AUGUST 4, DESERT CHAMPIONSHIPS, 3 DAM(n) COURSE, 5.5 MILE.Originally considered to be 5.5, turns out the course is about 5.9 miles.

The Race Director writes: “Weather was perfect, dry, not too hot and with a slight breeze. No flags were pulled out (!). Tom (Ela) checked the course for flags ahead of time on his bike, and & he and Conrad picked them up. I finally figured out the “correct” mileage “scientifically” by counting foot-steps and measuring the last section from the far NE corner by car-odometer: 3040 (left foot) steps for 2.7 miles (the last section) plus 3680 steps for the first section, ergo 3.2 miles for a total of 5.9 miles. MMS Directors meeting --> July 24: Surprise, surprise, yet AGAIN we discussed running-related matters, mostly. Turkey Flats had FIFTY runners, and only 3 got lost. “But we got ‘em all back … eventually.” MacKennea Broyles set a new course (w)record – 1:17. The former women’s fastest was 1:20 by Cynthia Malleck. COPMOBA asked for fund$ to help with planning, etc. for the proposed Palisade Plunge – and MMS donated $50. The (inevitable) question was asked, and the answer is NO –> foot traffic (and horses, and motorcycles) are strongly discouraged. If enough funds are raised, Ruby Canyon Cycles (with RockSlide Brewery helping some) will match $5000.

We decided we (MMS) would help (sag-wagons, etc.) with the Tour of The Moon (Sept. 29) but not the Tour of the Vineyards. Even though the ToTM has a different operator/facilitator, they still want MMS to assist. IF YOU GET THIS NEWSLETTER IN TIME – PLEASE CONSIDER BEING PART OF THE M.M.S. SAG-WAGON/BIKE-TOUR ASSISTANCE CREW. Contact any Director for details.

Goodbye and good-luck to JULIE MALINGOWSKI (former resident meteorologist), who will be a resident meteorologist elsewhere. Enjoyed your company, please drop in and run with us when you’re passing through !

By now you all have heard about the latest “new Marathon World Record.” Yes, at a sizzling 4:38 pace per mile, ELIUD KIPCHOGE (Kenya, of course) sprinted thru’ the September 16 Berlin Marathon in 2:01:39, which lowered the previous world’s fastest by 78 seconds. Mr. Kipchoge is 33 years-young, 5’6”, 115 pounds – and ran the last 10 miles solo. He ran negative splits – cruising through the half-M in 61:06, then a half-minute faster for the 2nd half.

Sept. 29: annual bicycle Tour of the Moon. MMS is the sag-wagon/rider’s assistance crew – and our/your running club stands to benefit fiduciarily (last year was more than $750 !) – as the Tour sponsors will make a donation to us. Contact any Director (but Tom Ela knows all the details. I think) for particulars. In fact, Mr. Ela writes: Their donation to the Striders for providing crew is a valuable piece of our yearly fundraising. We just need drivers with a vehicle that can carry 2 or more bikes. If willing, respond to this or text Tom at 970-773-3124. Thanks!

Sept. 29, Saturday: an email from EMMA COBURN! I started Emma Coburn’s Elk Run 5k last year in my hometown, Crested Butte, Colorado. It’s a 5k road race that benefits a local cancer support charity, Living Journeys. We capped the race at 500 people and sold out. The day is super fun, live music, food, drinks, and we raise money for the charity. Last year, we raised $19,000. This year, we want to expand the field to 1000 and raise $30,000. The date is September 29th and the race starts at 10am. I wanted to see if your club had interest in racing. The registration fee is usually $35 but we can give $10 off discount to you and your club members that want to race. Let me know if you’re interested. Club members can register online at ElkRun5k.com <http://elkrun5k.com/> and use promo code RUNCLUB.

came in at 23:07 (Kevin) and 28:20 (Margaret). Those times are HOURS and Minutes. 2nd man was Jeremy Bradford (40, Denver) in 24:05; and 2nd woman was Grace Erba (Indiana) in 30:28. Grace is un-usual in that ultra runners are usually much older than 18!

50: JAMES (“I love running”) ROCHE (age 31) enjoyed the Mesa for 8 hours, 9 minutes and 5 seconds to pace the field. Not too far back was Ryan VanNess (42, from Steamboat) in 8:26:44. Fastest woman was LeeAnn Evans (36, Glenwood) with 10 hours and 39 minutes of effort. She was chased by Amy Hillers (29, Lakewood) with a 10:56:05. These two were 8th and 10th over-all in a field of 41. Notable ‘local’ finishers were Austin Anderson (23) in 12th place, 11:08:03. In 16th was MMS-Madame-President Kara Nephew (38) with 11:29:03 – she was 6th female. Right behind in 18th was Greg Hewitt (62 – first over 50) – 11:32:32. Edmond Paspali (48) was 30th, 12:28:49. Also finishing the half-century trail run were Penny Vercelline and Jil Echols.

55k: Caleb Palmer (34, Littleton) paced the field in 5:21:43, 20-minutes ahead of runner-up DONNIE TIETSEMA (33) in 5:42:35. First woman was Jacqueline Parson (33, Home-Town-Not-Given) with a 6:46:41 time. Heather O’Donnell (26, Laramie) was ladie’s runner-up in 7:06:42. 50-years-young Sean Cotter (G.J.) was 14th in 7:32:54. Alas, he did not win the age group! Kyle Stone was 16th (also 50) in 7:41:48. ROCHELLE KRIEGSHAUSER (at age 51, was first woman over 40) in 8:16:58. Jacob McDaniel (29) was 26th finisher of 45 total, with 8:55:38. Scott Jones also completed this event.

30k: there were 67 finishers in the 18+-mile trail experience. KEVIN KOCH (43) was first – 2:37:24, a FIVE-SECOND MARGIN over Ryan Sullivan (28). Giff Walters (32) was 4th, 2:54:00. In 5th over-all was women’s winner Kristen Arendt (29, Niwot), 2:55:02. The second woman was Amanda Scott (30, Boulder), 3:00:48 – and was 6th over-all. 4th woman (& 8th over-all) was Michelle Oberndorf (25), 3:13:54. Alexia Russell was 5th lady, 10th-over-all with 3:22:46. The first runner over-50 was 66-years-young Ernie Langelier, 14th over-all in 3:32:38. Other ‘local’ efforts: 17. Emily Godfrey, 3:49:37 (6th female); 18. Melissa Kelley, 3:51:11; 26. Kellie Jackson (47), 4:23:14; 31. Susan Bierman, 4:30:42; 32. Kelli Kessell, 4:35:27. Also completing the race were Brian Kretschman, Emma-Leigh Larsen, Lara Schneider, Nicole Sturrock, Randee Bergen, and Corey Hinman. See www.grandmesaultras.com

August 11, Sat. Mt. Sneffels Marathon -- & HALF.AS the times will show, the half is fa-a-ast, dropping from Ouray down to Ridgway, while the full-

Monty goes from the finish UP to Ouray, then back.63 runners completed the Marathon, with the fastest times of 2:41:41 and 3:25:46 belonging to

Mario Maclas (Alamosa, in 30-39 a.g.) and Jenny Valentine (Colo. Spgs, also 30-39). Mario was most-closely chased by Anthony Kunkel (Durango, 20-something) in 2:47:30. Sarah Hudelson (Salida, 40-49) was 2nd woman, 3:58:08. Master men’s fastest was Luke Metzger (Montrose) with 3:08:30. 7th-place Bryan Baroffio was fastest over 50 (and is a bit older than that) with a 3:35:19. In 24th place was Craig Henderson (Fruita), who had 4:36:20 of fun.

Downhill courses are quite popular, as there were 450 finishers in the HALF-MARATHON. Some (most?) of the times showed the down-hill-ness, to wit: 1:06:37 for men’s winner Wilson Kibogo (C. Spgs, age 25-29) – 9 seconds ahead of 2nd-place Kiya Dandena (also 25-29, Flagstaff); and women’s winner Ivy Kibet (age 25-29, Colo. Spgs) with 1:14:49 – 23 seconds faster than Elvin Kibet (also 25-29, also from the Springs). Twins? Sisters in same age group? Probably. 12th over-all was Kevin Koch, 1:21:45, who DID NOT win Master’s – he was 3rd. MacKennea and Levi Broyles were 23rd and 24th – 1:29:26. Tanner Stelmach was 2nd in the 19&under a.g. – 1:31:41 (& 25th over-all). Austin Stelmach was 26th place (20-24 a.g.) with 1:32:21. Other GrandValley runner notes: 37. Kirk Hallam, 1:38:01; 49. Nick Mosely, 1:43:32; 59. Madelyn Zander, 1:46:25; 61. Sam Marutzky, 1:46:55 (3rd in 60-64 a.g.); 69. Chuck Mattson, 1:48:13 (4th in 60-64 a.g.); 77. Jennifer Sewall, 1:49:2; 78. Heidi Sande, 1:49:43; 93. Rebecca Hittle, 1:52:32 (from Molina, runs for PVHS); 99. Rochelle Kreigshauser, 1:53:12 (3rd in age group). The Editor apologizes, but only noted ‘locals’ in the first 100 in this race. And yes, I probably missed more than just a couple.

Aug. 18, JUST PEACHY Races – part of Palisade Peach Festival –Timing and management by MadRacingColorado – about 130 runners participated in

the 5k and 10k events this year. The history of a race associated with the Peach Festival has been sporadic – we hope we will now have some continuity.

The 10k had 32 finishers, with Shawn Linborn (in 20-29 a.g.) running a fine 33:27 to pace this. He was followed by age-group phenom Martin Wiesiolek (37:55), who not only won the 50+ age-group, was fastest master. Third was teen-ager Adam Crowl (38:12), 4th was Kirk Hallam (won the 30-39 a.g.) – 38:31 and in 5th was the 2nd “master”, 60-years-young Bryan Baroffio (42:10). Stefanie von Flue was lady’s fastest (42:00, 5th over-all), and in the 30-39 age-group. She was followed by Stephanie Evangelisti (44:36), also in the 30’s a.g. Next woman was master’s winner Rhonda Jones (44:53), and in 4th was Jessica Bela (45:50) and 5th was fellow 30-39 category runner Vicky Bray (47:59). First woman over 50 was Sherry Padon with 49:42.

The 5k had 3 times the entrants, won by Mandy Moran (21:19) and Carl Arnold (16:03) – not bad times! Mandy was followed by Makayla Moran (21:39) and 2nd man was Brevin Currier (18:24). Alex Nelson (22:30), Tyler Faith Shepherd (22:49), and Kelsi Antonelli (24:53) were 3rd-thru’-5th women over-all. Robin Segura Broughton (25:08) was the women’s Master’s winner.

Lyle Vann was 3rd runner to the finish (20:00), ahead of men’s Master’s fastest Kii Hursey (20:45). 5th man (pacing Mandy?) was Nathan Cottrell (21:19).

August 25, Sat., MARY’S LOOP (&) KOKOPELLI CLASSIC TRAIL RUNSAttendance was just a little off from last year – but about 50 runners showed up, of

whom 12 ran the long (Kokopelli, 16-mile) and there were 36 finishing the shorter (8-mile) Mary’s Loop.

GIFF WALTERS (age 33) and LEXI RUSSELL (27) won the longer race, with 2:03:07 and 2:24:26 respectively. Steve Green (age 56!) was men’s runner-up, 2:31:18, while Michelle Oberndorf (26) was less than a minute behind Lexi (2:25:19). Lexi and Michelle were 2nd and 3rd over-all in this race. 3rd places went to Kristi Siman (38), 2:54:30 and Craig Henderson (49), 3:13:35.

STEFANIE VON FLUE (35) and KIRK HALLAM (34) were the 8-mile winners, with 1:10:14 and 1:07:59 respectively. The next three women were Stacie Schreiner (38) – 1:17:52; Rhonda Jones (44, master’s winner) – 1:19:03; Mary Pappas (51) – 1:19:47. 2nd thru’ 4th men were Bryan Baroffio (60, winning men’s masters)) – 1:09:50; Kirk Blais (36) – 1:10:10; and Ernie Langelier (66) – 1:13:54. Dennis and Mary Young (both 75) came in at 2:15:01.

Did the Sept. 1, Sat., SPUR-OF-THE-MOMENT 5K start/finish @ Jr. Legion Park, occur?

Those of us who’ve been running/racing locally since the 1900’s (some of you may not remember the 1900’s) had a steady diet of low-key, camaraderie-implicit events such as this. (Sigh). Now, with so-called “adventure” events, year-round ultras in the desert, resort-town half-marathons, etc., we may have less-and-less inexpensive (no finisher medals for everyone) events as time passes. If we continue to hold this event, consider that this is a “good solid” 5k course to see what your 5k fitness and possible (non-downhill) PR could be ~

over Imogene Pass (13k+ elev.)Of our numerous local contestants, “we” had several age-group medalists, of which

ERNIE LANGELIER won his group. Ernie (just 66, the kid) was 315th of more than 1,200 finishers, winning his age group with a 3:50:00 time. If you count Heath Hibbard (age 65) as “us” – he had 3:16:44 of fun and won the “senior” division ! And, also winning their age group from Grand Junction was JAMES GEBHARD (60) – finishing 1st in the 60-64, placing 209th in 3:36:16. Finishing 3rd in the 60-64 was George Salazar (4:09:17). Grand Valley runners accounted for two more 3rd-place a.g. places – Jeanie Grooms (62) with a 4:56:29 and Martin Wiesiolek (52), 77th over-all in 3:11:06. Alexia Russell (27) was 4th in her a.g., 164th over-all, 3:29:12.

Finishing closer to the front, KEVIN KOCH was 16th over-all (of over 1200 finishers), and was 3rd in the master’s age group? His time was 2:40:48.

The over-all race winners were Dakota Jones (age 27 from T’ride), 2:13:35 – followed by Daniel Nally about 9 minutes later. Lady’s fastest was Maggie Yount (34, Durango) with a 2:53:23 time. Next woman was Ashley Christopher (23, from Flagstaff) – 2:55:27.

There were a possible few dozen Grand Valley survivors – of whom the Editor noted were: 44th woman – Shea Chubbick, 3:37:23; #229, David Bobka, 3:38:28; #267 Michael Charnick, 3:43:19; and yes, if the Editor pursued the results further – there were, admirably, many more local runners capable of negotiating this difficult yet sublime undertaking.www.imogenerun.com

On Sept. 8 and 9 were held the “Desert’s Edge Tri Festival” Triathlons at Highline Lake. These also were timed/managed by www.madracingcolorado.com. The XTERRA (mountain-bikes) event was Saturday (9/8) while the other two were on Sunday. Sunday featuted the road-bike-optioned Sprint and Olympic distances.

Okay, your editor would have made more of an effort to report WHO won these, etc., etc. but the results are (were?) presented in about 30 or more separate categories! The “elite” entrant fields were but 2 competitors each – but how does one easily determine the over-all results among (elite/open, clyde, Athena, 1st-timer, relays, etc.). So, hopefully if YOU were there, give us a story!

3rd annual Striders Trail Race Series

The third race in the series was a hot one!  Twenty runners battled it out for all the glory (or an extra hot dog at the picnic.  Michelle O kept her streak alive coming in first for the women with a time of 45:03 and James "Two Hat" R came in first for the men with a time of 37:35.  Then, race #4 on Monday, August 13 - Flume Canyon (Pollock Bench Trail head) -- A smaller than normal turn-out did not hinder the fierce competition at Monday night's trail run #4 at Flume Canyon.  The men's winner was Jeason Murphy with a smoking time of 35:16 and going for a clean sweep was the female winner Michelle Oberndorf with a time of 43:07. Leading the points series are Kevin Donoher and Michelle Oberndorf.  Each participant’s appearance (and place among either the men or the women) in each event entitles them to “tickets” – to be used for the end-of-season raffle. E.g., race winners get 4 tickets for their effort, but every participant has a chance to win something among all the goodies.

Finally! Monday, September 17 - Pollock Bench Trail - raffle follows the race. The 2018 trail run series finale was held at Pollock Bench, followed by a raffle and BBQ.  Who would have thought the last race would still see temperatures in the 90's!  Twenty-three runners toed the line, with Jeason Murphy and Erin Walter winning the male and female 1st place.  Top three male overall points winners were: Kevin Donoher (94 points), Donnie Tiestsma (87 points) and Michael Charnick (76 points) and top three female overall points winner were: Michelle Oberndorf (99 points!), Lexi Russell (75 points) and Laura Venner (71 points).

The following chart/spreadsheets show each entrant’s accumulation of points, and, hence, tickets. “P/T” = Points/Tickets.
