A Brief Note on Concordance Tables

To facilitate the adoption and use of any revised statistical classification, it is

necessary to formulate the explicit correspondences between the categories in the revised

classification with those used in the earlier version. From the view point of comparability of

time series, a one-to-one correspondence should exist between NIC-87 and NIC-98, so that

each category under NIC-87 can be uniquely linked to its counterpart under NIC-98. This

condition of one-to-one correspondence could not be met in the two classifications because

of two reasons viz. (a) there is a change in the structure of NIC-1987 vis-a-vis NIC-1998, the

former being four-digit classification whereas the later is a five-digit one (b) some of the

four-digit groups of NIC-1987 have been sub-divided and distributed to two or more five-

digit sub-classes of NIC-1998. Since one-to-one correspondence of convertibility is not

possible in certain cases, the criteria of pre-dominant activity has been applied in building upthe concordance tables, in which the activity has been shown at a place where its major part

can be classified instead of showing partially against more than one activities. On the above

principles, certain 3-digits of NIC-87 may have been shown against a four-digit level of

NIC-98. To enable the convertibility, some of the four-digits of NIC-1998 have been clubbed

together and against them more than one three-digits of NIC-1987 have been indicated.

Likewise in the concordance table for converting NIC-98 based data into NIC-87 data,

appropriate combination of 2/3/4-digit level of NIC-98 have been shown against two-digit

level of NIC-87.
