UfM Water Expert Group (WEG) Work Programme: WEFE Nexus

Aim: to enhance sustainable use of natural resources to achieve sustainable development goals under the Agenda 2030 in the UfM region

Objective: to introduce and/or promote the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Nexus approach, and to catalyse action for its mainstreaming, financing and implementation in UfM Member States, at the national and local (basin) levels as well as in the UfM region

Work Line 1 (small/medium scale): WEFE Nexus in Coastal, Urban and Rural Areas


Possible practical fields for Nexus investments- Green/Blue urban small/medium scale interventions (key role of local

authorities)- Renewables/solar for wastewater treatment and reuse (key role of tourism

sector, including SMEs) - Renewables/solar power for irrigation (key role of irrigators communities)- Irrigation systems optimizing water use (key role of irrigators communities)- Nature-based infrastructure, like related to wastewater management / floods

and extreme events management (key role of regional and local authorities)- Renewables/solar power for water abstraction

- Renewables/solar for desalination- Multipurpose dams (hydro, irrigation, flood mitigation)- Energy/flow co-optimization in cascades of dams in transboundary basins


Suggestion 2 (large scale): Facilitate a new generation of Nexus Wastewater Treatment Plants (water reuse, bio-energy production, fertilizers production, etc.), possibly with private investment mobilization

- Understand opportunities for private investment in advanced WWT and resources recovery in interested Mediterranean countries;

- Assist development of a pipeline for public and/or private investments for related infrastructure projects;

- Facilitate related pre-feasibility studies for selected infrastructure projects;- Built capacity of staff in public agencies and utilities (e.g. on Nexus technology,

financial and PPP aspects);- Engage stakeholders for effectively advancing the above outputs- Promote knowledge sharing, including interlinking related regional & national

projects
