My NICE scholarship project

Implementing shared decision making in thecare of people with osteoarthritis of the hip

or knee in County Durham

Background to project• Problems that need addressing

– Osteoarthritis is common and a major source of disability– Increasing incidence of hip & knee osteoarthritis and number

of replacements– Large geographical variation in joint replacement rates not

related to population need– Underutilised, effective interventions: exercise, weight loss– Unnecessary orthopaedic referrals

• Role of shared decision making– Alternative to severity thresholds in managing access and

addressing unwarranted variation– Clinicians broadly supportive but not widely implemented– Method of implementation of clinical guidance
