Edition 82: 14 May 2021

A warm welcome to the new students and their families who have enrolled at our school this term. We are

still getting a few enrolments which is very positive for our school. The weather is getting noticeably cooler at

night and in the early morning as we progress through the last month of Autumn. Please check all your

child’s uniform items and make sure you have them well named. It is quite concerning to see such a huge

amount of lost property building up. As we know uniforms do cost and it is sad to see so many lost uniform

items. Please take the time to check lost property for anything your child may be missing.

NAPLAN

Year 3 and Year 5 students have started NAPLAN for 2021. On Tuesday Year 3 students sat the Writing

component, completing it manually with pencil on paper. It was wonderful to see our Year 3 students happily

attempting the writing task. Year 5 students did their writing component electronically online over 3 grouped

sessions in our Computer lab. Any students who were absent on Tuesday for Writing will have the

opportunity to do a catch up session over the next week. On Wednesday Year 5 students completed the

Reading component online and on Thursday the Language Conventions. On Friday Year 3 completed the

Reading and Language Conventions online. Next week on Monday Year 5 will complete the Numeracy

component and Year 3 will do Numeracy on Tuesday. The rest of next week will be for catching up any

students who missed a session. Congratulations to all our Year 3 and 5 students for your super efforts

during your NAPLAN sessions and to our school community for supporting them through these 2 weeks of

NAPLAN. Taking assessments of any kind is always a little stressful for anyone and it is a time children

especially need a bit of extra care, encouragement and support.

Year 1 enjoyed the Show!

Year 1 children had a wonderful time at the Art House in Wyong. They saw a live show called “Magic

Beach”. This was to tie in with the Science study they were doing on Living Things. Such a wonderful

opportunity and experience to be an audience in a theatre at a live production. Of course they enjoyed the

getting in the big bus and travelling together to Wyong as well. Thank you Year 1 teachers for enabling a

great day out for Year 1.

Special Swim School

Students in our six support classes have been attending a special swim school over the last 2 weeks. It has

been great weather and all of them have enjoyed the experience and have learnt some new water skills. It is

so great to be an inclusive school. Thank you to our dedicated teachers and School Learning Support

Officers for supporting our most vulnerable students to be able to explore and experience new opportunities.

Quality Teaching Rounds

Quality Teaching Rounds (QTR) is a ground-breaking approach to teacher professional development, with

demonstrated impact on quality of teaching, teacher morale and school culture.

It empowers teachers to enrich student learning through a collaborative, teacher-driven framework that

enables participants to analyse and improve their practice. The approach applies across all subjects and

year levels, and builds the confidence and capacity of teachers at all career stages.

Our school was fortunate to be funded $10,000 through the University of Newcastle so we could involve

teachers in Quality Teaching Rounds to track teacher effectiveness through intense support, to student’s

improved learning outcomes. Baseline data has already been gathered and the process of Quality Teaching

Rounds has begun. The one thing that we know from research is that the classroom teacher has the

maximum impact on a child’s learning in their class. It is extremely important that we equip teachers with all

the tools they need to be confident and competent educational providers. A big thank you to Mrs Lisa Mills

for her expertise and work around sourcing out this opportunity for our teachers and coordinating the

program within our school.

Canberra Excursion

The Year 6 Canberra excursion is not far away and organisation is being finalised. This year the Australian

Government has increased the amount of their PACER funding towards student excursions to Canberra as

part of their learning around how Australian democracy works. It will be $30 per student for us being more

than 500 kilometres from Canberra. This is a very welcome supplement for our students and in turn allows

the school to take this $30 off the total amount per student for the Canberra excursion. Every little bit helps

support our students to experience worthwhile and educational experience. The Canberra excursion is from

the 9th June to the 11th June. Year 6 students will have a wonderful time but will need to rug up as it is quite

cold in Canberra at that time of year. Thank you to the Stage 3 teachers for their organisation and giving up

their own family time to support their students on this excursion.

Important Parking Message

We’ve received word of the fact that some parents have been stopping in the middle of Bowden Road to

pick their children up in the afternoon, and that others are performing three point turns at the carpark gates

on Bowden Road. The people who reported these incidences feel that such behaviour is not only

inconsiderate to other parents/motorists, but also places our students at risk should they be exiting the back

of the school or attempting to cross Bowden Road on their way home. We agree with these sentiments, and

would respectfully ask that people take the time to find an appropriate parking spot (easier said than done,

we know). Last year we reported that some parents were parking in the Kiss and Ride Zone on Park Road

for more than the three minutes permissible by law, and that this was causing traffic to bank up, again

placing students at risk as they crossed Park Road. Once again, we would ask that parents consider the

needs of others and the safety of our students, and park in an appropriate space and walk to the gates to

meet their children. We thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework that promotes positive behaviour across

our school. This fortnight teachers have been talking to students about how to ‘Be Safe’ especially during

break times. Lessons have had a focus on remembering to stay in supervised areas, not playing with sticks

on the playground and waiting for turns on the fixed equipment. Next fortnight our PBL lessons will focus on

our ‘Be Co-operative’ rule and our school leaders will be making videos to explain the importance of doing

things the first time. If you have any questions regarding PBL at WWPS please contact Mrs Williams in the

office.

Buddy Classes

This term has seen the start of our Buddy Classes across the school. The goal of the Buddy system is to

teach, and give children the opportunity to practise, the important values of respect, care, valuing difference,

responsibility, friendship and including others. It is hoped that by providing opportunities for our buddies to

meet regularly younger children will feel safe and cared for while older children feel valued and respected.

Wellbeing programs across the school

Student Wellbeing at Woy Woy Public School is embedded into our daily experiences to enable all children

and young people to feel supported and to feel a strong sense of belonging. When young people have a strong

sense of wellbeing, they feel connected to others and they are more likely to develop safe and trusting

relationships. Our Student Wellbeing programs are designed to nurture and support personal development

and provide students with access to opportunities that promote a positive mindsets, independence and

resilience. If you feel that your child would benefit from exploring the wellbeing programs offered P-6 please

Student Wellbeing

We are very excited to be commencing our ‘Zones of Regulation’ program in week 2. The focus of the first

lesson introduces students to the four ‘Zones of Regulation’ (©Social Thinking, 2011). Using images of

various feelings, students learn to identify the four ‘Zones’, which are the foundation of the program.

Students work on increasing their vocabulary of emotions and recognition of facial expressions.

How can you help?

• Use the language and talk about the Zones your child has experienced across the day. You might

like to keep a copy of the Zones somewhere at home which is handy to refer to as your own ‘check

in’ system. A visual of the 4 zones will be sent home to support understanding.

• Help your child gain an awareness of his or her Zone and feelings by pointing out your observations

ie,“I can see you are frustrated, you are in the yellow zone”

• Encourage your child to share his or her Zone with you and help them to become comfortable using

the language to communicate their feelings and ways they can respond accordingly

• Model how you feel - what Zone you would be in and what you will do to regulate your emotions

The year 6 students attending BWSC in 2022 took part in a science taster session on Thursday 6th May in

our school hall. This session introduced the students to what high school science looks like. Students had

the opportunity to design and develop a go cart driven by wind using a balloon. The students then tested

their carts and made any adjustments to improve their model. Finally all go carts were tested to see who’s

performed and travelled the furthest. There will be another taster session in week 5 this term to introduce

student to film.

This term we have been busy bees in the cultural garden. Students have experienced tasting a few native

plants that have flowered and ripened this autumn, from trying Old Man’s Salt Bush to eating the sweet

nectar from the beautiful flowers of a Grevillea tree. We have especially enjoyed the berries, which students

refer to as a natural Warhead due to its sourness!

Thank you to everyone that has brought in bottle caps for a mural

that we are wanting to complete. Students in stage 3 have been

pleasantly surprised at how many we have been able to collect so

quickly!

We won’t be starting this project until Term 3 so we are still

warmly welcoming more donations. We are also on the hunt for

more orange and purple bottle caps as we are low in numbers so

please keep a look out for those.

We are excited to see what we can make and will keep you informed once a design has been chosen!

Over the past two weeks our preschool friends were very busy making a special piece of jewellery for

someone special at home for Mother’s Day. The children selected a range of different coloured polymer clay

and moulded it into a unique shape before flattening it with a rolling tool. After the pendant was baked in the

oven the children then added coloured beads onto the necklace and placed it into a handmade paper bag

package – made with love.

The children also enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea spread with their loved ones and spoiled their Mum's and

Nanny's at the pamper parlour, decorated cupcakes to eat and showed off their gorgeous smiles in the

photo booth.

It was so lovely to be able to invite our families’ onsite for this special occasion and honour the contribution

of mothers, acknowledge the efforts of maternal bonds and the role of mothers (whether it be working mums

or stay-at-home mums) in our society.

With Mrs Arnot, the children also made necklaces for our friends from Deepwater Court Retirement Village.

On Friday, our Pelican group delivered the gifts along with some individual flowers as the residents enjoyed

their Mother’s Day morning tea. A little bit of kindness goes a long way!

Stage 1 Assistant Principal (Relieving)

The support classes have been enjoying swim school for the past two weeks. The students have been

learning many important skills including swimming techniques, water safety, social skills and independent

living skills. We have been very impressed with the effort and perseverance displayed by the students, as

well as their behaviour at the pool and travelling to and from the pool. Everyone is looking forward to going

on the waterslide on Friday as a reward for their great work.

We held our monthly meeting for May last night and big thank you to all those that attended, I hope you got

home safe in that storm.

It was a very productive meeting with lots of discussion about upcoming events and happenings in the P&C

and school.

The Mother’s Day stall was a success with lots of little smiling faces telling us about the wonderful woman in

their life and carefully picking out a present for them. Hopefully all of your presents made you smile and your

Mother’s day was a lovely one. Thank you so much to the volunteers on both days, you made the whole

event run smoothly and successfully. Thank you Hannah, Janet, Tracey, Laura, Jodi, Sarah, Kate, Nicole,

Meg, and our wonderful Fundraising coordinator Gillian.

We are pleased to inform the school community that we were able to make a donation to the school of

a mobile interactive board for the library to be used by all stages to further their learning experiences.

Keep an eye out for that one appearing in the library later this Term.

Expression of interest for event committee – “Walk-a-thon and spring celebration event”

We will be holding a week-long event culminating in a walk-a-thon and family BBQ in Term 3 week 9. This is

joint effort with the Teachers and P&C and we are reaching out to any interested parents or family members

who would like to be involved in the planning committee. The meetings will be approximately two - three a

Term with boots on the ground for the event week. You do not need to be a P&C member to be on the

committee you just need a working with children check verified by the school and the availability and

motivation to make this major fundraiser a success. We are raising funds for a specific improvement/addition

to the school that will benefit all students at WWPS. There will be more details coming in future newsletters.

Crazy Hair and Sock Day

On Friday 28th May there will be a crazy hair and sock day. The crazier the better and I know there are

some wild and wonderful socks out there. Participation will be a gold coin donation and funds raised go

towards upgrades and purchases for the students benefit.

School Banking

School Banking is back!!

School banking day will be Wednesday and is back next week. First day is Wednesday 19th May. Bring

your bank books in and hand them to your teacher. Every deposit earns you a dollarmite coin and 10

coins/deposits of any amount and you can order a reward.

Next P&C Meeting

The next general meeting will be held 7:00pm - 8:30pm, Wednesday 9th June, Staff Room, Woy Woy

Public School. We look forward to seeing familiar faces return and welcoming new families to our

community. All are welcome to attend. We are hoping to have a digital option for participating in our

meetings as that may mean some community members can be a part of it even if they can’t physically be

there. More information will follow regarding that option.

Membership

The annual P&C membership fee is $2.00, and this entitles you to participate in the democratic decision-

making process of the Association. If you are interested, P&C Membership forms for 2020/21 are available

from the school or by emailing wwpspandc@live.com.au

Completed forms and membership fee can be placed in a sealed envelope and put in the P&C blue box in

the school office or better still attend a meeting and find out firsthand what is happening within the school.

Members do not have to attend every meeting; however, your child gets a buzz out of you being involved

with the school. Your input and ideas are valued.

School Banking is back at Woy Woy Public School

Wednesday Mornings

School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for students to learn about money and

develop good savings habits. For each weekly deposit made at school, students will receive a

silver Dollarmites token. Once they collect 10 tokens, they can redeem them for a School Banking

reward.

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school P&C. We receive a Regular Savers

Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student (deposits can start at $0.05c) as

well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one

School Banking deposit in the prior year.

The money raised means the P&C can help subsidise school incursions. So far, it has helped the

annual Anti Bullying program and the upcoming stage 3 environmental program. If your child has

previously participated in School Banking, or has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youth saver

account, they can start banking straight away by bringing their Dollarmites deposit wallet to school

on Wednesday.

If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a

note on Wednesday and we will issue them with a replacement book.

Our School Banking program is made possible because of parent volunteers. Thank you to those

volunteers for donating their time to run School Banking for our students.

Office Hours

School phones are manned from 8:30am until 3:15pm. The office window is opened at 8:30am and closed at

3:00pm however office staff are available until 3:15pm. There is a teacher on duty at the bus lines until 3:20pm.

Changes to Going Home Arrangements

Could you please ensure that your child is aware of how they will be going home in the afternoon.If these

arrangements change during the day it would be appreciated if you could contact the office prior to 2:00pm to

ensure that the message is passed on to your child.

Skoolbag APP and Website

You can download the WWPS Skoolbag APP to both iPhone and Android devices. Event updates and

important information will be sent out via our Skoolbag APP and you can record your child’s absence from

school here as well. You will also find our School website at http://www.woywoy-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/ which

is regularly updated with events happening in our school. The School email address for correspondence is

woywoy-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au.

Student Mobile Phones

Students who bring their mobile phone to school are asked to leave them at the office on their arrival and

collect it at the end of the school day. Students are not permitted to have their phone with them during the

day. It is also helpful if their name is on their phone.

Late Arrival / Early Departure

If your child is late arriving to school or needs to leave early for an appointment, a partial absence slip is to be

printed at the school office and given to the classroom teacher.

Payment of Money to the School

Understandably, our preferred method of payment for any school costs

is contactless.

Payments for any school fees or activities can be made either by credit

card via the Woy Woy Public School Website (http://www.woy-

.schools.nsw.edu.au) using the ‘Make a Payment’ tab or for your

convenience we have also installed an EFTPOS facility at the front

office.

Should it be necessary for payment to be made using cash, monies should be placed in an envelope

with your child’s name, class and reason clearly noted. If payment is for multiple children, each

must have their own envelope.
