PRESIDENT’S REPORT DECEMBER
Last month was another busy month with terrific and enjoyable opportunities to have our vehicles out
and about.
As discussed at our last meeting, we may have even more coffee runs next year. These are to include
the folk still in the workforce who sadly miss our midweek runs. The committee may well need a helping
hand so please keep your eyes and ears open and put forward any ideas for 2018 runs. Whether it is a
nice venue for coffee or an interesting outing, it is amazing how often it is just finding the idea which
turns out to be the hard part of an outing. Hopefully we can then share the load.
It’s out with the polish next month for the Standard of Excellence at the up-coming Christmas Party and
a chance to put the club’s best foot forward, not to mention a lovely party for us all. Thanks Barb for
arranging it.
As the year draws to a close it is timely to acknowledge the work done on your behalf by a pretty
amazing executive group. Sue and Barry just plain keep the club running. No fuss, job done!! A more
efficient and effective duo would be hard find. Jeff, Rudi and Terry have worked consistently to provide
us with a great variety of really enjoyable venues and events all year. Found, researched, booked and
reported on; the rest of us just roll up and have a good time.
Congratulations to Fiona, ably assisted by Shirley, for the outstanding production of Accelerations. It
gets better and better and is a real pleasure to read. They keep the club informed and create a cohesive
social element. Bryan continues his valued guidance and patient work with the authorities, stepping in
with events and presentations. Last, but by no means least, is Jason whose role and responsibility
grows annually. The new registration system and consequent rise in interested members has placed a
heavy burden on Jason and I am grateful both for his effective work and his good humour in his
enlarged role. These people are the heavy lifters in the club but thankfully the executive is supported by
all those members who put their hands up to assist. Whether large or small, their contribution is vital to
the wellbeing of our club.
I know we all say thanks during the year and really mean it. But I want to say thank you again - a really
big, whole hearted Thank You and vote of sincere appreciation for their hard work.
And finally, to everyone in the club who rocks up, enthusiastic and supportive, looking forward to just
getting together with our vehicles, thank you for your part in making our club. I think it’s a cracker!
Happy Christmas. Lets have a fun year in 2018. David Besson

RECENT EVENTS: COFFEE RUN TO MACLEAN 25TH OCTOBER 2017.
A great rollup of cars and members travelled to Maclean for our coffee run. It was a beautiful day after the recent rain and we travelled in convoy to the Botero Cafe & Coffee Roasting Shed.
After a very enjoyable morning tea (and great coffee) with huge cakes, we were treated to a tour of the roasting shed. This was very interesting and informative and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. It is great to see a local small business producing such a wonderful product.
After the tour some members adjourned to the lookout and onto the Yamba Tavern for lunch.
Overall a great day, thoroughly enjoyed by all. Jeff Johnson

RECENT EVENTS—BROADWATER COFFEE RUN 8TH NOVEMBER 2017
Thanks to the twenty-eight club members who joined us on our latest coffee run, to “Our Daily Bread
Cafe” at Broadwater. On a day which could not decide whether to rain or be sunny it was a good idea to
leave the convertibles at home, or at least make sure the roof was on. I understand Don had to stop to
put up his roof to protect himself and his beautiful car. I hope everyone enjoyed our meander through the
countryside to Tatham, Coraki, Woodburn and finally to Broadwater. Some of the highway roadworks
are starting to look interesting.
At the cafe we were given our own parking area, which we overflowed, and our own tables, set up
beautifully. Coffee and lovely cakes were provided and as usual everyone enjoyed a good chat and
catch up, as well as checking out the ‘new’ cars that members bring along. All good fun. See you at the
next run. Rudy

RECENT EVENTS—PRESIDENTS RUN TO OCEAN SHORES—19/11/2017
An overcast afternoon meant that the vast majority of Members did not opt to drive a
convertible with the top down on our romantic hinterland tour! One brave person did, but
sadly he had to pull over and raise his roof en route.
We met at Alstonville for delightful refreshments, including cheese and beverages, plus
strawberries dipped in chocolate ganache, compliments of our President. We then drove
via a scenic rural route which included Tintenbar, Binna Burra and Mullumbimby, arriving
at Ocean Shores Country Club in plenty of time for a sunset dinner on the verandah. We
were rewarded with a beautiful sunset and enjoyed the relaxed dining.
Thank you David and Gayl for organising another excellent outing.

HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY
On Sunday 5th November, we
were fortunate enough to be
invited to attend a party at Evans
Head to celebrate the 100th
birthday of Eric Watson.
Eric was the manager of Watson
& Sons who specialised in motor
vehic le t r imming, general
upholstery, panel beating, and
boat sales and motor servicing.
Eric was working in the trimming
section when I worked as an
Evin rude outboard motor
mechanic and Pioneer chainsaw
mechanic.
I remember admiring Erics 1963
V8 Studebaker Lark which was
unusual as Eric, being a motor
trimmer, had fitted the car with a
vinyl overlay on the roof.
Eric had owned the car it was only a few months old but over the years the car had slipped into disrepair
and was given to Erics grandson Robbie Watson.
To everybodys surprise, Robbie has totally restored the vehicle and managed to complete and register
the car in time for Erics 100th birthday. Robbie took Eric for a drive in the Studebaker and said
“Grandad you can have the car back when you can prove to me that you hold a current Australian
drivers licence”! I guess Robbie will get to keep the car, even though Eric is still as bright as ever.

S H A V E F O R A C U R E Long standing Members may recall lunch at the Yamba Tavern
some years back when the Tavern was hosting a “Shave for a Cure”
event, and David Gordon volunteered to have his chest waxed if
Club Members dug deep for Sponsorship—the rest is history! Dave
has grown his hair to an unruly length, to prove to the world that
now being 70 does not mean he has to go bald, and he is seeking
sponsorship to again support this very worthwhile cause.

On 24th July 2017, our Club and Barlows of Ballina hosted a car display and BBQ at Barlows premises
in Ballina and we jointly raised $300 which it was decided was to be donated to a local Driver Education
Course. The Club Members voted to increase the donation from our funds and $500 was presented to
the Lismore PCYC to assist them with their Safer Drivers Course for learner drivers.
We plan to collaborate with the PCYC in the future and raise further funds for this worthwhile cause.
SUMMERLAND Car Club's Bryan White (left) presents a cheque to Mark Greig from PCYC's Learner Driver program, while Snr Const Lachlan Bransgrove, Geoff Jacobs from Barlows and club members Fiona and David Gordon look on.
“Classic car sports donate to help young drivers
IT IS not so much about old dogs teaching young dogs new tricks but how to keep them safe.
This week the Summerland Sports and Classic Car Club made a $500 donation to Lismore PCYC to help them run their Safer Drivers Course for learner drivers.
When they heard the PCYC ran a training course for the region's youth, the classic car enthusiasts thought what better way to give their support than to help with the program's operating costs.
Vice-president of Summerland Sports and Classic Car Club, Bryan White, said learner driver courses were "fundamental to making roads safer”.
"We treasure our cars and spend a lot of time on the road and see a lot who do not know how to drive properly or care for their cars,” said Mr White.
"It really is important to teach the young how to drive, not just pass the test.”
Barlows of Ballina initially raised $300 to help local driver training, to which Summerland Car Club then added a further $200.
This year, more than 40 safer driver programs were run by the PCYC from Casino to Grafton and Lismore, enabling learners to notch up 20 L-plate hours of instruction.
Senior Constable Lachlan Bransgrove, who is the Lismore PCYC's youth case manager, said: "Safer roads means a safer community.”
He said Summerland Car Club's donation was much appreciated and would help local young people make the transition to becoming independent drivers.
The car club's publicity officer, David Gordon, said he looked forward to further collaboration between the two clubs and would be planning further fundraising opportunities at car rallies in the future.
For more information on the Learner Drivers course, go to www.pcycnsw.org.au/lismore”
