The Evangel Audubon Park United Methodist Church June 2015 Newsleer One the fondest memories I have of the church of my childhood is of sitting in the sanctuary during worship with light streaming in through the beautiful stained glass windows depicting scenes from the life of Jesus. Stained glass, as an art form, reached it’s height during the middle ages when it was used to teach the Bible stories to a largely illiterate populace. It was, at the time, state of the art educational technology, but while the images in those windows were beautiful, powerful even, a window can’t depict or portray all the details and nuances of the story. A window can’t describe the conversation between Jesus and the woman at the well, or explain the significance of the stories’ setting in the land of Samaria. I was raised for the most part, at least in terms of religious education, on the flannel graph. To this day, although I know that the scriptures are peopled with characters of texture and nuance, I think of Bible people and see pastel paper figures pressed on a felt board. Just like stained glass windows the flannel graph flattened the characters and stories of the Bible. In turning these complex biblical narratives into children's stories, much of the depth, complexity and even meaning was lost. In Sunday school and through children’s bibles we learned these classic bible stories, but do they really mean what we think they mean? Might there be more to the bible stories of our youth? Is there more depth to the characters we read about? Is there more to the story? In this sermon series we’ll take a closer look at some of the bible stories we learned as children and ask ourselves if there might be more for us to learn in these stories we know so well. — Pastor Geoff Helton Join us for this summer sermon series. UPDATES ON OUR COMMUNITY OUTREACH:

There are exciting things happening at APUMC!

Our church for several years now has had a café open twice a month during

the hours of the food bank to give food bank patrons a place to sit and wait

comfortably. This café is expanding; now you can get a full breakfast at our

Food Bank Café. The Food Bank Café will be open every Tuesday from 8:30 -

10 a.m. While the food bank will not be open every week, there will be free

produce available during the hours of the café. Breakfast is open to all, not

only those in need. In fact we encourage church members to come down for

breakfast and get to know people in our community.

Saturday, June 13, Community Lunch from Noon– 2 p.m. All from our church

and community are invited. You don’t want to miss out! It’s our hope that

these lunches will become a regular, even monthly, event.

Our church will be serving a free lunch weekdays from 11 a.m.

- 1 p.m. to children under 18 years of age. These meals will

begin on June 22 and will run throughout the summer. Contact Lou

Dobberstein (326-1736) or Kirk White (467-1850) for more information about

the food bank café, the Saturday lunch or the daily children’s meal.

Audubon Park Young Adults is a ministry geared toward people (generally

between the ages of 18 and 35) who are in college, just starting their careers, just

starting their families… We are committed to being a Christ-centered community

with room for exploration and discussion. We don’t profess to have things all fig-

ured out or that we have all the answers, but we do try to be companions for the

journey.
