Michael Moodie Michael KennedyMoodie has been working as a graphic designer and art director in a creative agency setting for the past 9 years. Bringing a tactile approach to his projects, he incorporates hand drawn lettering and illustration to bring his work to life. Moodie has worked with clients such as Warner Brothers, Adobe, Amazon, Dreamworks, McDonalds, Monster and many more. His work has been published and featured in several books and magazines across the world.

Raised in Seattle and schooled in New York, Kennedy studied graphic design with an emphasis on typography. He deepened his knowledge of letterforms and design working at GIRVIN, under the renowned calligrapher Tim Girvin. Kennedy has worked on lettering specific projects for clients such as Kettle Brand, Adobe, Focus Features and Walmart.

Designed for all skill levels, we have created a course to guide you through the fundamentals of hand lettering. Whether it’s a team building exercise for people who have never lettered more than a thank you note, or afocused class for designers who want to add a new skill to their toolkit, we can adapt to offer a customized course to suit all levels.

Hand Lettering Workshops

Our main exercise walks through the process step by step from conceptualizing a piece to, adding the final touches. Everyone will leave having created a piece of their own and with the knowledge of how to take their lettering to the next stage.

Hand Lettering Workshops

Each participant receives a lettering workbook to follow along and take home for reference in the future. The workshop also includes live demonstrations, a digital presentation, and group or individual review at the end of the workshop, (time dependent).

Nightshift was asked by Adobe to create the branding and visual assets for their 2020 Experience Makers Award ceremony hosted in Las Vegas. We worked with the team at Adobe to land on a lettering style that felt brushed and yet voluminous with splatter paint accents to speak to the uniqueness of the award winners. Incorporating the Adobe brand colors mixed with a black and gold central theme, we were able to create a sense of luxury and prestige while honoring the artistic flare of the Adobe brand.

From the back of a van to one of the world’s most unique potato chip brands, Kettle Brand has been dedicated to creating unique, savory, and all-natural chips. While at GIRVIN, Kennedy was involved in proposing and developing hand drawn assets for the back of their bags, focusing on their long standing sustainability initiatives.These inspired the development of a whole visual language and library of over 300 type and illustration assets. Extensive brand standards were developed to accompany the new visual language, which was usedfor web, social, packaging, bus and vehicle wraps, projection campaigns and event tents.

Initially the design was used for recruiting event signage, at conventions and job booths but became a staple in the agency’s culture and was installed as a reminder to everyone on the team. The mural wall is now used for team building event photoshoots, interviews and podcast recordings.
