Community Event PhotographerBy Harold Noeller

I was informed that Marilyn & Ray Fredrick are leaving us in August. Marilyn was our com-munity event photographer and will be missed. The many great pictures of our events are evident on the Recent Activities page of our website. So with that said, the community is in need of a photographer to take pictures during an

event once we get back to having them.If interested please give me a call @744-3181 to discuss.

The Paradise Island Homeowners Association, Inc.By Mary Ross, President and Renée D’Arcy, Director

Mary would like to thank all the residents for their good wishes and prayers. She is recuperating at home. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

REMINDER: Let’s get ready this is hurricane season. It is predicted to be a more busier and active season. Please refer to the June newsletter, we hope you have saved the information for future reference.

We also have the challenge of keeping ourselves safe from the covid-19. There will be no bingo at this time. When the CDC relaxes their guidelines, we will prepare for our fun Thursday nights and Frank’s delicious meals. We are all anxious to play and see each other.

Please follow the advice of the CDC and medical experts. We know that wearing a mask is a personal decision but one that could save your life. So far all that has worked in our favor is the 6 feet distancing and wearing a mask. The more we follow these guidelines, the sooner we will get rid of this covid-19. As Dr. Fauci said: “Not wearing a mask shows disrespect to others”. We are now in Phase II of the state reopening but do not let your guards down, the virus is still here and not under control yet. The number of deaths in our state is on the rise as the number of confirmed cases.

It has been brought to the attention of the HOA’s that a resident driving his golf cart at mid-night was up and down on the sidewalks to avoid going over the speed humps. He then beeped his horn (non-stop) which started every dog in the area to bark and wake up the residents. If it happens again the management will be notified.

PROTECT YOURSELF, WHEN YOU ARE, YOU ARE ALSO PROTECTING ALL THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU AND WILL NOT HAVE TO ANSWER THE QUESTION: WHICH ONE OF YOUR FAMILY OR FRIENDS ARE YOU WILLING TO SACRIFICE?

Attention New Residents By Marcia White

We are not able to do any Welcome Visits at this time and have not done any in the last 2 months. We are following the CDC guidelines for your safety. If you are a new resident and filled out your new resident form during your interview with the office,

we will be calling you to set up a visit and bring you some great information and a few gifts as well, once the CDC says it OK to do so.

In the meantime Welcome to Paradise and we hope you are enjoying your new home even under these trying times. If you need any help with information regarding the Social Committee, please feel free to call me and I will give the information or direct you to who might be able to assist. Marcia White 727-953-3616 (president of the SC)

Social Committee UpdatesBy Marcia White

Wow It’s July already!!!! Since we are still in a holding pattern from Covid 19 the Social Committee did not host any events this month. Our Library, Media Room and Puzzles are now available on a limited basis on the days the clubhouse is

open. Unfortunately the Pavilion is still closed because of social distancing regulations.. As of the time I am writing this article it looks like we will be cancelling the July pool party.

We cannot host an event that we are not able to invite the entire community to, so until we can, the SC will remain on hold. We apologize for this but everyone’s safety is first and foremost at this time.

We have had some changes to our committee over the past month. 1. Nadine Peters has generously volunteered to chair the new committee for the Craft Fair

this year. We wish to Thank Delores Wagner for chairing the event for the past 2 years. You are appreciated.

2. As we stated last month Jim Shumaker resigned caring for the Pavilion and we Thank him for his time with us. Leslie Cowley and her husband Rick have stepped up to take over. Thank you for stepping up to help out.

3. Wikki Pyne has resigned as the chairperson for the Craft Club due to illness. We wish her well

Paradise Island Annual Craft FairBy Nadine Peters – Annual Craft Fair Committee

With the lock down from the COVID-19 many of you have crafts projects done far ahead of schedule. That being said, the Paradise Island Annual Craft Fair committee is making plans so you can sell your items and help the rest of us finish our giving

shopping lists. The Annual Craft Fair will be held Saturday November 7th, from 9 am to 2 pm at the PI Clubhouse. Everyone is looking forward to seeing what new and creative items have been made. Spaces are $15 for wall space and $10 interior space.

As in the past, a Bake Sale will be held in conjunction with the Annual Craft Fair. Baked goods also make great gifts or just save you baking time for your holiday parties. More information will be printed in the next few months of the Monthly Media. If you

would like to serve on the Annual Craft Fair planning committee or have any questions or sug-gestions, please contact Nadine Peters. Call or text 402-750-3083; email: [email protected]; stop by 631 Palm Island.

We're aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life as we all practice social and physical distancing. While we're continuing to plan events, we will follow the CDC guidelines for the safety of everyone involved.

Men’s ClubBy Art Yeo

Another month has come and gone and we are still feeling the effects of COVID-19. Here in the north, (Sault Ste. Marie, ON), we are still relatively free of the virus with no deaths recorded as of June 6th.

The Men’s Club is optimistically hopeful of a full calendar of events for the fall and winter of 2020-2021. Here is the tentative schedule for entertainment:

Sat., Nov. 21 – Bill CastnerSat., Dec. 12 – Christmas Party (Tom Davis)Sat., Jan. 16 – Cahal DunnSat., Feb. 20 - Tom Davis and FriendsSat., Mar., 13 – Eddie MichaelSat., Apr., - Crystal Gage

We are looking forward to each and every performance for the benefit of Paradise Island residents. Keep in mind that these performances depend on the present rules for social distanc-ing and the commitment of the performers. We will keep you informed in future articles.

Until we see you in the fall, stay healthy, stay safe and continue to listen to the medical experts.

Letter to the Editor

BUTTERFLIES IN YOUR YARD

Entice butterflies to stay, eat, mate and lay eggs in your garden with these plants and tips.Planting your garden with plants that attract butterflies is only one step in making your garden butterfly-friendly. Once butterflies discover your garden the females will lay eggs

on plants that become food for the hatching caterpillars. The host plant selected, and the time of year the eggs are laid, de-

pends on the species of butterfly. Different butterflies prefer different host plants. Unfortunately, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution if your aim is to entice a diverse selection of butterflies into your garden. Monarchs like to feed on common plants like milkweed. While other species are ferocious eaters of many of our favorite garden herbs. Fennel, parsley, and dill make good hosts for Black Swallowtails. Often overlooked when speaking about butterfly hosts are trees and shrubs, but they are just as important as the plants listed above.

Remember to avoid using pesticides in your garden. If you are having a problem with pests in your garden opt for safer treatments instead of using broad spectrum pesticides.

Use alternatives like horticultural oils and soaps and make sure you don't accidentally spray any caterpillars. Many pests, like aphids, can be removed by simply clipping the stem they’re attached to and disposing of it. Put on a pair of garden gloves to pick and squish larger pests like slugs and beetles.

VETERAN’S CORNERBy Bob Behm, US ARMY (RET)

If you know a Veteran who during COVID 19 has experienced a fi-nancial hardship due to a lost job or having been laid off let me know as my organization the Military Officers Association of America is

offering 500-dollar grants. These grants are open to all ranks and US uniformed services and caregivers for these vets. What we will help with:

• Rent• Mortgage• Auto Loan/Lease• Utilities (electric, water, heat)• Cell phone payments• Internet accessThe grant cannot exceed the equivalent of three months of delinquent payments. Only one

$500 grant per household. Any bill presented with a past due date prior to March 1, 2020, will not be considered. Grants are available on first-come, first-served basis. You will need to provide proof of negative financial impact (layoff, reduced hours, etc.) because of the COVID-19 crisis.

If you know somebody that meets the requirements above contact me at [email protected] and I will send you an application.

VA Medical Centers INFO:VA medical centers will begin broadening services in phases with limited services for Vet-

erans. As our staff begins welcoming back Veterans, we will continue safety measures includ-ing physical distancing, face coverings required, and staff and Veteran screening for signs of COVID-19 infection. Because the safety of our Veterans and staff is our priority, VA facilities may not expand to a full spectrum of care immediately. Factors VHA uses to determine expan-sion of health services are based on facility circumstance and the differing clinical needs of each Veteran. This flexibility allows facilities to provide safe care taking local circumstances into account. Consult your medical center’s website for current status and contact information.

As we continue to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re all working to keep Veterans and VA staff healthy. To protect Veterans and staff, everyone must:• wear face coverings or masks at all VA facilities• be screened for COVID-19 symptoms or exposures before entering, to include a temperature

checkVA medical centers will also have limited access points and new processes for visitors and

patients to ensure everyone’s safety. Look for signs indicating new entranceways and new entry procedures to protect patients and staff.

PARADISE ISLAND PLANET JULY, 2020 E28

In MemoriamBy Marilyn Frederick

During this time of the Corona Virus, it is sad that no memorial services could be held for our deceased park residents. We pay tribute to them here.

Lola Morrison, #156, died May 15, 2020. She is survived by her husband Jim; two sons, Michael (wife Andrea) and Jimmy (wife Melody), and four grand-children. Lola was an artist and active in the Tampa Chapter of Decorative Artists. Services were held on May 26 at the Faith Baptist Church in New Port Richey.

Thomas "Tommy" Lisk, #521, died April 27, 2020. No additional information was provided.

"Those who have brought us joy, made us laugh and shown us love, has given us the lasting gifts of a beautiful life and blessed our memories forever."

The Social Committee accepted Marilyn Fredricks resignation since they are moving in August. All passing’s should be reported to Marcia White at 727-953-3616 until further notice. I have asked for a volunteer to take over the Sunshine Lady duties in my SC Update article. If you know of someone who might be able to help and take over please feel free to contact me at the above number…

"Don't be sad for me, we all come to this world to be tourists, enjoy life, go sightseeing, do good deeds. I just happen to be leaving earlier than others." - Connie Threadgill

New Residents Joining our CommunityBy Nancy Sullivan and Nancy Jonas

If you are a new resident of Paradise Island, we would like to schedule a short visit with you; go over the events in our park, and give you some freebies. Thank you

See, when you drive home today, you’ve got a big windshield on the front of your car. And you’ve got a little bitty rearview mirror. And the reason the windshield is so large and the rearview mirror is so small is because what’s happened in your past is not near as important as what’s in your future. Joel Osteen

“...I am so happy with my new windows...I’d like to commend your work crew. Earbie and Larry were fantastic! I couldn’t believe the clean-up EVERYDAY! The whole job took just a week even with all the rain delays. I would and WILL highly recommend your company to my friends and neighbors. Of course I won’t need to say a word – the house is doing all the talking! Thank you so much for my beautiful new house.”
