2 Al Kader Oasis - November 2020

From the Potentate’s Desk by 2020 Potentate I.S. Carl Thompson

Greetings one and all,

I hope this Oasis finds you all well and happy. Last month we held our socially distanced and masked-up Stated Meeting in Harrington Hall. We have never looked so good! We had enough room for many more Nobles, so in the future if you feel safe, and would like to attend please do try. I would like to welcome our newest Noble who was initiated at the October stated, Noble Craig Wilcox. Noble Wilcox and his lady Kat are looking forward to meeting everyone and attending upcoming events.

I would like to thank everyone for keeping the embers burning while things

have been so slow. There’s not a lot we can do other than call and support each other when we can. I know that is happening more than ever, keep it up. Until we have the restrictions lifted we will continue to move forward, albeit slowly and cautiously.

Chief Rabban Terry and Lady Deb are extremely busy working on a fun and engaging 2021. It shaping up to be amazing.

Have a Happy and Joyous Thanksgiving! We all have a lot to be thankful for.

“Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.”

– Brother George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation

Chaplain’s Report by Noble Steven Levin

Greetings Dear Nobles and esteemed Ladies of the Al Kader Shrine.

As your Chaplain, it was my fondest hope to be preparing this November’s report free of the spectre of the Covid 19 Pandemic hanging over our heads as well as an end to the nasty political rhetoric from both parties that keeps us from remaining the truly amazing example America has been to the rest of the world for so long. This however, is not to be. And added to these disheartening problems with which we are faced, is the continuing list of Black Camel visits that cause us pain and point us towards a desire for deep reflection. Now, perhaps more than ever in our respective lifetimes, we need to embrace fully, the tenets of our wonderful brotherhood and all that we stand for.

I have been making a conscious effort to connect with as many of you as I can with the simple intention of letting you know none of us are alone. It has been my goal to reach out by phone rather than send cards or texts, or even emails. I believe there is an inherent quality in the human voice that can convey what even the most prolific authors can’t include in their writings. I sincerely hope this is true. The feedback I have had has been very positive.

Please let me know if you ever need someone to just listen without judgment of any kind. Just an ear to hear, and or a shoulder to lean on. I can think of no greater honor than to be that individual for you.

Stay safe, stay well, stay positive in your ponderings and above all never forget you are loved by our creator and he will show us the way.

I am currently looking for short stories, warm anecdotes and personal experiences with dearly departed Noble brothers for the Oasis. Please email them to [email protected] and let me know if you prefer to be anonymous or if we can use your name.

Respectfully and deep love and affection,

Your humble Chaplain

The Al Kader History - Chapter 3 By Noble John Smith, Historian

1870’s - The “A.A.N.O.M.S.” began in 1872, in New York, to give members a place for fraternity, fellowship and Masonic fun - an “oasis” from the stresses of life’s realities. It added a moral, but fun, way for Masons (only men from the Scottish or York Rites or Knights Templar could join) to live. It was little wonder that Mecca Temple in New York was the first Shrine Temple. It is also no surprise that during that decade two “fun and fellowship” devices were invented – movies and the telephone (by a Freemason).

This “new” group (A.A.N.O.M.S.) offered what Freemasons sought; fun and fellowship. The founders of the A.A.O.N.M.S. were amazed at the popularity and spread of their organization through-out North America. Shrine Temples were formed in Indianapolis, Toronto, Chicago, Pittsburgh Niagara Falls, Philadelphia, Omaha, Cleveland, San Francisco, et al.

The Al Kader History - Chapter 4 By Noble John Smith, Historian

Life in the 1880’s was pretty good. Private organizations were expanding. Coca Cola, electricity, the automobile, the dish washer and the motorcycle were invented and further liberated the American way of life. Early that decade, several men got together to plan a Shrine Temple in Portland.

The A.A.O.N.M.S. was well represented in the playground of San Francisco but there was no Shriner’s Temple in the Northwest. A new Temple, named ”Al Kader Shrine Temple,” was established.

It seems, historically, that every successful time in life is followed by a time of trials. Railroads, banks, retail and manufacturing businesses filed for bankruptcy. Farmers were in despair due to the failure of the corn crop. The government itself resorted to borrowing, labor disputes abounded, steel and iron strikes flourished and then the Chinese-Japanese war broke out. But the A.A.O.N.M.S., society’s source of fun and fellowship, continued to grow.

Oriental Band Rock The Lot! By Noble John Smith

The Everly Brothers showed up, Elvis was there, Tina Turner joined us, Brother IZ came from Hawaii, the Beatles quarantined then visited – but we missed you. Sunday afternoon 41 Shriners & ladies mastered the Al Kader Parking Lot for a concert by “Billy and the Rockets” playing sounds we heard in our malt shops when some of us were young. We found lots of fun and loads of fellowship abounding amid the music. Some Karaoke would have been fun too!

Even some “not-yet 60s” were there to see us dance, sing and remember. Some danced, Velda Schoessler was honored for her OB service and some just sat-and-sang but we all thought of those good times when we were younger. Past and future I.S.s basked in the sun or in the shade. Divan, guests, members and even some birds joined us.

Let the “OB” know what your Unit or Club has planned so we can attend your event.

Greeters By Noble Don Slezak

Here it is another month and another chance to have a productive meeting. Last month’s meeting was cancelled because we had nothing new to report.

This month’s meeting will be on November 10, 2020 at 6 PM at the Shrine Center. All members are expected to attend as nominations and election for officers for next year will be held. If you don’t come to the meeting you can expect to have an office next year. If you come you get to choose officer position you’ll hold. Is that fair or what?

Not many things are planned for the remainder of the year but we need to be ready for the ones that are and the only way to find out is to come to the meeting.

Restrictions will probably still be in force so plan on bringing your own drink. No food will be provided. The final P & L from the golf tournament will be available so we can plan our year end donations.

The left over golf pouches will be on sale at the Shrine Center on a first come basis. The pouch by itself is $10.00 and the pouch with golf balls is $15.00. There are 20 some pouches and 3 with balls. When they are gone thats it. All proceeds will be used to off set the purchase of the pouches. See page 9 for details.

See you at the meeting.

by Dereesa Reid, Administrator of Shriners Hospitals for Children - Portland

A few weeks ago, our very own Michael Sussman, M.D. received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM) at their annual meeting. The recipient of this award is honored for making creative contributions of outstanding significance to the field of medicine and for the benefit of patients with cerebral palsy and other childhood-onset disabilities.

While I have only known Dr. Sussman for a few brief years, there were pivotal moments in his career at the Portland Shriners Hospital that determined the future and our present model of care. He believed that the best patient outcomes resulted from a care model that centered around the patient and their family. Thus, this vision for a wrap-around, patient-centered model of care became a reality for the Portland Shriners Hospital.

Dr. Sussman’s innovative vision was not limited to a patient care model, but also included a robust research model that encompassed both basic science and clinical research. He understood that these research practices would continually advance care by providing evidence-based treatment options to ensure the most effective treatments were being utilized.

I was once told that the measure of our success will be determined by how we are remembered. As we each build our own legacies, we will reach greater heights at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Portland because of Dr. Sussman’s vision and work.

Tillamook County Shrine Club: Oktoberfest vs. Rajahfest by Noble Carey Huckaba

The Shriners from Lower God’s Country partook of the Tillamook Elks Lodge Oktoberfest on October 9th with the finest of Oktoberfest fare like Vienna Schnitzel, Bratwurst, sauerkraut, sweet & sour red cabbage, kartoffein, strudel and Black Forest cake, while being serenaded with traditional German music.

Then on October 21st the Lower God’s Country Shriners were treated to a RAJAH fest at Tillamook Moose Lodge with a menu consisting of a 14-ounce cut of Prime Rib of Beef, from the moo cut (rare) to well done or anything in between. This luscious chunk of prime beef was accompanied with a salad bar, a baked potato, green beans almandine and a dessert. It was duly noted that not one of those present, could stuff down every delicious morsel of that prime rib. Whether a treat for man’s best friend, a midnight snack or a breakfast entrée, everyone left with a doggie bag containing a chunk of prime beef.

The meal was very reasonably priced, even so, President Ted Johnson paid the bill for all the Shriners, their Ladies and guests present as a thank you for their support for a trying year with the pandemic and all, yet a very successful year for the Tillamook County Shrine Club.

Just when everyone was thinking that life just does not get better than this, Tillamook Moose Lodge presented the Shriners with a $125.00 donation to the Shriners Hospital. How great it is that the Tillamook Moose Lodge is a regular contributor to our favorite charity, the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Thank you Tillamook Moose members for opening your doors to local Shriners, for serving us a succulent meal while also making a generous contribution to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
