Matric Final Assembly

As is customary every year we say goodbye to our Class 13’s before they begin to write their final exams, and this year it was no different. At the beginning of the year the Class 13’s welcomed the new Class 1’s into the school and at the end of

the year our Class 1’s bid them a farewell.

Herewith some beautiful visuals of the day (see our Facebook page for more).

What Happened to our Alumni

When did you attend CWS?

Kindergarten 1980 - 1982

Primary School 1983 - 1987

What stood out for you about the school?

I have distinct memories of copper eurythmy rods, stingers games, and tennisette - all of which are unrecognisable to the general public - I found out the hard way when I tried to play such games with non Waldorf people. Tennisette, by the way, is a game of miniature tennis invented by the Lilypudlians and later adopted by Rudolf Steiner as being good for the ethereal body, but only a small ethereal body. I remember dancing around the maypole, and our champion volleyball team which comprised of all eleven

members of the extended Toefy family. I crocheted all sorts of stuff, including a woollen face cloth for my Dad's birthday.

Who the hell washes their face with a woollen facecloth? Also, who washes their face with any sort of cloth at all?

How was Waldorf education for you?

Waldorf taught me an array of invaluable lessons. Imagine living a life where one did not learn how to crochet one’s own facecloths from wool one had sheared from sheep one had

befriended. I think this paints a pretty clear picture.

Waldorf has taught me that hippies are people too and that I might be one, but it’s not confirmed. I am showing strong tendencies according to some friends. Contrary to popular belief, Waldorf gave me strong mathematical abilities. To this day I can still calculate the number of guardian angels in a ball of mohair in

less than a minute.

What did you do after school?

Waldorf taught me how to be a clown. Ok, I’m a comic, but I’m pretty sure before they invented the word comedian it was just

called being a clown.

My first job out of school was on the Orange River as an assistant guide. On day one they handed me some black bags - I thought for rubbish. Turns out I was responsible for setting up the mobile toilet, and carrying the contents in the black

plastic bags. On my canoe. FOR FOUR DAYS. I quit after four trips. That’s way too much shit to put up with.

Later I studied organisational psychology at UCT (it’s like normal psychology but more organised). After graduating I travelled with a theatre company and a herd of donkeys through Africa. Together with my Waldorf background, this inspired

a foray into stand up comedy.

What are you up to now?

I am up to living a very full life, with a stand up career and a family which consists of myself my wife and our three children,

the most recent of which arrived just a few months ago. Things are busy!

What Happened to our Alumni

Can you tell us about any of your important life experiences, high points, successes?

High point was summating Kilimajaro (5965m).

Important life experiences: The Landmark Forum, Having Kids, Performing for

three people, a dog (and a pig) in Botriver.

Successes… I was voted top Xhosa - speaking Jewish Waldorf Educated Comedian in the World. It was a very fair vote that consisted of mainly one voter but has not yet been contested by any Xhosa,

Jewish, Waldorf or comedy body.
