Welcome... In this issue Winter 2016/Spring 2017

to the Winter 2016/Spring 2017 edition of Aboard the Ark

Message from Ru Watkins, Chief ExecutiveThis issue of Aboard the Ark sees the launch of our Precious Moments appeal. This year we’ve drawn on the many heart-felt messages we receive from our families. They show that when a child has a life-limiting or life-threatening condition, one of the gifts a family can receive is the chance to make every moment count. By contributing to our appeal you can help us provide the Nurses, Specialist

Carers and Volunteers who really do ease the burden, giving families more of that precious time together.

Thanks to some generous donations we’re ever closer to beginning work on our new hospice build. During the summer, the construction industry came forward with offers of help for free, allowing us to clear the Byng Road site and we’ve unveiled our final design to local residents. Our

new design has been shaped by the families who use our service, by the sector and by local community groups. You can read the latest and have a look at our design inside.

We’ve also included a sneak preview of our new magazine Animal Crackers – produced by and for children. You can read the full magazine on our website or by emailing [email protected]

Who we are...Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice provides care at home to babies, children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions across central and north London. We offer families bespoke packages of care tailored to their specific needs.

With less than 10% of our income provided by the NHS, our fundraising team works hard to enable us to constantly expand our community services. Plus, our many volunteers magnify the care we provide significantly.

We are also raising funds to complete our circle of care by building our own dedicated hospice building in Barnet.

There’s a lot of information about the work we do in this issue of Aboard the Ark, but if you want to find out more please get in touch using any of the methods at the bottom of this page.

Keep in touchCan’t wait for the next issue of Aboard the Ark? Did you know that our e-newsletter Take a Moment could be dropping into your inbox every month?

Please help our Precious Moments Appeal “The best gifts in life will never be found under a Christmas tree. Those gifts are the support, care and precious moments you have given our family.” This is one of many notes we’ve received from Noah’s Ark families, summing up why our work is so important. We’re making this message, and many others like it, the focus of our new Precious Moments appeal.

Because when you donate to Noah’s Ark, your support gives the gift of time together – something that’s absolutely priceless to our families.

Sadly this winter marks a year since the devastating loss of one Noah’s Ark child. More heart-break followed with six further children dying during the course of the year. So it’s clear that for our families, every moment counts.

By funding our Nurses, Specialist Carers, Therapists, Social Workers and Volunteers, who dedicate themselves to easing the burden, your donation can provide more family time – and all the smiles and laughter that go with it.

Spotlight on… regular giverJohn Rogerson

Grants fund Music, Drama and Specialist Care

It was spotting one of our posters during a visit to KFC in Archway that put John in touch with the work of Noah’s Ark.“I was with my two boys, Zachary and Noah! That’s why it caught my eye,” he explained (Noah is pictured left). “I try to give a certain percentage of my earnings to charities each year and had recently received a pay rise so was happy to pass on the good fortune.

Noah’s Ark has successfully bid for funding from various trusts, allowing us to recruit more staff to improve the care we are offering families. In September we were awarded a three-year £120,000 grant from the City Bridge Trust. The trust uses surplus money from bridge maintenance to make donations to charitable organisations across London. We

are using the money to fund our Music Therapist, Kirsty Ormston and Drama and Movement Therapist, Amy Keenan. The City Bridge Trust grant was announced on 27 September, City Giving Day.

Thanks to a three-year grant totalling £82,400 from BBC Children in Need, we’ve been able to appoint Specialist Carer Chloe Rich.

And funding from the Boparan Charitable Trust, allowed us to recruit

our new nurse Emma Pleass. Mrs Baljinder Boparan, Trustee for the charity said: “The Boparan Charitable Trust is committed to changing the lives of children across London and the UK, we are delighted that this new appointment at Noah’s Ark will help to reach out to even more children. We look forward to following Emma’s progress over the next 12 months.”

You can read profiles of our new staff in this issue.

Where there’s a Will... This October saw Noah’s Ark partner with local Will specialist solicitors Michael Anvoner & Co to hold our first ever Will Week.During the week, Michael and his team waived their fees for Will writing in return for a suggested donation to Noah’s Ark of £95 for a single Will.

Samantha Anastasiou (pictured) from Michael Anvoner said: “As Noah’s

Ark is on our doorstep, it seemed an excellent way of giving something back to a local charity.

“We feel that it is very important for everyone to make a Will, and Noah’s Ark’s Will Week provided an opportunity for us to spread this message and raise much-needed funds for their hospice services.

“Whatever you do in life you want your nearest and dearest to benefit from your hard work when you die. The only way to be sure this happens is to make a Will.

“We have had very positive feedback

from clients, with many saying that Will Week prompted them to get their affairs in order and deal with matters that they had kept putting off. Knowing that they were giving to a charity they supported at the same time was incredibly motivating.”

Noah’s Ark’s next Will Week will take place in May 2017.

To make a regular donation please use the form on the back of this issue or visit www.noahsarkhospice.org.uk/donate.

Open for business A hard-working crew of 25 volunteers from KFC joined up with Noah’s Ark to create a brilliant pop up shop in a day.

The KFC team spent the day at our warehouse in Stevenage, helping sort through the many toys, clothes and other items donated to Noah’s Ark by the public and businesses.

The volunteer day was part of a wider programme of support from the restaurant chain. All 144 of KFC’s restaurants in London helped Noah’s

Ark throughout the summer with collection boxes at the counters, special meal deals and donations.

We’d love to team up with other businesses large or small to raise money, help us find volunteers or work together in many different ways. Call us on 020 8449 8877 or visit www.noahsarkhospice.org.uk

“Noah’s Ark looked close to my heart as our boy Noah had a shaky start – we owe his life to the doctors who saved him. If we can help parents and children at the most difficult time of their lives, then it’s a pleasure to give anything we can.”

So what would John say to someone contemplating a regular donation? “I would say, think about that coffee you buy every morning and whether perhaps this small amount could go elsewhere to make a difference. Children are the dearest thing in anyone’s life and when there is illness involved the whole family is affected and lives stand still. Make a small, regular donation and know you’re making a huge, huge difference to someone in need.”

New hospicebuild comes a step close

r

A lot has been happening in our project to construct what will be the only children’s hospice building in central and north London

Since the last issue of Aboard the Ark we’ve raised a further £1.2m towards our Building the Ark Appeal, shown off the final design and cleared the Byng Road site ready to begin construction. Plus the property group behind the Shard is urging the whole sector to give us their support.

The new hospice will offer 24-hour end-of-life care, day care and specialist palliative care clinics, creative therapies and much more. It will be set on a 7.5 acre nature reserve on Byng Road in Barnet. Once complete, the hospice will complement Noah’s Ark’s existing home and community-based services, to complete our circle of care for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions, and their families.

What will it look like?In June, our final design for the new building were released – you can see what the hospice entrance and a typical family room will look like on this page, along with a view of the building from the outside. As the designs show, it will be a beautifully bright and welcoming space with wonderful views overlooking the nature reserve beyond.

Residents living close to the site were invited to view the plans and discuss them with Noah’s Ark Chief Executive Ru Watkins. They included Fleur Smith who said: “It seems like a great area to have the hospice. The designs are very light and very airy.”

Ru welcomed the progress so far: “Our new design has been shaped by the families who use our service, by the sector and by local community groups.

“We’re moving forward at pace with our plans to take Noah’s Ark to the next step by completing the circle of care for the children and families we support.”

Construction industry gets on boardIn the autumn, Sellar Property Group, who built the Shard and upcoming Paddington Cube, called on the construction industry to back our new hospice and come forward with offers of help.

Founder and Chairman Irvine Sellar said: “This hospice build is crucial to London families, so we asked ourselves what we could do to help. We’ve tapped into our supply chain, letting them know how important Noah’s Ark is and what a powerful impact the industry can make by applying what it knows, helping with resource and build.”

Major demolition firm Erith responded by offering to clear the site – £170,000 worth of work, provided pro-bono. In August, Erith’s workers came on site, demolishing derelict buildings, levelling the land and removing rubble.

Erith MD David Darsey said: “This building project was a unique opportunity to do what we do best for the benefit of children and families in need of palliative care and support in London. I urge all in the construction industry to lend a hand.”

Extensive project management and planning support has also been provided pro-bono by JLL UK.

Big donations boost our fundsMeanwhile some major donors and Trusts have come forward to contribute to our Building the Ark Appeal, including the Hadley Trust and Garfield Weston Foundation. We are currently planning a number of exciting ways for our friends in the community to help us complete the appeal. Watch this space for how you can get involved!

Judge Rinder rules it’s time to volunteer

Chloe joins our Specialist Care team

fans so I think it was a bit of a surprise having me show up at their house and have a kick around in the garden

“It was clear to see the difference that can be made to a family, just by helping out around the house and taking away the simple jobs many of us take for granted. I would encourage anybody who has a bit of free time to give up an hour or so every week to volunteer for Noah’s Ark.”

The visit was part of Noah’s Ark’s charity partnership with Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. Find out more at www.forpreciousmoments.com . To volunteer with Noah’s Ark call 020 8449 8877 or visit www.noahsarkhospice.org.uk/volunteer

He’s wowed us on the dancefloor with his performances in Strictly Come Dancing, but TV’s toughest judge is also a supporter of Noah’s Ark, and lent a voice to our appeal for volunteers.

Judge (Robert) Rinder lives in north London and has been encouraging locals to volunteer for Noah’s Ark’s Project Appleseed, a joint initiative with the Life Force paediatric palliative care team, from Whittington Hospital. The project aims to match families who need support with people who can help out by doing a spot of gardening, helping with homework or a range of everyday tasks. Full training and support is given to all volunteers, even if you can just spare a few hours now and then.

Anna Fitzgibbon, who’s heading up the project said: “Whatever your interests, skills or hobbies, we believe you will be able to make an important difference in a family’s life.

“And volunteering can make a big difference to your life. Our volunteers leave with a positive feeling about having made a difference every time – and say it’s a privilege to feel you can be of service to your community.”

Liz Bier (pictured) from Camden has been a Noah’s Ark Home Support Volunteer for three years with the same family. “I visit the family once a week to

play with the Noah’s Ark child, so the mother can take a little break. It can be very rewarding, and also very challenging. I realise how important it is that a mother has some time off, (or spends it with her other children) and I know she really appreciates it. They make me feel very comfortable in their home, and we have formed a strong relationship. “

If you think volunteering might be the thing for you, start by visiting www.noahsarkhospice.org.uk/volunteer.

“Becoming a children’s nurse was all I ever wanted to do,” explains Emma Pleass who joined Noah’s Ark in September.

Emma trained as a paediatric nurse at Great Ormond Street Hospital where she worked for more than 20 years. As well as her nursing duties, Emma has been helping manage and recruit a new group of Specialist Carers and is taking the lead on infection control.

“Hospice work has always appealed to me,” she said. “I really enjoy working with children and young people, where I have the time to truly get to know them and their families.”

“I’d begun volunteering with Noah’s Ark a year ago and meeting all the staff convinced me it was the right move.”

If you are interested in nursing with Noah’s Ark, or know anyone who might be, visit our Work for us page at www.noahsarkhospice.org.uk.

Chloe Rich began working at Noah’s Ark in October as one of our Specialist Carers. Chloe graduated from the University of Nottingham in June with a BA in Geography. However, she has plenty of experience of working with children who have life-threatening and life-limiting conditions.

“I’ve always wanted a job where I can help bring something to children’s lives and I liked the ethos of Noah’s Ark,” she said. “The great things that Noah’s Ark does for children, made me want to get involved.”

We caught up with Chloe a week into the job, which had already seen her “mucking about” with one of our activity groups. “I have started to shadow [fellow Specialist Carers] Jules, Paula, Tony and Lottie to get a feel for what a Specialist Carer does,” Chloe explains. “I’ve been to two of the Noah’s Ark events; the Parent Pamper Day and the Mucky Monkeys Children’s Group – it was great seeing the children get involved in the painting and songs.”

“Each child or young person is different with their own unique care plan and I’m looking forward to getting to

know them and give them each my undivided attention.”

Meet… Emma Pleass

It’s not often you sit down to tea made by an England and Spurs hero. But that’s just what happened to one Noah’s Ark family when record-breaking striker Harry Kane visited their north London home. And he did his share of ironing and tidying up the garden too! The family’s eldest son Joseph, 13, has a life-limiting condition and receives support from Noah’s Ark, while his brothers Nate and Fran take part in our sibling group activities.

As well as doing his bit to help out, Harry highlighted the work of our volunteers, who provided just under 20,000 hours of support in 2015. Over the course of the Spurs charity partnership, the club will help us drive volunteer recruitment, so we can find more people to ease the burden of household chores on families like Joseph’s.

Harry said: “I had a great afternoon spending time with Joseph and his family. The three boys are all big Spurs

Imagine the excitement in a bus full of teenagers setting off to go bowling for the first time, or the anticipation felt by a child going skating, who never thought they’d visit an ice rink? These are just a couple of examples of how Noah’s Ark Children’s Groups are giving new experiences and social opportunities to children and young people.

The groups have been running successfully for a year now – so successfully that we’re looking to

expand them in the future, so watch this space for more.

They were developed following discussions with children, young people and families about what they would like to be doing and what was missing from Noah’s Ark services.

As well as setting up the sessions, which have ranged from messy art and crafts and storytelling to bowling, we’ve also covered off all of the practicalities – ensuring clinically-trained staff are attending, making sure venues are accessible, with adequate changing facilities and that appropriate food is provided.

Hayley Manley, Nurse Team Leader, explained: “We had an established programme of sibling activities, which meant that Noah’s Ark children and young people often watched their brothers and sisters going off to do exciting things - and that didn’t seem fair.

“The groups are great for helping build resilience, make friends and increase independence. They’re exploring new things … and most of all having lots of fun.”

There are currently four groups, Monkeys, Crocodiles, Penguins and Zebras. Membership of each group isn’t just based on age, but needs and interests too and Noah’s Ark looks carefully at each child or young person to ensure the right group is allocated to them.

If you know of a child or young person who might benefit from Noah’s Ark services please visit www.noahsarkhospice.org.uk to make a referral.

Kirsty and Amy come on board

Monkey business and more

Since Music Therapist, Kirsty Ormston and Drama and Movement Therapist, Amy Keenan joined us in September, they’ve been enriching children and young people’s experiences and helping them communicate in a variety of ways. As Kirsty told us: “Everybody reacts to music in some way, whether that’s how it makes you feel or move. As a Music Therapist you’re trained to observe physical and emotional cues and interpret them into music.”

A professional cellist, Kirsty has worked in schools, helping children and young people with a range of needs.

In her sessions she plays guitar, piano and smaller instruments as well as using technology. Song-writing is an important part of her repertoire too.

Amy Keenan uses the techniques of drama, such as roleplay and storytelling. “For me the job brought together all my interests, experience and passions,” she explains

“Drama and play are the ways children and young people communicate; their

natural way of expressing themselves. For some children with life-limiting and or life threatening conditions it’s a really good way of aiding their development.”

Amy did a degree in psychology before training as a Drama and Movement Therapist at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Since then she’s worked with children and adults with learning disabilities.

It’s not often a hardy band of pirates sweeps you

off for an adventure on the high seas. But that’s just

what happened to the Noah’s Ark’s Crocodile group,

when they took part in a brilliant activity day with

arts charity Ingeenium.

They sang sea shanties, got tangled up in seaweed,

rescued a jellyfish or too and of course, searched

for buried treasure. The Crocodiles all loved the day

which obviously made a big impression…

Pirate Amy, Pirate Sarah and their crew were very popular – but not at all scary.

The sea shanties went down well, with everyone enjoying the singing … and the chance to make a lot of noise. The pirates tried to include each child’s name in their songs, which the group all loved.

There was a parrot too – you couldn’t shut him up!

Some of the Crocodiles were put to work scrubbing down the ship’s deck which involved a lot of squishing.

Everyone got to put their hands in some seaweed – yuk!

A few of the Crocodiles decided they’d like to be pirates when they grow up.

Retail news

What’s hot in our shops? Our shops are a brilliant place to go for a bargain so why not drop in and see what’s waiting for you today? Pauline Jezzard has helped out in our Barnet shop for the past two years, although she has been volunteering for Noah’s Ark in various roles for much longer. “I love working in the shop. It’s a nice little place to be,” she said. “You get to meet a lot of people, and everyone’s friendly, plus it gives you a really positive feeling!”

The shop sells clothes and furniture, and tests and sells electrical items. But according to Pauline some of the best buys are to be had among the children’s section, where toys and clothes, which are always in such good condition, can be found. “We usually have pushchairs, cots, and nursery

equipment on offer too. We have a good little bargain corner!”

You might also find a unique, handmade item or two: “One lady in particular asks us for any dolls that have come in. She knits outfits for them, which we can sell for a good price! Other people knit baby clothes for us too.”

“If you are thinking of volunteering, this is a good cause, and working in the shop makes you feel very much a part of the local community.”

You can find our shops at 103 Barnet High Street EN5 5TZ, 287 Finchley Road NW 6ND and 24 Shenley Road, Borehamwood, WD6 1DR.

Ledley King… of shopsTottenham Hotspur ambassador Ledley King visited the Noah’s Ark charity shop in Barnet during the summer to help volunteers sort through donated clothing, books and household goods as well as serving customers.

Ledley urged people to remember Noah’s Ark when having a clear out: “If anyone has any clothes, books, furniture or toys that they aren’t using anymore, please donate them to one of the Noah’s Ark shops – it could really help to make a difference to the lives of the children and young people who need our help the most.”

It’s all change! The retail arm of Noah’s Ark has been working behind the scenes to make our shops and eBay store the best they can be. Julian Cichy, our Area Retail Manager, says: “We are currently welcoming on board two new Store Managers who will really enable us to reset our shops. We’re going to add structure, simplify how we operate, create great volunteer experiences and share our story better with customers. I’m also going to train up a new eBay Trader who will spot and sell the donated treasures we receive! ”

We’re looking forward to re-jigging things but, in the meantime, do send us your unwanted, good-quality items to us to help raise much-needed funds.

If you’d like to volunteer in one of our shops visit www.noahsarkhospice.org.uk/volunteer or call 020 8449 8877 to find out more.

Henry: Will Mummy Pig have any more piglets?

Mummy Pig: Well I think Mummy Pig has her hands full with Peppa and George. They keep me very, very busy.

Henry: If you were not a pig what animal would you like to be?

Mummy Pig: I can’t imagine being any other animal, because pigs are so kind and clean and fun.

Henry: What does Peppa Pig want to be when she grows up?

Mummy Pig: I think Peppa can be anything she wants to be. But I think it would be really fun if she was the first pig in space.

Henry: Why do you only wear one outfit?

Mummy Pig: We do have lots and lots of different outfits but they all look the same.

Henry: Would you like to come to Animal Crackers for a sleepover?

Mummy Pig: That is such a nice request. Everyone likes a sleepover. They are so much fun. I would love to but I think Peppa and George might miss me.

Henry: Do you like sparkly shoes? Because you

are always wearing wellies?

Mummy Pig: I think everyone loves a sparkly shoe, but wellies are so practical. After all you know what our favourite past time is? It’s jumping in muddy puddles. It is better to do that in some wellies than in sparkly shoes.

Henry: Why exactly do you like splashing in puddles so much?

Mummy Pig: Oh splashing in puddles, especially muddy puddles, is so much fun. It’s very satisfying. Who doesn’t love splashing in muddy puddles? Do you like splashing in muddy puddles?

Henry: It’s my natural habitat.

Mummy Pig: How lovely!

You can boost your donation by 25p for every £1 you donate by letting us know that we are able to reclaim Gift Aid on your donation(s). I am a UK taxpayer and understand that if I pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all my donations in that tax year it is my responsibility to pay any difference.

Gift Aid is reclaimed by Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice from the tax you pay for the current tax year. Your address is needed to identify you as a current UK taxpayer.

I would like Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice to treat all gifts of money that I have made in the past 4 years and all future gifts of money that I make from the date of this declaration as Gift Aid donations.

I confirm I have paid, or will pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for each tax year (6 April to 5 April) that is at least equal to the amount of tax that all charities or Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs) that I donate to will reclaim on my gifts for that tax year. All other taxes such as VAT and Council Tax do not qualify. Further information on Gift Aid can be found on the HM Revenue and Customs website. Please notify Noah’s Ark if you: (1) Want to cancel this declaration. (2) Change your name or home address. (3) No longer pay sufficient tax on your income and/or capital gains. Please note: If you pay Income Tax at the higher or additional rate and want to receive the additional tax relief due to you, you must include all your Gift Aid donations on your Self Assessment tax return or ask HM Revenue and Customs to adjust your tax code.
