La Siesta Evangelical Church

Hi everyone Christmas seems a long time ago when there was the excitement of celebrating the birth of our Lord. In the ensuing weeks we have heard about the visit of the wise men....three did you say...probably a lot more as it was possible they travelled with many others for safety....their names....Balthazar, Caspar, and Melchior....but the Bible does not name them for us. We have heard about Jesus first sermon in the synagogue in Nazareth....a sermon that upset people. We also heard about the first three disciples, Simon Peter, James and John, fishermen from the Sea of Galilee. A reading from Corinthians compared the church today to a body, a body with many parts, parts that need to be effective to ensure the smooth running of the church....it’s a challenge to try and give more to the running of the church, by using the gifts God has given us to help and support. We are now approaching Lent...it will soon be Shrove Tuesday or pancake day as we call it. No doubt many of you will be making pancakes even tossing them? I think we will be having some...with treacle or may be lemon juice and sugar. I don’t know about you but I love pancakes. Geoff usually makes them in our house... March 3rd is the First Sunday in Lent....a time when many people often give up something they enjoy....Chocolate, wine, but really rather than giving up something we should try to find time to do more for Jesus. Spending more time with friends and family, visiting those who are unwell or trying to listen to those who need additional support. I suggested something you might do during Lent....for each day put an item you have not used or clothes you have not worn for a long time into a bin liner and at the end of a Lent take the bag to a Charity shop. Do you remember how Jesus spent 40 days in the Wilderness whilst the devil tried to persuade him to follow him but Jesus would not give in to the devil...He remained true to His Father God. He did not give into temptation. How easy is it to give in to temptation? We are often tempted and it is hard to resist, especially if by giving in we reap material benefits...we can avoid succumbing to temptation by putting our trust and faith in the Lord. He is there to guide and support us, even more so when we are tempted. Isn’t the countryside beginning to look beautiful? Almond tress are bursting into blossom, wild flowers are blooming, a profusion of colour gradually covering the dry earth. God’s creation is truly wonderful. The days are gradually lengthening, the weather is warming up, although the wind can be chilly, blowing right through you....a lazy wind so some folks say. and sunsets and sunrises well, they are nearly always spectacular with the sky tinted all shades of pink. Beautiful. When we say our prayers we should remember those who are less fortunate than ourselves who live in war torn countries where fighting, bombing and violence are an every day occurrence. We should be thankful for all we have been given and ask God to comfort and heal those on our prayer needs list and those known only to each of us. God bless you and keep you safe

MOZAMBIQUE

This is the Iris Primary School

05/02

48 hours of "relative" NORMAL - how good does that feel!! ALL TPC done for the weekend, found the shorts needed, met a Moz. author and had books signed .... ready for the Sabbath!

13/02

Christmas!! Packages and cards arrived in Nelspruit... could pretend the rain outside is snow (at a

stretch!!) - chilling and feeling loved. Perfect timing huh?? And one other surprise!

The major event at Zimpeto recently was the return to school after the summer holidays. The first

picture shows the children who were setting off for their first day at school. Normally the pictures we

see show the baby house and those under Tracey’s direct care but I don’t think there are many of us

who appreciated the vast undertaking that the Primary School alone is. And there is a secondary

school too…!

This year’s Women’s World Day of Prayer Service will be held in La Siesta Church on Friday

March 1st. at 2.30pm.

All are invited to attend, it is not for ladies only, gentlemen are welcome.

This year the theme of the service has been prepared by the Christian Women of Slovenia

The exact same Order of Service will be used throughout the world. The following tells us

more of the organisation.

The Women's World Day of Prayer started in the

USA in 1884.

When Mary Ellen James called for a day of prayer

in 1887, she was not planning a great worldwide

movement, destined to become the largest

ecumenical movement in the world organised and

led by women. She was simply reacting, as a

Christian, to the society in which she lived. The

wife of a Presbyterian minister in New York and

the mother of seven children, Mary Ellen was

aware of the problems faced by many women

around her, particularly new immigrants to

America - the awful slums with their poverty,

unemployment, poor housing, lack of health or

educational facilities. Something had to be done

Two years later, two Baptists called together a Day

of Prayer for the World Mission. The Day of Prayer

initiated by these two women expanded to

neighboring countries, then on to and other

continents.

Since 1927 the day is known as Women’s World

Day of Prayer.

Through the World Day of Prayer, women are

encouraged to become aware of the other

countries and cultures and no longer live in

isolation. They are also encouraged take up the

burdens of other people, to sympathize with the

problems of other countries and cultures and pray

with and for them. They are further encouraged to

become aware of their talents and use them in the

service of society. The World Day of Prayer aims

to demonstrate that prayer and action are

inseparable and that both have immeasurable

influence in the world.

Every year, worship service focuses on a different

country and a specific theme chosen by the

women of the featured country which this year is

Slovenia. The theme is “Come- everything is

ready” based on the parable which Jesus told

about the great feast as recounted in Luke 14: 15-

USED POSTAGE STAMPS

Helping to Fight Blood Cancer

I am collecting used postage stamps to help raise funds for BLOODWISE – formerly Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. Please will you save your used postage stamps – just tear the stamps off the corner of the envelope, if possible leaving a small margin of paper round the stamps – and put them in the bag pinned to the notice board at the back of the church. Many thanks to those who have already started donating your stamps.

WEDDING

Last month Pastor Keith officiated at the wedding of

Iesha and Stephen.

Both are from Prince Edward Island in Canada and

had specially chosen our church for their wedding.

The bride told us that she manages a canning

factory but previously worked as a shipyard welder

which job she sadly had to give up on account of

threatened eye damage.

May God bless them both in their lives together.

MAY FAYRE

This year our Church returns to run it’s May Fayre independently. In the last few years

we have been involved in joint effort with the Ladies Friendship Group in running a

Christmas event but we have now decided to revert to the old formula of two Fayres,

one each, in May and December.

Our Fayre will be held on Saturday May 18th so start now to plan and look out any

donation you may have.

LADIES FRIENDSHIP GROUP

Once again a very good meeting with a very informative talk from a man from the Red Cross telling us about the safety aids available to people in the area.

March meeting is a talk by Christine Watkins on her time on Ascension Island,

Mary is planning the trip for us in June.

For further information contact Debbie Capewell, [email protected] or 679501543.

IMMEDIATE AND URGENT NECESSITIES

In a matter of weeks Pastor Keith retires and it seems that the Presbytery whose job it is

to find a replacement have absolutely no leads for us. Due to matters outwith our control,

we have a severe problem of finance, not that we are short of money but rather accessing

it. I am being rather vague on this matter but a full explanation will appear in our next

edition once discussed by the Elders.

We are still without a permanent organist and after December 31st this year we will be

without a Treasurer. The tenure of this office has been extended for “one more year”

annually since 2013 but that option is no longer on the table.

Happily the vacant Choirmaster’s position has been filled.

We do, however, need some new Elders.

Consider carefully if you think you could cover any of the requirements, we really do need

YOU as Lord Kitchener said.

OUR CHURCH

Newsletter 292

March 2019

La Siesta Evangelical Church is an ecumenical English speaking congregation drawn from

Baptists, Methodists, United Reform, Church of Scotland, Presbyterian Church in Ireland

and several other denominations. We belong to the Iglesia Evangélica Española or Spanish

Evangelical Church, a Presbyterian Church in which we are part of the Presbytery of

Levante.

Our Membership Secretary is Helen Tudor and you should contact her or any other Elder at

any service if you are interested in joining our Church. Helen´s telephone number appears

in the Elders section on this page.

If you are a visitor we cordially invite you to sign the visitors' book at the front door. We do

have many visitors especially in the holiday months and it is very easy for "new faces" to be

missed. You will notice that the Elders and members of the Fellowship Committee are

identified by badges and we urge you to attend the refreshments after the service and to

introduce yourselves. We are really interested in meeting visitors to our services.
