    Continued overleaf…..

Does nature really make you feel better?

I try to walk my dogs most mornings before I start work. It’s definitely harder to head outdoors on the cold

and frosty mornings but my days go far more smoothly when I have started my day outdoors. I feel better

and my thinking is clearer. More and more research is supporting the benefits of taking time out to enjoy

nature and slow down our days.

Nature has been shown to be both restorative, for those recovering/suffering from mental illness and

protective for general mental health. * For example:

Exposure to nature has been shown to evoke positive emotions, as well as strengthen individual

    resilience and coping skills.

Getting into nature has been shown to have positive impacts on concentration, learning, problem

solving, critical thinking capacity, and creativity as well as enhance mental health and wellbeing

through encouraging physical fitness and social engagement.

As our Bush School experiences come to a close for 2019, teachers and adults who have been part of the

program have reported some remarkable observations and changes over the past two terms.

    Teachers report that the children

    have built their stamina to walk for longer;

    enjoy a range of conversations during the walk to and from Bushland Park;

    of all ages interact and play in mixed groups;

    guide their own play and investigations;

    look forward to re-visiting special places they have created;

    play peacefully and include others;

    are quieter and less boisterous with their play choices;

enjoy the calming experience Bush School provides.

If you don’t believe us, here’s some feedback from the children themselves-

Tyler Class 2 “ I like making my Bush School house and I get to play and paint on the trees with lake mud.

    I like eating here.”

Shyla Class 3 “ I learn about animals and nature. I enjoy the nature play area. I like the bouncy log.”

Sam Class 3 “ I learn about the plants and orchids. I like building cubbies and playing near the lake.”

  • Living in the Hills, we are surrounded by many beautiful parks and places where we can walk and play. Now the weather is warming, consider planning a

family outing to a conservation park or pathway. Walking and playing together in nature is a great way to connect, have fun and feel great.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

    Dear Families/Carers

We are pleased to announce a fantastic partnership between Lobethal Primary School and St John SA to teach our students how to apply

first aid. The First Aid in Schools Program is a community initiative delivered by qualified trainers from St John SA. The aim is to equip

children with the first aid skills they need if faced with a medical emergency. The course is fun and informative with hands-on techniques

    and demonstrations.

After participating in the program, each student will receive a certificate of achievement and will be provided with educational resources

to be used at home or in the classroom. The First Aid in Schools Program is age-appropriate and integrates with the National Curriculum.

The program is also delivered with the support of the South Australian Department for Education and Child Development.

St John SA is a charitable organisation. To ensure the First Aid in Schools program is sustainable they have created an online

crowdfunding platform for parents, friends and the community to help fundraise to cover the cost of each classroom taught first aid

    https://firstaidinschools.org.au/.

Alternatively, to teach your child’s class first aid we are asking for a gold coin on the day.

All funds raised go directly to cover the cost of teaching your child’s class first aid. If you have further questions, simply contact us on the

    details provided below.

    Class dates: 9/9th – Class 2, 6

    10/9th – Class 3,4,7

    Kind regards

Bush school has given us the opportunity to observe the regeneration of

the bush after the burn off, to check water quality in the dam, to find

signs of changes in seasons, and most importantly to develop our oral

language and social skills. Thanks to all who helped us provide this

amazing opportunity. Bush School has informed our learning strongly for

    the last 2 terms.

We had Kathy Palmer join us for Maths this term. We have been

    developing our number work.

I like the muddy lake play because you

can splash in it. I like it being flooded.

    By Kaylee

Getting muddy is probably the best part

of it. When you go to Bush School you can

    get covered in MUD!

    By Sam

I like the walking because it’s good

exercise and nature play because I get to

    sharpen sticks with rocks.

    By Jensen

    I like playing

    with the mud in

    the nature play

    space.

    By Maya

I love it when Ben and

    Hudson come to play

    at the cubby.

    By Nate

I love the play at the

    end of the day

    because we get to do

    whatever we want

    and it’s fun.

    By Amaya

I love that we get to play in nature. You

get to find out more about nature, like

    the names of birds.

    By Annabelle

I love that it rains and you get to eat

it. There’s frogs when it rains and

there’s more mud in the dam and you

get to splash in it. And when you get

there you get to play with your friends

and it’s so fun and even when we’re

walking there it’s fun cause we can

    play.

Literacy Learning in Team 4 During Literacy, we have been concentrating on building our vocabulary through a variety of reading comprehension strategies and different learning activities.

Through shared book experiences, guided reading sessions, writing book reports, and plenty of other literacy and reading comprehension activities, Team 4 have been constructing and building up their word knowledge.

Our Space Theme this term, provided the perfect context for rich language opportunities through our investigations with using non-fiction reading material.

Daily writing sessions, including Recounts, Template Tuesday’s and Wondering Wednesday’s, Journal Writing have focussed on building up stamina to write for extended periods, improving our imagination and using creativity to expand our written ideas.

  • Kevin’s 7

Kevin’s 7 have been working on their writing skills. For this particular task we voted on a topic (mythical creatures), wrote 2

sentences, received peer feedback then responded to the improvements suggested to them. This is their end result.

Right in front of me was a silver, shining unicorn with a gleaming mane, it was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen!

    Ella M

I went to get dressed, there was a horse type thing in my closet and it scared me so much I ran down the street. Hannah

The dragon emerged, it looked like gold, it shot out molten lava. Axel

The dragon hit me so my Phoenix bit the dragon, but in doing so was hit by the dragon’s tail. Noah

My next door neighbor’s house was on fire because a dragon breathed on it. Lukas V

“No one’s left behind, all this torture will unwind, take it from a broken crime, we have no place to go,” these words rang in my

head, my encounter with the ghost is one I will never forget. Alice

The dragon breathed fire at me causing severe burns, the dragon still lurks the caves waiting for its next victim. Luella

Once I was standing by a river and all of a sudden a bunyip jumped out of the river and gobbled me up. Arden

I read a story about mythical creatures, I absolutely loved it, my favourite was the unicorn. Gus

The second I saw it out of the water it was dark green with moldy teeth, sharp too with light red eyes like blood. Oliver

Unicorns are very beautiful intelligent creatures. Rikki-May

One day I saw a dog-horse thing, it appeared in my house and it was scary. Abbey

Bang, the unicorn hit me with powerful magic then it ran back into the forest. William

I was riding on the unicorn’s back when suddenly the unicorn stopped and I got flung into the lake! Crystal

Tom was in his boat, he was in a middle of a storm then he heard lovely singing and then the siren leaped up and pulled him in!

    Liv

A dragon blew fire on my house and the house blew up instantly. Oscar

I had a horse that was faster than a cheetah, when I was riding my horse, it’s head disappeared, it changed into a human head,

it was a centaur. Ella F

I see a horse like thing near the lake and think, “should I run,” the answer was yes, I’ve seen a Kelpie. Ivy

Splash, Ariel the mermaid jumped in the lake and joined her friends. Madeline

Once in a forest far far away there was a place that nobody goes. Marley

A dragon blew fire on my hand and it started to melt. Louis

Bonnie the unicorn played with friends near the river and played 7 games of hide and seek. Brooke

Splash, someone got pulled into the water, the bunyip had claimed another victim. Eddie

One day I woke up and there was a dragon, unfortunately it burnt my house down. Toby

  • Class 5 have discovered how to construct simple budgets using a trip to the Royal Adelaide Show as a base.

Students found out how hard it can be to keep to a budget. Using prices from the Show, students started with

an amount and some did have to increase their budget. Using skills in money and subtraction, students were

able to track their balance using a table, and then see how much they had left at the end.

Then using some of our (somewhat realistic) money, the students experienced spending and receiving change.

They then had to become the business person and take the cash, giving the correct change. In the end the

students could see if they had the correct amount by checking the leftover

    cash against their budget.

Harper, “I learned how important a budget can be”

“I am better at handling money”

“Buy your tickets before you go”

    “It was the funnest activity”

“It’s hard ending up with the amount you thought you would end up with”

Corey, “If you go to the show you need to budget”

PERSONAL PROJECTS… A big thank you to the parents helping their children with the personal projects. These

projects allow students to delve further into a passion and learn new skills. Along the way, students are learning to

create their own Rubrics, ask smart open questions, set achievable goals and sell their passion to others. We have

students learning how to make a dress, how to choose a good horse to buy, how farmers keep their orchards

productive, how to maintain and keep bikes safe, how Surf Lifesaving works, how to properly groom a horse, how to

cook a good chicken schnitzel and many, many more!

  • Class 6

How Mean Are You? Class 6 studies statistics and probability to find out!

“We had to find the mean, median and mode of different parts of our body. We then compared ourselves to others to see the average.” Andrew

“When I feel confident to show and share my learning, it reflects in my grade.” Emily

“The chance of a coin landing on heads or tails is 50% or a 5 in10 chance.” Max

“We learnt about tree diagrams and how to take the data and put it onto a probability line.” Gabe

“I can show you how to work out mean, median, mode and range. You will see this is my future learning” Isaac

“ We are learning this so we can use it in the future.” Ned

“I’ve learnt how to figure out the mean, median, mode and range and how to display data on a stem and leaf

    plot.” Oscar

“Collecting and analyzing data will help me in the real world when I am doing things like shopping.” Cameron

“Finding the mean, median and mode helps with analyzing data.” Dan

“ We compared the average weather of Nepabunna and Lobethal.” Maddy

“ I am learning this to further my knowledge on mean, median, mode and range. It is important to learn this as it will help me when I am using money,

working mathematically and certain jobs.” Sophia

“ We are learning to identify the mean, median, mode and range.” Ashton

“We are learning this to see what is fair and what chance something has versus something else.” Rylie S

    “Chance has no memory.” Aiden

“ When I can teach others how to work out mean, median and mode.” Chloe

“I have become more fluent and require less help when finding the mean, median and mode.” Riley Mc

“ Understand the importance of showing all my working out in range, mean, median and mode.” Ari

“ I already know how to find mode, I need to learn how to find the mean and median.” Grace

“When I get feedback, it gives me opportunities to improve. I am also able to share my knowledge with

    others.” Jack

“ I am learning this so I can get a big brain and also for statistics in the real world.” Lachie

“ When I can recall how to fluently work out mean, median and mode, I will be more independent and confident.” Lincon

“ We mainly looked at mean. This is where you add all the numbers together and divide it by how many

    numbers there were.” Robert

“ By learning mean, median and mode we are able to show the information in a simpler way so it can be

    understood better.” Maxwel

“Once I have learnt how to find the mean, median and mode, I can use it in other learning.” Sharni
