The Greek government decided on Sunday night it had no option but to close the nation’s banks the following day after the European Central Bank (ECB) raised the stakes by freezing the liquidity lifeline that has kept them afloat during a six-month run on deposits. In London the FTSE 100 tumbled by 150 points - more than 2% - when trading began at 8am BST. There were even sharper falls across Europe, with the French and German markets both tumbling by 4%. European banking shares were the hardest hit, suffering losses of up to 10%. Overnight in Tokyo the Nikkei index had fallen almost 3% and in Hong Kong shares slid 2.5%. “The Greek butterfly looks set to cause a tornado in financial markets,” said Michael Hewson, chief markets analyst at CMC Markets UK. “In the process we could well also find out if this event turns out to be the equivalent of the butterfly flapping its wings in New Mexico, going on to cause a hurricane in China.” The Athens Stock Exchange will not reopen on Monday.. The dramatic move, after 48 hours of sensational developments in Greece’s long-running battles with creditors, was sparked by the call on Friday night by country’s prime minister, Alexis Tsipras , for a referendum on its creditors’ demands. That prompted finance ministers of the eurozone to effectively put an end to his country’s five-year bailout by the International Monetary Fund, the ECB and the European commission. In a brief, televised address to the nation, Tsipras threw the blame on to the leaders of the eurozone. But he did not say how long the banks would remain shut, nor did he give details of how much individuals and companies would be allowed to withdraw once they reopened. Share prices slump after Athens orders banks shut until after Sunday 28th June snap referendum, with stock exchange closed on Monday and ATM withdrawals limited to €60.

our front page is a serious International News story we

thought we should share, inside this month we have lots of

interesting local news stories, articles and features.

Summer is well under way and let’s hope the weather

matches our needs so that we can have long, lazy nights in

the sun with a cool drink in one hand (and a burger in the

other for me anyway).

As always, this paper wouldn’t be made possible without

the support of our advertisers and the regular contributors

of stories. If you have anything you would like to see give

A massive thanks to all advertisers for your support, please

thanks them for us by giving them a call.

Here’s wishing you a lovely July. Enjoy the read and I’ll be

Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) is looking for people from across the province to zip across the Lagan in Belfast on Sunday 20th September. Are you brave enough to step up to this adrenaline-filled challenge? Participants will set foot on a crane which will then be raised to an incredible150ft in the air! You will witness the most amazing views over the city before stepping off and whizzing 1000ft across the river, reaching super speeds of up to 40mph! With the wind in your hair and the water below, you will feel invincible! MRF Fundraising Officer, Karen Dunlop comment-ed, ‘Having taken part in this challenge before, I would encourage people to give it a go! The hardest part is taking that initial step off the crane but then you feel a great rush of adrenaline as you fly across the water. It’s a fun and memorable way to raise vital funds in the fight against meningitis and septicae-

mia. They are deadly diseases which are easily mis-taken for milder illnesses like flu but can kill within hours or cause serious, life-long disabilities such as brain damage, amputations and blindness. With your support, MRF can continue to fund vital research pro-jects, raise awareness of the diseases in the province and support those who have been affected.’ You must be at least 16 years old to particpate, pay a £39 registration fee and raise a minimum of £50 in sponsorship. For this unforgettable experience please secure you place today by contacting Karen on 028 9032 1283 or email [email protected]. Once regis-tered, you will receive a fundraising pack and charity t-shirt to help get your fundraising off to a flying start. We would like to get as many people as we possibly can to zip the River Lagan so please sign up now – you could help save a life.

WILL YOU ZIP IT FORMENINGITIS RESEARCH?

Over the coming months there are a range of programmes and activi- ties organised to ensure that children and adults will not be bored! The local community and voluntary groups have compiled a list of activities that will run from July-August 2015 with a bit for everyone to partici- pate in (See back page for full list). The main day is Saturday 15 August 2015 which will see Rathcoole transformed into Rio De Rathcoole Carnival. There will be stilt walkers, circus skills, world music and dance, a petting farm, pony rides inflata- bles, craft stalls, games and much more.We plan to have a soap box derby (Gyder

racing) and the Newtownab- bey Men ‘s Shed group have agreed to help groups design creative Gy- ders in the weeks coming up to the Carnival. There will be a procession from the Dunanney Centre at 1pm on the day. The plan is to have peo- ple as colorful as possible. Everyone is encouraged to come fancy dress with the theme being carnival wear.We hope that this event will bring people from all over the Estate to- gether young and old. This is definitely an event not to be missed.

There are a number of areas to get right in any business. Successful entrepreneursfigureoutthekeyprocessesandgetthemrighttoensurean advantage. There may be exceptions but for the vast majority of cases, ignoring these building blocks will slow down your success.

1.YourMarket-Givethemwhattheywant!‘We are brilliant, why is no one buying from us?’ Is an all too common complaint. It’s where many small businesses go wrong. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you have a brilliant idea and that peoplewillabsolutelybuyitbecauseit’ssobrilliant.Youthinkpeopleneed your product or service, and that gets in the way of understanding you potential market. People don’t always buy what they need - they buy what they want. Sometimes as the expert you will be right about what they need. But if the customer incorrectly thinks they need something else, you’re still going to fail. So give them what they want.Gary Halbert, the famous copywriter, would ask his students: "If you and I both owned a hamburger stand and we were in a contest to see who could sell the most hamburgers, what advantages would you most like to have on your side to help you win?"Common answers included superior meat, best location, lower prices. Halbertwouldreply:"OK,I'llgiveyoueverysingleadvantageyouhaveasked for. I, myself, only want one advantage and, if you will give it to me,Iwill(whenitcomestosellingburgers)whipthepantsoffallofyou!""What advantage do you want?" they would ask. "The only advantage I want, is... A Starving Crowd!" he would reply. If your customers are starving and you own a hamburger stand, you are giving them what they want. Look for a starving crowd, it will make things so much easier. If your customers aren’t hungry enough for what you are currently offering, it may be time for a pivot or change of focus or direction. When people really want what you are offering everything else is so much easier.2.YourGoal–MissionStatementA business starting out can waste a lot of time on certain tasks, which are very unproductive at this stage. And while a business plan may be useful it’s a real time-zapper, a mission statement on the other hand is vital.Taketimeouttowritedownwhatyouaretryingtoachieve.Youcould

Find people who can add to your venture while enjoying what they do. Remember, you can’t do epic stuff with basic people.5. Analysing GrowthManynewbusinessesandstartupsgetexcitedthattheyareaddingnewcustomers at an impressive rate. But this is not the time to rest on your laurels. high standard of the physical improvements undertaken in the town. These will be a key driver in improving the economic life of the town by helping sustain and develop local businesses. The creation of a more attractive and pedestrian-friendly environment should support more visitor numbers and encourage people to stay longer.’

Antrim has come out tops again, this time at Ireland’s Best Kept Towns Awards!Out of 700 hundred entries from across the entire island of Ireland, Antrim was crowned the number one Best Kept Large Urban Centre. The awards for the Borough didn’t stop there, as Randalstown came fourth in the Best Kept Small town awards.Alderman John Smyth, Chair of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council’s Operations Committee was delighted with the result. He comments, “Following our success at the Northern Ireland Amenity Council awards last year, when Antrim was awarded Best Large Town and Randalstown Best Small Town, we were then put forward to the all-Ireland awards. This is a great day for Antrim, Randalstown and indeed the Borough. To have been chosen from over 700 entries is a

great achievement.”Alderman Smyth continues, “I would like to reassure our residents that we will continue to work towards overcoming the obstacles imposed upon us through new traffic regulations and budget cuts faced by Transport NI which is affecting the regular grass cutting throughout Northern Ireland. We want to ensure the Borough continues to look its best and be a source of civic pride for our residents.”

Recycling Week is here and Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is encouraging people to expand their recycling routine to include ALL the rooms in their house. Councillor Thomas Hogg, Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey comments, “We want to thank everyone for their recycling efforts and ask them, if they don’t already, to look a little further than the kitchen and recycle items from other rooms in the home. Remember that every single item you recycle saves resources and helps the environment.” Most bathrooms contain lots of recyclables. Items which can be put into your blue bin include cardboard toilet roll tubes, plastic shampoo, moisturiser, liquid soap, bleach and bathroom cleaner bottles, deodorant cans and toothpaste boxes - just remember to remove any trigger top sprays or pump dispenser

tops. If everyone in the UK recycled just one toothpaste box, it would save enough energy to run a fridge in over 2,000 homes for a year. From the living room newspapers, magazines, envelopes and even air freshener aerosol cans can all be recycled. Although the kitchen is usually the place from where we recycle the most, sometimes items can be overlooked such as dishwasher tablet boxes, cardboard juice cartons, cardboard packaging, tin foil and washing-up liquid bottles. Finally, let’s not forget to keep recycling food waste through your brown bin. If you haven’t already, then visit www.antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk/foodwastecaddy complete the short survey and order your new deluxe kitchen caddy, which is available in a range of colours for a limited time only, while stocks last.

1 IN 3” CANCER SUPPORT GROUP

After many months of group meetings, the Rathcoole Youth Forum have successfully completed a Good Re- lations OCN, organised numerous community fundraising events and completed a visit to Krakow, Poland (Thank you all for your support!)During our time there we had the opportunity to ex- plore the beautiful city, get underground and visit the Wieliczka Salt Mines and well as somereflectiontimeduringaveryemotional experience at the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. To say the group embraced this experience would be an understatement, one young person couldn’t understand why anyone would leave this beautiful city to come to Northern Ireland unless it was their only option, this trip left plenty to be grateful for and appreciate what a privilege it is to be apart of something. With the support from CRAIC NI, Polish Group the young people came

cack from Poland and presented their experiences to their peers at a session in the Dunanney Centre. It was the hope the Youth Forum could share their learning and help to motivate their peers to also get active in their local communities. It is hoped that young people can be a part of positive change and the Youth Forum recognise it this also comes with responsibilities. Going forward the group want to look forward at 3 main themes: local volunteer opportunities, further engagement and support for their peers and also to establish links with youth from multi-cultural backgrounds. This next stage of the group’s journey begins with them undertaking an OCN level 2 in Peer Leadership and running a number of initiatives over the summer months ahead... watch this space!!! TOP GEAR - THE END OF AN ERAE arlier this month, the BBC hired radio DJ Chris Evans to host season 23 of “Top Gear.” But first, a final episode of the show featuring the hosting trio of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Ham-mond, and James May will hit the air.Sunday’s final episode is comprised of previously unseen footage shot before Clarkson was dismissed from the BBC in March.According to media critics, the final episode featuring the three is expect-ed to draw 8.4 million viewers — the highest-rated in show history. In his latest column for the Sun, Clarkson wrote that the episode features two films shot for season 22 of the show, the Daily Mail reported. So what’s next for the hosting trio? Last week, Jeremy Clarkson confirmed to the Sunday Times that he — along with his cohosts — will return to TV with a new car show. Though the publication reported that

an announcement is expected in a matter of weeks, the exact network on which the show will air has yet to be confirmed. Sources around the web said, however, that the ex-”Top Gear” trio — along with former showrunner Andy Wilman — were “very close” to a deal with Netflix. In recent weeks, the foursome has held meetings with numerous potential suitors including the British broadcaster ITV. But Netflix seems to have come out on top. Netflix, the

American online media-streaming service, is home to such award-winning original programming as “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black.” According to the Sunday Times, the new Clarkson-fronted car show will probably debut sometime after next March. The 22nd season of “Top Gear” ended abruptly in March after only seven of the nine planned episodes had aired because of the suspension and subsequent dismissal of Clarkson. Hammond and May followed Clarkson out the door by voluntarily declining to renew their respective BBC contracts, which expired in April. Wilman — long-time executive producer and close friend of Clarkson — also left the BBC after the host’s dismissal. The network’s decision to part ways with the polarizing TV personality came after an internal BBC inquiry found Clarkson had punched a “Top Gear” producer when he failed to obtain a

hot steak dinner after a long day of filming. The fracas with the producer came after a controversy-filled 2014 for Clarkson, who was mired in scandal stemming from accusations of racist, sexist, and culturally insensitive comments.Prior to his dismissal, Clarkson had spent nearly three decades with the BBC as a host on “Top Gear” and is credited with being the driving force behind the show’s explosive interna-tional success. With more than 350 million weekly viewers, “Top Gear” set the Guinness World Record as the most watched factual TV program in the world. In ad-dition to the UK show, the “Top Gear” brand includes numerous international spinoffs, a live stadium tour, merchan-dising, a successful magazine, and a website.

Porsche wins 24 Hours of Le Mans, ending Audi’s five-year winning streakPorsche has just unseated Audi atop the endurance racing throne. Well, for a year at least. The #19 Porsche 919 Hybrid won the 24 Hours of Le Mans today, ending Audi’s streak of five consecutive wins at the legendary en-durance race in France. Audi has com-pletely dominated the race for years, with an Audi vehicle winning thirteen of the last fifteen races. But Porsche, now with a record 17 wins at Le Mans,

returned to the sport just last year, and it came home with the checkered flag this time, the 83rd running of the race. Porsche last won in 1998.

The #19 Porsche crossed the line with German Formula One driver Nico Hulkenberg at the wheel. British driver Nick Tandy and New Zealand’s Earl Bamber joined him for the race win. The #17 Porsche, headlined by former Formula One driver Mark Webber, and the #7 Audi R18 e-tron quattro came in

second and third, respectively.

MARKS PORSCHE’S RECORD 17TH WIN AT LE MANS

The Porsches and Audis gave each oth-er stiff competition over the course of the race. The Porsches showed incred-ible qualifying pace — a third Porsche entrant took pole position with the fastest-ever lap on the circuit’s current layout. All three Porsches started up front, followed by the Audis. The ques-

tion was whether the Porsches could show the endurance in addition to the outright speed to beat the Audis. The lead switched back and forth between the manufacturers over the course of the race, but it was the Audis that were uncharacteristically held back by reliability issues, ultimately leading to a number of unscheduled pit stops.

The third-place #7 Audi finished two laps behind the winner, and a lap behind the second-place #17 Porsche.

Nowadays cars are expensive. There’s simply no

getting around that fact. UK car sales however

have been rising steadily for a number of years

now and as of last year the motor industry is

selling more than it was in the pre-recession era.

You’ll be surprised...

The C1 from Citroen is the French manufac-

turers most recent take on the city car, which

has become increasingly popular over the last

5 years. The C1 is available from £99p/m with a

low deposit. No-frills motoring doesn’t get more

affordable and more French than this nippy

little motor, which looks as if it was designed

specificallytolookgreatnippingaroundtheback streets of Paris. While the interior looks

aesthetically pleasing, the material choices are

cheap and not particularly nice to touch. Don’t

let that put you off though, sadly you’ll struggle

tofindmuchLeatherandAlcantaraforunder£100p/m.

Lookingforafirstcarforayoungdriver? You’lldowelltofindsomethingmoreaffordablethanthe Suzuki Alto. This car is perfect for bargain

motoring. The 1.0 litre engine punches out a

solid 67hp from three cylinders. Road tax for the

year is just £30 and you’ll be achieving a healthy

65.7mpg when driven properly. The car is simple

and basic inside as you’d expect and the Alto

scored disappointingly low on safety tests. The

light controls and super-tight turning circle

make the Alto a great car for city centre driving.

The Sandero is a reasonably sized hatchback

from Renault’s budget brand, Dacia. For just

£89p/m you can afford the 1.2 litre petrol

‘Access’ trim level. Bigger engines and more

comprehensivespecificationsareavailable, butyou’ll end up spending more than a like for like

equivalent once you start speccing out your San-

dero. It’s best to keep it simple as that’s where

the savings are. The Access trim even comes with

manual door locks, now there’s a blast from the

past...

Deals on the new 108 from Peugeot start at

just £85pm - not bad at all, especially consid-

ering Peugeot will offer a years free insurance

to eligible customers (only on certain deals

which are over the £100p/m mark, but its a nice

gesture nonetheless.) The Peugeot is strikingly

similar to the C1 from Citroen, only a slightly

reworked interior and different badging. Really

though, its the deals available that make this

Peugeot stand out. Prospective buyers looking

for all-in-one motoring should consider the new

108 for a cheap monthly payment, insurance

included, warranty provided and servicing plans

available. Nice and easy.

It’s not unheard of to spend more than £83

on your weekly shopping trip, and your groceries

do not come with a class-leading 7 year warran-

ty. Enter the Kia Picanto. The styling on the new

shape is considerably more ‘cute’ than previous

models and the steering has been improved

massively also, which makes it great for nipping

round the trendier districts of town. Sadly the

residual values are weaker than rival models,

but that 7 year Kia warranty outshines all rivals.

Swings and roundabouts.

EVERY GARDENER NEEDS A SHEDThere are lots of things that a gardener needs, but the two most important are patience and a shed. Patience will make you a better gardener, but a shed will allow you to make a better garden. The structure does not have to be new or even attractive - it is simply a weatherproof hut in which to store things. Equally, it is a place to meditate and rest from your labours. It can double as a potting shed for seed sowing and propagating by cuttings. Now that the weather is growing chilly, a warm shed is a welcome refuge from winter, so give the place a once-over, identify what you really need and, if you are very brave, decide what you should clear out. What every shed needsMy list may differ from yours but there are some must-haves. Top of the list has to be electricity installed by a electrician. A power point will allow leaf blowers, lawn mowers, hedge trimmers and other power equipment to be operated within cable distance of the shed. Moreover, light and a heater will make life more enjoyable during cold, dark evenings. But by far the best argument for installing power is the electric kettle. The joy of having a cuppa without having to take off your boots and wash your hands should not be underestimated.Have a sturdy, waist-high bench or table beside the window. A 15 cm (6in) deep plastic tray with an open front will keep compost where you want it when potting. A great big 15cm (6in) nail driven into one of the timber corner posts will support wet coats heavy with secateurs, knife, string and other essentials. It is amazing how many layers of winter clothes gardeners need. None may be fit for a jumble sale but they are familiar and cosy. Now, call me fussy but there has to be a way of storing boots so they are ready when you need them. I favour the wall rack with deep, narrow V-shapes, each of which supports an upside-down boot.

Alternatively, 60cm (2ft) vertical timber dowel rods spaced 15cm (6in) apart and attached to a board will do the same job.An essential piece of furniture is a vermin-proof cupboard or box in which to store seeds. It needs to remain cool but not freezing. If it is strong it may double as a seat.Tools are the curse of the garden shed. They form a heap, fall over and take up every corner. Invest in a tool rack. There are those gardeners who have every conceivable tool in every style. This causes confusion and you end up spending more time sorting than using. I only use a spade, fork, shovel, two rakes, secateurs, folding hand saw, loppers, a sharpening stone and trowel. I don't have a hoe. In our damp Irish climate, unless you lift and dump the hoed weeds they re-root into the loose soil.A neat trick is to label each position on the tool rack with the tool that should be in place. That way, if there's a gap, you will know what is missing and can look for it. Otherwise it will eventually turn up rusted and useless.Make space for sturdy shelves where you can store bulbs. Keep them below eye level to make it easy to check routinely for rotting or diseased bulbs. If the shelves face the window, tubers such as dahlias and begonias may be started into growth in situ.Leave space on a shelf for essential kit such as labels, string, rooting hormone and soil-testing kit, but keep the area small to prevent clutter.Clear outNow we come to the hard part. If you have had your shed for any length of time it is probably a shambles in need of a serious de-clutter. Start with the obvious. It is time you realised that short bits of string, elastic bands, faded, empty seed packets, bent nails, corks and dried up permanent markers never did have and never will have a use. Broken tools have to go. How many broken, wooden

spade shafts can you keep for pointed dibbers when you have used the same perfectly good one for years?By all means keep some broken clay pots as crocks to aid drainage in other pots. But you have probably hoarded enough to re-pot every plant in the county. They can be stored outside.Old granular fertiliser should be scattered along the hedge line, or over the compost heap to help it break down. Pesticides that are past their sell-by date should be taken to your local authority for safe, supervised disposal.Old half-empty bags of potting and seed compost may be scattered over the heather bed. Keep the plastic bags for growing early potatoes on the patio.Where neatly tied bundles of branches, used as pea supports, are ancient and brittle, leave them out under a hedge or tree for wildlife to move into.A shed makeoverA shed is a home from home, so by all means personalise it. If the roof is sound then give consideration to a living roof of sedums. They are supplied in carpet form and have proved to be a success at our Gardeners' Question Time shed at Sparsholt College, Hampshire, as seen in our cover photo. If it turns you on, by all means have gingham curtains and fancy tie-backs. Personally I have a bolt on the inside of the door, a mug, some gardening magazines, the radio and a cushion (but then I'm a patient gardener).Stuff to get rid ofLong ago I found that gimmicks put years on you. I hate bulb-planters. I have never found one that works well on firm, stony ground. Sheep-shear blades always manage to overlap with a gap. And those macho loaded holsters and tool pouches never have the one piece of equipment I need.

Taking a longer-term, more holistic view of the impacts of Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) in the decision making process, rather than an excessive focus on costs is essential, says a group of researchers and conservation charities, as government considers whether or not to designate new sites later this year. The group is concerned that opportunities to protect sites in English seas may slip away due to Govern-ment Impact Assessments (IAs) that do not give a proper account of all the benefits these protected sites would deliver. The New Economics Foundation, Marine Conservation Society, RSPB, The Wildlife Trusts and WWF have presented the benefits of protecting sites in a more visual way, to show that these outweigh the costs of designating and managing them. This type of infographic approach is a useful way to engage with stakeholders and decision-makers alike. The organisations are urging govern-ment not to allow costs to get in the way of the wider benefits that could result from designating and protecting underwater

sites. “The financial cost argument is a power-ful one, used to argue against protecting some of our vital marine assets, but we can show that if you take into account even just a proportion of the wider benefits to society and the economy, then the odds are in fact stacked in favour of protection” says Chris Williams, of the New Economics Foundation. “For some sites, financial costs have been used as the rea-son to reject Marine Conservation Zones without valuing the wider socio-economic benefits in a balanced way, which should be the main driver of the decisions. The decision making tools – particularly the summary pages of Impact Assessments - are inherently biased against long term sustainability and wider societal benefits as they are focussed on costs to business.” The group says that such a short term, narrowly framed appraisal could lead to decisions that jeopardise the long term health and productivity of our seas. It would also fail to safeguard the health and well-being benefits that people gain

through time spent in healthy and produc-tive marine and coastal places, and from knowing that our seas are protected for future generations. Government traditionally relies on Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) as a tool to support environmental decision-making, but looking beyond this rather limiting approach may lead to better outcomes for people and the ocean. “The purpose of our ‘Infographic Impact Assessment’ is to present trade-offs in a way showing a more holistic range of criteria to consider when decision-makers are thinking about safeguarding our seas, instead of the narrow focus on costs.’’ Recently published research* indi-cates that divers and anglers attach an annual value of over 14 million pounds to protection of these MCZs and that they would also support significant benefits to people which cannot be measured in monetary terms and which are currently being overlooked. So far, twenty-seven new MCZs have been designated from an original list of

127 recommended by regional stake-holder groups in 2012. Defra is currently reviewing consultation responses on 23 more sites. While consideration of some prospective sites becomes very focussed on the monetized costs in Impact As-sessment summary sheets, the visual IA includes monetized benefit estimates. A consultation on a third tranche of sites is expected in 2016 and it is hoped that the approach can help decision-makers value these marine sites holistically when deciding on their designation. In addition to an overall summary of all 23 sites currently being consult-ed on, illustrative ’infographic impact assessments’ have been developed for four individual sites that present a more holistic range of information to support decision-making. The four sites presented are: Offshore Overfalls; Western Chan-nel; Coquet to St Marys and Holderness Inshore. In every case, including offshore sites that are not easily visited by people, the estimated benefits of protection are shown to outweigh costs.

The Housing Selection Scheme is the list of rules that the Housing Executive and housing associations use when deciding who they should offer housing to. Social housing is housing owned by either the Northern Ireland Housing Executive or housing associations. Once youfillinaHousing/TransferApplication form you’re regis-tered on the system and you’ll be considered for offers by all social housing providers.

Making your applicationYou can only be on one application for hous-ing so you wouldn't be able to apply in your own name if, for example, you are already on your parents' application. Make sure anything you write on the form is correct. You’ll have to sign the form to say that the information you’ve given is true. If you’re offered a home because of information that wasn’t true you could be evicted. Choose 2 areas that you want to live in. Think about the number of social prop-erties in the area, whether there are any new builds planned and how often empty properties become available. You’ll be considered for properties owned by any social landlord in these areas. If youdon’twanttobehousedbyaspecificlandlord you’ll need to state this in your application. Give your form to the Housing Execu-tive unless you already live in a housing association property. If you are a housing association tenant and you’re applying for a transfer give the form to your housing association.

After the applicationYour application form should be acknowl-edged within 3 working days of handing it in.TheHousingOfficerwilllookattheinfor-mation you’ve given and decide how many pointsyoushouldget.TheHousingOfficermay want to come to your current home to get a better idea of your housing situation. If your current housing situation is so un-reasonable that it looks as though you could be homeless or you're likely to become homeless the Housing Executive will have to interview you in person to see if you pass the 4 tests for homelessness. If you've ap-pliedforatransferandyourhousingofficerthinks your housing situation is unreason-able enough to meet the homelessness tests they should refer you to the Housing

Executive for a homelessness assessment. Once you’ve been assessed and awarded your points you’ll go on the waiting list. The points system is supposed to make sure that the people who are in the worst circum-stancesgetofferedapropertyfirst.Thismeans that the more points you have, the better your chances of getting an offer. You need to renew your application every year.

Allocating housingWhen a Housing Executive or housing association property becomes available for letting the landlord will look at the waiting list to decide who to offer the property to first.Thepropertywillnormallybeofferedto the person who has the most points andrequires this type of property andhas the area listed as an area of choice. Landlords will normally offer 1 in every 3 vacancies to someone who is on the waiting list because they have applied for a transfer from their current housing association or Housing Executive home. In exceptional circumstances, a landlord might offer a property to someone, even though someone else on the waiting list might have more points than them. This should only happen if the landlord is convinced that the decision make sense and is a good housing management decision. The landlord should be able to justify this decision. This could happen if a ground floor,adaptedpropertywasavailable-itwould make sense to allocate this property to someone with a disability even though someone else may have more points than them. There are rare circumstances where a landlord can decide to offer the points to someone even though they aren't the high-est person on the list. This is allowed by Rule 48 of the housing selection scheme. This can onlyhappenifthedecisioncanbejustifiedand there are no other people higher up on thewaitinglistwhohaveaspecificneedforthis type or property.

HOW TO GROW YOUR HAIR FASTWhiter teeth, like thick, shiny, hair, is something that many people in our cosmetically driven world desire today. In fact, Americans spend over $1.4 billion dollars in over-the-counter teeth whitening products every year-that’s a good chunk of money just to achieve a different shade of teeth. Everyone has tried OTC teeth whitener- even paid to have the dentist do it once. It worked for a bit, but teeth get so sensitive. We feel we really didn’t need to be so obsessed with the color of our teeth that we paid a bunch of money for a bunch of who-knows-what that made our teeth hurt, so we started looking into more natural alternatives. With a bit of patience, we think you can naturally restore whiteness to your teeth. They may not get to be scary sear-out-somebodies-corneas –when-you –smile white, but they’ll appear more like you took good care of your pretty pearly whites rather than just bleaching them like crazy.

Baking Soda and Lemon Juice PasteBaking Soda isn’t a shocker here. Sodium bicarbonate (its official name) is mildly abrasive; gently scrubbing away surface stains to return teeth to a whiter shade. It’s also very alkaline (the opposite of acidic) so I would think if you have a very acidic mouth or eat a lot of acidic food, it could help balance out the Ph, which would be useful as acid breaks down enamel-this is strictly speculation on my part. It will also reduce the acidity of the lemon juice, which acts as a natural bleach of sorts. We use a mixture of baking soda and water on some days, and use the lemon juice on others, as you don’t want to overdo it.You will need…

- Several teaspoons of baking soda - Enough lemon juice or water to form a paste - A toothbrushDirectionsMix several teaspoons of baking soda with enough fresh lemon juice (or water) to make a paste. Wipe your teeth and any extra saliva off of them with a paper towel. Put a good amount of paste onto your toothbrush and apply. Leave the paste on for 1 minute, then rinse, so as to avoid the acid effecting enamel. If you are using just water you can leave it on for up to 3 minutes.

Strawberry, Salt and Baking Soda ScrubStrawberries are high in Vitamin C, which can help break-down plaque that is causing your teeth to look yellow. It also has an enzyme called malic acid, which may help to remove surface stains. The salt acts as an abrasive portion of the paste, physically scrubbing away stain-causing gunk, and the baking soda is an extra touch that you can choose to leave out if you’d preferYou will need… - 1-3 large strawberries - A pinch of seat salt - 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda (optional)DirectionsMash the berries into a pulp, and add a pinch of sea salt and ½ teaspoon of baking soda, if you’re using it. Wipe any extra saliva off your teeth with a paper towel, and then apply a generous portion of the mixture to a toothbrush and apply. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes, then rinse. Do this nightly.

Our current obsession with decking says a lot about the British. Despite years of rain-soaked summers, we still believe that we have the ideal climate for outdoor living. Close your eyes and we are in New England - a land that boasts the highest density of decking in the world. We also like the low maintenance of it all. There is no time any more for weeding or mowing the lawn. We want potted plants and a surface that can be swept once a day. At least it is an improvement on crazy paving, although there are already signs that decking is passe - a late 1990s fad. The problem is at the cheap end of the market, where short cuts - untreated wood, ill-fitting square panels - are denting decking's wholesome image. The same thing happened inside the house, where laminated strips replaced real wooden floors. No surprise then, given our weather, that the American "deck room" - covered decking - is catching on fast. What the planners will make of it is anyone's guess. Decking dates back to 17th-century Japanese gardens, where bamboo platforms were used as viewing points. Modern day versions owe more to the colonial houses of America's Deep South. Today, Americans believe decking is all about "extending your living space". But, as it reaches further and further into the garden, the temptation to elaborate becomes too much. Wooden walkways become bridges, water features spring up around the barbecue enclosure, and before you know it, your garden has become a Ground Force nightmare.

Will it add value to my house?

Decking can add considerable value if, like a conservatory, it feels an integral and coherent part of the house. If it looks stuck-on and incongruous, it could prove a dubious asset. As a general rule, keep decking simple and subtle, rather than elaborate and faddish. Products with a long guarantee are likely to be an investment, but hang on to the certificate to show prospective buyers. Cheap, badly made decking will never add value, particularly if it has been poorly installed.

How much will it cost? The Outdoor Deck Company design, supplies and installs decking nationwide,

from £150 to £250 per sq m. Price depends on choice of wood, terrain, conditions, etc. Decks are mostly made from kiln-dried, pressure treated Southern Yellow Pine (durapine) and come with a 40-year guarantee. Hard wood decks are made using Iroko and Ip’e. Prices start at £210 per sq m. Timber can be supplied direct to DIY enthusiasts.Archadeck, an American based company, now designs, supplies and installs decking in the UK. A 12ft x 12ft raised living room deck with rails costs £2,850 including a 30-year guarantee. All decks, made from pressure-treated Scandinavian Western Red Cedar, come with two heaters which work by using short-wave technology to give radiant heat to any “bodies” in their range, rather than heating the surrounding air. (Watch out for their “deck room” at the Chelsea flower show.)The Timber Decking Association is an organisation of companies which advises home-owners about all aspects of decking.DIY decking is considerably cheaper. Prices start at around £35 per sq m.

Caveats

Decking has grown very fast in popularity. A number of disreputable suppliers have jumped on to the bandwagon, supplying poor quality products using inappropriate woods. Many decks that were installed five years ago are now having to be replaced. Always check that soft wood has been pressure-treated. Ask to see a sample and saw or cut through it: if you can see a ring of preservative, 3 or 4m in from the edge, it has not been properly treated and the wood will not last. Reject it. Preservative should penetrate all the way through the wood. Don’t automatically assume that hardwoods will last as long as properly treated soft woods.Always use stainless steel fittings. Screws are preferable for securing down boards. If the decking is raised and is to be used by children, make sure it has the necessary railings. Despite what manufacturers claim, decking can be treacherous in the wet. Keep it free of slippery algae.Planning permission is not generally required for flat decking. Consult your local authority about raised platforms. Always use timber from renewable or sustainable sources.

Everyone loves a good barbecue, but research

has shown that grilling meats at high heat

can cause the carcinogens heterocyclic amine

(HCA) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

(PAHs) to form.

Andit'snotaninsignificantamount.Onestudy found that people who consume well-

done meat—grilled, barbecued, pan fried, or

broiled—on a regular basis were 60% more

likely to get pancreatic cancer. Longer cooking

times might also increase the risk of stomach,

lung, and breast cancer.

But you don't have to give up your burgers

just yet. Read how to make grilling safer and

follow our 6 tips to making safe grilled fare.

Use a marinade

A 2008 study found that spicy marinades can

decrease HCA formation, so don’t be afraid to

sprinkle on the red pepper.

Certain spices are packed with antioxidants

that will help to eliminate HCAs in the grilling

process.Onestudyshowedthataddingspices, such as thyme, sage, and garlic, can reduce

the amount of total HCAs by 60% compared to

the control.

Rosemary may be especially potent. A

recent study found that high concentrations

of rosemary extracts may reduce HCAs by up

to 90% in some cases. Get inspired by these

marinated meals.

Add alco-

hol

At your

next

barbecue,

don’t forget

beer and

wine…for

your mar-

inade. We

know red

wine is full

of antioxi-

dants, and

this can

carry over

in your marinades.

Marinating beef in red wine for six hours

before grilling decreased the amount of

carcinogens—40% fewer than in beef that

wasn’t marinated—according to a study by the

University of Porto in Portugal.

This same study found similar positive

effects using beer, and participants gave the

beer-marinated beef top marks for quality.

Turn down the heat

Well done shouldn’t be in your vocabulary

if you’re

trying to

cut down

on carcino-

gens. Stud-

ies have

shown that

higher

temper-

atures

lead to an

increase in

HCAs.

Allow

some extra

time, and

try to cook

your meat below 325°F, which is the tempera-

ture at which HCAs begin to form.

To ensure that you’re meeting the mini-

mum cooking temperatures, invest in a meat

thermometer, and make sure your burgers

have an internal temperature of 160°F.

Precook food in the microwave

Beforeyourfireupthegrill, nukemeatinthemicrowave for one or two minutes at medium

power. Studies have shown that microwaving

meat for two minutes prior to cooking de-

creased HCAs by 90%. Just remember to throw

out the juice—that’s where the HCAs lurk.

Grill veggies

Grilled veggies offer that same hot-off-the-

grill taste but don’t contain carcinogens like

their meaty counterparts. are a great hearty

option. However, if you crave grilled meat,

make kebabs. Using half meat, half veggies is

healthier and cuts down on the HCAs.

Less is more when it comes to marinating

Though this may sound counterintuitive,

marinating meat for long lengths of times

may lower the percentage of antioxidants in

the sauces. A 2010 study found that marinat-

ingmeatinsauceforfivehourspriortoovenbaking cut down the antioxidant activity in

the sauce compared with cooking after shorter

marinating times.

Play it on the safe side by aiming to mari-

nate your meat for no more than a few hours.

Marinades don’t soak deep into the meat,

sothere’snotalotofflavoradvantagetoanovernight marinade. And brushing a little

extra sauce on the meat shortly before serving

could give you an extra boost of antioxidants.

MEASURE UP WITH TAG FLOORINGTAG Flooring: Graham Potts Graham has been a fitter for over 25-years, working for most of the major retailers in Belfast in a self-employed basis. The business was started as many businesses do, out of the necessity to gain work and keep busy in work. A simple advert on Facebook advertising carpet fitting was what started TAG Flooring. Through this work, Graham was able to see that customers wanted and needed help buying their carpets. Sometimes it was an ill-fitting carpet or something unfit for purpose. When Graham heard the price some people where paying for carpets that weren’t even fit for use he decided to start selling it himself. Who better to advise a customer about the right carpet for them than a carpet fitter? After a few years of building up a steady and loyal customer base, TAG flooring opened its first warehouse in the Valley Business Centre in November 2013, wanting to offer better value to customers. By May 2014 the business had expanded to the point it needed more space to both carry stock and have a showroom so that

people could come in and view the range of products on offer. Shortly after this TAG Flooring expanded its product range to offer Rugs and mirrors too. Graham is very passionate about what TAG Flooring is doing and really wants to drive the business forward to offer a wider range of products and great value to a wider customer base and is hoping to open a new premises in the not too distant future in a new area of Northern Ireland, so watch this space! TAG Flooring is a unique carpet company, it’s owned and operated by a carpet fitter rather than a business man or Sales person. They offer an honest and reliable service because they know their products inside out because they’ve fitted it. In all of their advertisements and on Facebook all pictures are of their own fitting.

Late Carvill goal seals Pre Season WinA late goal from new signing Michael Carvill saw Crusaders wintheirfirstpreseasonseasongameagainstWelshsideAirbus UK 3-2. An entertaining game saw both sides play free and open football and at a competitive pace.Crusaders started the brighter and had two half chances

before they where awarded a penalty after Paul Heatley was fouled and he performed his trickery. Dairmuid O'Carroll cooly stepped up and put Crusaders ahead after 11 minutes. Airbus where level within four minutes when they scored a close range header as the Crusaders defence was caught out. The game was both physical and competive and before long Airbus went 2-1 ahead. A long range effort seemed to deceive everyone and the ball "daisy cut" its way through everyone and into the corner of the net with Sean O'Neill stranded. Crusaders fought back with Paul Heatley in top form and the whole team raised the game. A Heatley effort was well saved by the keeper and the resulting corner produced a wonder goal. The ball was played in but eventually came to Paul Heatley 30 yards out and with one kick he volleyed the ball beyond the keeper into the net on 26 minutes. Both sides kept at and supporters enjoyed the rest of the half. The second half saw multiple substitutions so the game was a bit stop start. All the new signings where given a chancetoweartheshirtforthefirsttimeandnonelookedout of place. Jordan Owens was a constant thorn in the Airbus defence and he unlucky on several occasions not to get a goal. Jordan Forsythe showed several good touches when he came on and Andy Mitchell looked solid also. Both keepersmadefinesavesalsoandforbeingsoearlyinpreseason Crusaders looked sharp. As the game drew to a close it was Michael Carvill who won the game for Crusaders on 87 minutes and again it was a superb goal. The ball came to him 30 yards out and without a thought he hit it goalwards anditflewbythekeeperintothenet.Whatagoaltostartyour Crusaders career Michael. With little time left Airbus Uk could not come back and Crusaders had won 3-2. A good start and it was a well worthwhile game for everyone ahead of the Champions League game at Seaview on Tuesday.
