A New Chapter for PANACAs Tess Mazloomian points out on page 7, PANAC has really grown!

Not just in the record 1400 members, but in member involvement. With 9 Chapters, members have more opportunities for local education and leadership development. Since Chapters are member driven, a local chapter begins by contacting your District Director and asking how!

PANAC stands out among ASPAN Components for growth and innovative ideas. While not a new concept, PANAC Chapters are flourishing because of the leaders who step up and the members who come out to share their

thoughts and ideas. Each local meeting is like a celebration of what is possible. And looking at the size of California, there are even more possible Chapters out there and wonderful leaders-in-waiting! Is this your time to shine?

Come to Costa Mesa with PANACLori Silva, RN, CCRN, CPAN, Education Chair-Elect

October 5-6, 2012 marks PANAC’s third Annual Meeting and Conference at the elegant Westin South Coast Plaza. The most memorable meeting was in 1992, when the earthquake rocked registrants awake. Conference Chair, Lori Silva, PANAC Education Chair-elect, expects a record attendance for this year’s rocking program! With the South Coast Plaza location, this is shaping up to be one of PANAC’s best seminars!

The program w i l l i n c l u d e Acupuncture for Tonsillectomy Pain with Dr. James Ochi and Pediatric Sy ndrome w ith Allan Cresencia, MSN, CPN, RN. Sue Dragoo, RNC-OB, DNP, WHNP will explore caring for the pregnant pat ient and Dr. Julio Duarte will add re s s Up p e r and Lower Airway Spasm: Recognition

and Intervention. There’s also an eye-opening look at how nurses can impact Medicare reimbursement with Dr. Ernest Hayward.

ASPAN President Sue Carter and ASPAN Region 1 Director Debbie Bickford are also scheduled for the 2-day program, with more speakers to be confirmed. On hand to share CPAN/CAPA materials and information, ABPANC Representative Cheryl Coleman, North Carolina, will answer certification questions and have information on how to become a Certification Coach.

These are just a few of the terrific topics planned for Costa Mesa. We also set aside time for you to relax and enjoy the Westin, perhaps their spa, the South Coast Plaza shopping experience, or an evening at the South Coast Repertory Theater. Hmmm, maybe you can come early for a fun-day at Disneyland or take the 10-minute drive to Newport Beach for a little R&R. Look for the Seminar Brochure in August and we’ll see you in October!

ASPAN Region 1 Update National Conference—Just a memory

By Debbie Bickford, BSN, RN, CPAN

Well, the Orlando National Conference isn’t just a memory—but many good ones! For one of my California colleagues, this was her first National Conference and she summed up the experiences as, “Amazing! You can’t help but feel a renewed passion and amazement in the practice we share.” Well said, Valerie.

I thought that th i s year ’s A SPAN Representative Assembly (RA) on Sunday before the Conference, was the liveliest one

we’ve had in a long time. For the first time, a component, Minnesota/Dakotas, brought a resolution to the RA. Their Election Transparency Resolution was introduced, discussed and approved. A dedicated Strategic Work Team (SWT) will explore the policies, procedures and processes involved and report back with suggestions for implementation.

Members Welcome at RA While the RA is limited to ASPAN leaders and component

representatives, all ASPAN members are welcome to sit in the “gallery” to listen to proposals and speak on any proposed issue. I strongly encourage each of you to attend at least the morning session of the RA when the candidates give their speeches and business items and resolutions are introduced. Voting for officers takes place during lunch and announced in the afternoon session.

Prior to the afternoon vote on the morning’s proposals, discussion was open and lively as individuals from the gallery and the RA stepped up to the microphone to make valid points to amend or alter proposals. To keep the process on track, ASPAN’s Parliamentarian, David Wharton, Oklahoma, answered and guided the RA on procedural questions. It was a visual reminder on how following Robert’s Rules of Order kept everything organized and orderly. Way to go, everyone!

Membership Dues IncreaseA proposed membership dues increase generated a great amount of

discussion. While ASPAN dues have not been raised for years, there are many projects that ASPAN would like to establish, as well as, continue to provide services to our growing membership. As the membership goes up (a good thing) the costs of providing services goes up too. Also, ASPAN is developing new educational opportunities like a geriatric seminar for on-line use, and new, and updated seminars. The ASPAN National Office supports components in a number of behind the scene activities that adds to the larger more complex infrastructure.

The biggest boon to the increased membership dues for every ASPAN member is access to the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). This provides a huge resource base for nursing research. If you have a practice question on why we do what we do, or how we should change our practice, you can go on-line and find research to help you validate those questions. Access to that link is available through the ASPAN website.

New ASPAN Standards ApprovedThe RA voted to accept several recommended changes to the

Recommended Practice Standards. The changes won’t affect specific clinical standards, but there are 2 new position statements; one on the Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) patient and another on the nurse with a substance abuse problem. Some position statements will be retired, such as the Fatigue Checklist, and moved from the standards to the website as a resource statement. The Recommended Practice Standards will have a new name and a slightly different format. The new Standards will be available around mid-October.

Region 1 Shows Leadership I was so proud to represent Region 1 at this conference—my first as the

Director. Proud, too, of Region 1’s presence throughout the conference: in leadership roles, presenting research and best practice posters, serving on the nominating committee, as speakers in development, SPG Coordinators, and editors. We continue to grow and keep developing new leaders. Say yes to that nagging voice down deep that says volunteer. That first step will lead you to many fascinating places.

This year, I look forward to meeting many of you at your component meetings. I will be in Arizona, Alaska, California, Nevada, Utah, and Hawaii. Please come and say hello. I will be happy to answer any of your questions about ASPAN; and remember, you can e-mail me at [email protected]

Take time to enjoy yourself this summer.

ASPAN Announces Member BenefitThe Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) databases are now available to ASPAN

members through the ASPAN website at www.aspan.org. The database is an international healthcare resource for best practice summaries, systematic reviews, research and resources. Based at the University of Adelaide in Australia, JBI has 72 centers in 47 countries, with 3 in the United States.

Members can access the JBI databases through the ASPAN web site at www.aspan.org. Anyone interested in perianesthesia nursing research or best-practice information will find this an invaluable resource. The ASPAN website offers a link under “Research” with explanations and JBI access information.

Hail, Honor, Salute!ASPAN Development supports perianesthesia nursing programs

through scholarships and awards, professional education, and evidence-based research.

Major fund-raising events at the National Conference are the Development Walk and Luncheon—sold out to hear Lois Schick.

Hail, Honor, Salute is a way to honor an individual and make a charitable gift to ASPAN. To acknowledge your gift, the honoree receives a formal certificate of your appreciation and good wishes. Information on how to Hail, Honor, Salute! a colleague can be found on the website at www.aspan.org. Contributions to ASPAN Development can also be made on the membership and renewal forms—great ways to honor a special colleague and your practice.

Governmental Affairs UpdateBeverly A Edwardsen, ADN, BSNH, RN, CPN, Fresno, is PANAC’s

Liaison/Representative to the ASPAN Governmental Affairs (GA) Strategic Work Team (SWT). As PANAC’s GA Chairperson, Beverly reports on national and state legislation to ASPAN, the PANAC Board of Directors, and in Pulseline articles. Heading ASPAN’s GA SWT, Donna Goyer, BS, RN, CPAN, CAPA, Roanoke, VA, coordinates information between the National Office and component representatives.

In this election year, Beverly urges nurses to stay informed on legislative issues. Two national government information links on the ASPAN website under Advocacy are worth exploring, www.senate.gov and www.house.gov. For state legislation and issues affecting California nurses, there is the American Nurses Association/ California site, www.anacalifornia.org and the new California State legislature information site, leginfo.legislature.ca.gov. Beverly urges nurses to make a difference, to be informed and, most importantly…be sure to vote.

ABPANC Group Gets Stirred-Up

Terry Trautloff, RN, CAPA

In May, an ABPANC focus group of CPAN and CAPA nurses met in Charlotte, NC to give feedback on Certification Passing Point.

During the meeting, PACU “stir-up regimen” came up as we compared post-op care practices with nurses from other states. While most were older (over 50, like me), experienced PACU nurses, some of the East Coast nurses had never heard the term, and neither had some of the

younger PACU nurses. In Perianesthesia Nursing: A Critical Care Approach by Drain and

Odom-Forren (2009), two pages describe the “stir-up regimen” practice meant to rouse patients and prevent complications like atelectasis (or CO2 build-up from respiratory depression), and venous stasis. There are five main activities: deep breathing exercises, coughing cascade, positioning, mobilization and pain management. Without thinking, we wake our adult patients with, “Mr. Jones, your surgery is over. Take a deep breath and cough. We are going to turn you, I will give you some medication for your pain.” Unlike adults, children once roused, self-stir themselves with crying and moving about—but also need stimulation if respirations are shallow or depressed.

One of the younger nurses in the group, Ruby Bishop, Googled stir-up regimen and found one definition, “A very old nursing term,” along with an article from a 1941 anesthesia journal. We all got a good laugh out of that. Stir-up is also included in PeriAnesthesia Nursing Care, A Bedside Guide for Safe RecoverybyKrenzischekandStannard(2011).Yes,manyof us are getting gray, but the stir-up regimen is still an important part of PACU care. Dust off your copies of these perianesthesia resources, they could be your next in-service briefing.

New April CAPAs

Certification Coaches Wanted

A CPAN/CAPA nurse can earn 3 contact hours per year as a Certification Coach. The Coach encourages certification, mentors their colleagues and records coaching events to send in to ABPANC, the American Board of Perianesthesia Nursing Certification. The 3 contact hours are awarded for submitting the activity log and completing a new Agreement to Serve form each year and count towards the 90 required hours for recertification.

Zelda Williams, ABPANC spokesperson, suggests reviewing the Recertification Handbook for more ways to earn Indirect Care (IC) hours. She added that “serving on a hospital committee merits 3 hours per year, and a possible total of 9 Indirect Care hours in 3 years.”

There are over 9000 certified perianesthesia nurses and over 1000 nurses took the April, 2012 exams. Congratulations to the new California CPAN/CAPAs. PANAC encourages all CPAN or CAPA members to become a Certification Coach—you can make a difference.

District 2 keeps growing! The seeds PANAC President Shay Glevy writes about are planted and

blooming in our district. Our District’s amazing growth prompted PANAC to divide the LA area and Central California into 2 districts; District 2, LA, and Central Valley with me the new District 5 Director. Congratulations to LA/Burbank Chapter Coordinator, Kevin MacVane, appointed interim Director for the new District 2. The exact county divisions are in discussion.

The Burbank/LA Chapter (new District 2) is raffling 2 seats for the 2013 Pasadena Rose Parade. Proceeds support the first nurse’s float and nursing scholarships. The tickets are 6 for $5.00 at PANAC meetings.KevinwilldrawthewinningticketatthePANACCostaMesaConference, October 6. Flyers for bimonthly meetings are emailed and on www.panac.org.

Over a hundred nurses turned out for the Central Valley Fresno Chapter’s Cinco de Mayo Hot, Hot Topics Seminar with Lois Schick! And good news! Lois is coming back to Fresno next spring!

Visalia wil host ASPAN’s Complexities and Challenges of Perianesthesia Nursing with ASPAN Director of Research, Kim Noble, PhD, RN, CPAN, ASPAN Director for Research, at the Holiday Inn November 3.

The Bakersfield Chapter met for lunch, June 16, with Chapter Coordinator Joan Smith to set goals and plan future meetings. Please contact me also with your ideas and preferences for Chapter meetings. I look forward to hearing from you!

And just like that summer is here! After graduations, there are vacations, trips, relaxing in the sun and enjoying family and friends. While enjoying this down-time, you may want to consider preparing for the CAPA or CPAN exam this fall in October. To kick-start your exam-prep, sign up for the July 28 ASPAN Certification Review Course in Sacramento with ASPAN Past-president Linda Wilson, PhD, RN, CPAN, CAPA, BC, CNE. See the brochure at www.aspan.org. Remember the CPAN CAPA examination registration window is July 9—September 10. To register or find information on certification or recertification visit www.cpancapa.org.

Our district chapters continue to meet throughout the summer months; updates and details are on the calendar at www.panac.org for local and state events. Encourage your perianesthesia coworkers to come with you. Remember chapter meetings and CEs are free and open to all, not just PANAC members. If you would like to host an upcoming chapter meeting, please contact me or your Chapter Coordinators, Lori Silva in Modesto or Marcie Wolfe in Sacramento. Your involvement is what keeps our meetings fresh and rich with deeper connections. Now that’s HOT!
