These figures caused much concern and confu- sion to workers and customers of Ulster Bank branches and outlets in the North County, where the bank has a significant presence. This will come as a relief to staff employed by Ulster Bank at it’s five North County facilities. The County Leader contacted Ulster Bank in an effort to find out if the jobs of workers the branches in Swords, Cloghran and Malahide were in any danger. The reply was that there would be “no new job losses as part of this.” It continued, “Ulster Bank has already announced and is implementing a programme to reduce full time employee head count by 950 across the business. We believe that, taking account the 950 reductions announced in early 2012, the remaining decrease in head count should be met through natural attrition over the remaining course of the strategic plan. We continue to keep our costs under review. The locations of the affected branches have not been confirmed.” The County Leader also contacted a spokesperson for the Irish Bank Officials Association (IBOA). Séamas Sheils, who is IBOA’s Communications Manager. He main- tains that the initial figure of 1,800 job losses was “grossly exaggerated”. He claimed, “Part of the problem comes from grossly inflated figures which the bank’s boss used in a speech in Edinburgh to a particular audience, to make it look like drastic action was being taken to reverse the bank’s fortunes. Most of the job losses and natural attrition losses have already taken place. We are not entirely clear about the figures being bandied about by Ulster Bank, but we feel they are greatly inflated,” he said. When asked if any of the local branches in the North County would be affected, he said he could not speculate on their future, as affected locations have yet to be named,” the statement ended. Ulster Bank is a significant player in the local economy and is continuing to provide a vital service for it’s client base in the North County. The fact that the company’s statement confirmed that no new job losses are part of the bank’s strategy is a relief to staff and customers alike. Relief As Bank Says No Job Losses A long overdue memorial for people lost at sea, is about to be erected in Skerries. The monument is in the form of a Sea Pole and will be located at the bandstand at Red Island. Locals will remember the original Sea Pole, which was removed about 10 years ago. The local authority built a new one to replace it, but it was never put in place, due to health and safety issues. It will now be reinstated in a safer area, as a memorial. The idea of the reinstating the Sea Pole as a memorial monument is the brainchild of Carl Duff, who is a well known businessman in Skerries. He told the County Leader, “Every maritime town in the country has a monu- ment to people who were lost at sea, but Skerries is a notable exception. My father, Tommy was lost at sea in Skerries in 1974. He was involved with the sailing club and the coastguard and actually lost his life in the process of saving someone. Luckily, his body was recovered and he have a grave to visit, but many Skerries families are not so lucky. This monument will provide these families with a place to visit and remember their loved ones. I feel it’s high time that this monument was sanctioned,” he said. The County Council are taking on the project and Carl and local designer, Shane Holland have come up with funding, but more is required. Initially there were obsta- cles placed in the way, and now there is plenty of support for the project locally. The Sea Pole will be familiar to many locals in Skerries, as it was formerly called the Monkey Pole, so called, because revellers leaving nearby pubs and the nightclub used to climb it. It was actually an Apparatus Pole, which was used by the Coastguard, where equipment like ropes and pulleys were stored, ready for use in the rescue of seafarers in trouble. It has now been modi- fied for the purposes of health and safety purposes,” said Carl. Names and details of people lost at sea will be recorded on the monument. Carl is busy making plates which will be placed around the Sea Pole. Each person’s name, the name of the boat and the date of the tragedy will be recorded on each individual brass plate for all to see. He already has 271 tragic events at sea recorded. Speaking with theCounty Leader, resi-dent’s committeemember, PatriciaLambert said; “Itstarted with ussending letters to resi-

The three projects come with a pricetag of about €250,000 and the Council said it is readyto award tenders for the projects, if funding issecured. Kinsealy Residents’Concerns Ignored

The decision of the County Council to grantpermission for a pathway from Russell’s Terrace, off Kettle’s Lane in Kinsealy, to connect with anexisting pathway, has caused outrage amongresidents in the area. Residents are fearful thatthe new pathway could bring young children in

contact with a slipway that brings traffic to thenearby motorway. However, it is the fact that residents of the estatefeel that they are being ignored and discrimiatedagainst, that hurts the most.Resident, Suzanne Coughlan claimed that resi-dents in the area were not consulted, simplybecause they are tenants and not house owners. She told the County Leader, “A consultationmeeting was held, where home owners were

invited, but not tenants. I tried to join theResidents Association, but was told I could not doso because I was a tenant, not a home owner.”“We had no say whatsover in what decisions weremade. We feel discriminated against and it’s anabsolute disgrace that our voices have not beenheard. The pathway will cause a hazard foryounger children who can wander on to theslipway, with disastrous consequences. Thepathway will lead to Airside, but nobody wantsit,” she said. The estate is equally dividedbetween home owners and tenants.Another resident, Fred Jones said, “he construc-

tion company decided, without any consulta-tion, to locate their siteoffice and machinerydepot right in front ofmy house. It’sabsolutely infuriatingthat we are beingtotally ignored and Iwant the site movedimmediately,” he saidangrily. The group held ameeting with localcouncillor, EoghanO’Brien (FF) who toldthe County Leader, “Ihave been in touch withthe County Councilabout making sure that

the genuine concerns of the residents are beingheard and that the work, which has alreadystarted, is not interfering with the residents.Thelocal authority has given me an assurance thatwork will not commence before 8am and willfinish at 5.00pmThe County Leader contacted the managementcompany, Circle Voluntary Housing Association, which handles issues which tenants may have, but they did not reply.

Local Groups UrgedTo Come ForwardLocal Councillor, Tom O’Leary (FG), following a recentmeeting with the County Council, is delighted to informthe County Leader that significant progress is beingmade on a proposed plan for a skate park inBalbriggan. “We must invest in the youth in Balbrigganand give them suitable areas for popular sport ofskateboarding”. “Young people are currently usinglocations not suitable for this sport, such as IndustrialUnits in Industrial Estates, and this is simply not goodenough. Balbriggan is a very large town with a growing

population and they need an adequate skate park.”O’Leary was happy to report that the Council agreed tofacilitate and co-ordinate withany local groups interested in developing a SkateboardPark in the Balbriggan area and assess any suggestedlocations in relation to suitability. “This is realprogress,” O’Leary continued. “And I’m encouragingany local groups to come forward and show theirsupport for a skateboard park, as the more groups weget coming together on this, the better it will be.” Localresident, Jean Fay Brady who is a member of BalbrigganAr Aghaidh, said the group has been extremely active inpursuing the Skate Park issue, and she told the CountyLeader she was thrilled to see progress being made.“Our group has been campaigning really hard to seethat Balbriggan gets its own skate park and we’rehappy to see that things are finally going forward.”

North County Livingby Jennifer McShane

A Voice For TheCommunity

It would be very true to say that Kathleen O’Brien is apillar of the Rush community. She has been living inRush for over 20 years and has been Chairperson ofthe Rush Senior Citizens for the last number of years. She is very much the voice of the elderly community, and devotes her time to ensuring that their needs aremet. She sat down with the County Leader to tell us alittle more about herself, what spurred her on to besuch a busy community activist and why she loves tocall Rush her home.Kathleen is the ideal candidate for chairperson of theRush Senior Citizens as she has very much a ‘get-up-and-go’ attitude when it comes to getting thingsdone. She says that its crucial that the elderly in thecommunity have someone to speak on their behalf, because she says, many would have no voice other-wise. “The elderly have to have a voice,” she told theCounty Leader. “Who would speak for them other-wise?” Kathleen works on behalf of the senior citi-zens as a volunteer, and devotes countless hours tovarious causes around Rush, completely free ofcharge. She has lived in Rush all her life and is a well knownface in the town, being involved in many other localorganisations (such as the Rush Community Council),as well as the senior citizens. "Chances are, if there'sa group in Rush, I'm involved in it," she said, smiling."I really care about the town that I've lived in for over30 years and want to see itsucceed and thrive." She pointsout that the once thriving town isno longer as it was, thanks to theremoval of the Gardai station, bank and recent fire to the church."Rush is now like a ghost town,"she said. "It really feels like Rushis being unfairly targeted, andthat the heart of our communityhas been taken away." She goes, what many would say is aboveand beyond dedication for theelderly members of the commu-nity, to ensure their needs aremet and their voices are heard."Now, more than ever, the elderlyand vulnerable need a voice." Kathleen’s dedication to her cause is truly admirable;many don’t realise that the tireless efforts that sheand all the others put in, is done entirely out of theirown time and is unpaid, but they soldier on regard-less in the quest to do what’s best for the entirecommunity. She goes on to thank and acknowledgeall the current and former members of the senior citi-zens group: Sean Byrne, Mai Clark, Olive Halpin andJimmy Maynard among others, and says she wouldn'tbe able to it, without the help of everyone in hercommunity. "I really do get a lot of wonderful supportfrom the members of my community."One of the key ways in which Kathleen aids the seniorcitizens in Rush is by being involved in the SeniorAlert Scheme and ensuring that those who are elderlyor vulnerable get the 24 hour monitoring PendantPersonal Alarm system installed in their homes. "Thealert scheme is there as a way of protecting thevulnerable in the community, and the alarms fallunder this category," Kathleen explained. "If a

person has an accident or needs assistance in anyway, all they have to do is press the alarm and helpwill be on the way. In recent times, particularly withthe break in of the church and with no garda stationaround, these alarms are vital as people are reallyfeeling terrified." Kathleen devotes a huge amount ofher own free time to visiting those, all over NorthDublin and beyond), who need an alarm, doing all theappropriate paperwork (which there is a lot of), andtrying her very best to make sure the alarms are givento those who need them. "It doesn't matter where Ihave to go, I'll get there to help, but so muchdepends on the grant we have to get for the scheme, which has been cut as it is, so it makes the job thatmuch harder." A close friend of Kathleen's, Donna O'Brien (no rela-tion), who is involved with Home Safe Home ElderlySecurity, a charitable, Social Enterprise organisation, supplies and fits these alarms, and gives out alarmsto the elderly and vulnerable who may be ineligiblefor the scheme or need one right away. "Donna isbrilliant," said Kathleen. "Herself and all involvedwith the organisation really go the extra mile toensure the elderly are protected." She also says thatif any elderly person is unsure of a caller who ringstheir doorbell, that they absolutely have the right toask as many questions about them and to see someform of identification before letting them in their

home. "I would always adviseanyone to be extra cautious (eventhose with the alarms) about whothey let into their homes, particu-larly as we have no police pres-ence in the town. It's just aboutstaying as safe as you can."

Earlier in the year, the communityhad quite a scare, when theGovernment suddenly announcedthat they would be making furthercuts to the Senior Alert scheme, and needless to say, the commu-nity were not willing to simplystand by and let this happen. "We were outraged," Kathleen

said. “It's completely ridiculous to try and cut a lifesaving scheme (she mentions a particular time aneighbour’s house went on fire, the day after theyhad their alarm installed!) when we don't even havethe presence of Gardai to act as a deterrent. Myself, the community and everyone who was going to beaffected by these cuts made sure to contact everymedia outlet we could to ensure we were heard." Allthe hard work paid off as the cuts were reversed afew days after the initial announcement was made."It was a very proud moment, and a testament to thepeople power that exists within our community." In the little spare time that she has, Kathleen enjoysspending time with her family, reading and justgenerally being involved in community life. Finishingup, she says she'll remain dedicated to the seniorcitizens in her community. "I won't ever stopspeaking out for the elderly or working on theirbehalf because they have to have a voice."

Local TDs Favour Abortion LegislationWith the GovernmentParties, and particu-larly, Fine Gael indisarray regarding thenew abortion laws, deputies representingthe North County havesteadfastly backed thenew law.Minister James Reillyand deputies AlanFarrell, Brendan Ryanand Clare Daly havegiven their support forthe legislation. However, while Dalywelcomes the legisla-tion, she says thatcurrently it is very inad-equate. She told the CountyLeader: “While Iwelcome, that aftersuch a long wait legisla-tion is being broughtforward on abortion inIreland, it is a great pitythat it is so inadequate. The legislation does notaddress fatal fetalabnormalities andcontinues to criminaliseabortion while fullyaware that women arelegally entitled totravel to the UK.”She continued: “Theprotection of l ife asopposed to health, means that cases likeSavita could stillhappen. Those on theanti abortion side areout of touch with thefeeling of the popula-

tion who in poll afterpoll have shown to bein favour of legislatingfor abortion in Ireland.” So far, four Fine Gael

deputies have vowed tolose the party whip andvote against the legisla-tion, especially with theinclusion of the suicide

provision. At this stage, the biggest revolt inGovernment in decadesis expected on thislegislation.

You can headback up Strand Street, or venture down by the lovely harbour and youare sure to find a restaurant to satisfy your hunger, be it the finestbeef, vegetarian, or seafood, for which the town is rightly renowned.

Skerries is unusual in that it has two main streets running parallel toeach other, Strand Street and Church Street. From a shopping perspec-

tive, Strand Street is where you will find the most shops. The fine StPatrick's Church can be accessed from both streets. Beside the church, on

Strand Street is the lovely Floraville Garden, depicting life in Skerries, which isin the process of being renovated. Skerries enjoys spectacular sunsets and, ifyou still have energy left after a day's shopping, a visit to the harbour toview the sunset is a must. No matter what season, there is somethingquietly romantic and atmospheric about this lovely fishing village. Theperfect place for shopping and relaxing after a day’s shopping. In the lastdecade, Skerries has become more accessible with the opening of theM1 motorway. It has always been a traditional place where people cameon holidays through the summer months and is still a real gem for theday tripper and tourist wanting to step back a space. Many people willremember Red Island and the showbands and latest 'big thing' inmusic performing there. Crowds used to flock to Skerries from all over, including from Northern Ireland. This was due to the fact that there wasa railway station in the town, which made the town accessible to all.The town is fast becoming a one stop shop to get your shopping needsand pick up some really nice gifts. The town has developed into a reallynice place to do business and to enjoy its many amenities. All in all, takesome hustle and bustle out of those packed shopping centres and townsand head for Skerries and do it all at your leisure. You'll be pleasantlysurprised.

There is a need for aSecondary School in the region toallow for pupils to maintain a consistency in education from junior infants to leavingcertificate.”“Balbriggan has number ofsecondary schools run by otherpatrons such as the VEC and faithbased patrons. I believe the townwould benefit from an EducateTogether Secondary School and Isupport the application of theEducate Together movement forthis patronage in Balbriggan,”Ryan concluded.

Many homeowners areconsidering improvingtheir current residence,

rather than moving to anew property. All thismakes sense when you

own when you’redreaming up a roommakeover. This alsohelps you stick to yourvision once you’vestarted.

Add Storage

Creating a new look inthe bedrooms is soexciting, as this room isso important towhoever sleeps in it.Children seem to accu-mulate a lot of junk andit’s important to keepon top of it. Try brightred, yellow and bluecolours to give funkyfun. Bins, baskets and

buckets are everyparent’s saviour whenit comes to conqueringkid clutter. Store themunder a low counterthat doubles as a playtable or incorporatethem into a bed. Thereare lots of storage bagsand boxes designedespecially for under thebed.

Kitchen

It’s easy to getprepared for thesummer in the kitchen. Most likely you’ll beinspired by the goodweather we are experi-encing now, by cookinga bit lighter food andperhaps trying outsome new recipes. So,change the dark, heavycurtains and go forsome thin, translucentfabric instead. Whenchanging not only the

curtains and blinds butalso tabloids, thinkabout all the summercolours and choose thelightest and brightestoptions. Browsearound the local deco-ration shops and maga-zines to get somecolour world inspirationand don’t be too shy totry out somethingtotally new, or trust theclassic summer colourssuch as green, yellowand white. Maybe youare considering a totalkitchen makeover. If so,then there are plenty ofkitchen showrooms inthe North County, where you can chooseyour new kitchen, ornew cooker. This willmake a great differenceto your home. After all,the kitchen is where wespend a lot of time, solet’s make it some-where we love to be.

Plumbing

It is vitally important tomake sure that

plumbing in your homeis up to scratch. Thiscovers the inevitablewater leaks that occurfrom time to time andwhich can destroy ahome in a whisker. It’simportant to know agood plumber andhave his phone numberconvenient. He will

also look after yourheating needs and nowis a good time toensure that your homeis ready for theupcoming winterseason. Make sure tohave your boilerserviced, as this willsave you money downthe road.

consider the cost ofmoving your home, from an area where youhave built up friend-ships and your childrenhave their own friends.A better idea is to cutcosts and stay put, bymaking improvementsto your home. This wayyou can make yourmark on your home andremain in the area, at afraction of the cost.Moving home isregarded as one of themost stressful things aperson does in theirlifetime. And with so many highquality local companiesout there willing tohelp, improving yourhome makes moresense than ever. Localhomeowners therefore, might want to considermaking improvementsaround the housewhich will not onlyimprove their quality oflife, but also raise thevalue of their proper-ties.

Change The Design

That’s right, justbecause you may notbe a qualified homedesigner, you can do alittle planning and giveit a shot. Create ascrapbook or binderfull of magazine clip-pings, fabrics andphotos of design thatcatches your eye. Ahomeowner who hasdone their homeworkreally helps whendesigning a part oftheir home. When youhave 20 different pagescollected, it gives you agood idea of whatyou’re aiming for.A sample boardconsisting of a collec-tion of fabric scraps, paint colours, flooringbits, photos of furnish-ings that tells theroom’s design story isvery helpful. gives recognition for thefamilies and friends ofpeople from Skerries, who were lost at sea,”said Carl.Local woman, Sheila

Plant lost her grandfather at sea in 1917, whenhis coal ship was torpedoed by a German U-Boat at Tusker Rock off Wexford. His body wasnever recovered. She became fascinated with

the story of her grandfather,James Mansfield, who livedon Strand Street in the town.“I was researching the story, when I discovered that Carlwas planning this memorial.I read about it on facebookand for me, it’s a wonderfulidea and is somewhere I cancome to remember him. Thisis the icing on the cake as faras I’m concerned and it givesme closure, which I’m sure itwill to many people,” sheconcluded. It is hoped that the monu-ment will be in place by thesecond week in Septemberand it is hoped thatPresident Higgins will offi-cially launch the project.
