WHAT IS AN EFFECTIVE VISUAL IDENTITY? » Clear semantic perception of the Insitution. » Should be bold, direct and memorable. » Unique in its own domain of visual idenities. » Communicate the insitution's persona. » Work well across media and scale. » Work both in black and white and in colour.

WHAT IS LOGO/ SYMBOL?The logo/ symbol is the focal point of any identity system and the key to its acceptance. Logos are signs, visual or word marks of identity designed for easy recognition in every part of the world, from international corporation, to charities, political parties, to community groups, Educational Institutions, etc.

Logo/ symbol help us distinguish one institution from another. The way a logo does this is by reflecting visually, the activities, values or attributes that represent an insitution best-in the view of the Institute's visionaries.

WHAT DO LOGOS MEAN?Their main purpose is to be informative (visually) to convey to whom or what something, someone, somewhere belongs. Insitutions which branch into various disciplines of their study domains, usually depict a vision, a visual statement through their logos; a statement with which one can identify the institution, hence are more abstract in nature. To depict a concept abstraction is preffered and the semantics of the form potrays the visual attributes.

BASE LINE FOR THE SYMBOL- SHRAMONAVARATH CHESTAYA: MEANING IS CEASELESS EFFORTS, CONTINUOUS STRIVING TOWARDS A GOAL.

Absent in the current identity is the full name of the Institute in Devnagri and Roman Scripts, integrated as a single unit. The objective was to preserve the line “Shramonavarath Chestaya” from the previous identity and create a complete new form (symbol) to suit the changing times.

PATNA. Sun god is worshipped in Patna, Bihar on the occasion of Chatth Puja. It is also known as "SuryaShasthi". People observe Chatth puja to thank the Sun for bestowing the bounties of life on earth, as also for fulfilling particular wishes. Culture is therefore envisaged through the visual element "Rising SUN" which is explored as a common thread through out the symbol. Sun is the center of all creation. A "Rising Sun" symbolizes a new awakening, a new begining, a fresh perspective. The Sun emits thousands of rays, sharp and straight. This thought gets visually translated to unviel a semi circle (rising Sun) and geometric forms, creating patterns. Colour pallette is warm, and inspired from the concept of a rising Sun. The name (pride) with the symbol is therefore upfront, clean, formal and has a professional look. The choice of the font is unique and purposefull. A conscious decision was made so that the current idenity is different from the exisiting NIT's in the country. This extraordinary formal quality of the font creates an image, of being crisp, sharp, and precise, in turn giving an identity, a pride, which is made visually recognizable.

PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION.Progressive is moving ahead and seeking for. Visually the rays of the Sun, emerge, radiate from the center, to spread, continuously, disseminating the light of knowledge. Education is depicted by the lotus. An abstraction of the lotus petals enriches the visual image by metaphors of blossoming of the five senses, through which we acquire knowledge. Five organs of knowledge, external factors, touch, taste , smell, sound and vision. At times, the three inner factors, mind, intellect and ego combine to make it eight.

PRIDE.NIT's are premier institutions of engineering and technology education in India. Pride here is associated with the name, NIT Patna. How this name is translated into a visual identity depends on the choice of the font which will represent the title, "NIT Patna".

Metamorphosis from Bihar college of engineering to National Institute of Technology Patna triggered the need for a new identity. A new name, a new face, a new begining, which was required to be translated into a visual langauage, the Institute could reckon with. The legacy of Bihar college of engineering is retained by the virtue of the sanskrit words "Shramonavaratha chestaya". This line (ceaseless efforts) is incorporated in the new symbol for the same purpose. Keywords…

Primary typeface Rotis Semi Serif (65 bold) was chosen for its cripsness, the professionalism it potrays through the rendering of its precise curves, it's intricate craft and sensitivity towards formalism. The chosen font is an expression of the institution’s character and reflects its values.

Secondary typeface Frutiger (55 Roman) and (65 Bold) should be used as a secondary typeface for all communications designed and published for Print communications.

Customised typeface A devnagri equivalent to Rotis Semi Serif was designed to compliment the logotype. Utmost care is taken to visually match the exact character of the Roman alphabet. A vector version (outline of the logotype) is provided in the digital file. The installable font file nitp.ttf is supplied to be used with microsoft word and other publishing softwares.

Secondary typeface Devnagri font DV-TTYogesh (Bold) was chosen to complement the Roman alphabet equivalent Frutiger (55 Roman) and 65(bold) chosen for body copy.

Logo configurations: The logo is available in different configurations and permits varied use considering a wide range of applications. Each configuration should be treated as a single unit the proportion and spacing of elements should not be altered at all.

NITP colour spectrumThe main Symbol colours are yellow, orange and red. Consistent use of these colours builds a brand recognization. YELLOW — Yellow is primarily the color of happiness, cheerfulness, expansiveness and lack of inhibition.It is the welcome warmth of the Sun and the glow of a spiritual halo. While calming and relaxing, the color does suggest a desire for change, that things are never quite at rest. RED — It is the impulse towards active doing, towards struggle, competition, and enterprising productivity. ORANGE — Orange is more symbolic of asia, not western. The Indianess is potrayed through the use of orange, which is a identity of the symbol.
