ONNYEn Yeah everyone was well be-haved. Oh, except the 100+taken into custody. How can ucompare NT to Melbourne,Brisbane etc? Look at the pop-ulation difference then thenumbers recorded. NT nearlyhad more than the whole ofNSW, is it any wonder we holdall thewrong records?
n To Sam Franklin, Leanyer. So when u go to bed thewhole planet must stop mov-ing? None of my kids, grands,n great grands, are afraid offireworks, nor r my 3 dogs . . .X god’s sake, it was new year
n the whole planet celebratethat way. Go n live in thebush, then tell us about thenoise of thewild.Nick KRMA
n This goes out to all thewhingers and whiners outthere about fireworx on newyear’s: it is our right to letthem off, who do u think u rtelling us we can’t? Grow up.Just remember this is the NT.Mark, Roseberry
n A message to Sam Franklinof Leanyer, mate there are acouple of nights a year whereyou can expect not to get agood night’s sleep, New
Year’s Eve is one of them. Badluck youwant to sleep but themajority like to enjoy cele-brating the new year andnoisy teenagers have beenaround a lot longer than you.
ONEVERYTHINGn Had to drive into the cityfrom H/Doo on Wed, my littleboy by that time was seri-ously busting for the loo. Sto-pped in at a servo with my kidin tears running in with‘‘pleases’’ to use the toilet,
staff turned him away as itwas for ‘‘staff only’’. REALLY??Solemum
n These gangs shooting upSydney & Melbourne seem tobe mostly of Middle Easternor Asian descent. Quitefrankly I think they should bedeported back to where theyoriginally came from, regard-less if they were born here ornot. Sorry but we don’t wantthese people bringing theirpolitical baggage over here
and creating havoc trying todestroy our way of life.
n Abbott cuts tax breaks tosmall businesses by $5.5k butgives $16 million to Cadburys, owned by one of the largestUS corporations, Mondelez.Good one, ‘‘No Cuts Tony’’!
n It’s summer time in thesouthern hemisphere but thecold is strengthening the iceon the Antarctic pole. Stillthose idiots scream ‘‘warmingthreats’’. Get a life u morons.Nick KRMA
n Dear disgruntled of Stuart
Park, are you for real? You’reupset that someone is recycl-ing? I saw him and actuallyput my bin out so he couldhelp himself, I feel this way Iknow 100%ofmy recyclableswill be recycled! You need toget a life or get out of the sunand if it upsets you thatmuch, take recyclables to thecentre yourself! One man’strash, another’s treasure.
n Thank you to the kind per-son who handed in the EdHarry’s bag to Coles on NewYear’s Eve! Honesty is abun-dant in Palmerston . . . Grate-ful Gordon fromRosebery
LettersLETTER OF THE DAY
Heads remainplanted deepdown in sandI READ with disappointmentyour story on Batchelor andthe level of violence that stillexists in that town.
I served there for my lastposting as a long-servingbush copper as the officer incharge in 2007 (the stress ofthat place contributed to mydecision to leave the force).
I had worked in some busyplaces all across the Territ-ory but nothing can compareto that place.
I say disappointment as itseems not much has changedwith regards to support fromupper management for theguys on the ground.
I left amid what I best de-scribe as political head-in-the-sand approaches by pol-ice management.
When I left it was among a
cloud of accusations frommy direct report (all unsub-stantiated) that I was notdoing my job.
For the record, my partnerand I (two-man station backthen) achieved statisticsnever before seen in thattown (close to 100 people ta-ken into custody for offencesand/or protective custodyover a 10-month timeframe).
When I left I did so hopingthat the management andpoliticians would lookfavourably on the incomingmembers and help them withan increase in manning.
Sad that their head is stillin the sand and the currentmembers are forced to putup with this type of workenvironment.Clay Evans, Gove Cherubic twins Evelyn and Sophia Ruutz will mark their first birthday on January 7 Picture: DANIEL HARTLEY-ALLEN

Yeswe should legalisemarijuana, especially forpeoplewith chronic pain (likeme)— SEE BELOW
ONLEGALISINGMARIJUANAn Great move by the U.S.When are we going to followsuit? LiamofNighty
n Oh well, the fools have al-ready got the right to carryguns wherever they go — andto kill innocent people withalacrity. The USA is one tot-ally stuff+d country — andthey still insist on trying totell the rest of the world whatto think, what to say and howto act. The sooner our Gov-ernment stays away fromthese bible-bashing fools, thebetter it will be for all of us.
And to think that we have toput up with their thuggish, uneducated soldiers wander-ing the streets. Good on youLabor! olcoja
n It’s a dull argument — it’saddictive and people will suf-fer as much as if they smokedcigarettes or abused the grog. . . so many make poorchoices, that is why there isso much regulation . . . Camp-dog of Darwin and beyond
n Noting the overwhelmingsocial harm presented by leg-al drug use, I think some formof decriminalisation, to keep
prices manageable, and totarget effective health ed-ucation and services, would be a much betterway to handle yandi.Overpolicing of this rela-tively harmless drug drivesan artificial market ofscarce supply and insaneprices for super-strongstrains. For many NTusers, the crazy prices re-present the greatest harm
from their drug of choice.EwigeBlumenkraft of NT
n Yes we should legalise mar-ijuana, especially for peoplewith chronic pain (like me). Ithelps those recovering fromchemotherapy, cancer suf-ferers & the list goes on.Weed is good for pain & othermedical issues. We have moreproblems with alcohol-fuelledviolence & that’s legal. Just
take a look at Mitchell St Fri &Sat night. Also smoking ciga-rettes is legal, look how manyhealth problems came out ofthat! The government getstaxes out of alcohol & smo-kes. The government standsto gain more revenue out ofsales & distributing legalisedmarijuana. They can grant aspecial licence for growers(like they do with tobaccoplants).Kerriecats of Gray
n To loosen the joints, have ajoint. Jumbuck of Alphing-ton, Vic
n We have enough lazy fat
unemployable unwashed do-pers as it is, just take a look atthe insane mess Californiahas become. Old Territorianof Tennant Creek
n We have enough troublenow with crackpots off theirbrainless heads without mak-ing it legal.Bell ofWA
n Any money made by theGovernment will be morethan spent on mental healthtreatment. I see every day theresulting violence of combin-ing drugs and alcohol. Do notmake it easier to get. Omexaof Gray
