Issues and SolutionsOur actions can lead to

positive change.Issues, problems, issues! There are big and little issues and problems that concern a lot of people. Some problems and issues have obvious solutions while some issues and problems seem to have no solution.

In your Exhibition process you will get a chance to apply your skills as an action taker to some of these issues and problems. You will be choosing a real problem(either local or global) and carefully working through to a solution and take some action to help this issue or problem.

Working through this Exhibition journal will help you organize your time and resources to discover the best solution to your chosen issue or problem.

Good luck!

Environment and Animals

When people destroy the environment, they destroy a lot more.

They destroy animals’ homes, beauty, and sometimes even peoples ‘beliefs

When people damage the environment, they destroy their own home, the world.

Animals too will lose their homes, and as everyone knows, animals can’t really live without a habitat. Destroying the environment is destroying a lot more.

REFLECTION 1Our actions can lead to

positive change. You have chosen a topic. •Has it changed from your first thoughts? How and why? •Are you happy with this development? •You have been put in a group. Who is in the group? •Why are they in your group? •Do you think the group can work co-operatively and effectively? How and why?•What did you think about your first week of collaboration?

Yes, as a matter of fact, I first wasn’t sure what topic I was going to choose. I was thinking about the environment or child abuse or animals in danger. I just wasn’t so sure what I was interested about. I have always thought about animals in danger, and what us humans can do to make it stop. In the end I decided to take endangered animals. I am happy with the topic I chose. I mostly chose the topic because I wanted to make a change. I am in a group of two people. Chantal and me. That was pretty astonishing, I’d never had thought that that was going to happen. Chantal is in my group because she wanted to research the same thing as me.

Our Process – Searching and Collecting

People to whom we spoke:

Name: Mr. Allen

From this person we learned:

What we have to get across to the audience to makeour presentation successful.

Name: WWF

From this person we asked:

If it is illegal to sell tiger parts, we got links to websites and a lot of information.

Surveys we created and distributed

The group surveyed: all the students in grade fiveNumber of people surveyed: about 80 people

Important conclusion we can make from the results:

Now we know how many people are aware of our issue and this will help us plan our action.

Important information from our advisor:

How we can raise awareness, what to do for the presentation, if we shall make a poster and who is an expert that knows everything about our issue.

Page 10: Charotte's Exhibition Journal

Process Reflection

These are things I thought about our topic before BUT now I think differently:

Before I thought that tigers are only hunted because of their skin. But now, I know that tigers are not only hunted for their skin, they are hunted for medicine, skin, bones, teeth and claws.

The are ideas I had about our problem/issue before and I still have now:

We thought of raising awareness by making bookmarks, presentations, and hanging up posters.

These are things about our problem/issue that still challenge us and we still wonder about:

Is it illegal to sell tiger parts?

Where do people hunt tigers most?

We would like our audience to leave our presentation with these “BIG UNDERSTANDINGS”

We want our audience to think that endangered tigers is a big issue, and how they can help tigers to stop them from being hunted.

Synthesizing and Connecting

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Page 11: Charotte's Exhibition Journal

Think of Solutions.ACTION!

Brainstorm a wide range of ideas that could help solve this problem/issue

Here is your chance to be creative. Write down all possible answers. Do not discard any yet because this is your chance to start thinking outside the box to find a creative solution. Be creative, unusual, fanciful, practical and obvious. S T R E T C H your imagination!

The children, teachers, everybody!

What objections might you come up against?

That people won’t be able to read

How can you overcome those objections?

We will give the bookmarks to higher classes

What resources will you need?

We will need a lot of information

Who can help you?

Our advisor

Where should you begin?

With our research

What will be your next step?

Our action

Who will do what to achieve your action?

We will both communicate together and make a plan achieve our goal

Our actions can lead to positive change.

REFLECTIONActing and SharingWe can make a difference

Our action turned out pretty well! We made lots of bookmarks, and also a few posters. Everyone liked them, and lots of people decided to take one after the presentation. The laminated ones will be placed in the library, for students to take for checking out books. My little brother (Mathias) in second grade, was fascinated by our bookmarks, and he asked me if he could have the rest to hand them out in his class. This made our action even more successful, and in no time at all, students were talking about endangered tigers in the whole school! Way to go!

Exhibition Night Reflection

Our actions can lead to positive change.

The exhibition night went well, really well! Our presentation time was in the third period. At the end of our presentation, nearly everyone came up to us to tell us that we did a great job. Even Mrs. Stiebert watched our presentation, and she came up to shake our hands, a great honor.

My Final Message is…

Do ANYTHING to save the tigers! Adopt a tiger, donate money too websites supporting tigers, visit tiger parks AND make other people aware! Once you’ve done that, I will congratulate you! Please try to make a change for tigers. For more information:www.WWF.org
