Happy Older American’s Month! Can you believe that it is May already? Older American’s Month was created in 1963 and the month of May is used to celebrate it. Led by the Admin-istration for Community Living, this annual observation offers the opportunity to learn about, support, and celebrate our nation’s older citizens. This year’s theme is “Connect, Create, Contribute.” “Connect” with friends, family, and services that support participation. “Create” by engaging in activities that promote learning, health, and personal enrichment. “Contribute” time, talent, and life experience to benefit others. Communities that encourage the contribu-tions of older adults are stronger! By engaging and supporting all community members, we recognize that older adults play a key role in the vitality of our neighborhoods, networks, and lives. Everyone benefits when everyone can participate. I encourage you to connect, create, and contribute for a stronger and more diverse com-munities now and throughout the year. Hope to see you at the Center soon.

MAY IS OLDER AMERICANS MONTH

Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads our nation’s observance of Older

Americans Month. We are pleased to announce the 2019 theme, Connect, Create, Contribute, which encourages older adults

and their communities to:

Connect with friends, family, and services

that support participation.

Create by engaging in activities that promote learning, health, and personal

enrichment.

Contribute time, talent, and life experience

to benefit others.

Communities that encourage the contribu-tions of older adults are stronger! By

engaging and supporting all community mem-bers, we recognize that older adults play a

key role in the vitality of our neighborhoods,

networks, and lives.

Everyone benefits when everyone can partici-pate. We encourage you to connect, create,

and contribute for stronger and more diverse

communities now and throughout the year.

SHIIP or the Senior Health Insurance

Information Program is a consumer in-

formation division of the North Carolina

Department of Insurance that provides

free, unbiased counseling about Medicare

not just to seniors, but also to people on

Medicare due to disability. They assist

with questions about your health insurance

options, Medicare, Medicare Part D, Medi-

care supplements, Medicare Advantage

and long term care insurance. SHIIP also

helps people recognize and prevent Medi-

care billing errors and possible fraud and

abuse through the NC Senior Medicare

Patrol program.

For free, unbiased counseling and to

answer questions you may have about

Medicare or the LIS Program, call Ruth-

erford County Senior Center at 287-

6409 and schedule an appointment with

our trained SHIIP counselor – or contact

SHIIP direct at 1-855-408-1212 or

Prescription Drug Assistance for Low-Income

Medicare Beneficiaries

The Low-Income Subsidy (LIS) program, also known as Extra

Help, assists qualified Medicare beneficiaries with out-of-pocket

expenses associated with Medicare Part D/prescription drugs.

To qualify for Extra Help, a Medicare beneficiary must meet cer-

tain income, resource and asset level requirements. The income

and asset limits for Extra Help are: $1,581/per month with as-

sets up to $14,390 if you are single; and $2,134/per month with

assets up to $28,720 if you are a married couple living together.

This includes your monthly earnings, Social Security and Veter-

ans' benefits, disability payments, cash contributions, retirements

and pensions. Resources and assets include the value of items

you own, cash, stocks, bonds, retirement accounts, the value of a

second car, boats and any real property that is not the primary

residence and does not produce income. Depending on your in-

come and asset levels and the Part D plan you choose, you may

have either a reduced premium or no premium; your deductible

may be covered or lowered; and your prescription copayments

will be very small – from $3.40 for a generic drug and up to $8.50

for a brand-name drug. But perhaps the two biggest benefits to

any amount of Extra Help/LIS assistance will be the elimination of

a Part D coverage gap, also known as the “donut hole,” and the

opportunity to change Prescription Drug Plans. Call Rutherford
