Issues and SolutionsOur actions can lead to

positive change.Issues, problems, issues! There are big and little issues and problems that concern a lot of people. Some problems and issues have obvious solutions while some issues and problems seem to have no solution.

In your Exhibition process you will get a chance to apply your skills as an action taker to some of these issues and problems. You will be choosing a real problem(either local or global) and carefully working through to a solution and take some action to help this issue or problem.

Working through this Exhibition journal will help you organize your time and resources to discover the best solution to your chosen issue or problem.

Good luck!

Assessment

By the end of this Exhibition we will have collected evidence of your learning in many different ways. This evidence will include:

Completed PP Student Exhibition Journal. Individual contribution to group Spring

Notes Peer evaluations for co-operative learning. Ongoing individual reflections/evaluations. Persuasive writing piece. Final project/presentation, action and

reflection.

Do different materials have different effects?

What effects the ozone layer most?

How does high pressure dirty water effect pollution?

State the Issue or Problem• Brainstorm real life issues or problems that you think need a

solution. Look around you and think about the problems that exist in your school, your neighborhood, Zurich, Switzerland, or elsewhere in the world.

Why is this a problem/issue?

• You have chosen this problem for a reason.• How does it affect your life or those around you?• How does it affect your feelings or emotions?• Why do you think it is important?

Why do you feel a responsibility for this problem/issue?

Inner Journey

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Environment

Nuclear/atomic energy

Atomic power plants affect the society by the pollution they create. It affects the life around with the greenhouse effect.

This affects my feelings a lot because if something goes wrong it might explode. And that is scary.

I think this is important because an nuclear power plant exploding is the same as an atomic bomb. This is happening now in Japan.

REFLECTION1Our actions can lead to

positive change. You have chosen a topic. •Has it changed from your first thoughts? How and why? •Are you happy with this development? •You have been put in a group. Who is in the group? •Why are they in your group? •Do you think the group can work co-operatively and effectively? How and why?•What did you think about your first week of collaboration?

My topics have changed from my first thought from Pollution to Nuclear energy. I am happy with my development because I think it is a better topic to research. My group members a Leo , Lukas , Niklas and myself. They are in my group because they also chose something to do with nuclear energy. I think I can work cooperatively with my group because our brains think like a magnet together. I think my first week of collaboration worked well because we have a lot of facts straight. It is also because we have found what we each will do at home!

Developing Lines of Inquiry

You have defined your problem/issue in relation to Form, Function, Causation andResponsibility.Look at the remaining two Concepts to clarify your lines of inquiry

Connection How is it connected to other issues/problems?

Perspective What are other points of view?

Searching and Collecting

Our actions can lead to positive change.

This is connected to real life with the big incident in fukushima in Japan. It is also connected to the incident in the past like Chernobyl.

The other prospective of nuclear energy is that nuclear energy is very effect and creates a lot of energy every year. While the process is going no nuclear pollution is created. This is the other perspective.

Our Process – Searching and Collecting

People to whom we spoke:

Name: Orglagh

From this person we learned

Surveys we created and distributed

The group surveyed:Number of people surveyed:

Important conclusion we can make from the results:

Important information from our advisor:

We learnt a lot from Miss Orglagh because she was very into Fukushima and had a lot to tell to us. Like the variables on nuclear energy.

We surveyed the whole 5th grade. It was very useful because we found out what they thought about Nuclear energy. We found out that 54% said yes, it’s okay if they make it safer.

Our advisor was very helpful because he had good comments and ideas. He also talked about how we could make a change

Page 11: Nik's Exhibition Journal

Process Reflection

These are things I thought about our topic before BUT now I think differently

I think that my thought about my subject has not changed but I still have a bit light on the other side.

The are ideas I had about our problem/issue before AND I still have now:

The problems from before I think are solved because we are not arguing like before.

These are things about our problem/issue that still challenge us and we still wonder about

Things I still wonder about would be How to make a Nuclear Power plant more safe.

We would like our audience to leave our presentation with these “BIG UNDERSTANDINGS”

Against nuclear energyProud about being itHappy about the things they learntHave an open mined about nuclear energy

Synthesizing and Connecting

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Think of Solutions.ACTION!

Brainstorm a wide range of ideas that could help solve this problem/issue

Here is your chance to be creative. Write down all possible answers. Do not discard any yet because this is your chance to start thinking outside the Box to find a creative solution. Be creative, unusual, fanciful, practical and obvious. S T R E T C H your imagination!

Our actions can lead to positive change.

CHOOSING ACTIONIs your action S.M.A.R.T.?

Specific

Measureable

Attainable

Relevant

Time-bound

Specific •Is your action clear•Does everyone understand about how your action will happen?•Have you covered 5 “W”s and the “H”?Measurable•How will you know your action has worked?Attainable•Will you be successful taking this action?Relevant•Does this action actually relate to your problem?Time-bound•Will you have enough time to implement your action?

We can make a

difference

Page 14: Nik's Exhibition Journal

Make your Action Plan

How will your action affect your problem? It will effect our problem that people will start

to think about it and ask for more info to make a difference.

Who needs to be convinced?

Everyone how dose not know about nuclear energy should be convinced.

What objections might you come up against?

Some objections we might come up against would be someone for nuclear energy

How can you overcome those objections?

We have not met people that are for nuclear energy which is lucky.

What resources will you need? We will need resources like YouTube, a

website for the blog and a lot of information

Who can help you? Who could help us would be Wayne, a friend of my dad for the blog

Where should you begin? We should begin sending an email to the

middle school What will be your next step? Our next step will be making the video

Who will do what to achieve your action? Leo Lukas and me are starting the video and

Niklas is doing the E-mail

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Page 15: Nik's Exhibition Journal

We can make a difference

What our group did for our action was to make a viral video. This means that we made a video which is sent then they look at it and hopefully we persuaded them. At the end of our mail we persuaded them to send it to more that’s how it becomes a viral. With this we also made a website to go with our video for more information. I think this was the best way to make a change because we changed there mind about nuclear energy.

Page 16: Nik's Exhibition Journal

My Final Message Is …

My final message is that nuclear energy is bad because I have researched nuclear energy and its effect on the world. I have also used various websites for this where it is stated clearly. I really liked exhibition because we could actually make a change to this world we live in. I thought this could not be reached in such a little amount of time. I think our message was crossed to the audience even I was not there at exhibition time. That is why I think our group pretty well got the message across. I think exhibition is the most fun unit in fifth grade!
