CHENNAI: A 22-year-old woman, working at the Nokia mobile handset manufacturing facility

at Sriperumbudur, died following an accident at the plant.

Police said S Ambiga, who had been working in the manual loader phase of the unit for three

years, was trapped inside the machine and severely injured on Sunday night. Company sources

told police that Ambiga was on duty at the loader phase-III on the second shift on Sunday when

her head and neck got jammed inside the machine. The accident took place around 7pm.

The other workers on the shift switched off the machine and pulled her out. She was taken to a

private hospital in Sriperumbudur but she succumbed to her injuries, police said.

Police said the woman from Vellore was her family's sole bread winner. "Ambiga had opened

the inspection door of the loading machine when it got stuck. She was supposed to call the floor

leader for such work but opened it herself. If the door is opened, the machine switches off

automatically. But it can also be operated even if the doors are open and the girl had switched it

on, unmindful of the danger. Her neck got trapped between the door and the tray. When she

screamed, the others switched off the machine and broke open the trays to rescue her," said

Sriperumbudur deputy superintendent of police V Balasubramaniam.

The Nokia plant remained closed on Monday as a token of respect to the victim. In a statement,

the Nokia management said the company had started investigating the circumstances that lead to

the tragedy as per the factory norms and guidelines.

A press release from the deputy commissioner of labour said the government had constituted a

committee under commissioner of labour Hans Raj Varma to assess the reasons for accident.

Iyyanu, chief inspector of factories, and Sivarajan, divisional revenue officer, Kancheepuram, are

the other members of the committee.

Finnish mobile handset manufacturer Nokia currently employs around 7,000 personnel at its

Sriperumbudur facility and 70% of the work force comprises women.

Chennai, Nov. 1: A 22-year-old woman working with Nokia lost her life on Sunday in an

industrial belt seen as a gleaming symbol of new-age technology and the ubiquitous cellphone.

Police sources quoted witnesses as saying S. Ambica’s skull was crushed when the robotic arm

of a “loader machine” came loose and fell on her while she was working under it at Nokia’s

manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, about 50km from Chennai.

“We have registered a case of accidental death. We are inquiring into the exact sequence of

events and if there was any negligence anywhere,” Kancheepuram SP Prem Anand Sinha said.

The facility, apart from being in the town known for Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, is located in a

20km industrial belt along the Chennai-Bangalore highway that houses MNCs such as Hyundai,

Samsung, Motorola, Dell and Flextronics. Nokia set up shop there during the industrial thrust

given by Dayanidhi Maran when he was infotech minister from 2004-07.

Company sources said Ambica, who was from Vellore district and had been working with Nokia

for two years, had basically been involved in assembling, sorting and packing mobile phones.

She was apparently working at the “manual loader” on Sunday evening when the accident

happened.

“Her neck and head got jammed in the loader machine when she bent down to pick up a box that

had fallen,” the company said in a press release.

A third version was given by M. Shanmugam, the general secretary of the Labour Progressive

Front that heads the workers’ union at Nokia. He claimed Ambica’s co-workers had said she was

operating a punching machine and chatting when her hand got caught in the machine and

crushed.

“She panicked while trying to free herself and, in the process, lost her balance, slipped and fell

into the slot and the machine crushed her head and neck,” Shanmugam told The Telegraph.

He claimed the accident had happened in the production area, not in the manual loading dock as

put out by the company. “The mishap was because of inattention on part of the worker and there

was little time for others to rescue her.”

Ambica was taken to a Sriperumbudur hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. She was

the sole earning member of her family, with a salary of around Rs 8,000 a month. The factory

declared a holiday today.

A Nokia spokesperson said: “Safety and security of our employees is of utmost concern to us.

Any such incident will be investigated properly as per factory norms and guidelines.”

The handset manufacturer employs around 8,000 people at the facility, of which 4,000 are

regular workers and 4,000 on contract. About 70 per cent employees are women because

assembling and packing require nimble hands, company sources said.

CHENNAI: In a horrifying incident on Sunday evening at Nokia’s manufacturing facility in

Sriperumbudur, a 22-year-old woman died after her neck was crushed inside a machine.

What’s more, technicians refused to switch off even when she was bleeding through her nose and

mouth, writhing in pain for over 20 minutes.

On Monday, agitated workers of the cell phone factory gathered at the Apollo hospital premises,

where she was brought for treatment.

They accused the management of not taking steps to rectify a “sensor” that had not been working

for the past six months, despite their repeated pleas, resulting in Sunday’s accident.

The girl, S Ambiga, was manually pushing “panel boards” (of cell phones) through the uploaders

as a sensor was defunct, a colleague said, recalling the accident.

The sensor, however, suddenly got activated and an iron rod moved in when her head was inside

the machine, crushing her neck.

The incident took place at 6.50 pm and Ambiga remained trapped till 7.15 pm, he said, as the

technicians did not press the emergency button, saying the production process could not be

stopped.

After Ambiga was taken to hospital, shift manager Purushothaman told the others to get back to

work, saying, “She is alright”, triggering angry retorts from them asking: “‘Will you behave like

this if it was one from your family?”

The bleeding girl was taken all the way to Chennai instead of being treated at a nearby hospital, a

worker said.

He said by the time some of them alerted her parents and brought them to the hospital at 12.50

am, Ambiga had died.

Hailing from a poor peasant family in Puttithangal village of Vellore district, Ambiga had been

working as a line operator for a monthly salary of Rs 8,500. Her parents said their family of five

depended on her income.

Seems like human villians are passe and the age now is of their machine counterparts. An ''enthiran''

(robot) turned a deadly killer on Sunday at the Nokia facility in Sriperumbudur, where a woman was done

to death after her head got stuck in the ‘loader robot machine’.

Twenty-two-year-old Ambika, a mobile phones body assembly engineer at the Finland-based mobile

company’s most modern India plant, was doing her routine evening shift at the assembly line when her

head suddenly got into the robot’s clasp at around 7:30 pm, police said.

The robot’s frame closed in suddenly to trap her head as she bent to place a set of the body-frames,

Sriperumbudur police said, but could not give more details due to the technical nature of the mishap.

Daughter of Sekar and hailing from Kalavai village in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore district, Ambika struggled for

nearly 25 minutes as her colleagues tried to rescue her from the ‘robot’.

After some time, Ambika was retrieved from the robot’s clutches and was taken to a private hospital in

Sriperumbudur that gave her first-aid. The employee’s face is said to have been badly mauled in the

machine operation, which is believed to be a ‘hydraulic puncher’. Ambika was then rushed to the multi-

specialty Apollo Hospitals in Chennai, police said. However, the mishap turned too fatal for her and she

died around 1:30 am on Monday, sources said.

Even as the shocked parents of Ambika dashed to Apollo Hospitals, police said no FIR has been filed till

late Monday evening, as the parents of the deceased employee were “in talks” with the Nokia officials

in Chennai on what could be a suitable compensation for the victim. Even the post-mortem has been

delayed due to this, police said.

The tragic incident has shaken the 8000-strong Nokia workforce, known for its high-safety standards

worldwide. The company shut down its Sriperumbudur plant for a day on Monday.

While local Nokia officials could not be reached, Deccan Herald managed to contact officials at Nokia

India’s headquarters at Gurgaon near New Delhi on Monday night. “It is a mishap that has never

happened before anywhere in our company units,” said Poonam Kaul, Nokia’s director for

communications. Confirming from the company side that the employee was no more, Kaul said: “This

has shocked all of us and therefore we declared a holiday (at Sriperumbudur plant) on Monday. We are

giving all the support to the (victim’s) family.”

Stating that Nokia accorded the highest priority for employee safety and work environment, Kaul said:

“We are trying to figure out what went wrong.” Kaul could not immediately say what exactly the

machine involved in this mishap was all about.

Nokia’s mobile device production unit at Sriperumbudur is its tenth manufacturing facility globally that

started production in January 2006. Nearly 70 per cent of their workforce in the Sriperambudur factory

is women.
