Myanmar committee to review

political prisoners’ detentionLondon: Myanmar will be establishing a committee to

review the detention of its remaining political prisoners.

The government has previously referred to all detainees as

criminals, but it now said that it will define which can be

classified as prisoners of conscience and then work towards

their release. It said that the committee will include officials

and representatives of political parties and civil society, the

BBC reports. A presidential spokesman said the release of

prisoners was key to national reconciliation. Ye Htut said

that first ‘it is important to decide who will be designated as

political prisoners’. According to the report, a spokesman

for the rights group Former Political Prisoners, Kyaw

Hlaing, welcomed the government’s recognition of the

jailed dissidents and said he hoped they would be released

by the middle of the year. He added that about 240 were still

being held. The government promised the review last year

ahead of a visit by US President Barack Obama, the report

said. It has already freed thousands of prisoners in a series

of amnesties, including several hundred political prisoners

in January 2012. Among them were some of the country's

most prominent dissidents, it added.

Tory councillor compared Muslim

kids to bin bags, suspendedLondon: A local Tory councillor has been suspended for

posting a comment on Facebook comparing Muslim

children wearing burqas to garbage bags. Chris Joannides,

the Conservative councillor for Enfield, in north London,

has denied being Islamophobic and defended his comments

as ''blokeish banter'', reports the Daily Mail. Joannides

posted a photo showing a woman and child dressed in

burqas standing next to two bin bags, and wrote underneath:

"I saw her standing there and I told her she had three

beautiful children. She didn't have to get all p****d off and

threaten me. It was an honest mistake!" Joannides, who is

of Greek-Cypriot heritage, insisted he took his duties

seriously despite the ''blokeish banter'' written on his

Facebook page. He denied being an Islamophobic. He said

he would always do his best for all residents of Enfield

irrespective of their political leanings, sexual orientation,

religious beliefs or cultural background.

MOSCOW, OCT 20

(INS INDIA): Russia

hosted talks on

Afghanistan on

Wednesday involving

senior representatives of

the Taliban and other

factions, a round of

diplomacy that underlines

Moscow's clout.

Opening the talks,

Russian foreign minister

Sergey Lavrov emphasized

that "forming a really

inclusive government fully

reflecting the interests of

not only all ethnic groups

but all political forces of

the country" is necessary to

achieve a stable peace in

Afghanistan.

Russia had worked for

years to establish contacts

with the Taliban, even

though it has designated

the group a terrorist

organization in 2003 and

never took it of the list.

Any contact with such

groups is punishable under

Russian law, but the

Foreign Ministry has

responded to questions

about the apparent

contradiction by saying

that its exchanges with the

Taliban are essential for

helping stabilize

Afghanistan.

The Soviet Union

fought a 10-year war in

Afghanistan that ended

with its troops

withdrawing in 1989. In

recent years, Moscow has

made a strong comeback

as an influential power

broker in international

talks on Afghanistan,

hosting the Taliban

representatives and

members of other factions

for bilateral and

multilateral meetings.

Unlike many other

countries, Russia hasn't

evacuated its embassy in

Kabul and its ambassador

has maintained regular

contacts with the Taliban

after they took over the

Afghan capital in August.

Lavrov in his opening

speech at the conference

commended the Taliban

for their efforts to stabilize

the situation in the country

and ensure the operation of

state structures.

Last week, Russian

President Vladimir Putin

noted that there must be no

rush in officially

recognizing the Taliban as

the new rulers of

Afghanistan, but

emphasized the need to

engage in talks with them.

At the same time, he

emphasized the security

challenges posed by the

Islamic State group and

other militants based in

northern Afghanistan, and

noted that drug trafficking

from Afghanistan will

continue to present a

challenge.

(INS INDIA): The WorldHealth Organization saidthere was a 7% rise in newcoronavirus cases acrossEurope last week, the onlyregion in the world wherecases increased.

In its weeklyassessment of thepandemic released late onTuesday, the UN healthagency said there wereabout 2.7 million newCovid-19 cases and morethan 46,000 deaths lastweek, similar to thenumbers reported theprevious week. Britain,Russia and Turkeyaccounted for the mostcases.

The biggest drop inCovid-19 cases were seenin Africa and the Western

Pacific, where infectionsfell by about 18% and16%, respectively. Thenumber of deaths in Africaalso declined by about aquarter, despite the direshortage of vaccines onthe continent. Otherregions including theAmericas and the MiddleEast, reported similarnumbers to the previousweek, WHO said.

But for the thirdconsecutive week, coronavirus cases havejumped in Europe, withabout 1.3 million newcases. More than half ofcountries in the regionreported a rise in theirCovid-19 numbers, WHOsaid.

In the past week,Russia has repeatedly

broken new daily recordsfor Covid-19 cases and thenumber of infections in theUK has surged to levelsnot seen since mid-July.

Although the head ofBritain's National HealthService has urged thegovernment to introducestricter Covid-19 protocolsincluding mask-wearingand the faster vaccinationof children, politicianshave so far demurred.

In Russia, officialshave struggled tovaccinate its populationand only about 32% ofpeople have beenimmunized despite theavailability of its SputnikV vaccine. It has by far thelargest death toll inEurope, with more than225,000 deaths.

LAHORE, OCT 20

(INS INDIA): Pakistan's

Opposition parties on

Wednesday accused Prime

Minister Imran Khan of

selling gifts he received

from other countries'

heads, including an

expensive watch worth $1

million.

Gifts are routinely

exchanged between heads

of states or officers

holding constitutional

positions during a state

visit. According to the gift

depository (Toshakhana)

rules, these gifts remain

the property of the state

unless sold at an open

auction. Rules allow

officials to retain gifts with

a market value of less than

Rs 10,000 without paying

anything, The Express

Tribune newspaper

reported.

"Imran Khan has sold

the gifts he received from

other countries," PML-N

vice president Maryam

Nawaz tweeted in Urdu.

"Caliph Hazrat Omar

(companion of Prophet

Muhammad) was

accountable for his shirt

and robe and you (Imran

Khan), on the other hand,

looted foreign gifts from

Toshakhana and you are

talking of setting up a state

of Madina? How can a

person (Khan) be this

insensitive, deaf, dumb

and blind?" asked the

daughter of deposed prime

minister Nawaz Sharif.

Opposition alliance --

Pakistan Democratic

Movement (PDM) --

president Maulana Fazlur

Rehman said there are

reports that prime minister

Khan has sold a precious

watch he received from a

prince. "This is shameful,"

he said.

Social media is rife

with reports that Khan was

gifted a watch worth $1

million by a prince of a

Gulf country. The watch

was allegedly sold in

Dubai by Khan's close

aide and $1 million was

given to the prime

minister. The prince

reportedly knows the

selling of the watch he

gifted to Khan.

Pakistan Muslim

League-Nawaz (PML-N)

Punjab president Rana

Sanaullah told a press

conference on Wednesday

that Pakistan was defamed

because of the alleged

selling of the gifts

received by the premier

from the heads of the

states of other countries.

Special Assistant to

the Prime Minister on

Political Communication,

Dr Shahbaz Gill, had

earlier said the

government was

"maintaining secrecy"

over details of gifts

received by Prime

Minister Khan from other

heads of states as releasing

their lists and "comparing

them with those of other

countries is considered

inappropriate, especially

by Islamic countries with

whom Pakistan enjoys

brotherly relations".

"Usually PM Imran

Khan deposits such gifts to

the Toshakhana, however,

if he desires to retain them

with him, he has to pay an

amount for it," he had said.

Last month, the

Pakistan government

refused to make public

details of gifts given to the

prime minister by foreign

heads of states, asserting

that the disclosure can

damage the country's

national interest and its

relations with other states,

after the Pakistan

Information Commission

sought details from the

Khan-led Pakistan

Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI)

government in response to

an application from a

citizen on the issue. Families walk outside the Kart-e-Sakhi shrine in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Afghanistan

it: Taliban at

Moscow meetingMOSCOW: The

Taliban's interim

government's Deputy Prime

Minister Abdul Salam Hanafi

has said that Afghanistan is

stabilised now and no country

will be threatened by it, a

media report said.

Speaking at the Moscow

Format Dialogue on

Afghanistan on Tuesday,

Hanafi said that the Taliban

will ensure that there will no

threat, according to

TOLOnews. Calling on the

international community to

recognise the Taliban's interim

government, he emphasised

that isolating Afghanistan

MOSCOW, OCT 20 (INS

INDIA) :Russia reported

Wednesday a record 1,028 Covid

deaths in a single day, with President

Vladimir Putin expected to

introduce new nationwide

restrictions in Europe's worst

affected country.

The new figures bring Russia's

official death toll to 226,353 -- the

highest on the continent even as

authorities have been accused of

vastly downplaying the severity of

the pandemic.

The country also recorded

34,074 new virus cases, according to

an official tally.

Infection rates have soared in

recent weeks amid a stalled

vaccination program, with only 35

percent of the country fully

innoculated.

Putin is expected later on

Wednesday to rule on a government

proposal to introduce a nationwide

week-long holiday at the end of the

month to curb the spread of the

virus.

Under the plan, Russians will

not go to work the first week of

November, which coincides with

national school holidays.

Putin has introduced paid

holidays during coronavirus peaks

before, most recently in May.

On Tuesday, Moscow Mayor

Sergei Sobyanin ordered the

capital's first coronavirus restrictions

since the summer.

He told unvaccinated over-60s

in Moscow to work from home and

extended mandatory vaccinations

for service workers. Those

restrictions take effect next Monday

and are set to last until the end of

February.

Sobyanin also told employers to

move 30 percent of their staff to

home working.

The surge in cases has come

without any strict restrictions in

place to limit Covid-19's spread and

as authorities struggle to counter

widespread anti-vaccine sentiment.

Life in Moscow, which is home

to more than 12 million people, was

normal on Wednesday, with

restaurants and other indoor

entertainment venues open as usual.

Officials warned the worst was

yet to come and that the number of

hospitalisations was growing at a

rate faster than in previous waves.

"The coronavirus situation in

Moscow is worsening," said the

city's deputy mayor Anastasia

Rakova.

She said it was the first time the

capital has seen such 30-percent

growth in cases for five consecutive

weeks.

"In no previous period have we

observed such a high growth rate."

Russia has struggled to

inoculate its citizens despite

domestic vaccines including Sputnik

V being widely available.

Despite Putin repeatedly calling

on Russias to get vaccinated,

independent polls show that more

than half do not plan to get a shot.

The 69-year-old leader said he

has been vaccinated with Sputnik V.

Last month, he self-isolated for

two weeks after dozens of virus

cases were detected in his inner

circle.The longtime Russian leader

insists that the country has handled

the pandemic better than most

countries, but even top officials have

recently voiced concern.

Pyotr Tolstoy, deputy chairman

of the lower house, said at the

weekend that the authorities had

"completely lost" an information

campaign on coronavirus."There is

no trust in people to go and

vaccinate themselves, it is a fact," he

said. Putin's spokesman on Tuesday

urged Russians to be "more

responsible" and admitted that the

government could have done more

to explain the "lack of alternative to

vaccines".
