3 MECHANICAL DESIGN COMPONENTS

3.1 Q3-SERVICE CASES WEDGE MASTER SHELF

Problem Statement

The dimension from the original shelf design was fixed. The shelf was unable to slide and adjust on a

wedge key rail attached on the case. Engineering, manufacturing and marketing Leads requested

an engineering solution to design a high performance shelf.

Shelf was unable to adjust. It

was causing a huge labor

cost and time for assembling.

Solution Provided

Delivered and presented a new concept design to engineering leads.

Designed and built two prototypes with clearance for adjustment.

New design was able to slide on wedge key rail.

Reduced to 3 total parts from original 7 parts for shelf.

Prototypes were built and applied on Q3-DV 22.5 Case. New design brought out flexibility and high

performance to slide and adjust after attaching on the key rails of the display case. New design also

contained high strength for supporting 230 lb. force load. It also provided high visibility for customers

to see through products under the shelf.

Result

Engineering solution fulfilled and approved by Engineering, manufacturing and marketing

departments. Design concept can be applied on all wedge-series cases for future improvement.

3.2 Q3 SERIES CASE ALIGNMENT ISSUE

Problem Statement

The Brackets for case-to-case alignment did not align properly due to whole case sheet metal

bending factors and assembly errors on manufacturing factory. Manufacturing building line required

extra time putting two cases together. Request was received to deliver an engineering mechanism

solution. No constrains were mentioned.

Solution Provided

Note: The size of original design was 1.1’ x 1.03’ 2.166’ and new design should maintain inside the

front cover.

Four concept designs were created after model cases investigation:

Design 1:

Reduced holes on right

side to. 187ø. Created ‘X’

slot on left bracket

Design 2:

Reduced holes on right

side to. 187ø. Created total

of 7 holes on left bracket,

with .252 inch few from

center and 60 degree

angle each

Design 3:

Reduced lower holes on

both side to .375ø. Created

.187ø X.3 horizontal slot on

right bracket and .187ø X.3

vertical slot on left bracket

Design 4:

Created new bracket

with 2 round slots.

Connecting 2 brackets

with a beam. Add

washer to increase up

down distance.

Results

Design 3& 4 got approved from engineering leads and were submitted to fabricate prototypes.

Testing and review was pending.

3.3 R3 SERVICE MASTER SHELF AND FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS (FEA)

Problem Statement

Original shelf contained 7 sub-parts. Engineering department requested an engineering solution that

to reduce total sub-parts, cost and assembly time.

Solution Provided

Designed a new master shelf with reducing total sub-parts from 7 to 1 piece, materials in galvanize

and stainless steel.

Old-New Shelf Comparison:

Finite Element Analysis (FEA):

Shelf Material: 2750008, .071 MIN G60 GL. Simulating as the shelf was fixed on two brackets at the back and received a

230lbf evenly down on the surface. Yield Stress was at 38 ksi and it passed the FEA

Results

Master shelf got approved from engineering and manufacturing lead. 4’, 5’ and 6’width with 10” and

12” length solid and glass see-through R3 case shelfs were created base on the master shelf.

Concept was also applied on other model cases’ master shelf projects.

New design built in one piece of

sheet metal and provided same

strength as the old design. Assemble

time and labor cost was greatly

reduced.

3.4 BAKERY CASE SERVICE MASTER SHELF

Problem Statement

Original shelf contained 7 sub-parts. Engineering department requested an engineering solution that

to reduce total sub-parts, cost and assembly time.

Solution Provided

Applied the same design concept as R3 case master shelf but followed all constrains as of the

original BC shelf.

Old-New Shelf assembled on Bakery Case:

Results

Master shelf got approved from engineering and manufacturing lead. 14 child shelves were created

base on the master shelf. Concept was also applied on other model cases’ master shelf projects.

4 PROJECT MANAGEMENT

4.1 WIRE RACK PROJECT

Problem Statement

Wire Racks were fabricated by other companies. Engineering department found a new supplier and

would like to compare the cost. However, most wire rack engineering drawings was out of dated

and did not have 3D model. It made confusion for new supplier to follow direction. Engineering

department required to complete a detail package for all wire racks included engineering drawing,

DXF and IGS files. Only wire rack part numbers were listed in corresponding case type, 3D models,

PDF, DXF and IGS were missing.

Solution Provided

Checked with PLM system Team Center and located existing wire racks. Prepared an excel sheet and created a

checklist for each wire racks.

Created all missing 3D models, DXF, IGS and PDF with updated information on each individual wire

rack.

Completed excel sheet and zip files for each cases.

Results

New Supplier was able to follow the package and offered their price to engineering department.

Engineering department compared the cost difference between two suppliers and pended for

further decision.

4.2 MISSED WIRE DIAGRAMS ON PLM SYSTEM

Problem Statement

Company swiped to different PLM system at 2013 and majority of the engineering data were missing

or not up-to-date. Wire Diagrams of many display cases did not exist on the new PLM system.

Manufacturing factory was not able to receive updated wire diagrams, which created a huge

amount of building errors. Whole production process was delayed and it caused extra labor cost and

time as scheduled.

Solution Provided

Assisted electrical engineer to locate corresponding wire diagrams in company’s in-network storage

driver. Created excel sheet to identify which wire diagrams were missing on PLM system. Created PRs

and assigned ECNs on PLM system. Updated over 100 wire diagrams with new engineering template.

Uploaded all updated wire diagrams in .pdf formats on PLM system.

Results

Successfully delivered all first priority wires diagrams to PLM system. Manufacturing production lines

were able to get updated drawings on their system.

4.3 JOINT TRIM CHECK SHEET PROJECT

Problem Statement

Manufacturing factory required to follow joint trim check sheet when putting display cases together.

Joint trim check sheet gave details information for all essential parts such as trims’ part numbers,

quantities, and direction where the corresponding joint trims located. Engineering department and

BoM specialists reported many check sheets were outdated. Trim part numbers, quantities were

incorrect and misleading. It made new employees hard to follow.

Solution Provided

Worked with engineering configuration team and manufacturing engineer and located outdated

check sheets.

Updated over 30 engineering drawings for Joint Trim Checklist

sheets

Created IN and Out List for each check sheets and submitted to BOM Specialists

Results

Fulfilled Engineering and Manufacturing department needed. Responsible to update check

sheet when new parts are designed and provide in and out list for engineering configuration

team.
