NEXUS | Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce2
September brings back happy memories of recess, a great field trip, and that time that Donny kicked the kickball right over the school fence and through the window of a car! Okay, that last memory wasn’t a great one if you were the car owner, but as a third grader it still ranks as a great memory for me.
Here at the Chamber back to school may not mean new clothes and class schedules, but it does mean a critical examination of how our K-12 and higher
education partners are preparing our future workforce. Your chamber is very engaged with our area school districts, colleges, and universities, serving on boards and advisory groups, to make sure that our educational objectives are aligned with our future workforce needs. We want to make sure that our educational partners are
preparing our kids with the math, reading, and global understanding skill sets that make for a great, talented, future worker.
This means paying attention to not only school curriculum and testing standards, but making sure that your Chamber’s voice is heard on school board candidates. School matters, today more than ever, and your Chamber is committed to making sure that the future workforce is ready for employment and ready to help our members success in a globally competitive environment.

It’s time to think GREEN in more ways than one! Earlier this year the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce was excited to announce a new partnership with Ramsey County and the Solid Waste Management Coordinating Board (SWMCB) to advance the SWMCB ongoing mission to increase the efficiency and environmental effectiveness of the Twin Cities metro region's solid waste management system. As a proud recipient of a Community Power grant from the SWMCB through Ramsey County, SPACC undertook a new initiative to help businesses in the East Metro incorporate environmentally responsible purchasing and disposal decisions in their day-to-day operations. By giving businesses the information and tools needed to make these decisions, we can help reverse the ever-growing waste stream and protect the environmental health of the Twin Cities metro area.
Our first step was to highlight the helpful resources available from the SWMCB through RethinkRecycling.com, an online guide for waste and recycling in the Twin Cities for residents and businesses. This comprehensive online resource includes valuable recycling tips, best practices for business recycling, information on specialized recycling services and much more.
Another great online resource is BizRecycling, a website sponsored by Ramsey and Washington Counties that provides free resources and assistance to East Metro businesses that want to learn more about recycling opportunities for paper, bottles, cans, food and other organic waste. Their goal is to promote job growth and protect the environment by helping schools, restaurants, healthcare facilities and other local businesses recycle more.
NEXUS | Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce4
In addition to highlighting the great resources already available in the East Metro to facilitate recycling and other sustainable reuse practices, SPACC has been leveraging its network to encourage the business community to do even more. We have many members doing great things in the sustainability field and we will be highlighting them in the coming months to show great examples for other businesses to follow. We also want to encourage the development of new and innovative ways to incorporate recycling and reuse in day-to-day business practices, particularly when it saves money in addition to benefiting the environment. This is how you create change that is truly sustainable. To that end we created a contest to showcase great ideas that have been implemented in small businesses to promote reuse and recycling. SPACC will award cash prizes to the individual or groups with the most innovative and effective solutions.
Here are a few examples of some of the impressive contest entries we received:
Suntide Commercial Realty, Inc. is a commercial real estate firm headquartered on University Avenue in Saint Paul. Suntide initiated a “Going Green” initiative in the large commercial properties they manage in the city. This included:
• Free electronics recycling for tenants
• Installation of low-flow faucets and low-flow toilets in all restrooms for reduced water use
• Paper towel dispensers that reduce the amount of paper waste through controlled dispensing
• Free cell phone recycling for all tenants & employees
• Send out eco-friendly, energy-saving tips to tenants, and convenient recycling options to encourage recycling vs. disposing
• Installation of LED lighting in elevators and parking lots for reduced energy usage
• Old, inefficient boilers were replaced with ones that run at 98% efficiency (vs. 75% efficiency of previous ones)
Through these steps Suntide's average electricity usage was reduced by 40 percent, and water usage was reduced by 7 percent. They also earned an Energy Star rating for three of their largest buildings, including the historic 320,000 square foot Court International office building in Saint Paul.

The Best Western Plus White Bear Country Inn is another SPACC member committed to improving the sustainability of their day-to-day operations. They formed a committee of employees to review “green initiatives” for the hotel on a quarterly basis and to brainstorm new ways to improve those programs. For example, they have:
• Installed programmable thermostats in all guest rooms and instituted a towel/linen reuse program
• Installed water conservation showerheads and toilets in all guest rooms
• Instituted a recycling program throughout entire hotel
• Replaced incandescent and fluorescent exit signs with LED lights
• Installed occupancy sensors in guest rooms which control heating and cooling units
• Installed sensors in public restrooms for lighting
• Provide reusable items for napkins and glassware and eliminated the use of Styrofoam products
• Substantially reduced the use of bottled water for meetings and banquets
• Included information on environmental programs in guest directories so guests can participate
In addition to cost savings on water and electricity, White Bear County Inn has also experienced a boost in customer loyalty among many guests that appreciate their efforts to reduce their environmental impact.
How You Can Get InvolvedBe sure to visit the visit the SPACC Rethink Recycling webpage for more great examples of SPACC members leading the way in environmental sustainability and green practices. Also follow @SPACC on Twitter and read our weekly Friday Facts newsletter for sustainability tips of the week and to see who wins the SPACC Rethink Recycling competition cash prizes!
If you have questions or know of an East Metro business with sustainability practices that should be highlighted, please contact James McClean at [email protected] or 651-265-2795.
