CAPTAIN’S NOTE

GOLF - Getting On a Lasting FriendshipGolf is a competitive sport played by people of a wide range of age and

ability. It is a wonderful game that usually retains its players throughout theirlifetime. While generally regarded as a gentle aerobic activity that does notrequire superb fitness to play; strength from the tee and fairway is an assetto getting the ball as close to the hole, and on the greens, muscle controland accuracy become paramount to putt the ball into the cup. Golf providesa good walk with nature and exercise for the vast majority of body muscles. It even stimulates the mind, as a good performance brings excitement andenjoyment that motivates one to return for another round.

Our club, at any time of year, provides a grand playing field for golf witha choice of four nines at your disposal. Your challenge of these 36 holesneed not be a solo effort as 4,261 golfers are part of the club’s 5,300 mem-bership. Since golf is also a game that breeds instant friendships, it is nearimpossible at KGNS to not make a new friend that widens your social circlewith each round of golf played.

Alas, I also must sadly report that several club members have voiced tome that they have noticed unwanted changes in the attitudes of those theymeet on the course. We all know the temperament of golfers is as diverseas their handicaps. Ernie Els is known to go about his job on the golf coursewith a gentle ease that has earned him the title the “Big Easy”, while Woodsdominates the game with a zeal that parallels his first name - Tiger. Despitetheir differing approach to the game, however, neither of these professionalsdemonstrates poor sportsmanship. For those golfers at KGNS who are overlyimpatient about slow play or easily irritated by poor golf ethics, please donot become a snobbish, violent golfer who is worse than the players you arecritical of.

Let me reaffirm that we want KGNS to remain the firendly and peacefulplace it has always been. The rules and regulations on golf are crystal clear— on control of play, mannerisms and ethics. KGNS, while known to be astrict imposer of discipline, treats all members equal andwe wish golfers to also treat each other as equals. Pleasebe friendly and add to the enjoyment of others’ game, rather than robbing them of a relaxing round of golf. Abrotherly reminder or friendly gesture is always betterthan becoming self absorbed in your game and risk theoffence of others. Most matters between golfers can easilybe settled on the course or, better still, over a cupof coffee or teh tarik after the game where alasting friendship could evolve.

The club strives to provide as manyfacilities as possible for the benefit ofmembers but please do not abuse theseprivileges. For example, internet accessand other vicinity of the clubhouse shouldbe utilised with consideration and not tothe annoyance of others. Let us togetherpreserve our dignity and friendliness atall times and let the club be our homeaway from home, a haven where we cango to forget our miseries, if any.

Happy New Year to everyone!

Song of anAncient Golfer

LETTER To The Editor

This is an original piece of poem entitled “Song of an Ancient Golfer”which I have written for my forthcoming birthday.

Praise to Thee, O God Almighty,For Thy infinite mercy.Merrily, steadily still standing at the teeBasking in Your glory - at seventy,I beseech Thee, O God! Grant me another ten,On second thought, make it twenty.

My heart is filled with gladness when I seeShimmering white balls in the morning sun,The distant flag that flutters in the breeze,A soft pitch, a gentle chip rolling to the cupAnd the smell of grass from the freshly cut green.Ecstasy and jubilation - when I line my putt, the hole quiversIn fearful anticipation.

The little aggravations I have learned to control,When a game becomes a journey without destination,The incorrigible slice - that original sin,The ghastly hooks - destroyer of the soul,The cause of bleeding hearts from tee to green,And blessed be those nasty holes that refuse to stay still.

When its time for me to tee-offFor the final fairway beyond the stars,With a tinge of sadness and a drop of tear,To my only son I bequeath,My S-Yard, my Scotty Cameron and my ball retriever,So that he may cherish LifeWith its murky ponds, unyielding hazards and unforgiving sands

And when, on a moonlight evening, you happen to seeAn ancient golfer on a distant greenFear not my friends, it’s only my Spirit! For this crazy game - a sport of Kings and scoundrels who cannot countIt is not just for the living to enjoy

The 6th is a slight dogleg-right hole. At 340 metres from theblue tees, this is not a long hole but to score well here, two accuratestrikes are needed. The drive has to clear the trees on the left andright and up ahead, two bunkers guard both sides of the fairway atthe 160 metre mark. Clear these hurdles and you have an openview of the green. Just be careful to avoid the bunkers on bothflanks leading to the putting surface.

Our priority and attention is also given to theKelana Course. Works are complete on the Sultan’sand Tun’s Nines e.g. drainage improvements made atHoles No. 14 and 15 (see accompanying photos3 & 4) . Also new and higher netting has been installedon the right side of fairway No. 3 for safety to the roadusers on the other side of the boundary.

The most ambitious project for 2007 wasthe buggy track for the Putra Coursecompleted in September. The track, besidesits obvious benefits to the golfer, is also a“smart track” in that it acts as “divert-and-drain-off” system during rain, therebyreducing the time to resume play by 15minutes!

The installation of multi-purse gazebo at the carpark adjacent to Hole No. 1. The gazebo serves asa bag drop and registration point for competitions. The newly-constructed body of water at the sameHole in place of the lateral drain (see accompanyingphotos 2 & 3). This is linked to the recentlyupgraded pond on the right of Hole 9, doubling upas a much-needed catchment area and reservoir. It is not, as some irate golfers remarked , a waterygravesite for trapping errant shots!

Course beautification has also been carried outand this include the main entrance to the clubhouse. The area adjacent to the 2nd Tee Box has been sprucedup and landscaping is in progress at the mid-way hutand strategic areas of the Putra Course (seeaccompanying photos 5 & 6). In pursuing the

beautification programme, the Sub-Committee hopegolfers will also contribute towards our course care,i.e. replacing divots, repairing pitch marks and rakingbunkers.

The major task that we have however, is theirrigation facility at the Putra Course (see schematicdiagram). When completed, it will end our water woesand will give KGNS an additional 40 million litres forstorage or use. Even so, with more water features itwill make the course more challenging to the golfers.

Note: Members wishing to air their views (onthe irrigation facility) may have a sit-in dialoguewith the Sub-Committee.

Excavation works to create two man-madeponds in the low-lying wooded area betweenTee Box No. 3 and Green No. 4. These two pondswill, in turn, link and feed to the existing pondjust left of Green No. 5.

Building of an earth bund at the other end ofthe lateral drain, near the tree line on the rightof Hole No. 5, to function as a catchment areaand giving a cascading “waterfall” effect.

Flooding of the existing lateral drain acrossHole No. 5 (which may require widening and/orre-modelling) to channel flow of water into theabove-mentioned two ponds.

The biggest challenge faced by the Sub-Committee is to be constantly mindful of the needto weigh cost benefits against available resources.Key questions:

Above 8. Course beautification - Buggy track and landscaped areaat mid-way hut, Putra Course.Left 9. Panoramic view of fairway #1 with upgraded pond viewedfrom Green #9 in the foreground and new catchment area/reservoir#1 at extreme right.

Presently, KGNS is dependent (with the goodoffices of MBPJ and developers) on water from thepond beside the newly-built Plaza Kelana Jaya forthe fairways and greens located at the far reachesof the Putra Course fronting Jalan SS 7/2. This loosearrangement, however, comes with a price. TheSub-Committee foresees supply disruptions duringany significant drought or change of heart by thePlaza residents.

To outsource work to contracted labour or deployin-house expertise? To plan the costly long term objective or cheapershort term demand? For instance, the request by trolley-toting golfers

for a constructed pathway to cut across and avoid thebuggy track looped around Tee Box 16 of the PutraCourse. Pulling a trolley along the track is a 35-40metre walk (isn’t it for this reason golf is played in thefirst place?) whereas a 10-metre shortcut wouldcertainly deprive one of the exercise - and cost KGNSanother financial expense! On a bright note, we wouldadvise all trolley bearers that kerbs on either side ofthe buggy track has been built up/sloped/stabilised,making it easy to get on or off.

The Sub-Committee is working towards makingthe course in KGNS easy on the eye, easy on thebody and easy on the money!

performance to the amazement of thecrowd.

There were also many contests heldfor family members and children toparticipate in, at RM5.00 per person.Among the favourites for golf enthusiastswere the Longest Drive, Crazy Putting,Best Bunker Shot and Chipping Contests. The kids had their fun also as theyparticipated in the Colouring Contest andMusical Chairs. The swimming contestscame on at about 4.00pm with Spoon andEgg, Coin Collection and First Bite of theApple. The greatest excitement for thechildren was when the 50 cent coins werethrown into the wading pool for them tocollect in the Coin Collection Contest.

What is a better way to getyourselves familiarised with KGNS – thewho’s, what’s and where’s within thecompound of our own beloved Club? To

cater to this, a Treasure Hunt contestspecially designed by Ms Low Ai Yun, whois a Treasure Hunter herself ensured thatthe 10 teams who also have sometherapeutic exercises to eliminate stress.

The highest collection was made bythe Ladies Committee’s Jumble Sale Stallwhere huge crowd gathered to get thebest stuff at rock-bottom prices. And itwas not surprising that everything wassold by 4.00pm!

On the whole it was a marvellousday. The Social and Recreation Sub-Committee wish to thank the convenors, volunteers and staff members for makingthis event a great success.

For starters, there was a quietstillness in the air, possibly dueto a recent incident of mudflow. Then, as we played through theirfairways and fast greens, cottontrees (pokok kapas) were seeneverywhere, even on their well-maintained grass! The caddieswere no help either, with their

cleaned and stowed for usetomorrow. Workday extensions, ifany, are occasioned, more often thannot, by emergencies, e.g. trees felledthroughout the course during severestorm, or final preparations for amajor golf event.

To a query by Berita Subang,Sivam reckons that, excepting thecontroversy over our greens in therun-up to the 1998 Malaysian Open,he has encountered little in the wayof “big problems” at KGNS. “Ourterrain”, he adds, “is generally quitegentle and this helps us in ourwork. Also, as an old club, we do nothave all these Bermuda types ofgrass for fairways and greenswhich are difficult to maintain in ourMalaysian climate.” On his futureplans after mandatory retirement at55, he hopes to continue enjoyinggood health and to find gainfulemployment, wherever available, inhis chosen line of work!

The father of 4 who hails fromShah Alam, Selangor, is one of 2overseers in the Course andGrounds Department, reporting toCourse Superintendent EncikShamsul Bahrin, and between thepair, they supervise a team ofabout 40 workers. For Sivam, atypical work day begins pre-dawn(or earlier, on competition days!),with muster at 6.30 a.m. anddispatch of field staff to theirscheduled assignments, e.g.,planting, weeding, bunker raking orcutting. Supervision aside, hisresponsibilities include upkeep ofmachinery and equipment and, when called upon, filling in for absentand/or indisposed workers.

Then, there is an hour’s break, taken at 11.30 a.m., and thereafterwork resumes until the end of day at2.30 p.m., but not before someadministrative chores are attendedto and machines and tools are

it all at KGNS, from its formative years under the presidency ofAlmarhum Y.A.B. Tun Hussein Onn right through to the present. Withthe distinction of being the longest serving staff at Subang,Sathasivam’s tenure dates back to 3 rd April 1973, the day he joinedthe workforce at age 18 as labourer/field hand. In the ensuing years,he moved progressively up the ranks to machine operator, handlingrough mowers, bush cutters etc, and later, tractors.
