Term 2 is sure shaping up to be an exciting and busy one already! Staffing update We are welcoming back Jane Davies this term after first term on leave. Jane will be working Thursdays and Fridays for the first four weeks and gradually increase her time over the course of term 2. Welcome back Jane! Paul Taylor is on sick leave for at least the first 2 weeks of this term and Jon Osborne is on leadership for this time. Bec Martin will be working 0.4 this term on Wednesdays in LA1-5 and Fridays in LA2-2. New classrooms It was with great excitement after over 18 months of negotiations and planning, that four classes, two year 3 and two year 4, were able to move into Learning Area 4 on Tuesday! The area was well worth the wait with the classrooms spacious (and the only ones in the school to have wet areas!) and the outdoor area really attractive with gardens, paving and new plantings. I would like to acknowledge the time, effort and commitment that the educators Annette, Vic, Shana and Ivan have contributed in setting up their new learning environments for the start of the term. The move into these classrooms now means that Performing Arts can move back into the PA Room in LA1, which Steph Hammond is thrilled about! During the holidays we have had LA1-11 painted and the carpets cleaned, with Science being moved in here, and this week LA1-10 is being painted and the carpets cleaned meaning that French will move in here from week 2. So there is a lot happening! Pupil Free Day (PFD) On Monday teachers from our partnership schools continued our learning around the department’s Learning Design Assessment and Moderation (LDAM) strategy. The focus of the day was around the importance of children understanding the intention for their learning by being able to understand and articulate what they are learning and why they are learning it. Teachers make this explicit to children through establishing and communicating clear learning intentions in line with the Australian Curriculum and by establishing ‘success criteria’ which supports children in understanding how they will know when they have learned it. When you pick your child up from school and ask them about their day, consider saying “Tell me one thing that you learned today” rather than “Tell me one thing you did” as this helps children focus on the learning from an activity/task/assignment rather than the actual task - this is actually quite different and requires much more reflective thinking. Listen for their answer and then ask “Why do you think it is important to learn about that?” At first your child may struggle with these questions, but with more exposure and given time to respond to these types of questions that make them think, the more reflective and confident they will become. We also continued our learning about assessment, in particular: Formative assessment - this is assessment that occurs during instruction in collaboration with students and is designed to elicit evidence of learning and gain actionable feedback that is used to adjust teaching and learning Summative assessment - focuses on assessment at the end of a unit of learning/program/assignment Formative assessment is a powerful tool that teachers use continually to find out what children know throughout the learning process so that feedback can be given and the teaching and learning adjusted and adapted its not waiting to check in with children at the end when it is too late! We congratulate Charlie Jarman, Jon Osborne and Vic Edwards who all shared their formative assessment strategies and practices with their partnership colleagues at the PFD on Monday. Time was then provided in the afternoon for school based teaching teams to work collaboratively to ensure learning intentions, success criteria and formative assessment strategies are integrated into their teaching and learning programs. It was a valuable and productive day of learning. Have a wonderful week. Leanne 2019 Pupil Free Days Friday 7 June Friday 30 August School Closure Monday 2 September Newsletter

Dear Families,

I trust that you all had a wonderful holiday and are looking forward to continuing to support your child’s learning journey this term. Term 2 is sure shaping up to be an exciting and busy one already!

Assistant Principal Update Phonological Awareness Parent Workshop During the last week of term 1 our speech pathologist Kathryn Anderson ran a parent workshop around phonological awareness.

Phonological awareness is the ability to hear and identify and say the separate parts of words such as rhymes, and letter sounds. Phonological awareness has been shown in numerous studies to be one of the best predictors of initial reading progress.

“Phonological awareness refers to the ability to detect and analyse the sound structure of spoken language. Children who have phonological awareness can:

Blend and segment syllables

Recognise and produce rhyme

Recognise and isolate initial and final sounds

Blend, segment and manipulate sounds

Activities you can do at home to help children develop their understanding of syllables…...

Segmenting syllables

Clap out syllables for family members names.

Take a step for each syllable in words e.g. el-e-phant (take 3 steps).

Sort pictures of words into 1 beat, 2 beats and 3 beats.

Use counters or blocks to count out syllables in words.

Decide whether words are long or short, depending on the number of syllables.

Jump on stepping stones for each syllable in a word.

Pull objects out of a feely bag and clap the syllables e.g. pen – cil.

Please email [email protected] if you would like a copy of the powerpoint presentation.

NAPLAN online 2019 NAPLAN test window: 14 - 24 May

In 2019, all children at Paringa Park Primary school in years 3,5 and 7 will sit the NAPLAN online tests.

However, children in some other schools across Australia will sit the NAPLAN paper tests this year. Federal, state and territory education ministers have agreed that all schools will move online by 2020. State and territory education authorities will determine when their schools move online. As students are assessed on the same literacy and numeracy curriculum content, regardless of whether they complete the test online or on paper, results for both formats can be reported on the same NAPLAN assessment scale.

ANZAC Day Dawn Service Congratulations to Coco, Naomi and Ella for representing Paringa Park Primary with grace and respect by presenting a wreath provided by the Brighton RSL at the ANZAC Day service at the Arch of Remembrance at Brighton.

Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that broadly commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders "who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations" and "the contribution and suffering of all those who have served".

Thank you once again to Coco, Naomi & Ella.

2019 Public Education Awards

Parents and community members are encouraged to nominate, celebrate and recognise an outstanding educator in the 2019 Public Education Awards. Get involved and say thank you to a principal, teacher or support staff member making a significant difference to the lives of their students and their communities.

An educator’s influence continues beyond the classroom and supports children and young people to reach their full potential in life. We all remember a teacher who inspired and motivated us to enjoy learning, and the awards honour the dedication and passion of individuals who deliver the best possible outcomes for young people and their families.

The Public Education Awards are entering their 9th year and we’re excited to share excellence in South Australian public education and invite you to celebrate and recognise an educator who makes a positive impact every day.

The Public Education Awards recognise excellence in South Australian public education, and nominations are open 1 to 31 May. Visit www.education.sa.gov.au/awards to nominate and find out more about the awards. Nomination forms can also be completed at the front office.

Important Health Information As we head into cooler weather, we would like to remind families of the importance of keeping children home from school if they are unwell. Colds and flu spread very easily in a school environment and one child with a cough and runny nose can quickly infect a whole class. We have already had several confirmed cases of Influenza A this term - further information was emailed to families earlier this week. If you have any concerns that your child is unwell we encourage you to keep them home and seek medical advice.

Spoons & Forks In an effort to reduce waste, the canteen will no longer be supplying free plastic cutlery. We encourage children to bring their own cutlery from home otherwise single use, biodegradable cutlery can be purchased with your lunch order.

Volunteer Morning Tea National Volunteer Week starts on Monday 20 May. The children and staff at Paringa Park Primary School would like to give a special thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers by hosting a morning tea at 10am on Friday 24 May in the staff room. Invitations were emailed to families earlier this week, but please share with grandparents or other volunteers who may not have received our email. Without you, we wouldn’t be able to offer our children so many opportunities. We look forward to sharing this time with you.

Future Enrolments To assist us with our planning we seek information from you regarding siblings who you would like to be placed on our enrolment register for 2020, including reception children. Please collect an Enrolment Register Application form from the front office.

Excerpt from our Outdoor Learning Policy Objectives Our school is committed to providing opportunities for children to engage in open-ended, diverse and meaningful learning experiences that are connected to natures, while also being connected to curriculum. This includes the Australian Curriculum general capabilities particularly critical and creative thinking, personal and social capability, ethical understanding and intercultural understanding. The possibilities for learning outdoors are diverse. The Australian Curriculum Framework places outdoor learning as one of the key curriculum connections to support and guide educators’ practice. “The outdoor learning connection provides a framework for students to experience guided, integrated learning across the curriculum in natural environments. Students have the opportunity to gain unique and specific benefits from outdoor learning. They develop skills and understandings while valuing a positive relationship with natural environments and promoting the sustainable use of these environments” (ACARA, V8.3)

Outdoor learning and play also promotes development of literacy and numeracy, physical health and wellbeing, helps develop an appreciation of the environment. Playing and learning in nature builds opportunities for powerful learning. Professor Guy Claxton, talks about powerful learning as mind stretching, a disposition that can be learned and fostered. His vocabulary describes the wondering, engaging, explaining, experimenting, imagining, reasoning, collaborating and reflecting – all positive attributes that children utilise when engaged in outdoor play and learning. Nature based playgrounds can work effectively to build powerful learning opportunities for children and promote a growth mindset through the provision of risk, challenge, engagement and process-based play.

Research – Outdoor play in winter There are sometimes concerns from parents about play outside during cold, wintry weather. Requests to keep children indoors can be a source of dilemma for educators. Research shows that there are a number of physical and developmental benefits children receive from spending time outdoors. These include:

children exploring their creativity at multiple levels of development

children being involved in vigorous physical activity which has numerous health benefits and is strongly recommended by health professionals

addressing the issue of childhood obesity

improvements in recovery from injuries

increases to children’s levels of happiness

reductions in the occurrence of illness

improvement in skills such as categorisation, classification, and learning through observation, interpretation, inference and prediction

increased confidence, self-esteem, independence and reduced stress

gaining an awareness of self and others and a greater sense of what they can control by playing outdoors

increased understanding of safe risk taking

understanding of what it means to be ‘sustainable’

building responsibility to care for the environment

Being outdoors in wintry weather Research demonstrates that nature plays an important role in children developing relationships with outdoor elements such as: appreciation of natural processes (including weather, seasons, changes/transitions); interrelationships between organisms; care for living things (including insects, plants); and the concept that learning itself is enhanced by experiences in the natural world. This construct spans the range of topics from Eco literacy (or environmental literacy) to concepts of systems knowledge and theories of sustainability.

Adults often believe that stopping children playing outdoors during cold wintry days will safeguard them from catching coughs and colds. Professor Raina MacIntrye, (Professor of Infectious Diseases Epidemiology and Head of the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of New South Wales) suggests that, ‘exposure to cold weather will not give you a cold because colds are caused by viruses. There is an association between cold weather and the winter season, and common colds because transmission of cold viruses is much higher in cold weather. It’s likely that colds and influenza outbreaks peak in winter because we tend to huddle together in small, often stuffy, unventilated spaces. It’s also unlikely that exposure to cold weather will exacerbate the symptoms of a cold’.

All weather Children will be encouraged to wear appropriate clothing in order to venture outdoor in all weather.
