Mayor Congratulates

Jonathan Rea On

World Superbike

Championship Win

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Thomas Hogg sends his congratulations to Jonathan Rea on winning his first Superbike Championship at Jerez yesterday;“On behalf of everyone in the Borough of Antrim and Newtownabbey, I would like to congratulate Jonathan Rea on winning the World Superbike Championship. Winning the championship with still two rounds to go is a great achievement for the former Ballyclare man whose family still has very strong connections with the Borough.I hope Jonathan’s career continues to flourish and you never know, we might even see him racing against our other local motorcycling heroes, the Laverty brothers, in Moto GP. Good luck for the year ahead.”

Special Tree PlantingsSpecial tree planting ceremonies took place at Antrim Civic Centre and Mossley Mill last Wednesday (9 September) to mark HM Queen Elizabeth II becoming the longest reigning British monarch. The ceremonies, hosted by the Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Thomas Hogg, were attended by local MLAs, Elected Members and council staff. Rev Campbell Dixon MBE, the Mayor’s Chaplain, also offered a prayer at both ceremonies, which had been specially written for the occasion by the Church and approved by the Queen, for use on the day. Speaking at the events the Mayor commented, “Its gives me great pleasure to plant these red oak trees as an act of commemoration. On behalf of the people of the Borough, I have also written to Her Majesty the Queen to extend our very best wishes.”

Tree Planting at Antrim Civic Centre

NEWTOWNABBEY FOODBANK

Newtownabbey Foodbank opened on 12th April this year. It is a partnership with Trussell Trust and a large number of Churches across the denominations in the Newtownabbey area. The foodbank was the idea of Paddy and Carol Henderson from Salisbury. Carol was left a legacy by her mother whose surname was Trussell hence the name of the Charity. Statistics show that 13 million people in the UK live below the poverty line. People can find themselves in this situation through maritial breakdown and it can often take benefits some weeks to come through. It can be someone who is in employment but on a very low wage. It can be an older person living on a basic pension or young people who finds themselves’ homeless. A sudden crisis such as redundancy or an unexpected bill and people are forced to choose between paying rent or eating.

HOW THE FOODBANK WORKS

Non perishable food is donated by the public. That can be from Church congregations, Supermarket Collection days, permanent collection points in Supermarkets, Schools, Businesses or members of the public leaving food into the trolley in our Church reception. Most Churches ask for special collections at Harvest and Christmas when members of the congregation are asked to bring food instead of their collection. The generosity of the congregations and the general public is overwhelming. Tesco Northcott is our Store and we have a permanent collection point there where members of the public donate food as they are doing their shopping. We also have 2 x 3 day collections when we ask our volunteers to help man the stand and talk to the public about the foodbank. We have a great relationship with the staff at Northcott and they are really supportive. Our last collection was over 2500 ton of food. Tesco also give us one third of the value of the food in money.Volunteers Sort And Date The Food The food is then transported back to our store. All donated food has to be accounted for so it is weighed in and out. This is essential in the interests of good governance. It is dated and sorted as we have to be careful that we do not issue food that is out of date. In our store it is packed into hampers as we are still providing food for Social Services, Women’s Aid and our CAP ( Christians Against Poverty) clients. When we need to take it over to the Distribution Centre it is packed into shopping bags so that the individual looks as if they are carrying home their normal shopping. Distribution Centre The Distribution Centre is manned by a team of 4 volunteers with one taking on the role of Team Leader. The volunteers come from all the Churches. People coming in are invited to sit down at a table and offered tea or coffee. If there are children they are shown to a play area with toys. We are there to offer a listening ear but also to try to ascertain if they are getting support from another agency. If not we will offer a benefits check and support in applying for benefits. They are also signposted to other agencies such as CAB. For example we have CAP, the CAP job club, Manna the Children’s Charity shop and School uniform ministry. Clients are issued with vouchers from one of the agencies, which can be Social Services, Health Visitors, Ministers, headmasters or support services. A client is given 3 vouchers, which are for 3 days food. Once they have used 3 vouchers they can receive more but on the 4th occasion it will be flagged up on the computer to ask what other support can be given. If people come in without a voucher they can be given food but it is made clear to them that it will only happen once and if they require further support they must go to an agency for a voucher. We have already opened a Satellite of the Foodbank at Abbotscross Presbyterian Church and Ballyclare Presbyterian Church. We are also preparing to open another in Greencastle Methodist who are partnering with Whitehouse Presbyterian, St Mary’s and St Vincent de Paul. This will likely be in the middle of October. These Satellites provide people with the opportunity of calling into a Foodbank in their area without having to travel to Carnmoney. If people are unable to travel to a foodbank we have volunteers who will deliver the food. In addition if they call at the foodbank and are unable to carry the shopping bags home we will take them home.

Northern Ireland Hospice families pay tribute to their loved ones in Monkstown Wood…

Lisa Gibson’s family & friends

s a local charity caring for over 3,000 people,

Northern Ireland Hospice recognises just how important it is for families to commemorate the lives of their loved ones in a meaningful way. With this in mind Hospice offers these families the opportunity to set up a Tribute Fund in their loved one’s name. Last year these Tribute Funds raised over £64,000 which helped Hospice provide vital specialist care to adults, children and young people across the province. Every year families whose Tribute Fund has reached £1,000 are invited to special

service in Monkstown Wood to acknowledge their immense support and to unveil their loved one’s plaque on a bespoke Butterfly Sculpture. A commemorative tree is also planted in the newly designated Butterfly Grove, an area in this wood which has been especially dedicated to Northern Ireland Hospice. Lisa Gibson set up a Tribute Fund to commemorate her husband Richard and to date family and friends have raised over £33,000. Lisa feels that Richard’s Tribute Fund provides a positive focus for their family amidst their immense loss.

Lisa said, “Hospice really are a team of exceptional people and I wanted to ‘give something back’ to show appreciation for the fantastic care Richard received. We won’t ever stop missing him but it helps us all to know that every donation made really will make a difference to another hospice patient”. If you would like more information about Northern Ireland Hospice or about setting up a Tribute Fund, please contact Sharon Gorman on 028 9078 1836 or e mail [email protected]

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council Paint The Town Pink

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month by turning Antrim Civic Centre and Mossley Mill pink on Thursday 1st October. Northern Ireland’s leading local cancer charity, Action Cancer, has asked many local businesses in the borough to get involved in their Paint the Town Pink Campaign by decorating shop windows and holding small fundraisers during October. The Council is backing the campaign by lighting their offices in the colour pink which is globally associated with breast cancer. Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, Councillor Thomas Hogg, commented; “Only too many families throughout our Borough have been affected by breast cancer, so I’m delighted to add our support to Paint the Town Pink. This

high profile campaign will help raise awareness and ultimately save lives and I would encourage other businesses in the Borough to come on board. If adding a little bit of colour to our town can help save even one life, then it’s been worthwhile.” Action Cancer are the only charity in Northern Ireland to provide Breast Screening to women aged 40 – 49 and 70+, ages not included in the NHS screening programme. They offer 1000 appointments per month and detect an average of 5 cancers. The service is available from Action Cancer House in Belfast and regionally on board the Big Bus. Last year the charity screened a record 10,000 women. Action Cancer’s Marion Fisher commented;“We are so delighted to have the support of Antrim and Newtownabbey Council with Paint The Town Pink. We are

very excited and thank everyone in the area who has agreed to take part. We will be tying pink ribbons round trees in support of breast cancer awareness and hope to raise some money for Action Cancer’s breast screening service too” Each participant taking part in Paint The Town Pink will receive a box of fundraising materials including pink balloons, bunting, collection boxes and ideas on how to raise some money. The campaign is sponsored by Johnsons Coffee who are have provided a packet of their own brew filter coffee for every box. As part of the Paint The Town Pink Campaign the Action Cancer Big Bus will visit the Whiteabbey Community Centre, Glenville Road on 17th October and Castle Mall Car Park in Antrim on Wednesday 28th October. Appointments are available for breast screenings and health checks and can be booked by phone on 028 9080 3344 or online www.actioncancer.org If you would like to get involved Paint The Town Pink please contact Marion Fisher on 028 9086 7429.

Cycling enthusiasts from Newtownabbey are invited to put their endurance skills to the test by competing in the famous Granite Challenge to help raise funds for charity.Taking place on Sunday 4th October 2015, the long distance cycle will mark the start of World Mental Health Week, with proceeds going towards local charity, Action Mental Health (AMH). The money raised will enable AMH to provide life-changing services to help those living with a mental illness to recover from its effects through reskilling, employment, support and advice. Supported by cycling club, La Lanterne Rouge, the brave participants will be put through their paces by embarking on a 55 mile route that starts at AMH’s New Horizons Service in Downpatrick, through the scenic surroundings of the Mournes and Spelga Dam, before returning back home via Bryansford, Maghera and Clough. Chief Executive of Action Mental Health, David Babington said: “Research has shown that a staggering one in five people in Northern Ireland experience a mental health illness at some

stage in their lives (Public Health Agency, 2014), with exercise playing an increasingly important role in the recovery process. “We at AMH can’t think of a better way to kick-start World Mental Health Week than with a high endurance challenge that epitomises how determination, motivation and peer support can help to achieve something truly remarkable, despite the physical and mental barriers along the way.“I would like to say a huge thank you to all our sponsors who have helped us organise this incredible event and wish all the best of luck to those participating.” Food and refreshments will be provided for on the day, with the added benefit of a soothing sports massage at the finish line for competitors, kindly provided by North Down Physio and Sports Injury Clinic.Entrance fee is £15 which includes a goody bag, tea stop at Spelga Dam and Lunch. This investment has extended and modernised the fitness suite to include 17 cardiovascular machines and 12 resistance machines. In addition there is now an increased muscular strength endurance section with additional free weights and a separate functional strength and conditioning area incorporating plyometric platforms, TRX cables and a range of sand bags. Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Thomas Hogg commented, “Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is committed to the continued

development of sport and physical activity throughout the Borough. Engaging our community in physical activity is vitally important and this £200,000 investment in the fitness suite is just one way of helping achieve the Council’s aim of making more people, more active, more often.” Ray Herron, a long term member of the fitness suite added ‘Being a member of Ballyearl fitness suite for such

Community Park Officially Opensn exciting new state-of-the-art facility was launched this week, as the Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council,

Councillor Thomas Hogg, officially opens ‘V36’.

A

Situated beside the Valley Leisure Centre in Newtownabbey and named after the postcode of the area, the ‘V36’ project received £3.58m EU PEACE III funding and has transformed an area of contested, under-used open space into an iconic new shared facility. A floodlit 3G pitch suitable for football, rugby and Gaelic sports has been created, in addition to a civic linear park with a performance area for events and a unique ‘Gulliver’s Travels’- themed adventure play area for families. The park also includes areas of open space, paths, public art displays and a picnic area.   These new attractions will complement the existing leisure and play facilities currently on offer at the Valley Leisure Centre.Speaking at the launch, the Mayor commented:“This wonderful new shared space provides an opportunity for local people and visitors from all backgrounds to come together through sport, recreation and arts-based activities.  Set in the backdrop of the stunning Cave Hill and with views of Belfast Lough, this site has been totally transformed into an area that can be enjoyed by all.  After consultation with local communities, sports clubs, community groups, schools and residents, work started in November last year.  It is

due to the shared vision and drive of many that we are standing here today.”   Welcoming the launch of the new facility, Finance Minister Arlene Foster MLA, said:  “The aims of the PEACE III Programme, to promote cooperation and reconciliation, have been achieved in the development and realisation of this new shared facility. The new park offers an opportunity for the local community, in Newtownabbey and across North Belfast, to come together in a shared space to enjoy sports, events and play.   The ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ adventure play area echoes one of the themes, in Jonathan Swift’s first books, of sharing the space in which we live and by children playing together we can improve community relations and build towards a shared society.”Gina McIntyre, Chief Executive (Designate) of the Special EU Programmes Body which manages the PEACE III Programme said:“Creating shared public spaces is a key focus of the PEACE III Programme, and we are delighted that, Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has successfully delivered ‘V36’, which, by working in close consultation with the local community, has reclaimed what was previously contested space for the purposes of building positive relationships within the local area.”

“In addition to the shared sports facilities, ‘V36’ will bring a range of long-term benefits, enhancing reconciliation through bringing people together at events, creating better levels of health and well-being, increasing confidence and becoming a source of pride for the community”, she continued.Match-funding for the project has been provided by the Department for Social Development in Northern Ireland and the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government in Ireland. Alan Kelly T.D., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government added:“It gives me great pleasure to see the opening of this marvellous facility, achieved with the help of funding through the PEACE III EU co-funded Programme for Peace and Reconciliation. It is wonderful to be involved in such developments as a co-funder of the Programme. I would like to congratulate Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, working in conjunction with the local community, on the success of this project, which I am positive will be enjoyed by all long into the future with a sense of pride and unity.”For more information or to book the ‘V36’ event space or 3G pitch, contact the Valley Leisure Centre Tel: 028 9086 1211

Are you concerned about your child’s progress in school?Contact us to book a FREE evaluation

Thanks to Learning Breakthrough our Autistic son has been

able to show emotion in ways we never thought possible. He

expresses love, I am regularly covered in kisses and he tells

me every day “mummy – I love you so so much”. We always

have a good chat at bedtime and recently when I kissed

him and told him I loved him he said “mummy – you made

my heart grow”. A rather profound statement for any 5 year

old but for a child who barely spoke a year before it felt like

nothing short of a miracle.

It has been a hard road from when I first started to notice my son wasn’t reaching his milestones when he was about

2.5. His speech and understanding of language weren’t

progressing, he was a very strong willed child, emotionally

volatile, preferred his own company, had poor balance and

spatial awareness, refused most foods and began to hand

flap and twist when excited – all red flags for ASD.As time went on his autistic traits became more pronounced

and I felt like I was losing my son. He found it difficult to engage in conversation and to make eye contact. He paid

very little attention to his little sister and wouldn’t let anyone

do anything for him except me. He refused to go anywhere,

his anxiety was taking over all our lives – he wouldn’t go

to the park, to visit family, to soft play areas or birthday

parties ….. all things a 3 year old should enjoy. Not to

mention the things a 3 year old doesn’t enjoy – paediatrician

appointments, assessments, occupational therapy, speech

therapy …. it was a nightmare for both of us.

I have always loved and accepted my son for who he is but

what I’ve refused to accept is that I can’t do anything to help

him. I began researching anything and everything that could

help my beautiful boy. A friend told me about an advert

she heard on the radio about the Learning Breakthrough

Program. I decided to go along to an information evening

where I listened to Susan describe her journey and the science behind the LBP. I left that night full of hope and

certain that I had found the answer to helping my son.

Susan came to visit us in our home where he would feel comfortable and relaxed – he had just turned 4. We

discussed the exercises that he would be capable of doing

given his age and I started with a few minutes once a day

building up to ten minutes a day. He wasn’t able to catch so

I started with blowing bubbles and getting him to pop them

whilst balancing on the board. Gradually he learned to catch

and has become an expert at the pendulum ball and bouncy

balls. We can’t do all of the exercises yet but he’s only just

turned 5.

I can tell you it is hard work and is not for the faint hearted

but neither are the challenges of raising a child with autism

– the daily battles of teeth brushing, dressing, going to

school, dinnertime …. I thought, what’s one more thing to

add to the day when it could potentially make all those other

struggles disappear?!

Within weeks of starting the program he began to become

an adventurous little boy – my son learned to ride a bike,

something I thought I might never see! Rather than cry

in the car outside the park he asked to go and climbed

everything he could without fear. He started school in

September and has settled in so well and coped with the curriculum without difficulty. His teacher told me recently that he’s a very popular member of the class and he comes

home every day with stories of everything he’s done and who

he’s played with. Going to parties fills him with excitement

and I watch him join in with his friends and it fills me with pride – these are the things that other parents might take for

granted, as I’m sure I would have too had my precious son

not taught me what really matters in life.

I cannot remember the last time he had a serious meltdown,

he still gets upset and frustrated but he expresses his

feelings now rather than letting them get the better of him.

He has a lovely relationship with his sister now and he has

become very close to his dad whereas before he didn’t

really let anyone get too close except me. He was recently

dis-charged from community speech therapy because

his assessment scores had improved so much, his speech

therapist also commented that she didn’t see the same

anxiety problems and unwillingness to cooperate.

I couldn’t have done this without Susan’s encouragement and support. Her office sign reads ‘Unlock your potential’ and that is exactly what has happened to our child – he is

no longer ‘locked in’. She truly wants the very best for every family that she works with. I am so grateful that Susan and the LBP came into our lives. Previously the future filled me with overwhelming fear, I still worry – as every mother does,

but not to the extent that I used to. I’m happy knowing I’m

doing my best for my son and I’m watching him grow into a

wonderful little man.

We’re one year on and I’m aware that we still have a long

road ahead as he still has some problems but I watch my son

now enjoying his life – laughing, singing and dancing and I

think to myself that anything’s possible …..

“Having witnessed such a difference in her

own children and home life in general,

Susan wanted to provide the programme to other families. A chance conversation

with her friend led to her 28 year old Son becoming Susan’s first ‘guinea pig’. He

had struggled with Dyslexia all his life, had blocked out primary school as it had been

so hard. He was sent to another school for

extra English while his classmates went

swimming or did Art. His parents had tried

everything from coloured glasses, flashing light therapy to changing every light bulb in

their house to natural light bulbs – none of

which worked for him.

The reason he agreed to be the ‘guinea pig’ was that he had started to stutter at 28

and was becoming quite withdrawn. He

wouldn’t go for interviews in work and as a

result could not reach his full potential. He

diligently did the exercises for 15 minutes,

once per day for one year.

After a couple of weeks of doing the

exercises his stuttering stopped. A few weeks

later he was able to just go to bed and go to

sleep (he had been lying awake for hours

before starting the exercises). He was more

motivated and organised and he no longer

has problems with his memory. At 7 months

he noticed that he was retaining spellings

and read his first book ever on holiday. This year he completed a Business

Management Course in the BMC in Belfast.

He went for that interview and got the job!!!

He sent a text to Susan saying;“I wouldn’t have even thought of applying

for the job before as I couldn’t have

managed the interview”.

The Volkswagen Group has announced plans to recall the 11 million vehicles affected by the diesel scandal - with over 1.1 million UK vehicle owners affected. According to VW; “step by step, affected customers will be contacted, with details of a process to get their vehicles corrected in the near future. In the meantime, all vehicles are technically safe and roadworthy.” VW is still quiet over exactly which VIN numbers are affected, but the Group has said the following numbers of UK vehicles are set for a recall: VW Group recall: numbers of UK cars affected

DUNLOP DOMINATES AT KILLALANE

Michael Dunlop powered to a winning double in the open and grand final races while brother William won both supersports events in the final Irish road race of the season at Killalane. In the open race, in front of a massive crowd who lined the 3.6 mile north Dublin track Dunlop riding the MD raceing BMW had a five second win over early leader, Kawasaki mounted derek Shiels with William Dunlops third place for the Tyco BMW rider was enough to clinch the Irish superbike title for the first time. When it came to the grand final, Shiels again made a flyer of a start, chased but Derek McGee and Michael Dunlop.Slowly but surely Dunlop reeled Mcgee in, and when Shiels pulled out the Ballymoney ace swept into the lead pulverising the opposition, taking the chequered flad 12.5 seconds clear of McGee with William Dunlop again taking the final podium step. William Dunlop aboard the Dowd/Curran racing Yamaha dominated both supersport races. The opening event was red flagged due to a non-serious incident and in the four lap re-start it

was Dunlop who tookm the win from Seamus Elliott, the difference between them at the flag was just 0.9 seconds with McGee in third.Dunlop unbeaten this season at national meetings, held off mcgee to win the second supersport race by 1.5 seconds as Elliott had to settle for third this time out.Irish champion Derek McGee was a start to finish winner in the supertwins class, hotly pursued by Connor Behan, unable to find a way past Behan finished a close second, 4 seconds behind the winner Czech rider Michal Dokoupil completed the top three. In the combined 250/400cc races Davy Morgan was the surprise winner from Neil Kernohan in the 250cc class while Seamus Eliiott outpaced Dokoupil in the 400cc’s.Sammy Wilson riding the Joeys Bar Honda, had a comfortable victory over Sam Dunlop and Nigel Moore in the 125cc race and in the Junior and Senior support races the respective winners were Adam McLean and Kevin Fitzpatrick.

CLASSIC TT RACES

Bradfords Dean Harrison won the opening 500cc Classic TT Race on the Isle of Man, taking the lead on the first lap when hot favourites John McGuinness and Ryan Farquhar retired their Winfield Paton machines in Ramsey. Ian Lougher winner of the corresponding race last year was runner up 26.5 seconds adrift of the winner, but the Welshman could have made the double had he not incurred a 30 second penalty for speeding in the pit lane. Harrisons Black Eagle Racing MV Agusta team mate Lee Johnston from Maguiresbridge was third.Taking over the lead on the first lap of the 350cc Classic Race Michael Rutter riding the Ripley Land Racing Honda went on to win his first Classic TT race. The popular midlander

was challenged by Dan Cooper until he retired on the third and final lap getting second spot to Philip McGurk followed in third place by Doug Snow.Michael Dunlop aboard the Steve Wheatman Suzuki reclaimed his Formula 1 Classic crown takin the title away from Bruce Anstey, last years winner. The pair were fighting tooth and nail for the lead when Anstey was forced to take an unscheduled pit stop at the end of lap three of four to repair a faulty exhaust on the Valvoline/Padgett Yamaha.Fighting back bravely the Kiwi rider finished as the runner up by 1.9 seconds, setting a new lap record at 126.261 MPH, forching Ryan Farquhar back into third.
