North Strand and May-park are still upheld as crucial locationsin Dublin’s demographic make-up, theinclusion of Portmarnock into Stafford’sprofessional service offers additional op-

Portmarnock was designed with di-versity in mind for our modern times.Stafford’s can offer many and varied op-tions – for small intimate funeral gather-ings, the chapels can be seamlesslyinterchanged to suit, and likewise ex-panded. Many people have been drawnto Portmarnock for humanist and non-re-ligious funeral services along with tradi-tional Christian funerals - familiesopting for Masses or Prayer Services de-pending on the different religious de-nominations. While the professionalteam at Stafford’s place great emphasison being able to cater for any type of be-reavement service, all of their funeraltributes are unified by certain essentialelements – consistent high quality, adeeply held spirit of community service, and ongoing mindfulness about cost andbudget, especially relevant today.Jonathan describes how the new ameni-ties at Portmarnock reflect Stafford’s Fu-neral Director’s ethos about cost and

budget. ‘This building has an air ofspace and elegance and deciding to holda funeral here will not cost one euromore than a more regular venue. I can-not stress that enough. In fact, our cost-ing procedure involves the bereavedfamily at a deep level, because we offerso many budgetary options that the fam-ily has a major input into deciding howmuch a funeral will cost. Funerals canbe inexpensive or costly, it depends onthe family, so don’t hesitate to call onthe experts – a good Funeral Director

will always be able to help you shaveoff unnecessary cost.’

Somebody once also defined theessence of a good funeral director as theability to project into the future so thatthe grieving family can be truly presentin the here and now, free to reflect andfocus on their departed loved one.Stafford’s, in providing all the new fa-cilities at their Portmarnock branch, cancertainly offer the bereaved family thesolace of some time out to pay suitabletribute to their loved one.

tions to families all over North Dublin, including Portmarnock, Malahide, Kin-sealy, Baldoyle, Sutton, Howth, Don-aghmede, Bayside, Clontarf, Raheny, andbeyond.

Reflecting on the first six months ofarranging funerals at Portmarnock offersthe team at Stafford’s some very interest-ing insights into what families need atdifficult times of loss and trauma. Needsand requirements differ depending on thefamily in question, says Jonathan.

During the first months of service, certain patterns emerged. Some familieschose Portmarnock on the basis of its spa-ciousness and ample car parking, as theyneeded to accommodate large crowds offriends and relatives – some opting tohold the entire funeral service at Port-marnock, incorporating Removal and Fu-neral Mass in the very large chapel ofrepose followed by the funeral processionto a local graveyard or crematorium.

Portmarnock also proved a suitablevenue for other families for whom accessto the national road network was crucial.Portmarnock is ideal in this respect, inclose proximity to the M50 & the M1while simultaneously located against thetranquil coastal backdrop of PortmarnockTidal Estuary.

L ove it or hate it, it’s almost time to wave goodbye to the breezy summer holidays and startgetting ready for a new school year. Getting the new school year off to a good start can influ-ence your children’s attitude, confidence, and performance both socially and academically.

The transition from August to September can be difficult for both children and parents. Even chil-dren who are eager to return to class must adjust to the greater levels of activity, structure, andpressures associated with school life. The degree of adjustment depends on the child, but parents can help their children manage theincreased pace of life by planning ahead, being realistic, and maintaining a positive attitude. Hereare a few suggestions to help ease the transition and get the school year off to a great start:

Keep Track Of The Essentials Review the material sent by the school as soonas it arrives. These packages include importantinformation about your child’s teacher, schoolsupply requirements, sign ups for after-schoolsports and activities, school calendar dates, bustransportation, health and emergency forms, and volunteering opportunities.

Mark Your CalendarMake a note of important dates, especiallyback-to-school nights. This is especially impor-tant if you have children in more than oneschool and need to juggle obligations.

Buying SchoolUniformsBuy only what you have to from the officialuniform store. Many schools have an “official”uniform store, but they vary as to how insistentthey are that parents shop there. These shopscan be very expensive. You can usually get somevery reasonable ‘back to school’ clothing offersat shops all around the North County.

Thornton Hall PrisonGets The Go AheadMinister for Justice, Equality andDefence, Alan Shatter recentlypublished the Thornton Hall ReviewGroup Report. It means that the newprison is set to go ahead asplanned, thus dashing any lingeringhopes the local residents committeemay have harboured to the contrary. The Minister confirmed that theGovernment has approved theReport’s recommendations. “I verymuch welcome the Government’sdecision to accept, in principle, therecommendations detailed in the

Report,” he said. The timeframe forthe Thornton Hall project asoutlined in the Report will bediscussed in the autumn in thecontext of the Government’s discus-sions on capital spending prioritiesfor 2012.” It stresses the need toimprove prison regimes and condi-tions and to provide in-cell sanita-tion. It recommends that a newprison, with 300 cells capable ofaccommodating 500 prisoners bedeveloped at Thornton Hall. TheMinister also announced that theGovernment has decided to abolishthe Prisons Authority (Interim)Board, which was set up in 1998.

Different Bus TravelExperience In DublinTo go by bus inIreland is a verydifferent experiencethan in Germany. On the one hand, itcan be very frustratingto go by bus in Irelandbecause it’s always

late and then twocome at once. Withoutschedules at most busstations, I have toknow which bus totake at which t imebefore the journeystarts, because it ’s

impossible to f ind out later-on.Nevertheless, manymore people go bybus here than inGermany. But on the other hand, the frequency ofbuses arriving is muchhigher and there arespecial bus laneswhich is definitely anadvantage. For me,it’s funny to see thatthe buses are thefastest vehicles in thecity centre, especially

during the rush-hour,because it’s the otherway round in

Germany. In the end,the journey is morecomfortable on Irish

buses because ofextra space forluggage and nice

cushioned seats, so Iarrive much morerelaxed.

BrilliantDay ForBalbrigganThe recent Balbriggan Fun Fest Day, whichfeatured a number of pedal car races throughthe town, has been hailed as a major triumph. The initiative, which took place on Sunday, 24thJuly last, also included free family fun and enter-tainment, was the brainchild of Ian Lawless,Chairman of the Balbriggan Formula Fun. Hewas ably assisted by the Balbriggan Chamber ofCommerce, as well as Balbriggan Town Council. The fun filled day was packed with atmosphereand excitement from the word go. It had the fullsupport of the entire town and this wasreflected in the outstanding estimated atten-dance figure of 3,500. This, by any standard, is aringing endorsement of the commitment ofBalbriggan’s residents to pull together and showwhat a spirited lot they are. All the organisationsmanaged to pull together in an extraordinarydisplay of community spirit, which has drawnpraise for near and far. Younger kids in particular, had a ball and showed a great sense of anticipa-tion and skill as they jockeyed for position attight corners. You could taste the atmosphere, which never waned on the day. Surely a terrificachievement by the organisers. A very proud Ian Lawless spoke to the CountyLeader about the dedication of those who weregiven the task of ensuring the success of the day.“Anthony Murphy from the Balbriggan Chamberbrought all of his extensive business acumen tobear and this ensured that the shop fronts in thetown were beautifully presented and bargainswere available to keen shoppers. Brian Murrayfrom the Balbriggan Town Council was acomplete workhorse and left no stone unturnedto ensure the success of the day. Both men areworthy of particular mention,” said Lawless. The town resembled something from the Tour deFrance, with all hands packed tightly on the foot-

paths cheering on the participants in each race. This wonderful atmosphere was greatlyenhanced by the excellent PA system, with AlisonComyn giving a continuous commentary on theprogress of the participants. Ian Lawless alsospoke of the unsung heroes of the day, peoplelike Ray Nugent was got up in the middle of thenight to ensure that roads were closed off andhanging baskets were well watered. He alsomentioned Seamus Murphy for the use of hisstorage facilities. “It could not have happenedwithout the support of our local retailers and ourbrilliant sponsors,” he said. The main sponsors of the event were MoriartySuperValu, Hamilton Park Nursing Home, NorthCounty Leader Newspaper, Balbriggan CreditUnion and Bridgestone Tyres. Other sponsorswho contributed to the success of the dayinclude, Goldsmith Jewellers, BalbrigganChamber of Commerce, Balbriggan Town Council,Fingal County Council, Aidan Bissett, who spon-sored the kiddies’ karts, Molly’s Coffee Gallery, who provided refreshments for volunteers on theday, The Coffee Pot, who sponsored the facepainting, Apache Pizza, Foras na nGaeilge,Harry’s Hire, Pac-On Waste, Mark Halligan, EricCampbell of Walking Catastrophe Productions,Gallen Alliance, Balbriggan.net andBalbriggan.infoAnthony Murphy spoke about a ‘tremendous feelgood factor all around the town, with bouncycastles and entertainment by Brush Shields. Thebuzz word in all of this is FREE. Because of thegenerosity of our sponsors, we were able toprovide all of this for free.” Special mention wasmade to the contribution of local CommunityGardai, Dave Sheeran, Kate Daly Ní Bhrion andInspector Jacinta Harley, who gave great supportto the day.One of the highlights of the day for Ian Lawlesswas when a lady approached him with her son inhis wheelchair, said that her son, who is madabout motorbikes in particular, had the best dayever. Anthony Murphy said that there were busi-ness people from surrounding towns who want tobe involved in future events. They want to holdheats for this event in their own towns, with thefinal being held in Balbriggan. It looks like theBalbriggan Formula Fun committee have struckgold. Home Study Opportunity Pitman Training in Swords are expanding their distancelearning centre course range, due to demand. Nowpeople from rural areas, or those with childcare, healthor transport problems can have the benefit of access tothe sort of courses usually only available in big cities.Maria Lalor, MD of the Swords centre, said: “We havebeen staggered by the amount of people who want tostudy at home. It’s more suitable for people for variousreasons, but I think the present economy is forcingpeople to rethink a lot of things. Studying at homesaves the cost of transport, parking, childcare, buyinglunch out, etc.” “In the past home study colleges wereassociated with poor quality courses, but technologyadvances have revolutionised home study. This meansthat people can study at home exactly the same as theywould have studied in the centre. Pitman TrainingSwords are located in North Street, Swords, or atwww.pitmantrainingswords.ie.

As the sun shines through thegentle breeze of a June morning, Dominicaconfirms that she loves her job on days likethis, “ah yeah, yeah I do…,” she says, seca-teurs in hand, dead heading and pruningplants as we stroll along. Was Dominica always interested in gardening?“Well I suppose from when I was about nine or ten.I got my love of gardening from my mother,” shereplies. She describes her garden at her home inBalbriggan as being ‘alright’, undoubtedly anunderstatement. “Once it’s dry I’m out in thegarden! I also look after the garden at home inCounty Louth.”She has been working at Ardgillan ‘for more than 15years’. “The staff move around between SkerriesMills and Ardgillan Castle depending on what needsto be done and it varies from day to day. There’salways something to be done,” she laughs. While responsible for organising her team,Dominica also does much of the actual gardeningherself. “Well the lads would hammer in the canes, but I tie things up as I go along. Sometimes we havestudents on work placement from the BotanicGardens to help, but this year weonly had them fora short while inthe spring. We dovery little weedinghere, we just hoethe ground andloosen the clay awee bit before theweeds come up,”she says making itsound extremelyeasy! “I don’tthink weeding is aterrible job at all,”she laughs as shepulls a few strag-glers out of thecolourful herba-ceous border. One of the firstgardens we walkthrough houses the National Potentilla Collection, containing 240 varieties of this shrubby, sometimes‘woody’ looking plant. Some of the plants are fromEngland and some from North America, as well asnative Irish species that grow freely in areas such asthe Burren. “A guy from Scotland has varieties ontrial here to pick out the really good ones, whichhe’ll then name and put into commercial markets.”Each of the gardens has its own distinct featurewith the trellis garden, having a garden museumand sundial as fixtures in its midst. The apple vari-eties growing in this garden date as far back as‘Blood of the Boyne’ which was cultivated about1600, to ‘Clearheart which dates back to the 1950s.The smell from the scree beds in this garden area iswonderful, especially from a plant I read as ‘azurebeauty’, but Dominica calls ‘Erigeron.’ “Do you absorb the Latin names because of yourlove of plants?” I ask. “Ah sure you acquire thenames as you go along, I’d know the Latin names ofwhat we have but the world of plants is infinite! The roses have mostly English names, such asArthur Bell and Country Man, a new rose,” she says. Dominica walks me through the walled cottagegarden which has 20 alcoves, purpose built for thegrowing of fruit. The fruit wall is home to peaches, pears and nectarines, and cherries, currants andraspberries flourish elsewhere. The array is aston-ishing and Dominica explains that there’s noproblem growing fruit in Ireland “but figs, whichtake one year in a warmer climate take two here.” The walled garden was originally a Victorian styled

kitchen garden and while Dominica rues the factthere’s not much surviving historical data detailinglife in Ardgillan Castle, the life of the garden mirrorslife in Ireland at various stages throughout history.

“The original walled garden dates back to 1822when it was just one acre but it was extendedbetween 1821 and 1861, which would have includedthe time of the Famine.” This had the dual effect ofproviding local employment, as advocated by thePublic Works Scheme and also providing fruit andvegetables for those living on the estate. Thewalled garden today also includes a vegetable andherb section. A regular visitor to Ardgillan, who Dominica loves tosee arrive is Reggie Irwin. Reggie lived in a cottageon the estate until he was 18, leaving in about 1957.“His father was the gardener but he died in 1947and then Reggie’s mother took over the gardens. He can remember where stuff was planted when hewas here. Although his memories are only from acertain period of time, they help give a pottedhistory of the gardens.”The iconic Victorian glasshouse in the rosegarden is a MacKenzie & Moncur design, similarto that in the Botanic Gardens. It dates back to

1880 when it wasbuilt in the homeof the Jamesonfamily atS e a m o u n t ,Malahide. “In themid 1990’s, theCounty Councilremoved it,reconstructed itand placed ithere completelyr e p a i r e d , ”D o m i n i c aexplains. Thecurve at thebottom of thepanes of glassallows rain to runfreely down thecentre. Lookinginside there is an

abundance of tomatoes and grapes growing, andshe laughs at my incredulity at grapes growing inIreland, “inside it’s no problem at all!”When she leaves work, Dominica spends much ofher personal time surrounded by plants andflowers. A keen photographer, she smiles saying“my photographs are mainly of flowers too! Imight take pictures of my sister’s kids, but it’spretty much flowers.” She is on the committee ofthe Balbriggan Horticultural Society and regularlyprovides advice to local groups such asSustainable Skerries and GIY (Grow it Yourself)scheme. On the day we meet there are lots ofchildren around Ardgillan enjoying their end ofyear school tour. “It’s great fun for kids,”Dominica says. “They can get dressed up inperiod costume and do a tour of the Castle. They’re well catered for with acres of wide openspace to run around in and Ardgillan’s ‘Bigfoot’ (alovely big fella) can be seen and chased throughthe woods, adding to the excitement.” “We want people to come and visit us. We’re

wheelchair accessible and the gardens, play-ground, car park and art exhibitions are all free. You only have to pay for a tour of the castle or acup of coffee, but you can enjoy your coffeesitting at a sheltered table overlooking a rosegarden.” Extremely easy company, as I leave Dominica toreturn to her work, I realise that the gardens atArdgillan Castle reflect a large part of who she is.When I tell her that a friend of mine recentlycommented that ‘the person who looks afterthese gardens obviously loves their job’,Dominica smiles saying “ah well, yeah, I thinkshe’s right.”

Clubbers decided it was time to return to an

old favourite this week. We were thrilled to

make our way back to Home in Balbriggan.

There were friendly faces and warm

welcomes from the entire crowd; and all,

delighted to see us since last time. It was a

full house from early on in the night with the

Dj playing great tunes, over arguably the

best sound system in the North County. With

everyone up dancing under spectacluar

lighting, it seemed like the night would never

end. We hope to get back to this hotspot

soon. It truly is the the hub of Balbriggan.
