THE SUMMERLAND COVE QUARTERLY A Message from our President It is good to see our friends and neighbors returning after a summer season away. The neighborhood is busy with activity again. The Association has been busy getting a social schedule together for the upcoming new year, the front entrance and bridges are looking great, and a busy holiday season is ahead. Our Annual Meeting will be held in mid January. The Board of Directors is busy searching for people to fill in a few empty Board seats. After more years than we want to admit, both myself and Abby (Treasurer) are stepping away from the Board and Sharon will be stepping down as Beautification Chair. Speaking for all of us, it has been a rewarding and educational experience to serve on the Board. Thankfully, the other Board members are staying on or filling in another seat. We need - President - someone to tie the loose ends together, hold meetings and keep the ball moving forward, - Beautification Chair - someone to coordinate our landscaping needs at the front entrance and bridges, - Government Chair - someone to attend government meetings with agendas that might impact our community and report back to Board. - Newsletter Writer - someone to put the newsletter together quarterly - Website Master - someone to update the website (it’s easier than you might think) Please give these positions your attention and contact any of the Board members if you have questions or are thinking about serving. We need volunteers to keep this Association together. There is always a lot of support among the Board members and the membership is very grateful. Thank you for your support. A Message from our President

It is good to see our friends and neighbors returning after a summer season away.

- Newsletter Writer - someone to put the newsletter together quarterly - Website Master - someone to update the website (it’s easier than you might think)

Please give these positions your attention and contact any of the Board members if you have questions or are thinking about serving. We need volunteers to keep this Association together. There is always a lot of support among the Board members and the membership is very grateful.

Thank you for your support.

Manatees have recently been spotted in our canals. As the water to the north cools, we might see even more visitors to our warm canals.

Please operate your vessels with caution and slow speeds in our canals.

While the winter weather is delightful for an evening walk, it does get dark earlier. If you are out and about near the roadway in the evening, walking the dog, riding your bike, etc., please be sure to carry some form of light with you so that you will be seen by a passing motorist. A flashlight, lighted dog collar, proper bike lighting - are good moves to be sure you are seen in the darkness.

We hope you will renew your membership !!

We are looking for a few good volunteers to help on our Board… as President, Beautification Chair, Government Liaison, Newsletter Editor and Website Master.

Our Board has a great team attitude, we work together to problem solve and get the job done. You do not have to be a full timer in Summerland Cove as the summer time is usually quite a slower pace. With email and the internet, you can always be close by.

Please consider joining the Board today - WE NEED YOU !!!!

YOU SMELL LIKE FISH!!!By Capt. Pete Peterson

I picked my wife up from work the other day and as soon as she got in my truck she indignantly proclaimed: “It smells like fish in here!!!” Totally unfazed, I almost blurted out my standard response to her olfactory acuity responses: “That’s the smell of victory!”, but I hesitated when it occurred to me I didn’t even go fishing today. Hoping to avoid a long drawn out situation I decided to try out a new excuse: “well maybe it’s the fragrance of my new ‘fish scented’ car freshener!” Her nose was still twitching as she continued to sniff the air in an attempt to locate the source of the pungent offensive smell. Hoping to get her to focus on her side of the truck, I admitted the odor might be coming from the passenger side floor mat where I spilled a little bait juice a few days before. Like a determined bloodhound she continued honing in on the pungent fishing odor until she unfortunately determined the “offensive smell” was indeed emanating from my side of the truck. She then leaned over, took a whiff of my shirt, and loudly announced: “it’s your shirt…it smells like rotten fish!” Now I have always found it interesting people are so repulsed by the smell(s) emanating from fish. As a fisherman, I personally think these unique odors blend perfectly with all of the other interesting smells floating around our islands (like rotting seaweed). While humans may recoil when confronted with fish smells, it is important to remember these unique odors are vital to their survival. In fact, fish are dependent on producing a variety of specialized scent pheromones, which serve as powerful chemical signals and provide essential communications in the vast ocean. There are some “fishy” pheromones which are released to specifically attract members of the opposite sex, while additional scents serve to trigger and initiate spawning behaviors. Fish also have the ability to release alarm odors which contain specific substances formulated to elicit escape and evasive anti-predator responses for individual fish as well as schools of fish.

….continued on next page…..

Page 10: THE SUMMERLAND COVE QUARTERLY

..You Smell Like Fish - continued…. These powerful pheromones are composed of amino acids, bile salts, and or/or prostaglandins. Scientists have carefully studied and analyzed these chemical signals and have even gained some success in identifying and replicating many of these unique odors that impact social behaviors among fish. Of course fishermen are primarily interested in the synthetic pheromones which can catch various species of fish. A quick search on the internet will bring up a plethora of websites offering to trade you a “guaranteed fish attractant” in exchange for your hard earned cash. These artificial scents are sold as liquids, creams and even sprays. Do attractant scents really work? Most of the best (i.e., expensive) plastic lure companies actually do integrate a proprietary sent into their plastic formulas, and some fishermen swear these attractants indeed help catch more fish. The problem is these scents can quickly deteriorate once exposed to water and sunlight. So many fishermen (especially freshwater/tournament anglers) often apply additional aftermarket scents to their lures periodically throughout the day, hoping to gain an advantage over wary fish. If fish are responsive to chemical signals released through fish pheromones, then they can surely detect offensive odors left behind on bait/lures/terminal tackle. These smell(s) can be transferred from a fisherman’s hands and often include scented hand soaps, fragrant sunscreens, or even noxious bug repellants. You can only imagine what these scents do to a fish’s olfactory glands if it gets transferred onto your bait! Not to worry, the “scent guys” have also developed cover scents, which they claim are effective in camouflaging baits from the smells released from fishermen. The efficacy of some pheromones on fish behavior has been clearly demonstrated on sharks. Sensational media coverage on horrific shark attacks have renewed efforts to find effective methods to keep sharks away from popular ocean swimming and surfing locations. Research conduced on “shark deterrent” avoidance pheromones has shown the scent of some dead sharks was found to serve as an effective repellant (under certain conditions) for Blacknose, Caribbean Reef and Lemon Sharks. I have eaten and handled so many fish and baits over the years that my hands and perspiration are probably permanently tainted with fish pheromones. This may explain why I don’t need to use fish attractants and my wife thinks my shirt smells like fish!
