Ronda’s RemarksRonda Dyer, BSPA, RN, CPAN, CAPA

Reaching OutAt PANAC’s Fall Conference, a nurse traveler shared that there are many

perianesthesia nurses in the state who are not PANAC members and hospitals with no representatives. She often shares PANAC information, standards and educational opportunities with new co-workers as she begins assignments, and is excited when she later runs into them at PANAC or ASPAN events.

I wondered, How can we reach those nurses working in hospitals with no active members? What is the potential for growth in PANAC? In hospitals with no members, we have no contact.

I did some research. The California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) lists all California licensed acute care hospitals. We have 422 acute care facilities, not including federally operated veterans or military hospitals. This also does not include surgery centers not tracked by OSHPD. The average hospital has 195 beds with the median 148. Using staffing numbers from my near median 144-bed hospital and considering nurses in all perianesthesia areas, I estimate that there may be as many as 16,000 perianesthesia nurses in our state!

PANAC is working with ASPAN to contact perianesthesia departments in these 422 hospitals with information about our organization to help all perianesthesia nurses have access to current education and standards needed to do their jobs. If you have any innovative ideas how we may reach out to more California perianesthesia nurses, contact me at [email protected]. We would like to add military, VA and outpatient surgery centers to our list if anyone has access to this information.

Prepare Yourself! The Elections Are Coming! By Susan Carter, RN, PANAC Governmental Affairs Chairperson

While not as dire a warning as that shouted by the famous Paul Revere on his midnight ride to warn of the redcoats approach, the upcoming Presidential elections are pretty important.

Watching the debates, one wonders about the fact versus fiction of candidate’s claims and promises. This article will arm you with knowledge so you will be prepared to cast a vote reflective of your personal values, not the falsehoods of campaign promises. Several well-respected, nonpartisan Web Sites are listed:

http://www.factcheck.org/party-lines/ A project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania, the nonpartisan, nonprofit FactCheck.org monitors the factual accuracy of what is said by U.S. political players. The site's goal is to “apply the best practices of both journalism and scholarship, and to increase public knowledge and understanding.”

http://www.politifact.com/ A project of the Tampa Bay Times and partners intends to “help you find the truth in politics. “The website says it fact checks elected officials, cabinet secretaries, lobbyists, people who testify before Congress, and anyone who speaks up in American politics. The site says, “We research their statements and rate the accuracy on our Truth-O-Meter –- True, Mostly True, Half True, Mostly False and False. The most ridiculous falsehoods get our lowest rating, Pants on Fire.” Each year one political statement earns the dubious honors of “Lie of the Year.” In 2009, PolitiFact won the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/ A blog from the Washington Post, The Fact Checker -- as its name would imply -- fact checks statements by politicians and political advocacy groups. It regularly doles out Pinocchios based upon politicians' statements.

http://www.opensecrets.org/ It's not exactly a fact-checking website, but this website from the Center for Responsive Politics tracks the money in politics. The site describes itself as "the nation's premier research group tracking money in U.S. politics and its effect on elections and public policy." Basically, this web site helps you to better understand who is funding campaigns and who may expect favors after an election.

While Fact Check, PolitiFact, and The Fact Checker are among the most well-known, non-partisan examples of fact-checking websites out there, they compete against a number of more partisan sites on both sides of the political spectrum. The most well-known are NewsBusters.org (for conservatives) and Media Matters (for liberals). Each of these will present commentary based on their political leaning and may only provide one side of the story.

Make your vote count and make it based on fact, not what your friends told you. Remember EVERY vote counts, make yours informed.

ASPAN Region 1 Director’s Update—A Gift for the Holidays

Ronda Dyer, Deb Bickford, Patty Crosby, Star Yager, Renita Bassett, Regina Hoefner-Notz (ASPAN Region 1 Director), Lori Silva, and Karen Woods attended LDI in St Louis.

By Regina Hoefner-Notz MS, RN, CPAN, CPN ASPAN Region 1 Director

As I travel, it always amazes me to discover how many professional nurses come together to attend educational programs. My first exposure was in 2001 at ASPAN’s National Conference. I suddenly felt part of something really big and exciting. Were there really thousands of nurses that were doing the same work I was doing? I felt proud to belong. Time is a gift and I have been fortunate to spend

my time this autumn roaming through some beautiful areas in Region 1 and participating in workshops and component meetings.

No matter where I go, I sense that I belong. It doesn’t matter the state, meeting or workshop, large or small, I belong.

The passion that we share for excellent patient care and the drive to create safe environments for those experiencing the unknown aspects of medical intervention is a gift we give to others. What gift have you prepared for yourself?

As we approach the holidays, we begin to share thoughts of family and gratitude. I am thankful I belong to ASPAN. ASPAN’s vision and professional standards are gifts to every perianesthesia nurse. With that in mind, why not create your own gift of professional growth. Set aside a bit of your time or money; wrap it up with a bow for yourself.

Although knowledge is not a tangible gift, it keeps giving in multiple ways. It allows us the ability to be on the cutting-edge of care. It allows us a chance to network and speak the common language of nursing professionals as well as opening our eyes to possibilities.

Invest in yourself! Attend a workshop, meeting, or National Conference. Gift yourself with education and camaraderie. At the 2016 National Conference in Philadelphia, our President, Armi Holcomb will share the ASPAN Board of Director’s gift, a vision and strategic plan to extend ASPAN’s commanding presence into the future; to continue to be a strong and valuable national voice for perianesthesia care.

I hope to see you in April, that is gift enough for me.

PANAC Leaders Participate in LDI

By Ronda Dyer, BSPA, RN, CPAN, CAPA, Pulseline Editor

ASPAN’s Annual September Leadership Development Institute (LDI), this year in St Louis, MO, provided PANAC leaders, Lori Silva, Karen Woods, Renita Bassett, Star Yager, Patti Crosby, and Ronda Dyer the opportunity to glean valuable information from our ASPAN leaders and enjoy time with ASPAN’s Board of Directors and other components’ leaders.

We brought back innovative ideas for reaching our new generation of nurses, promoting membership and encouraging active participation and increasing membership through recruitment and retention.

Recruitment can be bolstered by contacting each hospital’s surgical departments with information about PANAC’s professional benefits including scholarships for research, advanced degrees, and humanitarian missions.

Interesting ideas for retention included offering awards for continuous membership and comparing the certification list with the membership list and reaching out to non-members with reminders of the benefits of membership, reduced cost for CEs and re-certification, and scholarships for research.

Our new members welcome packet could include information about membership benefits, scholarships, education, awards, websites, as well as District and Chapter contact information. District Directors and Chapter Coordinators need notification of their new members.

Every component sought ideas to enhance their chance to win ASPAN’s coveted Gold Leaf Award. PANAC needs to focus on learning about perianesthesia research activities by reaching out to hospitals, members, and graduate nursing programs. In addition, we can conduct surveys, a form of research.

Each of us brought back valuable information to assist in our specific leadership roles. The 2015 LDI inspired us to make our great organization even better!

PANAC Goes Green in the City of Trees

By Kevin MacVane RN, BSN, CAPA

PANAC held its 36th Annual Conference in Sacramento, California's City of Trees, October 16-17.

Over a hundred nurses spent the weekend learning and bridging their new knowledge to their practice to achieve better patient outcomes. Respondents overwhelmingly praised the relevance of the presentations. Friday's topics included microvascular breast reconstruction, pituitary surgeries, and infection control. Saturday brought a plethora of information about enhanced recovery after surgery, moderate sedation, waste anesthesia gas risk, patient monitoring, diabetes, and pediatric laryngospasm. Nurses were excited and thirsty for more information on every topic.

Speaking of trees, PANAC continued in its efforts towards going green and, in so doing, saved trees by offering downloadable handouts. The initiative was met with favorable reviews. At our upcoming Winter Conference in Ventura, the City of Good Fortune, we will proceed to our next step by having on-line evaluations and CE certificates.

Maria Celine Jiminez gathers certification information from the ABPANC table.

Immediiate Past President Tess Mazloomian inducts PANAC's new President Lori Silva at PANAC's Annual Meeting.

After ten years, Promotions Chair Terry Trautloff and Patty Stowers team up once last time to raise $773 for scholarships through raffles and auctions, and $180 in donations to be matched by PANAC to a total of $360 to be donated to the American Cancer Society.

PANAC Members Attend Copenhagen Conference International Collaboration of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ICPAN)

Promoting Global Excellence in PeriAnesthesia Nursing

Sharing and Caring in CopenhagenBy Sue Fossum, ICPAN President

The 3rd International Conference of Perianaesthesia Nurses (ICPAN) was exceptional! Held at the Radisson Blu, 420 international delegates had opportunities for incredible networking, unique visits at local hospitals, and a program featuring 52 international speakers.

Welcomed at Opening Ceremonies by ICPAN Conference Chair Bente Buch and myself, delegates were treated to vignettes of famous characters from Hans Christian Anderson stories.

The scientific program included 2 1/2 days of educational tracks and research poster presentations. Joni Brady and Bente Buch organized and moderated a Gathering of the Nations forum using Shakespeak technology, an interactive, real-time voting tool that records audience participation and responses. Delegates, seated 10 to a table and connected to WiFi, responded to moderators’ clinical practice questions. Within a minute answers were collated and displayed. We quickly realized that wherever we practice worldwide, we share the same concerns related to staffing, safety, and management issues.

The Inaugural Biennial General Meeting was led by Pat Smedley, ICPAN Steering Committee Chair. Pat and a six member international team spent the last two years working with an international attorney to develop and incorporate ICPAN as a non-profit entity with membership available to all perianaesthesia associations. ASPAN supported this process and as a member organization will allow each of you to have access to the ICPAN website for questions, resources and international collaboration. News of the next conference will be posted at www.icpan.org.

After eight years as ICPAN Chair, I will now be turning over the reins to Joni Brady. Joni and the newly elected ICPAN board will guide the organization forward. I anticipate seeing each of you at the next ICPAN conference in 2017!

My FAIRY Tale Adventure in Denmark

By Helen C Fong, MSN, RN

Copenhagen with its canals, cobbled stone walkways, castles, and gothic atmosphere dates back hundreds of years and is home to Tivoli, the original Happiest Place on Earth since 1843 and Walt Disney’s inspiration for Disneyland. Denmark’s Hans Christian Anderson created fairy tales,

Global Topics and TidbitsBy Terry Trautloff

Sixty-five USA nurses joined professionals from around the world at the September ICPAN Conference.

I chose Bispebjerg for my pre-conference hospital tour. Built in 1913 with beautiful gardens and a sprawling campus, the surgery and postoperative care is centralized in a 1950’s style building. The PACU is very modern with shoulder high bedside curtains telescoping from the wall to allow nurses to visualize patients while maintaining privacy. The bright and sunny OR lounge and patient rooms had open, screenless windows. When asked about bugs, the response was, “If they fly in, they fly back out.” (Continued on Page 6)

like the Little Mermaid, the iconic statue overlooking the harbor. For me, the ICPAN Conference was a FAIRY tale experience.

F is Friends—ICPAN was a venue, not only to create new friends but also to reconnect with old friends and colleagues globally.

A is Accommodation—local nurses coordinated Nurse B&B, to house conference attendees. Hosts Anette LøvschallMørch and husband Henrik offered superb accommodations, fellowship, and cultural exchange. We joined with daughters, Louise and Christine to celebrate Christine’s 20th birthday with a special breakfast and Danish flags adorning the home. Henrik prepared sumptuous evening meals and Anette prepared hearty breakfasts each morning.

Anette provided a tour of her private hospital, Aleris Hamlet’s seven operating rooms and nine recovery rooms where they do 40 surgeries daily. The PACU with high ceilings and glass rooftop had an airy feeling. Patients enjoy private rooms while families enjoy coffee, tea, breads and sandwiches in the waiting rooms.

I is “ICPAN” Conference—including pre-conference tours. I chose Rigshospitalet, Denmark’s largest public hospital with 1,200 beds and six treatment centers. Neurosurgery Department alone has five operating rooms doing 3,300 cases a year. It was vastly different from the private Aleris Hamlet Hospital.

The Mayor’s reception at the City Hall welcomed us to Copenhagen with a delicious array of pancakes (crepes) in several flavors and a great time to network with global delegates. Some, like the Korean delegation wore traditional costumes.

The conference offered concurrent evidence-based sessions that globally impact perioperative nursing care, including posters and nursing research from many countries.

R is Rest and Relaxation, time to venture into the magnificent sights of Denmark and neighboring Sweden. Immediately after the Inaugural meeting of the Transitional ICPAN Board, we took the train to Malmo for a canal ride amid the gothic buildings of Sweden. In Denmark, dampened by rain, we enjoyed a photo shoot of the Little Mermaid, shopping, and a foot spa where Turkish fish nibbled on our dead skin cells.

Y is yoghurts (skyr), cheese and baked breads; and Yearn for future ICPAN conferences.

Danish food is one of a kind. We savored different cheeses and skyr (an Icelandic yoghurt), baked breads, present at every meal, and a wide variety of delicious dishes and snacks provided for attendees.

I “yearn” for more ICPAN conferences; will it be Korea or Australia? The next venue will be revealed January 2016.

My ASPAN scholarship to attend the 3rd ICPAN Conference gave me a memorable FAIRY tale experience.

PANAC members, Sue Fossum, Helen Fong, Grace Balleza, and Terry Trautloff, attend the September ICPAN Conference in Copenhagen.

District 3 member, Linda Minnich was presented with the Press Ganey Nurse of the Year Award. Congratulations

Linda for your outstanding leadership and active role in the development and implementation of pain management strategies that improve the patient experience across your organization.

District 3 will host an CPAN/CAPA review class on January 23 in Oakland. I will be there and looking forward to meeting my District members. For more information about upcoming classes please check www.panac.org.

I am excited to announce that the East Bay Chapter will have a new Coordinator when Ernie Hughes assumes the position in January. She has been an RN for 35 years after graduating from Fresno state with her BSN. Her experiences include 20 years in emergency care and 15 years in PACU. She has been working at John Muir Medical Center, Concord for almost 11 years and has been CPAN certified for 9 years. Ernie is also the Vice-Coordinator of ASPAN's Geriatric Specialty Practice Group.

The East Bay Chapter met November 7 in Oakland; their next meeting will be January 9. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Patty Crosby for establishing and coordinating the East Bay Chapter over the past two years.

Happy Holidays everyone.

I was so happy to meet some of you at the October Conference! We have a lot of exciting things happening in our District!

The North Coast Chapter is planning a meeting and CE class in January, date to be determined. Watch for details.

The Sacramento Chapter will be hosting ASPAN’s Foundations of Perianesthesia Practice March 5.

The Sacramento Chapter had their 2nd meeting November 14, with approximately 20 in attendance. Javier Sanchez, the new Chapter Coordinator, and his team: Ludi Lapus, Teresa Jacobs, Lilia Ramos, NoelleLatona, Sherry Gold, Diana Gudeman, Carolyn Cooper

and Helen Fong, did an awesome job! The food was amazing and the speakers spoke on three interesting subjects; Multimodal Anesthesia, Hypoventilation, and Heart Math.

Thanks to Lisa Jenks and ZuhraDabner, for teaming up to get the Napa/Santa Rosa Chapter going!

The Modesto Chapter is in need of a new Coordinator. Is anyone interested in taking this job? It is fun and you will enjoy meeting colleagues from other hospitals/surgery centers in your area. Please let me know if you would like to volunteer.

Hope to see you in Ventura, in February!

District 5Kathy Nichols, BSN, RN, [email protected] The Counties of Fresno, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Mono, and Tulare

District 5 continues to be busy. A District Seminar held November 14 in Visalia was attended by 16 nurses. The speakers, William Winn, MD and Dave Harvey, CRNA, did a splendid job discussing Airway Management and

Sleep Apnea. Kudos to the Visalia Chapter planners of this seminar: Ernie Nunes, Virginia Turner, Susie Nunes, Ronda Dyer, Gina Dias, and Patti Lyons.

As a Community Service Project, Patti Lyons and Virginia Turner organized a PANAC group to staff a medical booth at Fresno’s “2 Cities Marathon,” November 1. Participating were Gina Dias, Ronda Dyer, Susie Nunes, Ernie Nunes, Susan Metz, Karla Lau, and Patti Lyons. They had a great time cheering on the runners and providing medical assistance. Our new District 5 banner was completed prior to the race and on display for the first time at the booth. Thanks Ernie, for designing our banner.

The Fresno Chapter recently began to incorporate educational topics into our monthly meetings. We have discussed Street Drugs and Anesthesia, and Discharge Planning. In November Katarina Ingels presented a very informative presentation on Sleep Apnea. Great job Katarina! We are planning a District Seminar to be held May 21 at Valley Children’s Hospital. More information to follow. For our December meeting we had a Cookie/Recipe exchange and our annual "Steal the Ornament" fun time. Join the meetings and enjoy the networking and planning that your District is providing! Details are posted at www.panac.org, hope to see you soon!
