Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral, used for its strong and incombustible properties. Due to its thermal stability and high heat resistance, this durable material was widely used in the past for the fireproofing and insulation of buildings.

Asbestos is now banned from use in the UK due to health risks. Loose silica dust when inhaled has the potential to cause chronic lung diseases including diffuse pleural thickening, asbestosis, mesothelioma and cancer.

It is estimated that more than 5 million tonnes of asbestos were imported to the UK prior to it being banned. It is likely that over 1.5 million commercial, industrial, public and domestic buildings contain asbestos materials.Asbestos cement was used up until 1999 in a variety of different premises and materials.

Asbestos was extensively used as a building material in the UK from the 1950’s through to the mid 1980’s. It was used for a variety of purposes and was ideal for fireproofing and insulation. Any building built before 2000 (houses, factories, offices, schools, hospitals etc) can contain asbestos.

Asbestos materials in good condition are safe unless asbestos fibres become airborne, which happens when materials are damaged. There are three main types of asbestos which were commercially mined for their useful properties:

• Chrysotile (White)

• Amosite (Brown)

• Crocidolite (Blue)

There are also three less commonly found types of asbestos: -

• Anthophylite

• Tremolite

• Actinolite

Asbestos legislation here in the UK puts a ‘duty to manage’ on property owners to manage asbestos containing materials within buildings.

What is the ‘duty to manage’ asbestos and who has it?

This duty applies to owners and occupiers of commercial premises (such as shops, offices, industrial units etc.) who have responsibility for maintenance and repair activities. In addition to these responsibilities, they also have a duty to assess the presence and condition of any asbestos containing materials. If asbestos is present, or is presumed to be present, then it must be managed appropriately. The duty also applies to shared parts of some domestic premises.

Here at NIC we can arrange for surveys to be completed of yours or your client’s premises. Once the survey is complete we can also assist with the compilation of an asbestos risk register and management plan.

What is an asbestos survey?

An asbestos survey is an effective way to help you manage asbestos in your premises by providing accurate information about the location, amount and type of any asbestos containing materials often referred to as ‘ACMs’. While not a legal requirement, it is recommended that you arrange a survey if you suspect there are ACMs in your premises. It is considered good practice to have an asbestos survey carried out so you can be absolutely sure whether asbestos is present or not.

What is an asbestos risk register and management plan?

The asbestos risk register is a key component of the required plan on how you will manage any asbestos found, or presumed to be in your buildings. The management plan must contain current information about the presence and condition of any asbestos in the building.

The asbestos risk register will therefore need to be updated on a regular basis usually annually; again we can help you with this. This normally involves regular inspection to the check the current condition of asbestos materials, deletions to the register following removal of asbestos, additions to the register should new areas be surveyed, and changes to the register where materials are found to have deteriorated.

Training for Building Occupiers / Staff

NIC can offer training for any staff on your premises where asbestos works are required. We are able to give you staff an understanding of asbestos, what it is, where it can be found in buildings and the techniques used to remove the asbestos safely. This will hopefully alleviate any fears they may have with regard to asbestos.

The removal of asbestos forms the core part of business at NIC. We have been a fully licenced removal contractor for over 25 years giving us a wealth of knowledge and experience in the industry.

We can offer advice and provide solutions to all your asbestos related problems. We provide packages tailored to suit individual requirements. We are committed to excellence and are dedicated to providing a high quality service with safety at the forefront of our agenda.

Using a range of techniques and specialist equipment, our experience a fully trained team reduces the risk of asbestos by removing it or making it safe in a controlled manner.

Our sites are subject to internal and independent audits to ensure that we strive for the highest standard of work possible, carried out using safe working methods.

Asbestos Encapsulation

In some instances it may not be necessary or appropriate to remove the asbestos, in this instance encapsulation would be the preferred method. Encapsulation usually involves the protection of asbestos using high performance coatings or indeed ‘overboarding’using a range of products.Any encapsulation works would be clearly labelled using asbestos warning labels. Whilst this option safely encapsulates the asbestos, it is vital to remember that the asbestos will still be present and can be disturbed by future works. It is therefore essential that the asbestos continues to be managed on an on-going basis. Over time, it may still be necessary to completely remove any material containing asbestos.

Scaffolding & Asbestos

Where the asbestos works require the construction of a purpose built scaffold structure, this can in some instances require the use of a licensed asbestos scaffolding contractor. NIC have several HSE licensed scaffolding contractors who are approved for this element of works should it be required.

The Right Insulation Specification can Prevent Condensation on Cold Surfaces

Specifying a sufficient insulation thickness with a good vapour barrier is the most effective means of controlling condensation and limiting corrosion on cold pipes, ducts and chillers. It should be noted that sufficient thickness would be required in order to keep the surface temperature above the dewpoint temperature of the ambient air. NIC will be able to advise the most appropriate specification for this.

Better energy efficient living through insulation!

Trace Heating

Through our partners NIC are able to offer a complete surface heating package to complement our insulation service.

We can assist from design through to supply, installation and full commissioning of trace heating systems.

NIC was established in 1981 predominantly as a thermal insulation contractor. Over the years we have developed modern methods for the manufacture and installation of insulation. Our in house fabrication facility is equipped with the latest technology, enabling us to provide high quality products at very competitive prices.

Why is insulation important?

Here at NIC we can help you to design and install insulation systems that will immediately conserve energy by reducing heat loss or gain. This will enable pipe work and plant to be maintained at.

NIC can offer advice and assistance to establish a suitable specification to ensure the process temperature can be achieved. It is important that insulation type and thickness is suitable and sufficient to limit the heat loss/gain specific to your requirements.

Insulation offers a reduction in the surface temperature of pipe work/plant to a safer level making the environment safer for workers.

The current Regulations place a legal duty on employers to provide information, instruction and training to any of their employees who are likely to be exposed to asbestos as part of their work.

The three main types of information, instruction and training are: asbestos awareness training.

Training for non-licensable asbestos work – i.e. the type of work described in HSE’s Asbestos essentials training for licensable asbestos work.

partition systems

Suspended Ceilings

Here at NIC we install a range of demountable and re-locatable partitioning systems to suit all needs and requirements. All systems and manufactured and installed to the highest standard, colour ranges are powder coated and the systems are fully tested to the relevant British Standards.

Whatever your building or refurbishment project demands, whether it be fire or acoustic performance or a multifunctional specification, NIC will tailor make a system designed specifically to suit the purpose and within your allocated budget.

We work alongside one of the UK’s leading distributors of interior building products to the construction industry. We are able to offer a comprehensive range partitioning systems from leading manufacturers. Whatever your particular requirements are we will find a product to suit your needs.

Here at NIC we install all types of suspended ceiling systems, we have products to suit every requirement. Our management team have lots of fresh and innovative ideas to enable us to create a modern working environment.

In the right situation, a suspended ceiling offers some real advantages over the permanent fixed ceilings. Ducts, pipes and cables hidden above a dropped ceiling remain accessible for repair or modification and suspended ceilings are better sound barriers than drywall ceilings. In the event of a water leak a suspended ceiling can mean the difference between a costly, time-consuming repair job and a minor inconvenience.

We are able to offer a comprehensive range of mineral, metal and plaster ceiling tiles, concealed grid, lighting, fixings and exposed grid from leading manufacturers. Whatever your particular requirements are we will find a product to suit your needs.

Don’t hesitate to contact us for advice and a free quotation including full design service.

roofingThe majority of a structure’s heat loss goes through the roof. A poorly insulated roofing system will send your energy bills the same way.

At NIC, our experienced roofing team will remove and dispose of your old, corrugated cement roof and replace it with a specialist, made to measure, thermally insulated roof panels. This includes flashings, guttering and other accessories required.
