Taking in charge: Niamh McGowan has worked with residents’ associations and the Council to ensure that estates are taken in charge. Since 2009 six estates in Ashbourne have been taken in charge: Deerpark; Baldara Court; Alderbrook; Johnswood; White Ash Park and Racehill Lodge. Cllr. McGowan’s ongoing efforts in Ashewood will see this estate being taken in charge in the very near future, with Brindley Park, Racehill Manor, Millbourne Hall and the Ashbourne Town Centre following.

Planning: On Meath County Council, Niamh McGowan has worked to ensure proper land zonings, helping to attract investment in the county. It should be the needs of the local area that decide what is in a local area plan. Proper planning and sustainable development cannot be developer-led.

New school campus: Niamh McGowan has welcomed the announcement of the new school campus to the north of the town. This exciting development will accommodate the new second level school and two primary schools. Key to its success will be the access routes to minimise traffic disruption and to ensure safe pedestrian and cycling access.

Youth facilities: As Cathaoirleach, Niamh McGowan obtained a commitment of a skate park for Ashbourne and arranged for the transfer of land on Hunter’s Lane for the provision of a scout den. Cllr. McGowan also secured release of €1m from Meath County Council for the redevelopment of the Community Centre. Niamh is a volunteer and committee member working to bring a Youth Café to Ashbourne and is committed to the development of a public park and improved playground facilities for the town.

Traffic and public transport: Niamh McGowan has prioritised traffic safety and public transport provision. This includes new bus stops in Ashbourne, new pedestrian crossings (Johnswood and Curragha) and preventing estates from becoming rat-runs (Alderbrook/Garden City). She is committed to improving facilities for bus users in tandem with the development of the main street.

New electoral area for Ashbourne

The local election boundaries have changed and the new Ashbourne Municipal District, with Ashbourne as its base, includes the electoral areas of Ardcath, Ardmulchan, Donaghmore, Kentstown, Kilbrew, Rathfeigh, Skreen, Stamullen and Tara. The Ashbourne Municipal District will have six Council seats.

Niamh McGowan says

“ On 23 May 2014, it will be important for the people of Ashbourne and surrounding areas to ensure that they have an experienced and effective representative on the Council, so that their needs are not overlooked, as happened in the past.”
