NORTHTOWN NEWS OCTOBER 2019 3

President’s Perspective: Sheila Ruling 602-494-9979 Happy October! Please welcome Nadine Wells as secretary/treasurer filling the vacancy left by Joni Zarko through the end of the year. She will also be running for a seat in the upcoming 2020 elections held at the Members Meeting in December. There will be 5 vacancies to fill so be sure to submit your candidate form by November 12th. If you have an item to place on the agenda for a vote at the Members Meeting (CC&R, Bylaw), it must be submitted to the Board by the October Board meeting. For the time being, Northtown is relying on a number of volunteers who have stepped up to help with office, clubhouse, pool and architectural control/compliance. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Here’s a quick recap of accomplishments in September: The office telephone has been reinstalled, the Attorney General complaint has been resolved, the website has a new look, and documents have been updated, the pool problem has been corrected at no cost to Northtown, office files are being cleaned and caught up, and the list goes on and on. I want to assure you that the Board and volunteers have been very busy. Just a reminder: With temperatures cooling it is time to groom our yards. The compliance team will be touring the neighborhood and sending out violation notices if warranted. If you need assistance with yard work be sure to call Liz McNamara who has a group of volunteers ready to lend a hand. Election Committee: Bob Carver & Naomi McCarthy

Do you ever wonder?

When will they take care of…? Why don’t they discuss…?

Don’t they realize we need…?

Well here’s the answer…there is no they!!!

Here in Northtown they is actually ‘we’ and ‘us’ and maybe even ‘you’. The HOA is managed by our Board of Directors. The annual assessment, the color of the trim on the Clubhouse, where to place lighting on the grounds, and how many guests are allowed in the pool are all decisions made by the Board. This group of volunteers (yes, they are all residents and/or lot owners who serve without pay) is usually a total of seven folks. But at the moment there are only three people holding down the fort. With the help of many very important ‘unofficial’ hands, we will proceed toward the end of the year and all essential business will continue. But we need those four open seats on the Board filled to spread the load and do a proper management job going forward. The next election will be held in December; nominations for that election are due no later than the November Board meeting which will be held Tuesday, November 12. The nomination form is in this newsletter and can be submitted to any Board member. Think about what you care about and what you can contribute; talk to your spouse, your friend, or your neighbor. A wide variety of background and experience is useful in any Board job, but interest in the community and willingness to learn are the most important requirements. Please consider helping.

COMMUNITY INTERESTS: (This section of the Newsletter relates to Resident Organizations / Clubs / General information and is not “Official Association Business.”)

Northtown Pilgrims and Indians - let’s get together on Sunday, November 17th at 2:00 PM and have a big feast. We can call it Thanksgiving!!!!! This feast is a big success every year because of the many Northtowners who volunteer to help. There are many jobs, big and small, so let Stephanie Shink of Social Activities know how you can help to make this another success. 602-689-1786 Because this feast is our largest event of the year, and the occupancy of the Clubhouse is limited to 125 Pilgrims and Indians, please understand this Feast is by RESERVATION ONLY. Reservations will be taken by phone by calling Naomi or Nora at 602-971-6779. Please, - you must respond no later than November 10th. A list will be created, and you will be given an envelope with your dinner tickets at the door for the number of people in your party on the day of the feast. Only those on the reservation list will be admitted. If you are confined to your home and would enjoy this meal, please call Naomi or Nora at 602-971-6779 with your name, address and phone number, and your meal will be delivered to your door. NORTHTOWN COMMUNITY BLOCKWATCH/PNP: Hopefully, you have seen the recently installed lights illuminating the “Monument” Entrance signs at Greenway Road / 22nd Street and 20th Street / Tierra Buena Lane. Thank you to Diane Hoverson, Maryann Weirick and Bob Carver for their time and efforts in getting this project completed. We were also able to install another light pole in the open area north of Greenway Road, and we are happy to report these are all Solar Lights (no electric bills for Northtown). We will be applying for another Grant for next year, (application to be submitted November/December, 2019) and would like to receive your suggestions for Solar Light placements. Keep your eyes open for a dark place, and let Bob Carver know your suggested area.

KOFFEE KLATCH: Peggy Pennington, President 602-317-2562 Koffee Klatch has resumed regular weekly meetings now that Fall has officially begun. Hopefully, we will start to enjoy some cooler weather. We started off with a great September meeting. Everyone was happy to see each other, and we were pleasantly surprised when 3 officers from the Black Mountain Precinct stopped by. It's always nice to see them and learn what has been happening in our area. Dana, from Veterans First (Mary Ellen's Place) will be joining us on Thursday, October 3rd. She keeps us informed on Women Veterans issues and offers ways we can help. Don't forget to search for those "baby pictures" for the "Guess Who" contest to be held Thursday, Dec. 5th. Halloween is October 31st. Watch out for those ghouls, goblins and ghosts! VETERANS FIRST / MARY ELLEN’S PLACE Thank you, Thank you all for donating way over the amount Koffee Klatch pledged to Veterans First / Mary Ellen’s Place for their Women Veteran’s Beauty Bash. We can’t thank you enough! Dana Oviat from Veterans First & Mary Ellen’s Place is coming to our October Koffee Klatch Luncheon. Thank you to Koffee Klatch ladies and Northtown residents for helping us meet our goal. We are happy to help make this event a success for these deserving women. We’ll find out what their future needs are and post it on the donation bin in the Clubhouse.

1/4 cup soy sauce (reduced sodium)

1 Tblsp minced garlic

Directions: Whisk honey, soy sauce, garlic & ginger together in medium bowl. Place shrimp in large zip-top bag or Tupperware. Pour ½ of marinade on top, give it a shake. Marinade in refrigerator for 15 minutes or for up to 8-12 hours. Cover and refrigerate rest of marinade. Heat olive oil in a skillet over med-high heat. Place shrimp in skillet. (discard used marinade). Cook shrimp on one side until pink (45 seconds), then flip shrimp over. Pour in remaining marinade and cook it all until shrimp is cooked through, about 1 minute more. Serve shrimp with cooked marinade sauce and a garnish of green onion. The sauce is excellent on brown or white rice with steamed veggies on the side.

Liz McNamara’s church, The Shelter, has a “Community Service” program where several members come to Northtown the first Saturday of every month to help neighbors in need with yard or household chores. Call Liz at 602-971-3893 mid-month, and she will see that your name gets on the list for the next first Saturday. They can only help 4 -5 homeowners each visit, depending on the jobs, so First Come – First Served.

Don’t forget to pick up after your dog?

Reminder: Please heed the speed limit in Northtown. . . 20 MPH. No more – no less.

Joke of the Month: Bob forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was mad. She told him “tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE!!” The next morning when his wife woke up, she looked out the window to find a box…gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale…Bob has been missing since Friday.

Northtown Organizations and Clubs:

Northtown has several organizations and clubs open to all residents that operate within the boundaries of Northtown, but are not an official part of Northtown Homeowners’ Association. They are as follows: KOFFEE KLATCH Meetings are held every Thursday at noon in the Northtown Clubhouse. This group is open to all women in the Northtown community. We share our life experiences and are always looking for ways to improve ourselves and our neighborhood. We collect non-perishable food items for St. Vincent DePaul Society. During the holidays, we contribute to various charities. We host guest speakers, and frequently, Black Mountain Police Precinct officers visit to keep us informed on ways to keep our community safe. The first Thursday of each month, we celebrate Birthdays for that month. Meetings are Brown Bag (bring your own lunch). Dues are $ 1.00 per meeting. NORTHTOWN COMMUNITY BLOCKWATCH/Phoenix Neighborhood Patrol (PNP) This group is registered with the Phoenix Neighborhood Patrol Organization – ID# 1323. Block Watch/PNP members patrol Northtown to be the “eyes and ears” for the Black Mountain Police Precinct. This group started in 2001 and has continued patrolling, applying for grants to buy safety and security items such as motion detector lights, dusk to dawn lights, and more. These are yours for the asking when available. For more information or to be trained to become a PNP member, please contact Bob Carver at 602-787-0016 or Nora Curtin at 602-689-9696, or email [email protected]. QIGONG: Qigong is slow and gentle movement combined with conscious breathing. There are both seated and standing exercises. We meet Friday mornings at 10:00 AM in the Clubhouse. These lessons are taught by Kathleen Brezina who is a Certified Qigong Instructor. There is no charge. CARDS AND GAMES: Several different groups have regular cribbage, poker (nickel, dime, and quarter), Hand and Foot, Pokeno (pennies/nickels) & LRC (quarters) games. See the calendar on the back of the newsletter or on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse (near the kitchen). SUNSHINE CLUB: The Sunshine Club sends cards (Birthday, Condolence, Get Well, etc.), and acts as a Welcome Wagon for new neighbors. The Sunshine Club collects cans to recycle for cash, which is used for postage, cards, etc. Please donate cans in the collection container at the Clubhouse. For information, contact Kitty Cordasco 602-569-5266 or Annabel Kipp 602-992-4373.
