Welcome to 2008! I wish all our Ballroom Dancers a Happy New Year of more dancing in the New Year. Our annual Christmas Party was great fun with a ton of food from our generous dancers at our covered dish dinner. The show was spectacular with the highlight of Richard and Laurie Collett performing theatre arts for us. I especially find their rendition of “Holy Night” to be an awesome portrayal of the real meaning of Christmas. For me, the holiday season begins with the annual USA Dance Christmas party. I want to make everyone aware that we have an on going Outreach Program that spreads Christmas cheer to those unable to leave their nursing homes. This last outreach we had a problem with traffic on I-75 heading south to Sun City. We arrived half an hour late, but the nursing staff had everyone waiting patiently for us to get there and set up for an hour of dancing. Carol Peterson has been working on these programs for years and I consider her one of the unsung heroes of the ballroom dance community in the Tampa Bay area. Thank you again Carol! Aslo thanks to you all who so generously volunteer to do a little dance or two. I encourage anyone who would like to contribute to this program to let us know. You do not have to be a dancing “Super Star” to bring joy to those much less fortunate than ourselves. Our demos consist of group dances as well as solo dances and we always end with an audience participation of the Merengue which is great fun! Peg and I had the privilege of providing DJ services to the 12th Annual Dance Spree in Orlando recently. Jean Krupa and Henry Eure really put together a great “dance camp” weekend with hotel room, meals, group lessons and social dances all included. If you like large dance floors, this one was huge! A total of 8000 SF of wood dance floor in the evenings and two 4000 SF floors for group lessons during the day. There were also Social Team Matches, the Parade of Chapters, Competitors Team Match, and Dance Mixers. Peg and I worked with our coach, Rick Elliott in the group classes for 5 hours on Waltz, Foxtrot, and Quickstep. Rick is quite entertaining to have a lesson with. He always keeps a great sense of humor throughout the lesson, and by the time the lesson is finished, everyone has the patterns down well. The next day there were reviews of each of the group lessons, and many of the dancers brought video cameras to record the steps for future practice. Great idea! I know how fleeting memory is when trying to remember dance figures! We also met the new President Elect of USA Dance,

Peter Pover. I remember when Peter was National President in 1991. Just as Peg and I joined USABDA, Peter’s term of office was winding down. After 16 years we have finally met. Peter Pover has been involved with Ballroom Dancing since the 1950’s and has a wealth of experience and knowledge that is extraordinary. We talked about music and DJ-ing dances. Peter remembers when the hot Cha Cha of the day was Tea For Two (shudder). Music was provided via 45 vinyl records on a small turn table, and it was the duty of the DJ to carefully place the needle on the record to keep static noise to a minimum. My, how things have changed! I believe Peter Pover will make an excellent National President in the years to come, and I look forward to his leadership and progress. December, 2007 was also our month to hold elections. We have one change to announce, and that is the retirement of Pete Peterson from the position of Chapter Vice President. After 14 years of service, Pete deserves a break. I want to thank him for being there year after year, and I know that he will continue to attend and support all the functions SouthernStar has to offer. When you see Pete be sure to thank him for his service and dedication to Ballroom Dancing in the Tampa area. Replacing Pete is Carl Blevins. Carl and wife Leila have really gotten involved with dancing since they started competing a couple of years ago, and Carl will be an asset on our Board of Directors. In summation, I thank Pete for his incredible service of many years, and I congratulate Carl for stepping up and joining the Board. Let’s have another fine and fun year of being together and enjoying the greatest activity on earth, Ballroom Dancing. See you on the dance floor in 2008!

From Russia With Love: Yulia and Sergey Kopylov

Our November 14, 2007 USABDA Chapter Dance Show featured performers new to Tampa. They were greeted by warm and admiring spectators.

Yulia and Sergey Kopylov were introduced by their daughter, Daria, who thanked the audience for their support and enthusiasm, and shared the highlights of the Kopylovs’ dance history. This husband-and-wife team has been partners for 28 years, and “lovers” for 17 years. During their successful careers, this professional pair has danced all over the world and received numerous awards and high praise for their work, including two world championship wins in their native Russia. Now coaching students in the Tampa Bay area, “They are living happily ever after,” said Daria.

A glitzy samba started the show. Yulia led the way onto the floor with her slinky samba walks. Her outrageously glam costume of shimmering gold, neon bangles, and flowing sashes helped to set the mood for this stylish jaunt. Sergey led broad samba rolls, sharp spot turns, and rhythmic free spins, creating a sophisticated routine without a single dull moment.

The second number, an intimate tango, was slower and more intense than the samba it followed. Yulia played the coy but dramatic señora very

convincingly. Her black-gloved hands waved a lace fan behind which shy smiles for Sergey emanated. Occasionally Yulia tossed her delighted audience a coquettish glance, as well. The Kopylovs created tension and suspense by dragging every step to the last millisecond of the beat. The dance ended with a taste of expansive paso doble. At the last moment, Sergey’s partner seemed to swoon in his arms to a femme fatale pose.

A transformed Lady in Red met her all-black-clad paramour for a slow rumba. This dance of love included beautiful liquid hip rolls in open and closed positions, synchronized spins on diagonals, and beautiful long rondés from Yulia. The sequence ended as Yulia sauntered solo to the far corner of the floor; smitten Sergey ran after her and slid on his knees to take her hand and beg one last look.

The Kopylovs’ final dance of the evening was a segue impersonating Kermit the Frog (Sergey in a green suit) and Miss Piggy (Yulia in sequined layers of pink and white). This dance included elements from many styles: lively quickstep with runs and pivot turns, deliberately awkward touches of tango, and dashes of Latin. Occasionally a jealous Yulia pouted in the center of the floor while her froggy partner deserted her to tease blushing ladies on the front row of the audience. This sparked a tiff echoed in the music; the Kopylovs convincingly lip-synced the recorded argument. To our relief, they made up in the end, accompanied by a jazzy Together Again.

Yulia and Sergey are available to coach International Standard and Latin dancers at all levels.

The whole Kopylov family got into the act! From left: Yulia, Barbara, Sergey, and Daria

Laurie and Richard Collett, professional theatre arts competitors and owners of the Rhapsody Ballroom,

provided a tremendous holiday show for our Christmas chapter dance.

The holidays are certainly a busy time for everyone, but it was no surprise that our chapter dance was such a popular event. Who could pass up the great food, fun, and most importantly, the great ballroom dancing that has made this the place to be every second Wednesday of the month.

It was a special evening right from the start, with Frank Sliwa’s group class that segued right into the evening’s social dance.

It was a covered dish dance and there was plenty of festive holiday fare to go around. Along with the food was the opportunity to work off those extra holiday calories with plenty of ballroom dancing. The music was a treat with DJ and chapter president, Mike Johnston, on hand “spinning” the tunes from his fancy laptop computer. There were lots of cha chas, tangos, and swings, blended in with waltz and foxtrot mixers that were sure to get everyone up on their feet.

To cap off the festivities, the ballroom owners, Richard and Laurie Collett, also provided the entertainment for the evening as well as the venue for all of our chapter dances.

They began with a perfectly delightful medley of dances that effortlessly combined both Smooth and

Standard styles as they drew on their rich dance background to fashion a number that highlighted their own dexterity and unique clarity of movement.

While they changed costumes for their finale, our MC, Edy Sequeira, talked about the upcoming “Celebrity Dancing” benefit in March that will feature many of the local celebrities dancing with the area’s professionals.

Next it was time for the door prize drawings. We were all eyeing those yummy Jack Daniels-filled chocolates, but lucky Gordon Christensen managed to snag those! Did anyone see if he shared those????

Stella Lee and Marty Meere were supposed to have taken part in the performance this night, but were unable to attend due to Stella’s inconvenient bout with the flu. By the time you read this, she surely will have recovered and should be back in the ballroom the next time we all get together again.

Richard and Laurie returned to the dance floor with an eloquent theatre arts dance to “Oh Holy Night”. With elegant and joyous expression they gave voice to the birth of Jesus story in quiet and reflective movements and fluid transitions between lifts that ended in a touching father, mother, and baby tableau. It was a fitting ending to an empassioned performance. Thank you for your generosity in providing a special place for our chapter to hold the monthly dances and for sharing your dancing talents with us as well.

Here’s wishing you all a happy new year filled with lots of great dancing!

As always Richard and Laurie injected their own indelible sense of form into their Smooth/Standard medley.

Chapter elections were held in December. All current officers were re-elected with the exception of Pete

Peterson, who wanted to step down from his post as Vice President, a post he has held for 14 Years. Elected into

that position was Carl Blevins.

Boni Locke and Bob Behrman, shown here with Jean Krupa, took part in the annual Dance Spree.

Dear Ms. Promenade, My husband and I are new on the dance scene. We have been watching instructional videos for the last two weeks hoping to learn a few steps in Swing and Waltz. We watched Corky Ballas describe, then dance some Swing figures. Very impressive. Then my husband tried. I must say he looked like a pregnant ostrich stepping on sand spurs! We moved on to Marcus Hilton and the beautiful Waltz. Somehow my husband transformed himself into a giraffe shaped jello mold. Are we on the right track here, or should we just stick with watching “Dancing With the Stars”? Stumbling and bumbling in Seffner Dear Stumble Bum, Sounds to me like you should be selling videos of your husband! If how you described him is true, maybe you should be watching “Wild Kingdom” or the Animal Planet. Give him a little time, Deary. The men do eventually grow out of those “awkward” stages! All the best, Ms P.

We have made the leap into the electronic age. We are making a quality version of the newsletter available online to reduce mailing expenses to the chapter.

Currently the newsletter is costing about $3.00 per issue to produce and mail. This could be substantially reduced if sent electronically. Who knows? With the savings we could hold more free dances, have more money for scholarships, better refreshments etc. Interested in being part of this experiment? Send us your email address to [email protected] or [email protected]

The StarDancer Newsletter is published bimonthly by the SouthernStar Chapter of USADance and has a current circulation of 350 copies with over 600 readers throughout the Tampa Bay area.

Have you had a chance to thank our officers, committee members, and Members-At-Large for their efforts to make our chapter activities more enjoyable?

Please take a moment and let them know you appreciate what they do, because these are the people who, many times, are the energy behind the scenes.

They take care of all the little things that make the monthly dances happen, from getting you the information about dance events, to greeting you at the door, arranging for food, setting up and sometimes even performing the monthly entertainment, gathering and playing the music, and at the end of the evening, cleaning up and locking up. They take the time to fill out the forms, pay the bills, and see to all the details necessary to keep us all dancing. They set up and perform outreach activities; work on our web site; answer your e-mail letters and telephone calls. And sometimes, they even get to dance a little!
