Welcome to the Christmas edition of Airflow. As I pen this brief report, there is only 1 week to go before Christmas. It feels like it was only yesterday that Christmas was here last year, the year has gone that quick. I hope that Christmas brings lots of joy and happiness with families across the state. More importantly if you are planning on travelling please be careful on our roads.

I would like to thank the readers and more importantly the readers that have provided mate-rial for the newsletter over the past twelve months. I would also like to thank the person that certainly puts the newsletter on the map and that is Jim Henry from RSSF. Without his expertise we would not have a great cover every quarter. In closing on behalf of the committee and myself I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year .

Oily Hand Diesel Day out at Cowra MAC The twelfth Oily Hand Diesel day out at Cowra MAC has come and gone for another year. As usual the weather and the action at the field was perfect. What else would you expect from one of the events on the aeromodelling calendar that should not be missed? Alan Wooster and Brett Butler made the 2,000km trip down from Hervey Bay just so they didn’t miss out. They were joined by another seventy one happy aeromodellers to make the best attended OHDD to date. This year was a memorial to David Owen who did so much for traditional aeromodelling and model aircraft engines in Australia. The event featured not only many of the engines he supplied, built and repaired, but also two of the model aircraft he designed. These, the Fli-Bi and the Magnum, featured as models of the meet. Fli-Bi is a 22” free flight biplane and in all twenty nine turned up at Oily Hand. They were powered by a variety of diesels from the newly released Redfin Millish .5cc to an original 1948 Mills P75. Most of the Fli-Bi’s were in the original F/F format, but some had radio assist and others were scaled up somewhat.

Fli-Biers with their Fli-Bis

Magnum is a 36” control line model originally designed for triathlon events, but doubles as a competent sport aerobatic model. Twenty one builders turned up with their Magnums. Some of which were fitted with the Owen Engines T2.5 diesel. The Owen T2.5 is a reproduction of the 1958 Taipan 2.5 which David did a production run of in the few years prior to his passing. A fine engine for a fine flying model.

A gaggle of Magnums

The concours de elegance for both the Fli-Bi and the Magnum were won by Andrew Linwood with Dave Bailey and Reg Towell close on his heels. The neatness and precision of these builders is awe inspiring. None of the Magnums were entered in the Plank Racing event. Perhaps their builders wanted them to fly another day as Plank Racing can lead to model attrition. Any rate both Traditional Cowra Plank and Super Plank were won by Maris Dislers who had ventured up from SA to show how it is done. Maris also won the inaugural ‘Abomination Mass Launch’. His Cox 049 powered Oily Bird disappeared from view after 6min and 5sec. Not to worry, Maris had a tracker on board and once Roy Somersby showed him how to use the antenna he was able to find it a couple of paddocks away. What is this Abomination stuff anyway? Well, all aeromodellers become late at sometime, and such was the case with Big Kev Davies. The thing about Kev was that he was an incurable model engine collector, but also a blue blooded free flight scale modeller. Any model which was not scale was, in Kev’s eyes, an abomination. So we have been left with Kev’s legacy of one-eyedness and engines to deal with. So, why not an event where you have to make an ‘abomination’ fly for the longest time and win a nice diesel engine for your efforts. This year Maris won a limited edition PAW Millenium Special. Next year he is competing, along with a host of keen rivals, for a Benno Schlosser 0.25cc, the jewel in the crown of small diesel engines. If you wanted you could come next year on the weekend of 25th/26th August and have a crack at winning that Schlosser too! A good turn up from the SAMS fraternity competed for the radio assist Cabin Scramble late Saturday arvo to be beaten by Condo Smith who achieved a credible 23min 58sec in the allotted half hour. Cabin Scramble requires a model designed before 1960 such as Vic Smeed’s ubiquitous ‘Tomboy’ and powered by a diesel (or reproduction) from the era of less that 1cc.

Some of the line-up for SAMS Cabin scramble

After four years of trying, at long last Craig Thorton from Parkes won the David Owen Memorial Free Flight Scramble with his ‘Sniffer’ and took home that beautiful David Owen Memorial Oily Hand Day trophy and an Oily Hand Day tee shirt. Craig doesn’t drink so the nice bottle of red lived to see another day.

Geoff Potter with his big Easy Bee. Diesel power of course.

If after all that you are still in the dark about what Oily Hand is about you had better go to cowramac.asn.au where you will find the full report, more photos and links to video to find out. You will also find the information about the models of the meet for 2018. See you next year at Cowra MAC’s “Milroy” field with your bottle diesel in your oily hand. Andy Luckett Cowra MAC OHDD co-ordinator.

The Mills first appeared in the UK market in 1946 with the first mark 1 being the 1.3 cc version. The Mills was at first made by the Mills Brothers Limited in Surrey in England. The Mark 2 ap-peared in Aeromodeller in June 1948. Most common today the Mills have a black chromate finish applied to the magnesium crank case as a corrosion retardant. Polished case versions existed how ever briefly. Most common is the .75 pictured on the left and the 1.3 cc pictured on the right . The one on the left is an Indian .75 Mills and the 1.3 is a genuine Mills made in England. Finally the 2.4 cc, 2.4 Twin (that was used in Boats and cars) and a one off 5cc Mills were pro-duced.In time the manufacturing of the mills was bought by an Indian company Aurora Model Manufac-turing Company in Calcutta and manufacturing started in 1966. The MP Jet marked AM (Allen Mercury ) and FROG engines were also manufactured in India by this company. Over 35,000 of the Mills in various models were sold from the factory in India.

Numerous types of Mills have existed over the years , some sought after. These include Bodding-ton Mills,Doonside Mills (Ivor F Australia) and the Irvine Mills (UK) .

EXPERIENCE THE THRILL OF FLIGHT AT THE 70TH NATIONAL MODEL AIRCRAFT CHAMPIONSHIPS! In April 2018, in what is sure to be one of the most exciting events on the MAAA calendar, the New South Wales Free Flight Society, in conjunction with West Wyalong Model Aero Club, are hosting the 70th National Model Aircraft Championships.Featuring 84 events across five sites, it will showcase the very best in every facet of aeromodelling, including Radio Control, Control Line, Free Flight and Indoor flying.WHY YOU SHOULD ATTENDThe 70th National Model Aircraft Championships will have something for everyone, whether you’re a novice flyer or an experienced pilot. It’s quite simply a terrific occasion to observe aerobatics, graceful gliders, replica scale models and thrilling control line combat. The Nationals present a rare, eye-opening opportunity for all MAAA members to witness events from different disciplines and gain an insight into other modelling events. And that’s not all…“We’re going back old school by having an opening ceremony where the town mayor will declare the Nation-als are open and there’s going to be a night scramble too which is always a lot of fun,” says 70th Nationals Coordinator, Tahn Stowe. “The Nationals isn’t all about competition between the elite. It’s about people coming together to spectate other events and see how other people do things to enable an exchange of ideas and an exchange of technol-ogy.”WHERE AND WHEN The Nationals are an 8-day event that takes place across five conveniently close sites all within 15 minutes of West Wyalong during the week of 23 to 30 April 2018.As the event takes place during the school holidays, modellers are encouraged to come along with their fami-lies to enjoy one or perhaps several spectacular days out.VIEW THE PROGRAMYou can browse through the entire 8-day program on the following pages along with the flyer . At the recent MAAA Council Conference held in Tasmania, the proposal submitted by NSWFFS, to hold the 70 Nationalsin West Wyalong, was unanimously approved.

The dates are 23 - 30 April 2018.

The opportunity exists for a successful, memorable andenjoyable 70 MAAA Nationals in West Wyalong in 2018. Webelieve West Wyalong is a fitting site for the celebration of 80years of MAAA Nationals, and possibly the only site inAustralia capable of hosting a fully combined MAAA NationalModel Aircraft Championships.

The campus of venues provides a sound basis for a“reunion” of all those members who have been to previousNat’s and all those who have always wanted to attend atraditional Nat’s. In addition the opportunity exists todemonstrate some increasingly popular, cutting edge eventssuch as FPV Drone racing, and introduce a new generation tothe Nat’s.

The town is well situated, centrally, on the Newell Highwayand while it boasts an array of services and facilities, it is smallenough for an event of this nature to have a significantimpact, with various media coverage almost guaranteed.

This will be the first time in many decades that all eventsare within a 15 minute radius of a town centre and that twoor three disciplines will be able to fly on the same flying field.

A 70 Nationals Committee has been formed and thepositions already identified are:

a) Chair and MAAA Liaison Officer - Tahn Stoweb) Secretary - Gary Goodwin (VP NSWFFS)c) Treasurer - Gary Pope (Treasurer NSWFFS)d) Registrar - Gary Pope (Treasurer NSWFFS)

Administrators for each discipline:

e) CL- Bruce Hoffman (Pres CLAS)f) FF- Terry Bond · (Pres NSWFFS)g) SAM’s-Peter Scotth) RC- Greg Lepp (Pres VMAA)i) Safety Manager - Michael Towelj) Public Relations Officer - Jeff Stien ( CDO, BSC)k) CASA and WW Airport liaison - Wayne Broad (BSC)l) West Wyalong MAC liaison - Joseph Danczakm) Merchandise & promotional event design - Colin Crowley

With 5 separate venues catering for 10 separate flight linesthe committee will be programming events to allow maximuminter-discipline entries and opportunities to spectate.

The Program and Entry Form will be published nationally inearly September 2017.

Please contact your Special Interest Group to make sureyour favourite event is being held.

KAMS 3rd ANNUAL OPEN FLYING DAY Excellent weather and flying conditions greeted visiting Aeromodellers from the Samford Valley, Ipswich, Maryborough and Dalby Clubs along with members of the South Burnett community. This is the third annual open Flying Day event that the Kingaroy Aeromodellers have conducted in aid of the RFDS.

Several community members took the opportunity to introduce the next generation to the fast-growing family sport. For the purchase of a $5 commemorative RFDS badge they had the opportunity to experience the adrenalin rush and thrill of model flight in a safe con-trolled environment by flying a model on a buddy box system. SBRC Councillor Danita Potter had a go at flying and was on hand to open the event with a ribbon cutting ceremony followed by morning tea.

F5J at the MAAA Nats West Wyalong Courtesy of the AEFA .

The AEFA has put its hand up to run an F5J event at the MAAA Nats being offered at West Wyalong a couple of weeks after Easter next year. Several AEFA fliers are keen on supporting the traditional Nats, so will be attending and helping by running this event.F5J is being held at the West Wyalong Airport. A practice day has been nominated as Wednesday 25 April, and F5J will then be flown over the next two days on Thursday 26 and Friday 27 April. Terry Scolari is going to act as Contest Director and I am sure he will receive help from Mal Pring and Mel Gillott.Maybe you might like to schedule coming to the National Electric Flight Rally in Can-berra at the NAAS field over Easter (30 March - 1 April), and then move on to the Nats in West Wyalong.

A selection of aerobatic models that were flown at the Queensland State Champs . Electric models were pre-dominately flown with the old glow engine thrown in to the mix.

Some were of the hitech variety with contra rotating props , others had a variety of very light high pitched car-bon props .

Details in relation to the CASA Directive (dated 19/10/17)

CASA released a directive in relation to all RPA’s within the Australian airspace in October. While the directive itself wasn’t a surprise to the MAAA Executive and State Presidents, some of the content that the MAAA presented to be incorporated was absent. The reasoning behind this is now known and CASA RPAS team had already actioned steps to ensure that all MAAA members were unaffected by the latest Instrument (CASA 96/17).

The Main aspects of the Instrument CASA 96/17 are:No RPA operations within 3nm of the movement area of a controlled aerodrome (unless an authorisation or exemption has been granted); No person is to launch an RPA within 3nm of the movement area of a non-controlled aero-drome (an HLS) if the person is aware that a manned aircraft is operating to or from the aerodrome. If a person controlling an unmanned aircraft within 3nm of the movement area of the non-controlled aerodrome becomes aware that an aircraft is operating to or from that aerodrome (or HLS)Immediately ensure that the unmanned aircraft is safety manoeuvred away from the path of the manned aircraft, and;Land the unmanned aircraft as safely as possible. All persons controlling an unmanned aircraft must not operate the aircraft higher than 400 feet AGL. This does not apply where an authorisation or exemption has been granted for the site or an area approval is in place. (ie. Some MAAA clubs have current area approval/height increase instruments in place which remain active)

The resultant negotiation between MAAA and CASA relating to the directive and the ex-emption issued to MAAA is that we have clubs and sites that currently have height increase instruments and/or area approvals issued by CASA and that club operations is business as usual.

If there are any Queensland clubs that are within the 3nm to non-controlled aerodrome or HLS and do not have an area approval, MAAA and the MAAQ executive can work with the clubs to prepare and obtain approvals for an area approval for the club under the exemptions issued to MAAA by CASA.

I don’t believe that MAAQ has any clubs within 3nm of controlled aerodromes however if we do, please contact myself so that we can ensure that we have appropriate area approvals in place to further highlight the safe model aircraft operations by all MAAQ clubs.

Safety is no accident.
